四、阅读理解
It was cold and windy. I was heading to the gym one evening in late autumn.
As I walked through a parking lot, I saw a homeless man who was about to sleep against the wall around a rubbish bin.
I was about half a block past him when I turned and walked back. I knew it was not a good idea to bother (打扰) this man. Many people in the streets have mental (精神的) illness. As a woman, it was unwise for me to ask a strange man if he needed help. And it was getting darker and colder, I was shivering as I stood before the man. “Sir,” I began, “I live over there. A police officer in our community once said they would try to help the homeless find housing if we called him.” I then asked him if it was okay to call the police for him. Unexpectedly, he agreed.
After making the call, I offered to wait with him. I was afraid the police would pass by and miss him. I did not want him to be unseen. Again, he calmly agreed.
When the officers arrived, they told me that he would have shelter (收容所) and they even thanked me.
Sometimes I wonder why I stopped that night. But that man made me realize that even though others might be better able to help, sometimes you have to step in because you’re the one present at that time.
