“It’s somewhat surreal,” Minnie Payne, a 90-year-old woman, said upon earning her master’s degree and becoming the oldest documented student to complete coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Prior to Payne, Elmer Kretzschmar, a 97-year-old, was the only individual at UNT to have received a degree at such an advanced age. Kretzschmar received his master’s in education in 2009, having completed his coursework 30 years earlier in the 1970s.
Born to workers, Payne grew up in a small South Carolina town where there was only one cinema, one drugstore, one gas station, and one grocery store. She graduated from high school in 1950 and then started to work to support her family. Over the course of her life, Payne held various jobs, including being a saleswoman, a temporary teacher, and a word processor.
However, she always had a desire to pursue university. Therefore, in her late 60s, she registered at Texas Woman’s University and obtained her bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in general studies in 2006. This led to her continuing academic journey at UNT.
During her time at UNT, she took many online courses, which eventually switched to in-person meetings. She wasn’t able to make the in-person classes and ended up facing a challenge. Fortunately, her former adviser suggested an alternative path, allowing her to earn her master’s degree by focusing on different things. She chose writing, which she has always had a love for.
Studying at UNT was challenging but Payne succeeded after spending many all-nighters and committing a significant amount of time to her studies. And she’s not done yet.
“I have achieved a significant milestone, but I feel that I still have plenty of rewarding moments ahead,” she said. “I intend to work until the very end because if I’m not pursuing, something worthwhile or helping others, I won’t be a happy camper.”
4. Why does the author mention Kretzschmar?
A. To highlight Payne’s uniqueness. B. To indicate Kretzschmar’s hard work.
C. To analyze the two students’ similarity. D. To introduce another excellent graduate.
5. What might the background information imply about young Payne?
A. She lacked university ambition then: B. She possessed superb teaching skills.
C. Jobs were easy to find in those days. D. Universities were inaccessible to her.
6. What caused Payne to be in a difficult situation while studying at UNT?
A. Failure to attend classes. B. Suffering from a disease.
C. Too many online courses. D. Choosing a different path.
7. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
A. Her deep-seated habit. B. Her intention of working hard.
C. Her hard-earned success. D. Her pursuit of a meaningful life.
C
When it comes to walking and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) risk, it’s not just how much you do it that helps, it’s also how fast you move, a new study has found. Brisk walking is associated with a nearly 40% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life, according to the study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Authors of the study reviewed 10 previous studies conducted between 1999 and 2022, which assessed links between walking speed and the development of type 2 diabetes among adults from the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan.
After a follow-up period of eight years on average, compared with easy or casual walking, those who walked an average or normal pace had a 15% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the researchers found. Walking at a “fairly brisk” pace meant a 24% lower risk than those who easily or casually walked. And “brisk walking” had the biggest benefit: a 39% reduction in risk.
Easy or casual walking was defined as less than 2 miles per hour. Average or normal pace was defined as 2 to 3 miles per hour. A “fairly brisk” pace was 3 to 4 miles per hour. And “brisk walking” was more than 4 miles per hour. Each kilometer increase in walking speed above brisk was associated with a 9% lower risk of developing the disease.
The research has gained approval from experts. Dr. Shimabukuro, a professor from Fukushima Medical University School of Medicine, agreed, furthermore adding that “increased exercise intensity due to faster walking speeds can result in a greater stimulus for physiological (生理的) functions and better health conditions.” He pointed out the importance of walking speed in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. He also suggested that we integrate brisk walking into our daily routine, which can be a simple yet effective strategy to prevent the attack of type 2 diabetes and promote better well-being.
8. What is key to reducing diabetes risk, according to the new study?
A. Type of activity. B. Frequency of walks.
C. Intensity of steps. D. Speed of development.
9. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to “brisk walking” in paragraph 1?
A. Walking slowly; B. Walking casually.
C. Walking rapidly. D. Walking regularly.
10. How much did diabetes risk drop for those walking 3-4 mph?
A. 15%. B. 24%. C. 39%. D. 9%.
11. How is the last paragraph mainly developed?
A. By applying figures. B. By quoting a patient.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By giving an example.

Smart watches have exploded in popularity in recent years and companies have been marketing these devices less as luxury products and more as essential medical devices necessities for anyone concerned about health. But do smart watches, which constantly monitor our vital signs, really lead us to better health? One recent study found that people trying to lose weight who used wearable technology to help actually lost less weight than those watch-free people. I also worry that smart watches can disturb our ability to know our own bodies.
“It’s an extension of our digital culture.” said coach Brad Stulberg. “Our culture promotes the limiting belief that measurable achievement is the dominant arbiter (仲裁者) of success, and these devices play right into that,” he told me. “It’s like you’re trying to win at a game instead of living your life. Instead of learning what your body feels like, you have a number.”
What he said was true of me. Sometimes I would wake up in the morning and check my smart watch to see how I slept-instead of just taking a moment to notice that I was still tired. I started to feel that my health wasn’t grounded in my own body anymore, or even in my mind. I didn’t know how my workout had gone until I opened the watch. I had been using the numbers it offered as a shortcut to feeling good enough in general.
Of course these watches can be useful: for health data, reminding you to move more. But if you’re thinking of a break from the numbers, I propose a challenge for the year ahead: try getting your feedback from your body instead of a device.
That’s what I did. At some point in the pandemic (疫病), I took off my watch. It left a white line on my wrist where it had spent years blocking the sun. Then I lost it and never bothered to find it.
12. What do companies prefer to advertise their smart watches as?
A. Must-have items. B. High-end products.
C. Life-saving devices. D. Cutting-edge monitors.
13. What does Brad Stulberg probably think of smart watches?
A. They can monitor our vital signs. B. They disconnect us from our bodies.
C. They represent the great digital culture. D. They can measure the success of a workout.
14. Why didn’t the author look for his smart watch?
A. Because he didn’t feel himself. B. Because the pandemic stopped him.
C. Because he wanted less reliance on it. D. Because there was no hope of finding it.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To advertise wearable smart watches. B. To report the findings of a recent study
C. To suggest a break from smart devices. D. To discuss limitations of digital culture.

Tyler always accompanied his Grandpa Charlie on a daily walk. Grandpa loved waving at people in cars. It brought people joy, and when they waved back, it brightened his day too.
One day, cold and windy, Grandpa wrapped a gray scarf (围巾) around his face and neck, put on his red hat and then stepped outside with Tyler as usual. He waved to the cars and people all waved back excitedly. They turned a corner and met an old man wearing a brown hat and a scarf. It was Henry, whose wife died recently. Frowning, Henry complained, “My doctor is making me take walks. I hate it. It’s fall, but it feels like the dead of winter.”
Suddenly, a gust of wind blew off both men’s hats. The hats flew toward the duck pond, and Henry’s went in. Tyler ran down the hill and grabbed Grandpa’s hat off the grass and fished Henry’s out of the water. He ran back up the hill and went to Henry, holding out his hat.
“It’s wet. Throw it away. I’ll buy a new hat.” Henry said, walking past them.
Tyler stared at his Grandpa’s red hat and came up with a plan. Tyler told Grandpa and got support. Tyler caught up with Henry and said Grandpa Charlie wanted him to have the red hat to keep warm. Staring at Tyler, Henry hesitated, but finally put it on and said thanks.
A car passed, and the people inside waved at Henry. Another car passed and honked. Henry looked confused. When the people in the third car waved at Henry, he waved back. Tyler smiled. His plan was working.
The next evening, Tyler took á walk with Grandpa as usual. It was still cold and windy, so Grandpa wore his old blue fishing hat and a scarf pulled up to his nose. He waved to three cars, but the people inside didn’t seem to notice him. Finally, a car passed, and a little girl yelled, “There’s the man in the red hat!” She pointed past Tyler and Grandpa.

Henry nodded vigorously, his face beaming. “It did. I used to think these walks were just a tiresome chore, but now I truly look forward to them every day. Thanks to you and Tyler. You have no idea how much this has changed my life.”
A week later, Henry went to Grandpa’s birthday party with a special gift. It was a beautiful new scarf, soft and warm, in Grandpa’s favorite color. “This is to thank you for the red hat and for making me enjoy walks again,” Henry said sincerely.
