W: I’m sorry, officer. I won’t do it again. Could you please let me off with a warning?
M: I’m afraid I can’t do that, Madam. In school zones, I’m required to give tickets to all drivers who break the rules. It’s the law in this county.
W: Oh, dear! What is this going to cost me?
M: I don’t know, Madam. Usually, these things can be taken care of for less than$100. Now please sign here at the bottom.

Many kids who grow up in big cities have lots of opportunities to experience science hands-on. There are zoos, museums and school field trips. But those conditions are sometimes out of reach for lower-income children. And in some rural areas, those opportunities simply don’t exist at all.
Dan Sudran has taken it upon himself to help close the gap. Growing up a good, studious kid in Kansas, he followed the rules and went to college, then law school. But he was confused. “I couldn’t really figure out what I was or what I was supposed to be,” Sudran says. Sudran finally had his answer in his late 30s. He started taking apart electronics and collecting materials from the beach. In school, science had held no interest for him at all. But out in the real world, it turned out to be the thing he’d been missing all along. “My life becomes better since I got into science,” Sudran says.
And that inspired him. What if he could give children the same experience he’d waited 30 years to discover? So Sudran got a college to donate some space and equipment. Pretty soon, a small nonprofit project called the Community Science Workshop Network was born.
Today there are six workshops, almost all in low-income neighborhoods around California. One of the workshops is filled with stuff: microscopes, power tools, even a turtle and a snake. There’s no curriculum, nothing to memorize but tools to play and experiment with. Eighth-grader Jose Vega is working hard at building a robot while Esteban Espinoza, 6, is getting tadpoles (蝌蚪) out of a tank to examine them under a microscope. One group of kids are spreading out on the floor, trying to figure out how to build a hot air balloon.
Sudran’s dream, he says, is to take this model of quick hands-on science all over the world. Next up, Sudran hopes, will be the small Southern California desert town of Coachella.
24.What can we know about Dan Sudran from the first two paragraphs?
A.He makes a clear plan for his life. B.He had vast experience in field trips.
C.He has a strong sense of responsibility. D.He showed an interest in science at school.
25.What gave Sudran the idea for the Community Science Workshop Network?
A.His pursuit of better life. B.His practice of science.
C.His dream in childhood. D.His devotion to education.
26.Why does the author list examples in paragraph 4?
A.To show the function of the project. B.To reveal the history of the project.
C.To stress the importance of science. D.To record the growth of the students.
27.What does Sudran decide to do next?
A.Become a science teacher. B.Build more science workshops.
C.Move to desert town of Coachella. D.Find new models of learning science.
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.B
根据第一段“But those conditions are sometimes out of reach for lower-income children. And in some rural areas, those opportunities simply don’t exist at all.(但这些条件有时对低收入家庭的儿童来说是遥不可及的。在一些农村地区,这样的机会根本就不存在。)”和第二段“Dan Sudran has taken it upon himself to help close the gap.(Dan Sudran已经承担起帮助缩小这一差距的责任。)”
根据第二段下半部分“He started taking apart electronics and collecting materials from the beach. In school, science had held no interest for him at all. But out in the real world, it turned out to be the thing he’d been missing all along. ‘My life becomes better since I got into science,’ Sudran says.(他开始拆解电子产品,并从海滩上收集材料。在学校里,他对科学根本不感兴趣。但在现实世界中,这正是他一直想念的东西。Sudran说:‘自从我进入科学领域,我的生活变得更好了’。)”和第三段中“And that inspired him. What if he could give children the same experience he’d waited 30 years to discover? So Sudran got a college to donate some space and equipment. Pretty soon, a small nonprofit project called the Community Science Workshop Network was born.(这激发了他的灵感。如果他能给孩子们带来他等待 30 年才发现的相同体验,那会怎样?因此,Sudran 找了一所大学捐赠了一些空间和设备。很快,一个名为 Community Science Workshop Network 的小型非营利项目诞生了。)”可知,是Sudran的科学实践让他有了创建社区科学工作坊网络的想法,他想让孩子们也能体验到科学的乐趣。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段“Today there are six workshops, almost all in low-income neighborhoods around California. One group of kids are spreading out on the floor, trying to figure out how to build a hot air balloon.(如今,加州有六个工作坊,几乎都在低收入的社区。 故选A。
最后一段提到“Sudran’s dream, he says, is to take this model of quick hands-on science all over the world. Next up, Sudran hopes, will be the small Southern California desert town of Coachella.(Sudran说,他的梦想是将这种快速动手科学的模式带到世界各地。Sudran希望,接下来将是南加州沙漠小镇科切拉。)”可知,Sudran接下来决定建立更多的科学工作坊,将他的项目推广到世界各地,科切拉只是他接下来计划中的一个地方。故选B。

Visibility of, and investment in, generative AI – programs such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, and other large language model (LLM) based technologies – has exploded in the past couple of years, bringing with it a whole host of benefits and drawbacks. But amongst all the existential dread and alarming levels of misinformation, there’s one far more practical concern that has so far gone unnoticed: what are we going to do with all the e-waste we’re creating?
“The e-waste generated by generative AI, particularly large language models, could total as much as 5 million tons by the end of the decade – around 2,000 times the amount produced in 2023,” Asaf Tzachor, a sustainability and climate researcher at Reichman University in Israel, told DW recently. E-waste is already a big problem – as the United Nations points out, “the 62 million tons of e-waste generated in 2022 would fill 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks, roughly enough trucks to form a bumper-to-bumper line encircling the equator.”
And here’s the thing: tackling the problem is pretty much a win-win, since not only will it stop millions of people, including children, dying from exposure to harmful chemicals and pollution – but e-waste is also famously full of super-valuable minerals and resources. “There's more gold and silver in a tonne of iPhones than a tonne of ore from a gold or silver mine,” Lisa McLean, chief executive officer of research and advocacy group Circular Australia, told ABC.
“The range of 16-86 percent reduction reflects the immense potential of these strategies, especially if supported by policies, and when widely implemented across industries and regions,” said Saurabh Gupta, founder of India-based sustainability organization Earth5R.
So, what’s the solution? Well, there’s no silver bullet, but Tzachor highlighted a few strategies to help minimize the future attack of e-waste. First, we should aim to prolong the use of existing hardware – basically, use things for longer, rather than throwing them out as soon as the next shiny thing catches our eye. Second, we should aim to re-use devices and components – which includes designing hardware so as to make this easier.
28. What has turned into a more practical issue about AI?
A. The decrease in its investment.
B.The management of e-waste.
C. The spread of misinformation.

Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous painting, the Mona Lisa, inspired the Mona Lisa effect: the subject of an image is always looking directly at you, no matter where you stand.
But according to research by scientists from Germany’s Bielefeld University, published in the journal i-Perception, there’s one painting that definitively doesn’t demonstrate the Mona Lisa effect: the Mona Lisa herself.
Horstmann and his assistants asked 24 participants to assess the stare of the Mona Lisa. Instead of simply asking each participant whether they felt the Mona Lisa was looking at them; they displayed the painting on a computer screen, and asked the participants to measure the direction of the stare on a two-meter ruler placed horizontally (水平地) between them and the screen.
The distance between the participants and the computer screen remained the same, at 66 cm, but the ruler was moved both closer to and further away from the screen throughout the trial. The researchers also altered the size and visible area of the Mona Lisa to determine whether the perception of her stare was influenced by particular elements of her face. The participants were asked to respond to the painting at various degrees of zoom (焦距), between 30% and 70%, and saw crops that only included her eyes and nose, as well as others that showed her whole head. To avoid the participants settling on the same measurement on the ruler every time, the participants were showed the Mona Lisa moved 3.4 cm to the left and right.
Previous research cited in the study indicates the range of the Mona Lisa effect: the subject of an image will appear to be looking at its viewer if its stare is within 5 degrees to the left or right. The stare of the “Mona Lisa”, however, was measured by the study participants at an average angle of 15.4 degrees to the right — in short, the Mona Lisa is definitely not looking at her audience.
“There is no doubt about the existence of the Mona Lisa effect,” Horstmann concluded. “It just does not occur with Mona Lisa herself.”
32.What’s the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To present the topic of the text. B.To argue over a conclusion.
C.To popularize some knowledge. D.To provide some guidance.
33.How was the research carried out?
A.By conducting a questionnaire survey.
B.By comparing different types of paintings.
C.By evaluating the subject from different angles.
D.By analyzing the main features of the painting.
34.What does the underlined word “crops” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Parts of a painting. B.Techniques of drawing.
C.Movements of a picture. D.Measurements of a photo.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Mona Lisa: A Masterpiece.
B.Does Mona Lisa Really Look at You?
C.A Phenomenon: The Mona Lisa Effect.
D.What Is the Range of the Mona Lisa Effect?
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.A 35.B
根据第一段“Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous painting, the Mona Lisa, inspired the Mona Lisa effect: the subject of an image is always looking directly at you, no matter where you stand.(达·芬奇的世界名画《蒙娜丽莎》启发了蒙娜丽莎效应:无论你站在哪里,画中的主体总是直视着你)”和第二段“But according to research by scientists from Germany’s Bielefeld University, published in the journal i-Perception, there’s one painting that definitively doesn’t demonstrate the Mona Lisa effect: the Mona Lisa herself.(但根据德国比勒费尔德大学科学家在《i-Perception》杂志上发表的研究,有一幅画绝对没有表现出蒙娜丽莎效应:那就是蒙娜丽莎本人)”可知,第一段提出了文章的主题,即蒙娜丽莎效应在蒙娜丽莎本人身上并不存在。故选A。
根据第三段“Horstmann and his assistants asked 24 participants to assess the stare of the Mona Lisa. Instead of simply asking each participant whether they felt the Mona Lisa was looking at them, they displayed the painting on a computer screen, and asked the participants to measure the direction of the stare on a two-meter ruler placed horizontally between them and the screen.(霍斯特曼和他的助手让24名参与者评估蒙娜丽莎的凝视。他们没有简单地询问每位参与者是否觉得蒙娜丽莎在看着他们,而是将这幅画显示在电脑屏幕上,并让参与者用放在他们和屏幕之间水平放置的两米长的尺子测量凝视的方向)”和第四段“The distance between the participants and the computer screen remained the same, at 66 cm, but the ruler was moved both closer to and further away from the screen throughout the trial. The researchers also altered the size and visible area of the Mona Lisa to determine whether the perception of her stare was influenced by particular elements of her face.(参与者和电脑屏幕之间的距离保持不变,为66厘米,但在整个试验过程中,尺子被移近和移远屏幕。
故选A。
通读全文,并结合第二段“But according to research by scientists from Germany’s Bielefeld University, published in the journal i-Perception, there’s one painting that definitively doesn’t demonstrate the Mona Lisa effect: the Mona Lisa herself.(但根据德国比勒费尔德大学科学家在《i-Perception》杂志上发表的研究,有一幅画绝对没有表现出蒙娜丽莎效应:那就是蒙娜丽莎本人)”可知,本文主要介绍了一项研究,研究表明蒙娜丽莎并没有看着观众,即蒙娜丽莎效应在蒙娜丽莎本人身上并不存在,选项B“蒙娜丽莎真的在看你吗”能够概括文章主旨,适合作本文标题。
The Diderot Effect is what happens when a new possession makes our old things look bad so we feel a need to replace them all. You buy your kids new backpacks for school and they complain that their pencil cases and lunch bags don’t match, so you buy them new pencil cases and lunch bags. Then, of course, you can’t put their old pencils in new pencil cases so you buy new pencils, and pens. 36 This cycle of replacing old items with new ones can be endless, and even if we’ve never heard the name before, it’s hard to deny the impact of the Diderot Effect on our lives. So, what steps can you take to break this endless cycle of consumption?
Recognize it before it happens.
37 Don’t let every new item start an endless spiral of purchases. Each time you buy something new, remind yourself that the other items you’re feeling tempted (被引诱的) to replace were perfectly fine until now — and probably still are.
Buy new items that fit what you already have.
When you do need to buy something new, finding pieces that fit what you already own will reduce the temptation to replace perfectly good things. For example, add a new piece of furniture that matches your existing room decor Otherwise, you’ll need to buy everything new. 38
Practise mindful shopping.
Mindful shopping is about being fully aware of your thoughts and feelings before purchasing a new item. 39 That is, before buying anything, stop and ask yourself a few mindful shopping questions. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, you’ll decide you don’t really need the item.
40
Despite what marketers want you to believe, it’s good to remind yourself that material possessions don’t define your self-worth. Ensure you buy items because you really need or want them, and not just to impress your social circle.
A.Let go of wanting things.
B.Remember that things are just things.
C.How can we reduce the chances of out-of-control spending?
D.Do you see how this pattern can lead to unnecessary spending?
E.It requires you to question if you truly need something.
F.This is because the new piece mismatches your existing style.
G.The first step to breaking the cycle is to be aware of the Diderot Effect and prevent it.
36.根据上文“The Diderot Effect is what happens when a new possession makes our old things look bad so we feel a need to replace them all. You buy your kids new backpacks for school and they complain that their pencil cases and lunch bags don’t match, so you buy them new pencil cases and lunch bags. Then, of course, you can’t put their old pencils in new pencil cases so you buy new pencils, and pens.(“狄德罗效应”指的是,当一件新东西让我们的旧东西看起来很糟糕,所以我们觉得有必要把它们全部替换掉。你给孩子们买了新的书包,他们抱怨铅笔盒和午餐袋不匹配,所以你给他们买了新的铅笔盒和午餐袋。然后,当然,你不能把他们的旧铅笔放在新的铅笔盒里,所以你买新的铅笔和钢笔)”以及后文“This cycle of replacing old items with new ones can be endless, and even if we’ve never heard the name before, it’s hard to deny the impact of the Diderot Effect on our lives. So, what steps can you take to break this endless cycle of consumption?(这种以旧换新的循环可能是无止境的,即使我们以前从未听说过这个名字,也很难否认狄德罗效应对我们生活的影响。那么,你可以采取哪些措施来打破这种无休止的消费循环呢?)”可知,上文解释了一种购物效应,推测本句应说明这种效应所带来的影响。故D选项“你知道这种模式会导致不必要的开支吗”符合语境,故选D。
37.根据标题“Recognize it before it happens.(在它发生之前意识到它)”以及后文“Don’t let every new item start an endless spiral of purchases. Each time you buy something new, remind yourself that the other items you’re feeling tempted (被引诱的) to replace were perfectly fine until now — and probably still are.(不要让每一件新物品都引发无休止的购买。每次你买新东西的时候,提醒自己那些你想要替换的东西直到现在都很好——可能现在仍然很好)”可知,后文提到不要让每一件新物品都引发无休止的购买,提醒自己那些你想要替换的东西直到现在都很好,说明了预先提醒自己不要过多消费,加以预防。故G选项“打破这个循环的第一步是意识到狄德罗效应并加以预防”符合语境,故选G。
38.根据上文“When you do need to buy something new, finding pieces that fit what you already own will reduce the temptation to replace perfectly good things. For example, add a new piece of furniture that matches your existing room decor (装饰风格). Otherwise, you’ll need to buy everything new.(当你确实需要买新东西的时候,找一些适合你已经拥有的东西会减少你更换完美的东西的诱惑。例如,添加一件与你现有房间装饰相匹配的新家具。否则,你所有东西就得买新的了)”可知,上文提到了买了新家具所有东西就得买新的,本句承接上文,说明会发生这种情况的原因。故F选项“这是因为这件新家具和你现有的款式不匹配”符合语境,故选F。
39.根据上文“Mindful shopping is about being fully aware of your thoughts and feelings before purchasing a new item.(有意识购物是指在购买新物品之前充分意识到自己的想法和感受)”可知,上文提到了有意识购物的概念,推测本句承接上文,说明有意识购物的内在要求,E选项中It指代上文Mindful shopping。
40.根据本段内容“Despite what marketers want you to believe, it’s good to remind yourself that material possessions don’t define your self-worth. Ensure you buy items because you really need or want them, and not just to impress your social circle.(不管营销人员想让你相信什么,提醒自己物质财富并不能定义你的自我价值是件好事。确保你买东西是因为你真的需要或想要它们,而不仅仅是为了给你的社交圈留下深刻印象)”可知,本段主要说明了提醒自己物质财富并不能定义你的自我价值是件好事,即强调了东西只是东西,不出于其他目的去购物东西。故B选项“记住,东西只是东西”符合语境,故选B。

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Most architects look to control nature, while Yu Kongjian, a Chinese landscape architect, wants nature to take over. Intense storms are on the rise and cities across the world are finding 56 difficult to manage floodwaters. But instead of using concrete-based engineering ways 57 (defend) against the increasing floodwaters, Mr. Yu is developing 58 might seem like an unexpected response: Let the water in.
“You cannot fight water,” Mr. Yu said. “You have to adapt to it.” He wants to reduce the destructive force of floodwaters 59 slowing them and giving them room to spread out. Mr. Yu calls 60 concept “sponge city (海绵城市)” and says it’s like doing tai chi with water, a reference to the Chinese martial art in which an opponent’s energy and moves 61 (redirect), not resisted.
The problem with concrete-based solutions 62 (be) that they are expensive, lack 63 (flexible) and require constant maintenance. Sponge cities create new parks, restore wetlands and set up rain gardens and pavements. Mr. Yu’s proposal is this: Create areas with porous (多孔的) earth where local plants can grow well with little maintenance. If it rains, the earth and plants will absorb the water, preventing some or even all of it from flooding nearby areas. Any extra water not 64 (absorb) by the vegetation will at least be slowed, unlike concrete, which can instead 65 (dangerous) speed up water flow.
56.it 57.to defend 58.what 59.by/through 60.the/this 61.are redirected 62.is 63.flexibility 64.absorbed 65.dangerously
故填it。
故填to defend。
故填what。
故填by/through。
故填the/this。
本句是in which引导的定语从句,redirect作从句谓语,和主语an opponent’s energy and moves之间是被动关系,用被动语态,根据前文的says和calls可知,用一般现在时。故填are redirected。
故填is。

When we arrived in Tournus, Gabriel and I parked our bikes near the wharf and walked to the town square, starving after a 33-kilometer ride. We made it within one and a half hours, which is really something! We planned to get lunch and then bike back to Macon, a city on the Saone River where I was staying with Gabriel’s family for the summer.
It was market day, bustling with locals buying groceries and tourists hunting for souvenirs. We bought a long, thin loaf of bread called a baguette and some Brie, a soft cheese I’m obsessed with. It tastes awesome with the crispy crust of the baguette. While eating, I noticed a girl in a USA Basketball T-shirt smiling at us.
Basketball is popular in France too. You can even watch NBA games on TV. The girl stopped to buy cookies with someone that I guessed was her mom because they looked so much alike. We later saw her and her mom by the river, enjoying pastries(糕点) on a bench near a riverboat named Voyageur, which had docked earlier. Then they boarded the boat. As it was preparing to leave, I spotted a colorful shopping bag on the bench. The girl had left it! Gabriel and I called out to her in French and English, waving the bag. When the girl noticed us, she was surprised but disappointed as the boat began to leave. Gabriel suggested throwing it to her, but I feared it would fall into the river. We had to find another way !
Running alongside the boat, Gabriel learned from a sailor that the next stop was Macon-our destination as well. It would take the boat just under two hours at a speed of 12 knots. Gabriel searched on the phone about the speed. “That’s 22 kilometers-or 14 miles-per hour,” he said. “Do you think we can keep up?” I asked. With a laugh, he replied, “We’re about to find out!”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

I threw the bag over my shoulder, and we set off . We pedaled as fast as we could, our hearts pounding with excitement and determination. We skillfully navigated through the traffic, taking sharp turns with precision and Gabriel occasionally glancing at his phone to monitor our speed. Our legs burned with effort, but the thought of returning the girl’s bag kept us going. As we drew closer to Macon, the sight of the Voyageur docking at the wharf came into view.We flew off our bikes and dashed to the boat, waving the bag at the girl.
The girl’s eyes lit up with astonishment while her mom clapped in delight. They hadn’t anticipated that we would make such an effort to pedal our bikes and catch up with them. The girl eagerly rushed over and took the bag from me, showering us with heartfelt thanks in fluent French. Her mom joined in, offering us some pastries as a token of their appreciation. We waved goodbye, feeling a sense of accomplishment as the Voyageur sailed off into the distance, leaving us with a memory of kindness and determination that would last a lifetime.

Dear Ryan,
How is it going? You won’t believe it — the 4×400m relay at our Winter Sports Meet totally stole the spotlight!
The story goes like this. Our lead runner was racing towards victory, when out of nowhere, he tripped and fell just a few meters from the finish line, spraining his ankle. Despite the intense pain, he struggled to his feet and inched towards the finish line determinedly, which earned great cheers of encouragement from the crowd, fueling his resolve. Finally, he made it. His perseverance is admirable and inspiring, serving as a powerful reminder that we should never give up easily when striving for our goals, however difficult the circumstances.
Stay in touch and exchange more of our life’s beautiful stories in the future.
Best regards,
Li Hua

D. The improvement of its visibility.
29. How much e-waste was generated by generative AI in 2023 according to the text?
A. About 2,500 tons.
B. About 5 million tons.
C. 62 million tons more or less.
D. Approximately 2.5 million tons.
30. What can we learn about e-waste from Lisa McLean?
A. E - waste is more harmful than beneficial.
B. E - waste can be replaced by valuable minerals.
C. E-waste is a significant source of gold and silver.
D. E-waste is overlooked in the recycling industry.
31. What can people do to minimize e-waste according to Tzachor?
A. Replacing the important components
B. Getting rid of old hardware immediately.
C. Improving the sustainability of hardware.
D. Updating new types of hardware frequently.
D
