When you were at school, were you ever told to stop daydreaming and concentrate? It was easy for your mind to wander if you weren’t interested in what you were learning or if you had better things to think about. Staying focused can still be a challenge in adult life, but understanding how to do it, and knowing what is distracting you, can help.
Scientists have looked at what makes us distract and found a number of ways to help us stay in the zone. One of the most obvious things is eliminating noise. Research by Science Focus magazine found silence is best for concentration. It also found turning off notifications on your phone, or switching it off altogether, removes a major distraction and helps us focus on the task at hand.
Another possible cure for a short attention span (持续时间) is brain training. Psychologists are increasingly interested in our ability to get down to business and have looked at what we can change inside our head to make us concentrate. An article for BBC Future by Caroline Williams says that “Attention Researcher Nili Lavie of University College London has found that making a task more visually demanding takes up more processing power and leaves the brain nothing left to process distractions.” So, keeping your mind busy might be the answer.
There are more practical tips on keeping your mind focused. These include making a list or timetable of the tasks you have to do, finding a workspace where you’re not tempted to do other things, or chewing some gum! It’s possible the movement in your mouth occupies parts of the brain that might otherwise get distracted.
But according to Science Focus magazine, “if we were always so focused that we never got distracted, we’d miss potential changes, such as threats, in our environment. Distraction is vital for survival.”
43. What do the underlined words “stay in the zone” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Stay focused. B. Keep steady. C. Stay calm. D. Be careful.
44. How can we extend attention span?
A. To do visual task. B. To make the task easier.
C. To train processing distraction. D. To keep your mind busy.
45. What information does the last paragraph convey?
A. It’s hard to get rid of distraction. B. Distraction isn’t all bad.
C. Staying focused can avoid dangers. D. Being sensitive to changes is important.
46. Why does the author write this passage?
A. To discuss the phenomenon of daydreaming.
B. To show the harm of distraction.
C. To offer help in keeping concentrated.
D. To introduce the newest study results.

Joshua Nelson, 18, from Missouri, is graduating from St. Charles West High School this week and will be attending Southeast Missouri State in the fall. He had saved up money to pay for his tuition, but when he received the college's President's Scholarship, he decided to take his savings and donate it to other students in need.
“It comes from my family education and faith," Nelson said. "I've always lived by strong principles as far as being a cheerful giver and having an open hand when it comes to giving back so I feel like that really motivated me.”
SEMO's President's Scholarship is the school’s most celebrated, and is only awarded to five top students annually. Nelson said he sat down and outlined how a scholarship could work to help future students who need financial assistance for college. Originally the plan was to give away $ 1,000 the one time, but then he met up with his counselor (顾问), Yolanda Curry, to work out a game plan.
“I wasn't expecting it at all!” Curry said. "He told me he had a great idea and wanted to share it with me. I could tell he was really excited.
Nelson, in association with his high school, set up the Joshua Nelson Leaders In Action Scholarship fund. Each year, $1,000 will be awarded to a senior. The money will come from donations, of which there have been $16,000 so far — for a total of $17,435 at last count, according to the school. With the money already in the fund, there's enough to give out a scholarship each year for over a decade. The first scholarship was awarded on June 1 to Darrell Montalvo-Luna. As the first recipient, his scholarship was $2,000.
“Joshua has the heart of a servant leader. He leads by example and he's genuinely excited when good things happen for other people," Curry said. "He's an encouragement — he's good at building others up and does what he can to help encourage and motivate those around.

第六部分 书面表达(25分)

As I entered my freshman year of college, I happily moved into my dormitory (宿舍).
My roommate, Alex, welcomed me with a half-hearted smile. We exchanged pleasantries (寒暄), but something felt strange. Maybe it was the way Alex’s eyes looked around the room, sizing me up. Or perhaps it was just the tension (紧张局面) that hung in the air.
Alex and I were as different as storms and sunny days. I was an early riser, while Alex burned the midnight oil. I preferred a tidy space, while Alex kept things everywhere. Our disagreements grew from the dirty floor to late-night music.
One evening, after a long tiring day of classes, I returned to find my favorite cup broken on the kitchen floor. Alex stood there, looking guilty (内疚的). I felt very unhappy and started shouting at Alex. Words flew like arrows (箭), hurting each other’s feelings. Hate and anger filled the room. “I can’t take this anymore!” I shouted, and then hurried out of the dormitory, leaving Alex alone. Days turned into weeks, and Alex and I continued to be like strangers sharing the same space. I dealt with my studies and spent more time outside the dorm. Alex, on the other hand, seemed to stay in his own world. We almost had no communication with each other.
But then, one rainy afternoon, I found Alex sitting on his bed, looking out of the window. His eyes were red.
“Look, Alex began, “I know we’re different. But maybe we can find a middle ground.” Then he handed me a fresh cup of tea. “For the broken cup,” he said. I accepted it, touched by his friendliness. “And for the sleepless nights,” I agreed.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 We started small. Although we had different habits and different lifestyles, we were trying to work together. After Alex offered me a fresh cup of tea, I forgave him for his behavior, too. He was also trying to adjust his schedule, and we eventually found the middle ground, where two of us stayed out of each other’s way. Although our relationship was still relatively stiff, at least there was no conflict.
The real turning point came when Alex fell ill. It was a rainy night, and Alex suddenly had a fever. He was lying in bed in pain, coughing. Seeing him like this, I greeted him with great concern, “Are you okay? Alex, do you want me to go to the hospital with you?” He said that it didn’t matter, but later he was in a coma with a high fever. I was very worried, so I took him to the hospital and accompanied him to see the doctor. The next morning, he woke up and he looked at me. He said he was sorry because we had so many misunderstandings and conflicts before and hoped that we could get along well. He also thanked me for taking care of him last night. I replied that it didn’t matter. Later we became good friends. Through this incident, also learned the importance of tolerance and patience.

Lion population in Africa is estimated to have declined by 43% in the past 20 years. Many lions are killed to stop them from eating precious livestock, significantly impacting the lion population, the area’s biodiversity and tourism. Known as Lion Lights, Turere’s invention is based on a simple concept: visually reproducing the human presence that keeps lions away. With changing sequences (序列) of flashing lights which are fixed on fences, the lions can hot become comfortable with the patters and are discouraged from hunting livestock.
As word of Turere’s technology and its success spread, other community members began requesting the system for their properties, and now over 2, 000 homes in Kenya use Lion Lights. The system typically runs on solar energy but can also be coupled with wind power when the weather is cloudy or there is little sun.
In 2013, Turere founded the Lion Lights organization, which now cooperates with more than 50 young people in his native village. Turere’s commitment and resourcefulness have attracted international attention. His invention has been adopted in several other countries. “I want this story to inspire the young kids so that they too can do something. Anyone can make it. Anyone can change this world”, says Turere.

47. What did Nelson's initial donation come from?
A His scholarship. B. His savings.
C. His pocket money. D. His wages.
48. What does the underlined phrase "having an open hand" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Ambitious. B. Courageous.
C. Generous. D. Cautious.
49. How did Curry feel when hearing Nelson's idea?
A. Shocked. B. Confused.
C. Excited. D. Delighted.
50. What can be inferred about the Joshua Nelson Leaders In Action Scholarship fund?
