But our research really shows that after socializing, the pack would decide whether to hunt. W: So how do they vote? M: Well, whether the dogs would actually go on a hunt is decided by the number of sneezes. The more the dogs sneeze, the more likely it is that the pack would look for a meal. W: So how did you do the research? Did you go to the wild to observe the wild dogs? M: Yes. We arrived in Botswana on March 10th and spent two weeks there. W: That must have been hard work. M: Yes, but I loved my time there. 听下面一段独白,回答以下小题。【此处可播放相关音频,请去附件查看】 18. What does the speaker usually buy for his friends? A. Something he likes. B. Something suitable for his friends. C. Something valuable. 19. Why does the man dislike giving gifts? A. It costs much time. B. The gifts are expensive. C. He doesn’t know what others like. 20. What would the man want as a birthday gift? A. A cake. B. A pair of earrings. C. A card. 【答案】18. A 19. C 20. C 【解析】 【原文】The holiday season is coming up and many cultures give gifts for different holidays. I’m not really good at choosing gifts for people, though. Because every time I go and buy something for someone, I want to buy something that I like and I would think that it would look good on them or something. But then my friends don’t really like the gift so much because it doesn’t suit them. For example, I bought a pair of earrings for a friend and then I realized that she doesn’t really like jewelries, so she never wore it. It’s kind of hard to know what they want. Actually, for that reason, I don’t like giving gifts at all. I think it’s because of my background, like studying economics. It’s just, to me, inefficient. You’re buying something, you don’t know if they really want it and they say, “Oh. It’s the thought that counts.” You waste time finding the gift and then you give them the gift and maybe they don’t use it. So I’m not a big fan of gift giving. Even for birthdays. And for me, if it were my birthday, I would have someone make a card for me. It would have more value than someone buying gifts for me anyway. 二、阅读理解 A Hong Kong and Macau are home to several well-known universities that offer diverse courses and programs to students. However, they found a solution by signing him up for a free circus school that aimed to keep him off the streets and out of trouble. It was there that Soares discovered his passion for performance art, including acrobatics, capoeira, acting, and clowning. Ballet never crossed his mind as a practical career option, as ballet wasn’t a noticeable dance form in Brazil at the time. At the age of 12, Soares began dancing but not in the traditional sense. His older brother was part of a hip-hop street dance group, and Soares started hanging out with them. He soon combined his circus school skills with hip-hop and capoeira to create a unique style that fascinated audiences in Rio. One day, the head of a Brazilian dance company saw Soares perform and arranged for him to selection for a dance school. He was awarded a scholarship that covered his tuition fees, and he began studying modern dance. However, it wasn’t long before everyone believed that Soares should switch to ballet. He was immediately put on a fast track, attending academic school in the mornings and ballet classes in the evenings. Soares’ parents were hesitant about their son pursuing ballet as a career. They were worried about his grades and whether ballet would provide him with a stable future. Soares shared their concerns and had never known anyone who pursued ballet professionally. Despite these reservations, something incredible happened within two years of Soares starting ballet training. He participated in the Paris International Dance Competition and won a silver medal. This achievement was even more impressive considering that most of his competitors had been studying ballet since childhood. After Paris, Soares joined the national ballet company in Brazil and began earning money from his dancing. Three years later, he went on to win the gold medal at the Moscow International Competition, previously won by legendary ballet dancers like Mikhail Baryshnikov. 24. Why was Soares sent to a circus school? A. To seek a chance to make a name. B. To stop him getting into trouble. C. To earn money to pay for tuition fees. D. To develop an interest in performance art. 25. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3? A. Modern dance became his favorite. B. Winning a scholarship was his main aim. C. He quickly displayed his talent for ballet. D. His academic classes had to give way to ballet classes. 26. What is the original attitude of Soares’ parents to his pursuing ballet? A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Unclear. 27. What’s the best title for the text? A. An Unconventional Journey to a Ballet Star B. The Financial Struggles of a Young Dancer C. In the last few years, pickleball has taken Europe and North America by storm. There’re more than 200 official community clubs registered with Pickleball Canada and an estimated one million Canadians playing each month. “Pickleball takes inspiration from tennis badminton and table tennis,” says Hope Tolley, managing director of recreational programs for USA Pickleball. It’s played on a badminton-sized court and with a net that’s almost as high as for tennis. Players use square paddles (球拍) and a small plastic ball with some holes that’s similar in size to a tennis ball, but much lighter. Since the lighter ball doesn’t bounce as much, it’s easier to get a rally (continuous back-and-forth play) going. Unlike tennis, you can score only when it’s your turn to serve. If your receiver fails to return the ball over the net, either from the serve or in a rally, you get the point. Be sure to hit with enough force or you’ll end up with a “falafel” — a shot that falls short of the net. Matches can be played in doubles or singles, and games are played to 11 points and must be won by a margin (差额) of two points. Lose with a score of 11 -0 and you’ve been “pickled”! Playing the game can improve your hand-eye coordination and increase your reaction time, because you can vary the intensity — going to all lengths from the beginning or taking a slower pace. “It can be played in non-traditional spaces like gyms and parking lots,” says Tolley. “Any smooth surface will work, as long as you have a net, a ball and a paddle.” Pickleball is easy to learn and is accessible to anyone. People who are really into the sport can join tournaments at various levels. It is the most inclusive (包容性的) game in the world. By 2030, pickleball is expected to have as many as 40 million players worldwide. 28. Why does the author begin the text with a question? A. To let people learn about pickleball. B. To introduce the topic of the text. C. To show the pickleball is popular. D. To express his interest in pickleball. 29. What do pickleball and tennis have in common? A. Having plastic balls with similar size. B. Having paddles with the same weight. C. Using round paddles and heavy balls. D. Originating in table tennis and badminton. 30. Which of the following is the advantage of pickleball? A. It’s easy to make your opponents be defeated. B. Players win the match by getting nine points. C. It’s good to improving players’ eyesight. D. Players can play it at most open places. 31. What can we infer about pickleball from the last paragraph? A. It’s been enjoyed mostly by young people. B. It’s easy to get a prize in a tournament. C. It’s fit for many different people. D. It’s urgent to hold matches of various levels. 【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. People who are really into the sport can join tournaments at various levels. It is the most inclusive game in the world.(匹克球很容易学,任何人都可以接触到。真正喜欢这项运动的人可以参加不同级别的比赛。它是世界上最具包容性的运动)”可推知,匹克球适合任何人,是最具包容性的运动,适合不同的人玩。故选C项。 D This past summer, hundreds of fish in Canada beat the heat in human- made plumes (一股) of cold water. The approach could help protect cold-water species as climate change warms rivers. Fish can become stressed or even die when the water gets too hot. In rivers, Atlantic salmon and other cold-water species sometimes escape the heat by flocking to cooler zones. Such chill sites may be found near groundwater springs or small rivers and streams flowing into larger waterways. “People have done a lot to preserve and add to these natural shelters,” said Kathryn Smith, a civil engineer in Canada at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her team works on the new river-chilling project. Until now, she says, “There hasn’t really been an emphasis if we can create cold-water habitat.” To test the idea, her team pumped (抽送) groundwater from a nearby well into the Wrights River in Nova Scotia. The groundwater was 9℃. This created an artificial plume of cool water. It was up to 20℃ cooler than the surrounding water. This plume attracted several hundred fish of different life stages and species. These included Atlantic salmon, most of which were very young. These small young fish hung out in the plume throughout the test. But when a heat wave raised river temperatures to about 30℃, older fish took shelter in the plume, too. The team also tried a second approach. They rerouted some water from the river into an underground trench (沟渠). Here, the water cooled a bit before flowing back into the river. This method cooled part of the river without needing a pump. The water temperature fell by only a few degrees Celsius this way. But even so, fish were spotted in the cooled flow throughout the summer. Though small, these early tests show a “proof of concept”. That means the approaches show promise but they aren’t yet ready for wide use. “More work lies ahead to decide the needed number of cooling site s to really help fish communities,” says Kathryn Smith. 32. What does the underlined word “chill” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Rough. B. Secret. C. Distant. D. Cold. 33. What is the purpose of Smith’s team’s project? A. To create cold- water species’ habitat. B. To learn more about Atlantic waters. C. To offer information about climate change. D. To protect the environment around Atlantic. 34. What does Smith’s team’s project tell us? A. The first approach is much more practical. B. Pumping cold water could help fish beat the heat. C. The artificial plume fails to attract big fish. D. The water temperature of the plume is higher. 35. What should Smith’s team figure out in the future? A. How to help fish avoid attack. B. When to make wide use of the approaches. C. How many cooling sites are needed. D. Why to make the approaches understandable. 【答案】32. D 33. A 34. B 35. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了加拿大科学家通过人工制造冷水流来保护冷水鱼种,以应对气候变化导致的河流升温问题。 【32题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“Fish can become stressed or even die when the water gets too hot. On a freezing cold Sunday in 2019, James, then a 16-year-old boy, headed to Aspen Mountain with his father to go skiing. They took a cable car to the top of the mountain and conquered the most challenging part of the long trail. Afterwards, they decided to follow different trails to go down the mountain respectively. That was when everything started to veer off course. In the late afternoon, after finishing the final run through the side trial, his father arrived at the parking lot. Anxiously, he had waited here for his son for several hours. However, James never showed up. It turned out that a fierce snowstorm had swept into the area as James was on his way down. Unable to see far and clearly, he turned off the path by accident and got lost. The dreadful snowstorm coupled with strong winds gained strength and enveloped everything, blocking his way back to the ski trails. Before long, James slid down the mountain slope on his skis and stopped at the bottom of the mountain in the valley. Thanks to the thick snow, James didn’t get hurt and the winds weren’t as strong in the valley as they were up on the mountain. Looking around, he saw nothing but the branches of trees and the pure white snow. James had no idea where he was. Worse still, the sun began to sink and he was getting colder by the minute. Most worrisome of all was that he didn’t have any food or water with him, let alone his mobile phone or other supplies. Standing alone in the wild and holding his large skis, cold and thirst, he couldn’t help thinking about the survival show Man vs. Wild that he used to watch. In the show, Bear Grylls was abandoned in a wild area like this and had to help himself out by using all sorts of survival skills. Yes! It was time to put the tips he had learned to use. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Without hesitation, James took action immediately. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Two days later, James saw several figures approaching his shelter. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible version: Without hesitation, James took action immediately. Well aware that he stood a better chance of being found if he stayed, James decided to stop moving around and seek shelter nearby from the freezing wind and snow. Using his large skis, he managed to built a snow cave and dug out a hole in the middle. It didnt take long before he finished gathering some fallen branches and put them inside like a blanket. While huddling in the cave, hunger and thirst crept over him again, making him dizzy and weak. He had no choice but to eat snow so his body wouldn’t lose too much water and energy. Two days later, James saw several figures approaching his shelter. He couldn’t help crying out “I’m here!” at the top of his lungs when he spotted it was his father and two other rescuers who were searching for him. Struggling to his feet, Jamed staggered towards them and threw himself into his father’s arms. To their great relief, James was eventually rescued and fortunately, in a good condition. Meanwhile, this narrow escape taught James the unpredictable force of nature and the significance of courage and intelligence in face of danger. 1】Using his large skis, he managed to built a snow cave and dug out a hole in the middle. B When Soares was a young boy growing up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, his family didn’t have the means to pay for extracurricular activities. Modern Dance: A Gateway to Ballet Excellece D. The Dilemma: Balancing School and Ballet for Success C Do you know what a pickleball is? In the last few years, pickleball has taken Europe and North America by storm. There’re more than 200 official community clubs registered with Pickleball Canada and an estimated one million Canadians playing each month. “Pickleball takes inspiration from tennis, badminton and table tennis,” says Hope Tolley, managing director of recreational programs for USA Pickleball. 七选五 Attending a concert is an activity appealing to many. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
