In my teen years, my dad taught me things I’d need to know to survive in the real world. This was our relationship, I asked him questions and he told me the ____15____.
When I moved out on my own, I called him at least once a week, usually when something broke in my flat and I needed to know how to ____16____ it.
But then, day after day, I needed him less. I got married, and my husband had lots of ____17____ about everything.
I didn’t know when it happened, but when I ____18____ back, our conversations went like that. “Hi, Dad, ” I said.
And he said “Hi, sweet, here’s Mom.”
I loved my dad, of course, but sometimes I was not sure if he had already shared everything I needed to know. Maybe I’d heard all his stories. Maybe, after knowing him for 40 years, there was nothing left to say.
Then, this past summer, my husband, our four kids, and I moved in with my parents for three weeks ____19____ our house was being repaired. They own a lake house, and Dad asked me to help him rebuild the bulkhead (隔板) at their dock.
It was ____20____work. We got wet and sandy. As we put the new bulkhead together piece by piece, my dad knew exactly ____21____ went where. I looked at him and said, “How do you know how to build the bulkhead?”
”I spent a summer in college building them on the Jersey Shore.“
“You did?” I thought I knew everything about my dad—all his part-time jobs. I knew about the apple orchard where he worked, the restaurant where he learned how to make the best pancake, but I ____22____ knew this.
”Yep.Now come up here and let me teach you how to use this circular saw.“
As he explained the reason of not setting the blade (刀片) too deep, I realized that maybe it was not that there was nothing left to ____23____. Maybe it was just that I’d spent my life asking him the wrong questions.
A few weeks later, after my family and I moved back into our own house, I called my parents. Dad answered. “Hi, sweet,” he said, “here’s Mom.”
“Wait, Dad,” I said. “How are you?” We ended up talking about the consulting things he was working on, and a new battery he’d bought for his boat. Nothing life-changing, nothing earth-shattering. To ____24____ else, it would sound like a normal conversation between a dad and his daughter. But to me, it was a new beginning. I spent the first part of my life needing to talk to my dad. Now I talk to him because I want to.

The Seasons
Many countries have four seasons each year. What causes these seasons? We get our warmth from the sun. The Earth takes one year to go around the sun. It is always tilted to one side. When the North Pole is tilted towards the sun the northern part of the world has summer and it is winter in the south. The in-between times are spring and autumn.
In some parts of the world, the weather is always hot, and winter never comes. These are the countries around the equator. Do you know anything about equator? It is a line drawn around the middle of a globe of the Earth. It is halfway between the two poles.
What Affects Temperature?
Temperatures get colder the higher you go. If you climbed a mountain, you would be much colder than if you were at sea level. For every 1,000 metres we climb, the temperature drops about 6° Celsius.
Even mountains in very hot parts of the world may have snow or ice on them all year round. Tanzania is a country in Africa that lies on the equator. Mt Kilimanjaro is its highest mountain at 5,900 metres high and it has some ice on the top right through the year—though not as much as it used to have.
▲ Temperatures
Does the time of day affect the temperature? Yes. In the middle of the day, it is usually warmer because the sun is more directly overhead. In the morning and again in the evening, it is often cooler than in the middle of the day. It is because the sun is lower in the sky and the slanting rays have to go through more atmosphere. Atmosphere is important to living things on the earth. Without the atmosphere, it would be burning hot every day and freezing cold every night.
During the day, the atmosphere is like a filter. It keeps the hottest rays of the sun from reaching the Earth. At night, the atmosphere is like a blanket. It traps the heat radiated from the Earth, preventing it from escaping into space too quickly.

D. If the temperature at sea level is 20℃, it is 15℃ in a place which is 3000 meters above.

Babu lived in India and worked as a potter (陶工). He spent his days using wet clay to shape jars and big pots. Babu loved making beautiful pottery, but he was not a rich man.
Babu’s son was getting married soon and his whole family was excited. In India, the new husband and wife sometimes rode through town on an elephant on their wedding (结婚) day.

The happy pair climbed on the elephant and rode through the center of town waving to their friends. Suddenly, the elephant fell to the ground, and the husband and wife fell to the ground, too.
The elephant saw his chance to get away from Puma. He rose to his feet and ran down a nearby street. Babu went to Puma’s home and told him what had happened.
“I will give you until Wednesday to return the runaway elephant or bring the full price all at once.” Puma said, “If you cannot do that, I will put you in jail (监狱).”
Babu went back home, he thought and thought and thought, an idea suddendly came into his mind. He worked day and night for two days to make many pots, jars, and bowls. He also painted old designs that he remembered seeing many years ago on the pottery. The old designs made the new pottery look old.

Then Babu came into the shop. “What happened here? How did my jars get broken? And the door is broken, too.”
“I’m so sorry. I broke your old and expensive pottery.” Puma said, “I’ll pay you for the jars.”
Babu pointed at the mess. “I want my broken pots back. They were SPECIAL. If I don’t get my pots back, I’ll call the police and put you in jail.”

There are so many different kinds of chocolate! What is your favourite? Do you want to know more about chocolate?
If chocolate grew on trees
Where do you get your chocolate? Can you believe that chocolate grew on trees. Yes, it does! Chocolate comes from the seeds of the cocoa tree. This tree grows in warm areas around the world, like Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa and Asia.
The cocoa tree can grow up to forty feet high with large pods. Inside the pods are big seeds. These seeds are used to make the chocolate that we drink and eat. But they do not taste like chocolate at first. There is a special way to give them that taste.
Making chocolate
Chocolate is made very carefully. First, people put the seeds into big containers (容器). The seeds ferment for a while. “Ferment” means the seeds break down and change a little. This gives the seeds a new flavor. They start to have a chocolate taste.
Second, when the seeds are ready, they are dried in the sun. After the seeds are dried, they are roasted (烘烤). Then, the shells are removed. Finally, they are turned into cocoa powder and chocolate.
The chocolate we eat today has sugar in it. But for thousands of years, people ate chocolate that was not sweet at all.
________
People have been drinking cocoa for at least 2, 000 years. Cocoa was very special to the people of Central America. They made cocoa to drink. They drink it like coffee. They didn’t put milk or sugar in it.
When the Spanish arrived in Central America, the Aztec people gave them cocoa. It was a special treat. The Spanish took the cocoa back home. Kings and queens across Europe loved the bitter cocoa drink. It was very expensive. Only part of rich people can buy it. Later chocolate makers added sugar to make it sweet. Now people all over the world eat chocolate whenever they want. It is not hard to see why kings and queens loved it so much.
Now they are abundant in a store, white chocolates and dark chocolates, milk chocolates and bittersweet chocolates, chocolate sauce and chocolate bars. You can get yours easily!

He soon understood that he was alone there. He tried to make his life safe and comfortable. He built a strong house. He caught small animals and birds for food. He learnt how to make bread and cheese. But he was always alone and he never stopped thinking about how to leave the island.
Many years later, he found that cannibals (食人者) often visited his island. They brought their prisoners (囚犯) there, killed them and then ate them. Robinson saved one of their prisoners, a young man. He called him Friday and he taught him to speak English. Friday helped Robinson with his work and they became good friends. Finally Robinson started to enjoy his life on the island. Then one day the captain of an English ship arrived and Robinson’s dream of returning to England finally happened.
Many people think that Defoe thought of the character of Robinson Crusoe when he read about a Scottish sailor called Alexander Selkirk (1676-1721). Selkirk spent more than four years alone on an island near the coast of Chile.Robinson spent 28 years on his island.

I didn’t know when it happened, but when I ____18____ back, our conversations went like that. “Hi, Dad, ” I said.

The Seasons
Many countries have four seasons each year. What causes these seasons? We get our warmth from the sun. The Earth takes one year to go around the sun. It is always tilted to one side. When the North Pole is tilted towards the sun, the northern part of the world has summer and it is winter in the south.

C. When the South Pole is tilted towards the sun, the northern part has winter.
D. If the temperature at sea level is 20℃, it is 15℃ in a place which is 3000 meters above.

Babu went back home, he thought and thought and thought, an idea suddendly came into his mind. He worked day and night for two days to make many pots, jars, and bowls. He also painted old designs that he remembered seeing many years ago on the pottery. The old designs made the new pottery look old.

“I’m so sorry. I broke your old and expensive pottery.” Puma said, “I’ll pay you for the jars.”

【详解】根据中英文对照可知,空处缺“被……覆盖”的英文。be covered with意为“被……覆盖”,固定搭配。主语The whole road与核心动词cover之间为被动关系,根据“is”可知,需一般现在时的被动语态,be动词用is。故填is covered with。

【答案】例文
Dear Simon,
Thank you for your email. I’m glad to hear about your interest in birdwatching, especially golden eagles.
Golden eagles are magnificent birds with broad wings and brown feathers. They are known for their sharp eyesight and hunting skills. Unfortunately, they are facing several problems, such as reduced living space and a lack of food. Human activities like deforestation and hunting have also threatened their survival. To help protect them, we should work towards creating more forests and enforcing strict regulations against hunting. Educating people about the importance of these birds can also make a difference.
I hope this information helps. Feel free to ask if you have more questions.
Best regards,
Zhang Hua
