14、 When I was 13 years old, the doctor said that I had a kind of attention disorder. So when everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I couldn’t.
In my first class, Mrs Green asked us to read a story and then write on it within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs Green, you see, I have attention problems. I might not be able to do that.” She looked at me and said, “You are no different from your classmates, young man.” I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading. So I took it home.
In my bedroom, it was so quiet and the story suddenly became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he invented a reading system which opened up a new world to the blind.Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted (有视力的)” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs Green, so when it came back to me the next day with an “A” on it, I couldn’t believe my eyes. In their last moment before the flight took off, I heard a father saying to his daughter, “ I love you, I wish you enough.” The daughter said, “Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough to.” They kissed goodbye and the daughter left. I could see the father was very sad.
Suddenly the father walked towards me and asked me, “Did you ever say goodbye to someone knowing it would be the last time?”
His words made me think of my father. Realizing that my father’s days were limited(有限的),I took the time to tell him face to face how much he meant to me. So I understood what this father was experiencing.
“ Yes, I did.” I answered, “ But why is this a last goodbye?”
“ I am old and my daughter lives much too far away. Maybe her next trip back will be for my funeral (葬礼),” he said.
“ When you were saying goodbye, I heard you say ‘I wish you enough’. What does that mean?”
He began to smile. “my parents used to say it to me . When we say ‘I wish you enough’,we want the other person to have a life filled with enough good things.” He stopped for a moment and continued, “I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate (欣赏、感激) the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life seem much bigger… I wish you enough ‘Hellos’ to get you through the final ‘ Goodbye’”.

16、London used to be “foggy”( 有雾的) for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was in fact smog(烟雾), a mixture of smoke and fog.In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal(煤)that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1920s, London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city. In a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more “pea-soupers”.
Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 10 or 20 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people’s houses. If these factories were closed, this would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel(燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.
However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer “pea-soupers” in Beijing than there used to be.
1.What was the main reason for air pollution in London?
A.There was too much smoke in the sky.
B.There were too many factories in the city.
C.People burnt too much coal in the houses.
D.The city was too big for the cleaners to clean.
2.What does the underlined word “pea-soupers” refer to?
A.Smog B.Smoke
C.Gas D.Coal
3.Which sentence is Not true?
A.Air pollution is serious in Beijing and Chongqing.
B.Using coal is much more expensive than using gas.
C.Factories made much more pollution in China.
D.The reasons of air pollution in London and Beijing are different

17、 In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join "environment clubs". In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clear.
Here are some things students often do.
No-garbage lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the least garbage and report them to the whole school!
No-car day. On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car--- not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to our air, so remember: Walk, jog, bike or run. Use your legs! It's lots of fun!
Turn off the water! Do you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty m3 of water an hour! In a year, that would fill a small river! In environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets. We love our environment. Let's work together to make it clean.

18、Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C.to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.
Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the left hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.
No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he / she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.
Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.
1.What did the scientists find after studying works of art made at different times in history?
A.The art began from 1,500 B.C.
B. The works of art ended in the 1950s.
C.Most people shown in the works of art are right-handed.
D.Most people shown in the works of art are left-handed.
2.How many people in the world are left-handed now?
A.About 10%-15%. B.About 50%.
C.About 40%. D.The passage doesn’t tell us.
3.What is the left hand for most people used to do?
A.It’s used to work with things.
B.It’s used to find or hold things.
C.It’s used to make a person’s eyes work together.
D.It’s the centre for thinking and doing problems.
4.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness.
B.Today children are not made to use their right hands only.
C.No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed.
D.Scientists think there must be some reason why people become left-handed.

19、Last week we discussed about if we should help the old who fell down. Some students said that they would help them, but they would learn to protect themselves as well, like leaving some eyewitnesses’ telephone numbers or taking some photos to record what happened.
Other students disagreed. They thought they would hold a serious attitude towards helping the old. In order not to cause a lot of trouble, staying away from the old is a good way to protect themselves.
As for me, I will help the old because I think helping others can make me feel happy. If everyone gives a hand to help others, our society will be full of love!
