I pressed my face against the school-bus window as we passed the giant movie screen rising over the trees — “Galaxy Drive-In”, one sign said, while another said sadly “CLOSED”. Across the wall, a vast parking lot with wild weeds growing everywhere could be seen clearly. “It’s wired, you know,” said the girl sitting two rows in front of me. “Sometimes movies play there all by themselves!”
I told my mom when I got home, retelling the girl’s words from the bus, “Someone’s been playing movies there!” “I doubt it, Jared,” Mom said. “It closed a couple of years ago.” But at night, I heard music and saw sparkling lights on the screen.
What on earth happened there?
To find out the truth, the next day, we went to explore the drive-in. It was like stepping into a forgotten world. As we continued our investigation, an old man, who we later knew as Nick, got out, and claimed he was the one playing old movies there. He recalled the drive-in’s golden days — 300 cars on a good night, but later, the industry changed and the need for a costly digital projector (放映机) forced him to close up.
He then invited us to stay and watch a movie. As the credit rolled, mom asked if he’d consider reopening with a new projector. Nick sighed he would if he could afford it.
That night, I had an idea. With Nick’s permission, I penned a letter to the local newspaper, asking the community for help to fund a digital projector. For a while, only a few hundred dollars came in. But then, Nick called with excitement. An organization that preserved old theaters had seen my letter and started an online fundraising.
A year later, the Galaxy was thriving again. Nick was overjoyed, and on a good night, we saw 300 cars fill the lot. And I? I got a free bucket of popcorn, a sweet reward for inspiring a community effort to bring the Galaxy Drive-In back to life.

C
Most people tend to think of cities as places lacking nature, but indeed cities aren’t just concrete (混凝土) jungles but are actually bustling with wildlife and nature. According to a study in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, urban landscapes are more than just human habitats; they also provide special opportunities for wildlife conservation.
“As a city kid growing up during the 1980s, I was fascinated with birds nesting on the top of my neighbour’s roof, which sparked my interest in birds and nature,” said Frank La Sorte, a researcher at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He believes that by observing our feathered friends in the city, we can see nature as an essential part of our well-being. Protecting nature is like giving ourselves a high-five.
To document the value of cities to birds, the research team from Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Auburn University, and Rutgers University, decided to put cities under the microscope. They mixed and matched bird sightings from citizen scientists of eBird program, endangered species lists, critical habitats, and 2020 U.S. census (普查) data. The team found that natural areas within cities could mean increased access to resources, warmer temperatures and shelters from natural disasters for birds. They also suggest that these green spaces should even allow for unique reappearing opportunities for species, which is not possible in their natural habitats.
But, they also caution that cities aren’t always the safest choice for wildlife, which means updating our views of cities as places where we can connect with nature is the first step to stop biodiversity loss. So, next time you’re taking a walk down the street, look up, and look around. You might just spot a nature scene that’s right beside you. Our urban jungles have thrived. Cities are the new frontier for wildlife conservation.
8. What is the updated idea about the relation between the city and nature?
A. Cities are friendly to wildlife. B. Cities hold no place for nature.
C. Cities have no impact on nature. D. Cities are rich in natural resources.
9. What inspired Frank La Sorte’s passion for birds?
A. His interest shared with his friends. B. His childhood spent in the countryside.
C. His sighting of birds in the neighborhood. D. His research in Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
10. How can cities contribute to the protection of birds?
A. By providing natural areas to shelter birds. B. By reducing the number of birds’ enemies.
C. By making cities less exposed to disasters. D. By introducing new species to the rural areas.
11. What does the author call on people to do in the last paragraph?
A. Have a healthy and balanced lifestyle. B. Be an observer of nature in cities.
C. Stop urbanization to keep biodiversity. D. Make frequent visits to the jungles.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. A 11. B

I recently watched The Martian, a 2015 American science fiction adventure film directed by Ridley Scott, and I must say, it left a lasting impression on me. The screenplay by Drew Goddard, based on Andy Weir’s novel, has gained widespread reputation for its scientific accuracy and engaging plot.
The film tells the story of the astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, who is mistakenly assumed dead and left behind on Mars during a mission. Facing extreme loneliness and survival challenges, Watney never gives up when facing the extreme environment on Mars and keeps trying to survive and find a way back to the Earth. He uses his knowledge and creativity to figure out ways to grow food and make water with limited resources on Mars.
The Martian is more than just a survival story. Its celebration of human perseverance and intelligence in the most abject situations is what touched me most. I was on the edge of my seat as Watney worked tirelessly alongside NASA teams and international scientists to find a way back home. The humor, thrilling plot, and unexpected fun kept me engaged throughout the film.
The movie also shows the collaborative efforts of NASA and other international space agencies to rescue Watney. It gives a more down-to-earth picture of how such organizations operate during a crisis, including the decision-making processes, the cooperation between different teams on Earth and in space. This is in contrast to other science fiction films that might simplify or overstate the role of such institutions.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The introduction to the actor. B. The plot of the movie.
C. The feedback from the audience. D. The impact of the story.
13. What does the underlined word “abject” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Hopeless. B. Exciting. C. Steady. D. Accessible.
14. What feature distinguishes The Martian from other science fiction films?
A. The plot twists of the movie. B. The significance of the novel.
C. The black humor of the character. D. The display of international cooperation.
15. What message does the text focus on?
A. Space travel is a risky business. B. Mars is a possible planet to live on.
C A sci-fi movie could become a reality. D. Human strength overcomes all hardships.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Our garage is a disaster!” Mom declared. “We need to bag up everything we’re not using. If it’s in good condition, we can donate it to people who can really use it.” As usual, our family would donate stuff to our community center every year.
“This year, you’re old enough to decide for yourselves now! You two can have the whole afternoon to go through what’s here,” said Mom. “Please donate only the things that kids in our community really use or truly need. Happy sorting!”
But happy was not the word I’d choose to describe our sorting. After Mom left, we both just stood there, staring at the boxes of old stuff for a long time.
Then my eyes fixed on a set of colorful Lego blocks. “No way. I don’t want to say goodbye to my blocks! Why don’t we give away your skipping rope?” Tex yelled loudly.
I shook my head firmly.
And that’s how it went for the next hour. Each decision felt so complicated that it was much easier to put nearly everything back to its position.
“Look!” Tex pointed. “A cool old toy car with only one wheel. Hard to fix. It’s the best choice for us to donate the broken ones like this.”
How clever he was! After all, neither of us was willing to part with our beloved possessions forever. We’d rather have them lie abandoned or unnoticed in our garage. We took immediate action and put all the broken toys, and board games with missing pieces in the donation pile. Now, sorting stuff out in this way did make us much happier. At this moment, Mom came back to see how it was going.
注意:
(1)词数应为120个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Why do you put so much useless stuff in the donation pile?” Mom pulled a long face.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mom was right and I put my favourite skipping rope into the donation plie first.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
“Why do you put so much useless stuff in the donation pile?” Mom pulled a long face. Tex and Tex changed nervous glances, not knowing how to respond. I said in a low voice, “We just…don’t want to part with the things we love.” Mom’s expression softened. “I understand how you feel, but the stuff we donate should be useful indeed. What if you were the receiver? How would you feel receiving the trash?” she said seriously. I lowered my head, pondering over her words.
Mom was right and I put my favorite skipping rope into the donation pile first. Seeing this, Tex followed me by adding in his Lego blocks. We realized that these toys could bring joy to other kids, just like they had brought happiness to us. With the new mindset, we found that giving away things wasn’t as hard as we had thought. Eyes shining with pride and relief, Mom joined us. With each item we added, a growing sense of warmth filled our hearts. And this time, I must admit, happy was the word I’d choose to describe our sorting.

I told my mom when I got home retelling the girl’s words from the bus, “Someone’s been playing movies there!” “I doubt it, Jared,” Mom said.

A. Start an online fundraising. B. Organize a community sale.
C. Ask for suggestions from school. D. Write a letter to local newspaper.
7. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. A Hard Time for an Old Man B. A Cinema that can Run on its Own

注意:
(1)词数应为120个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Why do you put so much useless stuff in the donation pile?” Mom pulled a long face.

Mom was right and I put my favourite skipping rope into the donation plie first.
