阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Scarborough has been on my holiday wish list for a long time, so, when I finally had a chance to get away from busy work, I couldn’t wait to book a family staycation in Britain’s original seaside, with its rich history and scenic views.
Our first calling point was the delightful Peasholm Park. Situated in Scarborough’s North Bay, it was named the UK’s sixth Best Park. A relaxing afternoon walk was the perfect start to our trip. It features a lovely boating lake, an amazing waterfall and even a wishing well. The friendly squirrels that jump and run in the park, who will eat nuts from your hand, took me by surprise.
The next morning we began our trip up to Scarborough Castle. It’s quite a walk, especially when you meet wind and rain, but it’s totally worth the journey. I enjoyed exploring the remains of the castle, which includes an Iron Age settlement, Roman signal station, and 18th-century battery. With information boards spread around the site as well as audio guides, I could really throw myself into 3,000 years of history. Not only that, but from the battlement viewing platforms, you can be lost in impressive coastline views overlooking the North and South Bays.
On our final day in Scarborough, the sun was shining and we wandered along the sandy beach at North Bay, admiring our quiet surroundings. After a long walk, where better to rest our tired legs than resting beside Freddie Gilroy? The huge statue, created by Ray Lonsdale, pictures this former miner (矿工), who fought for the freedom of Belsen, sitting on a bench in his old age.
My first visit to Scarborough was everything that I had hoped and more, reminding me that we have some beautiful holiday destinations right on our doorstep without needing to head abroad. I’ll surely return to Scarborough in the future, once I’ve seen the other delights Britain has to offer.

I hesitated when my friend suggested that we join the school’s new Tai Chi club. I used to think that tai chi was for the elderly. However, the first class changed my previous understanding of tai chi. A year later, I can say that tai chi has had a huge impact on me.
The first few tai chi classes were fun and easy, and the moves with descriptive names really caught my imagination, like “white crane spreading its wings” and “golden rooster standing on one leg.” When I asked my coach where these interesting names came from, he told me about the history of tai chi. Zhang Sanfeng, a 13th-century Taoist, was said to have invented tai chi after drawing inspiration from a fight between a snake and a bird. However, nowadays people tend to believe that Chen Wangting, a 17th-century master of Chinese martial arts, developed tai chi based on martial arts skills.
After the first few basic tai chi lessons, I found myself bored and aching from doing the same slow moves over and over again. Fortunately, my coach taught me how to relax my muscles and focus on peace of mind during ever, day practice. With these requirements of tai chi in mind, I found to my satisfaction that my balance and flexibility slowly improved, that I was able to do more difficult moves, and that my love for tai chi returned stronger than ever.
Meanwhile, I started to explore the ancient Chinese culture behind tai chi. I discovered that tai chi is deeply rooted in the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang, which are believed to form the the unity of opposite. Neither can exist independent of the other. The practice of tai chi aims to keep the balance of yin and yang in the body through opposite movements: forwards and backwards, up and down, left and right, breathing in and breathing out. Ultimately, tai chi brings about a state of physical balance and mental peace.
The experience of a year of tai chi has affected my everyday life positively. I sleep more soundly at night, and feel more energetic during the day. I feel happier and more confident. Tai chi has taught me to relax my mind, enabling me to stay calm in stressful situations. I am sure I will continue to practise tai chi and enjoy the benefits it has brought me.
24. Why did the author join the Tai Chi Club?
A. Because of his friend’s advice. B. Because of his interest in it.
C. Because of the school’s request. D. Because of his parents’ suggestion.
25. Which of the following words can describe the moves of tai chi?
A. Quick and beautiful. B. Quick and free.
C. Slow and beautiful. D. Slow and boring.
26. What is the Chinese culture behind tai chi?
A. Tai chi is influenced by Laozi’s philosophy of water.
B. Tai chi can have a positive effect in people’s lives.
C. You can find the origin of tai chi in the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang.
D. Tai chi can make people feel energetic and confident.
27. What does the underlined word mean?
A. Finally B. Sometimes C. Firstly D. Constantly

Zhang Sanfeng, a 13th-century Taoist, was said to have invented tai chi after drawing inspiration from a fight between a snake and a bird.(最初的几节太极课既有趣又简单,那些动作的名字也很吸引我,比如“白鹤展翅”和“金鸡独立”。

Southern California’s firefighters worked tirelessly on Saturday to put out a wildfire that has destroyed more than 100 buildings as strong winds calmed down and the weather was expected to stay good for the weekend. Evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings for people in several areas of Ventura County, where the mountain fire held at around 83 square kilometers and 21% of it was under control.
Firefighters were aided by lighter winds, mild temperatures and low humidity (湿度), which let fuels dry out and burn off quickly, according to the National Weather Service. “We had a very successful day on the fire that broke out 3 days ago with the favorable (有利的) weather,” Ventura County Fire Department Battalion Chief Nick Cleary said on Saturday.
“The fire got worse with the arrival of dry, warm and strong northeast Santa Ana winds, forcing thousands of people to evacuate and putting 3,500 buildings in danger around the community of Camarillo. More than100 buildings were destroyed and another 25 damaged,” fire officials said on Saturday after working teams fanned out to check the damage. It was reported that the damage would be at $2.4 million.
Smoky air hung over the area and was expected to stay there for several days. Weather conditions would remain favorable on Sunday and Monday with low temperatures and an onshore light wind. Another round of northeast winds was expected on Tuesday, but humidity was expected to rise and winds were not expected to get as high as those that fanned the fire.
The area northwest of Los Angeles has seen some of California’s most destructive fires over the years. The mountain fire burgeoned from less than 1.2 square kilometers to more than 41 square kilometers in little more than five hours on Wednesday, with winds topping 98 kph. The governor of California has announced a state of emergency in Ventura County.
28. What can we know about the fire in Ventura County?
A. It wasn’t as strong as expected. B. It didn’t do much damage.
C. It has been partly controlled. D. It has been completely put out.

In 1968 Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson set an intelligence test for a class of primary school children at "Oak School" (an invented name) in San Francisco. The teachers were told that the intelligence test bad two purposes. Firstly, it would measure the IQ of the children and secondly it would predict 20% of students who, no matter what their performance to date was like, would be likely to make the most progress during the next school year. The teachers were then told who the predicted top improvers would be.
At the end of the school year, eight months later, the intelligence test was carried out again and, perhaps not surprisingly, the results showed that the 20% of children who had been predicted to improve the most, did in fact do so. They showed, on average, an increase of 12 IQ points on the test, compared with an increase of only 8 points for the other children.
But the fact is that no results of any test were used to predict who would be the top performers. Instead, the lucky children who the teachers were told would be the top improvers were given this label as a matter of chance. This study shows that the label that you are given, and your interaction(互动) with others who notice that label, can have a big influence on the results that you achieve. This phenomenon(现象)has been called the Rosenthal effect. It is also known as the Pygmalion effect, related most famously to the George Bernard Show play Pygmalion , which shows the effect that two men have in changing an untidy flower girl into a well-spoken lady.
For ethical (道德的)reasons the researchers at "Oak School!" only concentrated on trying to produce positive results in the children's performance. However, it is worth asking yourself what the effects on 20% of students considered least likely to improve in the following school year might have been. A frightening thought.
32. What did the study find about the predicted top performers at the end of the school year?
A. They showed more interest in tests. B. They really made the most progress.
C. They became less confident than before. D. They were as intelligent as the other children.
33. How were the top performers chosen?
A. According to the teachers' judgement. B. Based on the test results.
C. By chance. D. Openly.
34. What can we infer about the 20% of students mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. They might be willing to accept positive results.
B. They would likely have frightening thoughts.
C. They would likely make the least progress.
D. They might work much harder than before.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The Rosenthal effect B. A play by Bernard Shaw.
C. A school in San Francisco. D. The labels given to children.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. C 35. A

【33题详解】
细节理解题。由第三段中的the top improvers were given this label as a matter of chance可知,这些研究者随机选择了那些被说成是进步最大的学生。故选C。
【34题详解】

【35题详解】
主旨大意题。本文第一、二段介绍了实验的过程,第三、四段解释了实验的真相和效果,最后一段是作者对这一实验的反思。全文围绕罗森塔尔效应这一主旨展开。故选A。

Firstly D. Constantly

A. It wasn’t as strong as expected. B. It didn’t do much damage.
C. It has been partly controlled. D. It has been completely put out.
29. When did the mountain fire start?
A. On Sunday. B. On Saturday. C. On Wednesday. D. On Monday.
30. What does the underlined word “burgeoned” in the last paragraph mean?

As she crossed the street, Eshelman noticed a man, who was asking for money on the corner. His messy hair and clothing made it seem like he’d been living outside for a while. She watched as he asked a passerby for change, but she even didn’t look at him.
