Although the dates and traditions vary around the world, the spirit of gratitude is universal. Oct 5 has been designated by UNESCO as World Teachers’ Day, celebrated annually since 1994. On this day, schools and educational institutions host events such as seminars, award ceremonies and public acknowledgments to highlight the vital role of teachers. Many countries, including Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Canada, celebrate it on this date. In some other nations, however, Teachers’ Day is observed on different days. Here are a few examples. China — Sept 10 China’s Teachers’ Day is celebrated on Sept 10 every year since 1985. Schools often organize ceremonies to commend outstanding educators, while students present flowers, handmade cards or small gifts to their teachers. Media outlets often highlight inspiring stories of devoted teachers. The United States — Tuesday of the first full week in May In the US, National Teacher Day is observed on the Tuesday of the first full week in May. It’s part of Teacher Appreciation Week. During this week, schools, students and communities show appreciation through thank-you notes, school assemblies and special events, reinforcing gratitude for their dedication. India — Sept 5 India marks Teachers’ Day on Sept 5, honoring the birth anniversary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, an esteemed philosopher and the country’s second president. Since 1962, the day has been celebrated with cultural activities in schools and recognition of outstanding educators. It also features role-reversal activities where students teach the classes. Brazil — Oct 15 In Brazil, Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on Oct 15, commemorating the 1827 decree by Emperor Pedro I that established elementary education. Schools typically host ceremonies and family-inclusive commemorations, where students and families participate in tributes to educators. 21. Which country celebrates World Teachers’ Day on Oct 5? A. Belgium. B. China. C. The United States. D. Brazil. 22. What do the activities in China’s Teachers’ Day and India’s Teachers’ Day have in common? A. Recognizing outstanding educators. B. Highlighting inspiring stories of devoted teachers. C. Featuring role-reversal activities where students teach the classes. D. Hosting ceremonies and family-inclusive commemorations. 23. Which column might the text be taken from? A. Economy. B. Science. C. Art. D. Culture. B Whenever I complained that I was bored, my mother would not hand me a phone or switch on the television. Instead she would move from shelf to shelf, and return with some books in her arms. She would sit on the edge of my bed, describing each in a few words. My mother used books as a form of communication. It wasn’t simply the exchange I’ve just described — her giving me books she’d read and loved as a child, and hoping I would love them too — but the words in the books themselves. If we drove towards the Gladesville Bridge at night, the lights of cars streaming down, she would quote her favourite poet, who described headlights on the bridge as "the immaculate sigh of stars". To her, books gave voice to what she noticed. My mother’s gift for noticing small moments reflected an important quality: she deeply valued sensory details. She was always pointing them out to me, like young ducks, the fluff (绒毛) all over their bodies pale yellow, as though they wore bath towels. I didn’t realise it then, but those moments were quietly shaping the way I would later understand the world. Now as a literature teacher, I value sensory details as well. I often find myself encouraging my students to notice them, just as my mother once encouraged me. When talking about the Harry Potter series, I ask my students to consider whether it’s the lists of richly imagined foods, the all-flavour jellybeans and the butter beer that are the books’ real attraction. Only now do I realise how much of my mother I carry with me. What stays with me is not the titles she chose or the quotes she gave, but the habit of looking closely at the world. Borrowing lines from the books to describe our own lives, we’re adding depth to what we’ve seen or felt or heard. 24. What did the mother use to relieve the writer’s boredom? A. Television. B. Phones. C. Books. D. Food. 25. Why did the mother quote “the immaculate sigh of stars”? A. To vividly describe a small moment. B. To briefly explain a bridge structure. C. To express her love for the universe. D. To talk about her most beloved poet. 26. What does the writer emphasize in her teaching? A. Challenging literary classics. B. Paying mindful attention to details. C. Quoting the Harry Potter series. D. Developing creative imagination. 27. What does the writer learn from her mother? A. Poetic writing techniques. B. Vital communication skills. C. A method of self-reflection. D. A habit of close observation. C What can novelists learn from non-fiction? The greatest imagination is often fired with the depth of material that research offers. Sure, you can imagine anything, but readers will not necessarily believe anything. Truth doesn’t have to be true, but it does have to be credible (We’ve all read something unrealistic that the author insists “really happened!”). I’ve written a few historical novels, including a series based in early Victorian London. That kind of fiction requires a lot of research just at the level of what people wear, eat and how they live their lives. Then you need location details: buildings, streets, smells, sounds, etc. It looks laborious but it’s almost as much fun as the actual writing. I spent months reading books and newspapers produced in the 1840s. The novel’s plot would be mine, but everything it rested on was pure historical research. Anthony Burgess was once waiting to meet his publisher in London and decided to leaf through a pile of the newest bestselling thrillers on the reception’s coffee table. He noted that each book was based on a specific subject area — avalanches (雪崩), oil-drilling work — and understood that readers don’t just want a story. They also want to learn something about an unknown subject. They want fiction and non-fiction combined. I’ve also written history. I already knew about the history of the Greek town I’d decided to focus on, but I wanted to make it appealing to the general reader using the techniques I’d used in fiction. The result was mostly an experiment in structure. I decided to tell the history in a non-chronological (非按时间顺序的) way, focusing instead on themes that would allow me to group different and individual stories in ways that would hold together like chapters in fiction. The whole history would be told eventually, but it would come together gradually like a plot rather than “in order” as it happened. As such, it appeared to be almost like a novel, though everything in it is history. 28. What quality should a novel carry according to paragraph 1? A. Readability. B. Reliability. C. Authenticity. D. Originality. 29. What did the research into Victorian London serve to ensure? A. Visual presentation. B. Identity exploration. C. Theme relevance. D. Historical accuracy. 30. What do readers expect from a book according to Anthony Burgess? A. Novel content. B. Varied settings. C. Thrilling elements. D. Immersive experience. 31. How did the author tell the history of the Greek town? A. By following the timeline. B. By respecting historical events. C. By combining facts and fantasy. D. By adopting a fictional organization. D Botanists have known that plants can communicate via chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). When plants are attacked by pests, the composition of the VOCs they release changes. Previous work has shown that this drives nearby plants to raise their own defences in anticipation of being attacked in turn. What has gone unexplored is whether plants detect VOCs released by their neighbours when they are healthy. So ecologist Velemir Ninkovic decided to run an experiment. Dr. Ninkovic and his colleagues planted three varieties of barley (大麦) that grow at different rates — one quick, one slow, and one middling. The plants were put in growing containers next to one another, but with no way for them to shade their neighbours. The only connection that the plants had to one another was through one-way air channels that connected their growing containers. These allowed the researchers to blow air from one container to the next, and to monitor the effect that this had on the plants over 25 days. The results were striking. The slow-growing barley grew more quickly when it was exposed to air from the containers of its fast-growing cousins, producing 20% more biomass than when it was placed next to slower-growing plants. This, Dr. Ninkovic believes, is because the slow-growing plants were detecting the compounds released by their neighbours and realising that, in the wild at least, they would be at risk of getting shaded out if they did not get a shift on. Fast-growing plants exposed to air from the containers of their slow-growing cousins reacted in the opposite way. With less need to race for the sun, they cut their growth rates notably. While the slow growers were switching resources towards growth, the speedsters were able to spend more of theirs on resource-intensive defensive measures. Barley, in other words, can chemically detect their competitors, and adjust their own growing strategies accordingly. Farmers are already experimenting with using VOCs to boost productivity. Dr. Ninkovic’s results suggest VOCs could be used to stimulate protective compounds when pests are expected, or to accelerate growth when risk is low. 32. What role did the one-way air channels play in the experiment? A. They allowed sharing nutrients. B. They helped defend against pests. C. They regulated experiment conditions. D. They prevented plants’ overshadowing. 33. What does the underlined phrase “get a shift on” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Give in. B. Speed up. C. Move away. D. Watch out. 34. What happened to the fast-growing barley when exposed to air from its rivals? A. They invested more in self-protection. B. They stopped growing to avoid competition. C. They grew faster to maintain their advantage. D. They released more VOCs to warn their rivals. 35. What is the text mainly about? A. The role of VOCs in plant defense. B. Why plants grow at different rates. C. How plants keep spying on the competition. D. The benefits of planting crops in different places. Touching movies, stressful events at home or work, and even good news like a wedding or a baby might bring on the waterworks. ____36____ But you might not know that crying can have a big effect on your body and mind — here’s how. ● Crying relieves stress. Humans are the only species to weep from emotions, but scientists still don’t know exactly how the physical act of crying is connected to our feelings. ____37____ Maybe it helps relieve the physical tension of feeling upset. In other words, crying occurs as our body returns from an aroused “fight or flight” state to a calm “rest and digest” state. ● ____38____ You might think that crying would make you feel better if it means your stress is relieved — it does, sometimes. “In surveys about two-thirds of people generally report feeling better after crying,” says Jonathan Rottenberg, a professor at the University of South Florida. In many cases, however, the better mood after having cried is the consequence of receiving emotional support and comfort. ● Crying strengthens bonds. When we communicate with others through tears, we are revealing our own vulnerability (脆弱). “With supportive people, it can create an increased feeling of bonding and connection,” Dr. Orloff says. “You trust the person enough to cry around them.” ____39____ And this can promote an empathetic response and an emotional connection. ● Crying helps us get what we want. Tears can be a way to cause a specific reaction that works in our favor. ____40____ Even if we don’t mean to control others, our crying may have the result of easing anger and making others feel guilty or more willing to bend to our will. A. Crying boosts mood. B. Crying lets you release emotions in private. C. Sometimes, you just need to let the tears flow. D. Why do we cry when we’re sad (and sometimes happy)? E. Crying is, therefore, a signal that we feel close to someone. F. So, it may take a while before crying makes you feel better. G. Anyone who’s ever cried after getting pulled over for speeding knows that. I have stage fright. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order. There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside. My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors. It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue. A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned. Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience (良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going. I realized it was me who was at fault. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 树德中学高2025级高二上学期10月阶段性测试英语试题 本试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟 第一部分:听力(共两小节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题,每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 Why does the woman complain about the new office? If you haven’t managed to get your tickets yet, please make your way to the office as soon as possible to purchase them. All the profits from this event are going towards a new charity which we have finally chosen after much discussion. Animal Rescue was an extremely popular suggestion, though it didn’t quite get as many votes as The Children’s Society in the end. Last year we managed to raise an impressive £750 for Water Aid, and we sincerely hope to raise even more money this year. And I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you who have so kindly offered to help set up the hall on the day. I am pleased to announce that I now have some volunteers who will organize the refreshments for the evening and check the tickets at the door. However, I am still looking for another person who would be willing to design the poster for the concert. Please come and see me later today if you think you can help with this important task. A Teachers’ Day is a special occasion to honor the dedication of educators who shape future generations. A. Economy. B. Science. C. Art. D. Culture. A 22. A 23. (学校经常组织表彰杰出教育工作者的仪式,而学生们则向老师献上鲜花、手工卡片或小礼物)”和India部分的“Since 1962, the day has been celebrated with cultural activities in schools and recognition of outstanding educators. 故选A项。 通读全文,尤其是第一段“Teachers’ Day is a special occasion to honor the dedication of educators who shape future generations. Although the dates and traditions vary around the world, the spirit of gratitude is universal. C 25. A 26. B 27. 根据第一段“When I complained that I was bored, my mother would not hand me a phone or switch on the television. Instead she would move from shelf to shelf, and return with some books in her arms.(每当我抱怨无聊时,我妈妈不会递给我手机或打开电视。 根据第二段“If we drove towards the Gladesville Bridge at night, the lights of cars streaming down, she would quote her favourite poet, who described headlights on the bridge as "the immaculate sigh of stars". To her, books gave voice to what she noticed. 根据第四段“Now as a literature teacher, I value sensory details as well. I often find myself encouraging my students to notice them, just as my mother once encouraged me. 根据最后一段“What stays with me is not the titles she chose or the quotes she gave, but the habit of looking closely at the world.(留在我心中的不是她选择的书名或她引用的话,而是仔细观察世界的习惯。)” C What can novelists learn from non-fiction? B 29. D 30. A 31. 根据第一段“Sure, you can imagine anything, but readers will not necessarily believe anything. Truth doesn’t have to be true, but it does have to be credible (We’ve all read something unrealistic that the author insists ‘really happened!’).(诚然,你可以想象任何事物,但读者未必会相信所有内容。 根据第二段“That kind of fiction requires a lot of research just at the level of what people wear, eat and how they live their lives. Then you need location details: buildings, streets, smells, sounds, etc.(这类小说需要大量研究,涉及人们的穿着、饮食以及生活方式,还需要地点细节:建筑、街道、气味、声音等等。)”以及“The novel’s plot would be mine, but everything it rested on was pure historical research.(小说情节是作者原创,但支撑小说的一切都来自纯粹的历史研究。)” 根据第三段“He noted that each book was based on a specific subject area — avalanches (雪崩), oil‑drilling work — and understood that readers don’t just want a story. They also want to learn something about an unknown subject. They want fiction and non‑fiction combined.(他注意到每本书都围绕某一特定主题展开——雪崩、石油钻探工作——并且意识到读者不只是想看一个故事。 根据最后一段“I decided to tell the history in a non‑chronological (时间顺序的) way, focusing instead on themes that would allow me to group different and individual stories in ways that would hold together like chapters in fiction.(我决定不按照时间顺序来讲述这段历史,转而围绕各类主题,把一个个独立各异的故事整合在一起,使其衔接连贯,如同小说的各个章节。)”以及“As such, it appeared to be almost like a novel, though everything in it is history.(如此一来,这本书读起来几乎就像一部小说,然而书中所有内容均为史实。)” D Botanists have known that plants can communicate via chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). C 33. B 34. A 35. 根据第二段中“The only connection that the plants had to one another was through one-way air channels that connected their growing containers. These allowed the researchers to blow air from one container to the next, and to monitor the effect that this had on the plants over 25 days. 根据第三段“The slow-growing barley grew more quickly when it was exposed to air from the containers of its fast-growing cousins, producing 20% more biomass than when it was placed next to slower-growing plants. This, Dr. Ninkovic believes, is because the slow-growing plants were detecting the compounds released by their neighbours and realising that, in the wild at least, they would be at risk of getting shaded out if they did not get a shift on. 根据第四段中“While the slow growers were switching resources towards growth, the speedsters were able to spend more of theirs on resource‑intensive defensive measures. 根据全文内容,尤其是最后一段“Barley, in other words, can chemically detect their competitors, and adjust their own growing strategies accordingly. 36. C 37. D 38. A 39. E 40. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: I realized it was me who was at fault. I had been so focused on keeping the party under control that I failed to consider how important Toby was to my brother during this difficult time. My pride had kept me from reaching out, and now months had passed without a proper conversation. One evening, I picked up the phone and left him a voice message, apologizing for my behavior and asking if we could meet. To my relief, he called back the next day, and we agreed to get together soon. With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. He opened it with a surprised smile, and for a moment, neither of us spoke. Then we hugged — something we hadn’t done since before his wife passed away. We sat on the porch with Toby resting beside us, and I handed him the box of biscuits. “Thank you,” he said quietly. We talked for hours, laughing, remembering old times, and slowly rebuilding what had been lost. As I watched Toby gently rest his head on my brother’s leg, I knew we were finally on the path to healing. 词汇激活 行为类 ①道歉:apologize/say sorry/make an apology ②拥抱:hug/embrace ③重建:rebuild/restore/reconstruct 情绪类: ①宽慰:relief/comfort/satisfaction/ease ②惊讶:surprised /shocked/astonished 【点睛】[高分句型1] I had been so focused on keeping the party under control that I failed to consider how important Toby was to my brother during this difficult time.(运用了“so...that...”引导结果状语从句以及how引导宾语从句) [高分句型2] One evening, I picked up the phone and left him a voice message, apologizing for my behavior and asking if we could meet.(运用了现在分词短语作状语以及if引导的宾语从句) [高分句型 3] As I watched Toby gently rest his head on my brother’s leg, I knew we were finally on the path to healing.(运用了as引导时间状语从句以及省略that的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $注意,回答听力部分时,请先将答案标在试卷上。 how do you like working in the new office?
