Home delivery meal kits have been one of the bits of the pandemic: they have enabled diners to carry on getting a taste of restaurant-quality food, while helping restaurants to stay in business, and even make you an excellent chef. Here are four of the best offering delivery in our region:
Berenjak (berenjakbazaar.com)
“The kabab kits from this London-based Iranian restaurant — which range in price from £25 to £45 — are a ‘class act’,” says Jay Rayner in The Observer. “My kit even included a pair of plastic gloves for me to wear while dealing with the raw meat. This is the best kind of meal kit — the cooking is fun, and the finished product is utterly delicious.”
Gujarati Rasoi (gujaratirasoi.co.uk)
“I love this vegetarian restaurant,” says Marina O’Loughlin in The Sunday Times. “And its meal boxes are ‘electrifyingly good’ too. Family boxes for four cost £65, and I especially love the starter (£15.50). The dishes were complicated, yet quite easy to cook.”
Lyle’s (lylesprovisions.com)
“This Michelin-starred London restaurant delivers its ‘exquisitely delicious’ menu boxes each Friday” says Xanthe Clay in The Daily Telegraph. “At £140 for two, they aren’t cheap, and with multiple courses, they do take a bit of work and concentration to cook.”
Santo Remedio (santoremedio.co.uk)
“Order a Remedy kit from Santo Remedio and what you will get is an incredibly generous, sharing-style Mexican feast for two,” says Anna Lawson on BBC’s “Good Food”. “The kits come with a choice of slow-cooked meat, accompanied by all the ingredients to make your own pancake. Preparation is simple, thanks to a colour-coded instruction.”
16. What can be found in all the introductions to home delivery meal kits?
A. Small gifts. B. Cooking instructions.
C. Nice discounts. D. Personal recommendations.
17. People who favor Mexican food may go to ___________.
A. Berenjak B. Gujarati Rasoi C. Lyle’s D. Santo Remedio

C. Ordinary housewives. D. Hotel managers.

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain — a fairly gentle 3,900-foot peak. I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the summit. But I loved challenging myself. Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy that I finally found a hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen. She and I drove to tackle 11,240-foot Mount Hood. It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less risk of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 am. At around 9 am, we reached an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall and sloped at a 75-degree angle. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step.
I gained a sense of the ice when I stuck my ax and crampons (鞋底钉) into it, and it felt good. Confident I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a crack, and as the snowpack became thinner, a whole piece of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
In an instant, I fell backward, bouncing off the rock face and rolling down the mountain as if I were a character in a video game. I remember thinking: This is it. You’re done. I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything. That stopped my rolling down the mountain, but I was still sliding. After a few seconds, I came to a stop on a shallow slope.
I asked myself: Where are you? Mount Hood. What’s the date? December 30. Good. My brain was functioning. Then I checked my body to see where I was hurt. For the most part, I was fine, except that I was suffering from a sharp pain in my left leg. Later I’d learn that I’d broken my femur (大腿骨) and that the bone was slicing into my skin and muscle.
At the bottom of Mount Hood, I was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital. The doctors told me it would be a year before I could climb again, but I was back on the trails within six months.
19. Why did the author and her friend set out at 3 am?
A. It was the best time to enjoy scenery. B. It was more challenging to climb at night.
C. They hoped to avoid some possible dangers. D. They wanted to finish the climb before sunset.
20. Why is “a character in a video game” mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To show her strong character. B. To make her idea more convincing.
C. To help readers imagine the scene. D. To add to the humor of the description.
21. How did the author make sure she could still think clearly?
A. By recalling what had happened. B. By checking whether she was injured.
C. By calling an ambulance for rescue. D. By asking herself some factual questions.
22. What can we learn about the author?
A. She is too brave to pay attention to any danger.
B. Adversities can’t stop her from challenging herself.
C. The love for nature sets her apart from her friend.
D. She has a strong desire for professional knowledge.

Searching for airfares often seems like a game that passengers are bound to (一定,注定) lose.
Prices change from day to day even minute to minute. Looking through multiple websites for the best deal can be a big challenge. Even when you do book, there’s no guarantee that you are going to get the best price.
“You just don’t know when to pull the trigger. It’s not like buying anything else I can think of,” said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com.
Harriet Levy paid $179 for a recent round-trip flight on American Airlines between New York and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sitting just one row behind her, Shirley Harrison paid $215. A few rows back, Ellis and Dianne Traub paid $317 each. There were at least 12 fares on the flight, ranging from $169 to $360.
There’s no reason for it, Harrison said. Fares can vary significantly in just a few hours. One Delta flight from New York to Los Angeles jumped from $755 to $1,143 from a Friday to Saturday in late April, then fell to $718 on Sunday.
There’s no way to guarantee the best fare. But before booking, travelers should pay attention to this additional advice:
● Book on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That’s when airlines most often offer sales.
● Buy in advance, but not too early. The best time is four to six weeks before traveling. In general, prices for any given flight are highest eight to ten weeks and two to three weeks in advance.
● The so-called discount airlines — JetBlue, Air-Tran, Southwest and Frontier — adjust their fares less frequently than other airlines, so you can feel more confident that the price will stay the same. But their prices aren’t always the lowest. Researching multiple airlines’ fares is the only way to get a good deal.
23. What can we infer from the first sentence of the text?
A. Passengers are unable to search for airfares.
B. Airlines often play games with passengers.
C. Airfares are set in different situations.
D. It’s difficult for passengers to get the best price.
24. The underlined phrase “pull the trigger” in Paragraph 3 probably means________.
A. start searching
B. get the best price
C. book a ticket
D. get on board the plane
25. By using a lot of figures, the author intends to ________.
A. show there is standard price for every single airline
B. prove airfares can vary widely
C. guarantee passengers a low price
D. show the secrets behind airfares
26. Passengers are advised to book flights ________.
A. in the middle of the week
B. on special websites
C. several months before traveling
D. with airlines which are famous for offering discount prices
D
American users of the popular video sharing service TikTok are preparing for a possible ban (禁令) of the app by the US government. US lawmakers have warned the Chinese-owned TikTok could be misusing users’ information. A TikTok spokesperson said in a statement, “TikTok US user data is stored in the US, with strict controls on employee access. TikTok’s biggest investors come from the US. We are committed to protecting our users’ privacy and safety as we continue working to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform.”
The platform lets users create and share very short videos and provides helpful tools to do so. Videos often include popular songs from well-known artists and TikTok has helped launch the careers of new Internet and music stars.
News of the possible ban spread quickly among TikTok users.
One of those users is Ty Gibson of Greensboro, North Carolina. Gibson said at first, he dismissed the reports suggesting the app might be banned. But then, a technical problem led him to believe a ban might be beginning. The problem, which was later fixed, made a video counting tool disappear. “I thought it was the end,” Gibson told Reuters news agency. “I didn’t even have time to think things through.” Gibson said he recorded a personal goodbye video for his 4.6 million fans, asking them to follow him on YouTube and Facebook’s Instagram.
Other TikTok fans are staying with the service for now. TikTokBan has received more than 212 million views on the app, while SaveTikTok got over 315 million. Fans are concerned that if the app is actually shut down, it will challenge the values that Americans hold dear, such as freedom of speech.
Competing video sharing services like Triller and Byte have watched downloads of their apps rise. Some rivals (对手) are now directly targeting TikTok users. Triller, which became known for its heavy use of hip-hop music, is seeking to sign up top TikTok stars to join, said Ryan Kavanaugh, founder of Triller. Dylan Tate is a TikTok user from Greenville, South Carolina with 1.2 million followers. He has been urging other TikTok users to move to the Byte app in his recent videos. Tate says one big reason to move is that Byte gives 100 percent of ad earnings to video creators.
27. What can we know about TikTok in Paragraph 1?
A. Its employees have easy access to user data.
B. It can protect their users from losing their jobs.
C. It is a platform where users protect their privacy.
D. It may be banned for possibly misusing users’ information.
28. How did Ty Gibson react to the ban?
A. He was shocked and angry at first. B. He didn’t take the ban seriously at first.
C. He chose to stick to TikTok despite the ban. D. He attracted more fans with his goodbye video.
29. What happened to the competing video sharing service?
A. They made efforts to support TikTok.
B. They tried to win over top TikTok stars.
C. They forced TikTok users to download their apps.
D They advertised their videos to make more money.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The ban makes people familiar with TikTok in the USA.
B. TikTok and its rivals are competing for customers.
C. TikTok becomes increasingly stronger despite the ban.
D. US TikTok users prepare for life without the app.

【答案】A

“This Michelin-starred London restaurant delivers its ‘exquisitely delicious’ menu boxes each Friday,” says Xanthe Clay in The Daily Telegraph.

C
Searching for airfares often seems like a game that passengers are bound to (一定,注定) lose.
Prices change from day to day, even minute to minute.
C book a ticket
D. get on board the plane
25. By using a lot of figures, the author intends to ________.
A. show there is standard price for every single airline
B. prove airfares can vary widely
C. guarantee passengers a low price
D. show the secrets behind airfares
26. Passengers are advised to book flights ________.
A. in the middle of the week
B. on special websites
C. several months before traveling
D. with airlines which are famous for offering discount prices

One Delta flight from New York to Los Angeles jumped from $755 to $1,143 from a Friday to Saturday in late April, then fell to $718 on Sunday.(4 月下旬,达美航空从纽约飞往洛杉矶的一个航班,从周五到周六票价从 755 美元涨到 1143 美元,然后在周日又降至 718 美元。)”可知,作者通过列举不同乘客在同一航班上支付不同价格以及同一航班不同时间价格大幅波动的例子,用大量数据表明机票价格可能会有很大的差异。故选B项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“Book on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That’s when airlines most often offer sales.(在周二、周三和周四预订。那是航空公司最常提供促销活动的时候。)”可知,周二、周三和周四处于一周的中间时段,所以建议乘客在一周中间时段预订航班。故选A项。

D. They advertised their videos to make more money.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The ban makes people familiar with TikTok in the USA.
B. TikTok and its rivals are competing for customers.
C. TikTok becomes increasingly stronger despite the ban.
D. US TikTok users prepare for life without the app.
【答案】27. D 28. B 29. B 30. D

Are you sitting more than ever? ___31___ You’re probably sitting while reading this. Sometimes you sit when you are driving or attending a meeting. Other times you sit when you engage yourself in watching a movie or playing computer games. That’s undoubtedly a lot of sitting. The fact is, the amount of time spent sitting has increased over time. ___32___
We know sitting too much is bad, and most of us naturally feel a little guilty after a long-time TV watching. ___33___ A study on nearly 8,000 adults suggests that there’s a direct relationship between the time spent sitting and our risk of early death of any cause. As the total sitting time increases, so does the risk of early death.
“Sit less, move more” is what the Heart Association encourages us to do. ___34___ It is like telling someone to just ”exercise“ without telling them how. Exercise guidelines are always more practical. For example, the Center for Disease Control recommends adults do exercise for two hours and 30 minutes every week, plus muscle strengthening activities two or more days a week. We need similar guidelines for sitting.
___35___ “It would probably be like, for every 30 continuous minutes of sitting, stand up and move or walk for five minutes at a quick pace,” Diaz, the lead researcher said, adding that the study has put us a step closer to the satisfying guidelines. But more researches are needed to confirm their approach.
A. Now it’s time to get up and move around.
B. Take a moment to think about your sitting activities.
C. Health experts also suggest exercising on a daily basis.
D. But this guideline is just too simple and abstract to make a difference.
E. As of today, average adult will spend 56-86% of their daily time sitting.

【导语】本文是篇议论文。在当今社会,许多人都有久坐的现象,作者在文章中说明了久坐的危害,并就如何解决这个问题,提出了指导方针。
【31题详解】
根据下一句“You’re probably sitting while reading this. Sometimes you sit when you are driving or attending a meeting. Other times you sit when you engage yourself in watching a movie or playing computer games. ”可知,作者列举了人们坐着的时候可能做的事情,与选项B中“sitting activities”意思相符,是对它的举例说明。故选B。

【34题详解】
上一句中““Sit less, move more””(少坐、多动)是引号引用的句子,根据下文中“Exercise guidelines are always more practical.”可以判断这是指的guideline(指导方针)。选项D中“this guideline”指代前面所提到的引号表达的指导方针。D项(但是这个指导方针太简单和抽象了,而起不了什么作用)与下一句“It is like telling someone to just ”exercise“ without telling them how. ”(它像是只是告诉某人要锻炼,却没说怎么锻炼。)句意有连续性,符合语境。故选D。
【35题详解】
上一段“It is like telling someone to just ”exercise“ without telling them how. ”提到了第一次给出的指导方针不够具体,存在缺点。下一句““It would probably be like, for every 30 continuous minutes of sitting, stand up and move or walk for five minutes at a quick pace,””中给出了新的比较具体的指导方针。选项C(为了弥补这个缺点,一个研究团队正在从事制定更为具体的指导方针。)起到了承上启下的作用,符合语境。故选G。
