The sun near the equator is never ceasing as I ride Elaine,a dark brown horse, through
thick bushes. It's been a long day on horseback. My legs ache and our camp signals across a
ridge of hills in the Lolldaiga Range of northern Kenya.
Suddenly panic takes hold of Elaine and the muscles of her body tense beneath me.Our
guide Nicholus stretches out a lean arm toward a bush just meters away.My eyes focus, trying
my best to see what the others already have:two amber balls glowing from a shadowed form.
It's a young lion, quick and strong,in the middle of the high grass.
A wild silence hangs between us.Without the defensive hunting vehicle,I feel completely
第4页(共12页)
exposed.Looking at the bush,I'm suspended between wonder and terror, the distance
between myself and the Savannah's most notable hunter unbelievably small.Usually.I'm the
one tracking the lion, camera in hand. Now,the lion shifts in my consciousness from object to
subject.I shift, too, strongly aware of the soft flesh of my own body.
Nicholus nods his head in the other direction,a safer distance away.He points to shallow
holes in the dust."Look, this is a big lion, and these are young ones, some cubs,"he says.
"Probably a mother."Pawprints mark the earth, each telling the story of more lions, moving
in different directions.I know it's time to go.
Horseback safaris are still the most immersive way to view wildlife in Kenya. To journey
on horseback is to break down the walls-meant to protect, but also to separate us from the
natural world. And as we're absorbed in the thrill of the experience,we're vividly reminded of
the importance of protecting these wild spaces.
Out here your horse is your translator, responding to the low hiss of a leopard, the soft
scent of an elephant herd, the cool morning breeze descending from Mount Kenya's glacial
peaks.Your job is to learn how to listen.

第5页(共12页)
There are two types of people:those who love nothing more than to be asked"Hey,can
you jump on a quick call?"and those who would rather give themselves an escape than start
dialing.According to a 2019 UK study of office workers, the latter group has grown in recent
years.
Sure, the voice-calling function on your phone may now be one of the least important
things, but it's still not something you can really avoid completely. You can make a restaurant
reservation or a doctor's appointment online, but you need to call when you're running late.
You can email a job application, but then you have to wait for the special type of hell that is the
phone interview.
弥
For growing numbers, picking up the phone takes a great effort-especially,if the call is
from an unknown number.Hating the phone doesn't necessarily mean you have social
anxiety-the two often go hand in hand, but some people who are otherwise perfectly fine with
social interactions have a deep-seated fear of making or receiving a call.
So why,to so many people, does the phone seem like a scarier option than texting? After
all, with written communication,at least, you have time on your side:time to gather your
thoughts, time to edit, and time to reconsider before hitting"send".The phone gives you no
such luxuries, meaning that until you hang up,you're thinking on your feet-and every word
is more of a gamble.Pauses are more loaded, too;in person, you can see when someone is
thinking or when they're distracted. But over the phone, especially for the anxiety-prone,
every silence can be a sign that things are going wrong.
It seems we still need the phone for reasons, large and small. And the first step to getting
over your fear is understanding why you have it in the first place.
28.What does the UK study find?
A.Using phones too much may bring social anxiety.
B.The number of people hating phone calls is increasing.
C.More and more people are willing to do office work.
D.Texting has become the phone's least important function.
29.Why are some examples mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To highlight the inconvenience of phone calls.
B.To illustrate the importance of in-person interactions.
C.To show the necessity of phone calls in certain situations.
D.To emphasize therise ofieommunication platforms.
第6页(共12页)
30.In what way does texting outweigh calling?
A.Calling sometimes costs much more.
B.Texting gives luxuries that allow people to rethink.
C.Texting is more efficient for making reservations.
D.Calling has silences which might produce conflict.
31.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Using phones as less as possible.
B.Avoiding silences while chatting on the phone.
C.Reminding friends when they're distracted.
D.Finding out the reason why one hates phone calls.

As the world prepares for a new space race, the American government is calling on NASA
to create a moon-based time standard. That's because time ticks by faster on the moon relative
to Earth. The difference is very small, but space flight needs extreme precision. And when
lunar spacecraft and satellites operate on an Earth-based time standard, that difference could
create problems, according to a recent report.
The new lunar time zone,Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC),is all about ensuring the
success of future, multinational missions to the moon, said Michelle Hanlon, the Executive
Director of the Center for Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi."It's not just the
US.There are precisely 36 nations going back to the moon and they are spread out across the
globe. So we've got to figure out one way where we can talk to everybody in the same time,"
she said.
The LTC would not be like a regular time zone on Earth. On Earth, those zones are set
using Coordinated Universal Time (UTC),which reflects a weighted average measurement of
hundreds of extremely precise atomic clocks placed around the globe.Due to the moon's lower
gravity and its motion relative to Earth, moon time passes 56 microseconds faster each earth
day.As a result,an atomic clock on Earth would run at a different rate from an atomic clock
on the moon.
The report also notes the creation of the LTC would require international agreements.
Hanlon said that because several players in today's space race are looking to land near the
moon's South Pole, figuring out an international standard will be crucial."We all agree that
space should be exclusively for peaceful purposes. We all agree that we have free access and
freedom of exploration and use,"she said."Let's all agree on how we're going to tell time on
the moon.”
第7页(共12页)
32.According to the American government,LTC is developed to
A.change the global time mode
B.motivate international space races
C.ensure lunar spacecraft's precise operation
D.enhance multinational communication
33.How does the author show the difference between LTC and UTC?
A.By highlighting their precision levels
B.By comparing their time passing rates.
C.By explaining their geographical coverage.
D.By discussing their atomic clock mechanisms.
34.What does Hanlon try to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Cooperation matters.
B.A unified time standard is vital.
C.Peaceful exploration counts.
D.More moon landings are crucial.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Wanted:A standard moon time
B.Debated:The future of atomic clocks
C.Free exploration and a lunar time system
D.Challenges of a multinational moon mission

Plogging is a great way to make your little area of the world a little cleaner, brighter and

you're already running or jogging, you should have a good pair of running shoes and running
apparel ()39 Otherwise, broken glass and sharp and dirty litter items you may pick

up will hurt you.A trash bag of some sort for collecting what you pick up is a must as well.
40 Theoretically, you can go plogging almost anywhere you have permission to be.
Depending on where you live, you may encounter trash along the side of the roads, parks,
school playgrounds, trails, parking lots, town squares and bike paths.
A.Plogging is not,in fact,a compound word of“plodding'”and“jogging”.
B.Beyond that, you'll need a good pair of gloves to protect your hands.
C.It's important that you have the right footwear.
D.Here are some of the top benefits of plogging.
E.It has since spread around the world.
F.Where should we go plogging?

(Text 2)
W:Excuse me,I really need this book for my research. Can I check it out.please?
M:Sorry.books in this section cannot be borrowed. But I can find a similar book for you.
W:That's great!Thanks!
(Tert 3)
M:Did you see the animal show last night?
W:Yes.My sister got me a ticket for the performance. Those animals were so cute.
(Text 4)
W:Put an ad on the Internet. We've got to find a person for this job.
M:Can you give me an idea about what sort of conditions we are offering?
W:Just say salary is negotiable based on qualifications and experience.
(Text 5)
W:What's the weather like for the picnic tomorrow?I got the food from the shop.
M:The forecast says it isn't bad.No rain but maybe a little windy.
W:Oh!It won't be good if things are blown away.
(Text 6)
M:This is amazing!I get to record my song in the same studio where so many famous artists have recorded.
W:Yes,the Center Room here in London is a pretty special place. We've had everyone from Paul Simon and Paul
McCartney to Ed Sheeran.more recently.
M:I saw Ed's video of the song he did here. He's a special guy.I don't know how he does all the recordings like
that.
W:It's great to watch him record. He's a good performer.

M:Not really.I'm in the middle of a game.
W:Alright.I'll just go alone.Have fun!I probably won't be back until after dinner. You can eat without me.
There is food left from lunch in the fridge.I'll take some food with me.I hope it doesn't attract wild animals,
like bears and mountain lions.
M:Are there large wild animals in this forest?
W:Yes.Didn't you read the signs when we were driving to the cottage?
M:Umm,no.I was busy playing this game on my phone.
W:I know.Well,if I don't come back by tomorrow morning, you can call the park keeper. He'll probably send out
a search group to look for me.
M:OK,OK.I'm coming with you!But we're not taking food, and we're coming back before dark.
(Tert 8)
M:Sometimes,I wish I could forget the past.
W:Do you have too many sad memorics?

ever talk.I miss him.
W:He's probably still hurt. Why don't you learn from your mistakes and call him?Maybe he misses you just as

M:I don't know...maybe he's too angry to talk to me.We're both as stubborn as donkeys.
W:All you can do is try!If it works, you'll both be happier.
M:You're right.I've been running from my past for too long.I'm his older brother, after all!He used to look up to

W:I think it's the right choice.Good luck!

NOVICA.We help people sell their handmade products. My role is to find people who make unique and well-
made items.Right now.we have 4,000 artists working with us.
W:And how does National Geographic help them?
M:Through the NOVICA program, artists can sell their handmade products directly to other people throughout the
world on our website. This way, they can get a fair price and reach a bigger market.Production is usually done
in the artists'own homes.
W:That sounds amazing! What kind of handmade products are available,Mr MacGregor?
M:Well, for example...I just got back from a trip to Peru.I was able to convince a young mother who makes
beautiful clothing to try out our program. And in three days,I'm off to Fiji to talk to a man who makes silver
jewelry with traditional designs. The program is intended to preserve cultural traditions and help people make a
better living with their art.

M:Welcome, everyone. This is Allan from Doctors'Research. As we all know, your job not only affects your
income, quality of life and happiness, but it also affects your health.A new study has suggested that having an
interesting job in your forties may reduce your risk of getting Alzheimer's disease in old age. After examining over
100,000 volunteers, the researchers found that people like government officers and lawyers are less likely to suffer
from Alzheimer's disease than vehicle drivers and teachers.Although lots of studies have suggested that keeping the
brain active by challenging yourself regularly likely reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease.none of them has found
that mentally demanding hobbies, like doing puzzles, have the same effect.Nor does reading. On the contrary,
regular exercise is recommended in helping lower the risk to some degree.
