World’s Largest Active Volcano Erupts in Hawaii
Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world, has erupted for the first time in nearly 40 years, US authorities said, erupting lava and ash Monday, Nov. 28th, 2022 as emergency crews went on alert.
Flows of lava remained mostly contained within the peak’s huge caldera, but the eruption could pose a threat to nearby residents if conditions change, the United States Geological Survey reported at 11:45 pm local time Sunday about 15 minutes after the eruption inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Mauna Loa has been showing signs of erupting for years, according to the USGS, which said the ongoing eruption was visible from Kona, a town on the west coast of Hawaii’s main island about 72 kilometers from the volcano.
“Lava is still erupting from the peak and is overflowing from the caldera,” the USGS said on its website, referring to the basin at the top of a volcano. While it added there were “no threats to populated areas currently,” it urged area residents to review preparation procedures.
Hawaii authorities said no evacuation(撤离, 疏散) orders have been given, although the peak area and several roads in the region were closed, and two shelters have been opened.
Robin George Andrews, a scientist, said a larger threat exists if lava begins to pour out of so-called rift zones(裂谷带).
While there is no evidence yet of this occurring now on Mauna Loa, “the fact that it is a dangerous mountain that hasn’t erupted since 1984— the longest eruptive pause in its recorded history— is why we should all keep an eye on it,” Andrews said.
One of six active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands, Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since 1843, according to USGS.
The most recent eruption, in 1984, lasted 22 days and produced lava flows which reached to within about 7 kilometers of Hilo, a city to the northeast which is home to about 44, 000 people today.
4. Which of the following statements would USGS agree with?
A. The eruption time is correctly predicted.
B. The eruption is within expectation.
C. The eruption results have been under control.
D. The eruption will pose a threat to people living nearby.
5. What suggestion is given to residents in paragraph 4?
A. Leaving their houses as soon as possible.
B. Putting up more shelters in a short time.
C. Listening to evacuation orders often.
D. Making some preparations.
6. According to Robin George Andrews, what’s the potential danger?
A. No one knows how to judge the eruptive pause.
B. There are more people living near the rift zones.
C. There is a possibility that the lava pours out of rift zones.
D. All the six active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands will erupt.
7. Why does the author write this passage?
A. To give advice about protecting the environment.
B. To stress the importance of natural’s power.
C. To tell a piece of news to the readers.
D. To introduce the history of volcanos.

Sometimes there’s nothing better than the “rush” you feel when you’re going at high speeds. Or the wonder of going somewhere new and different, climbing a mountain or enjoying extreme sports like snowboarding. These are the adventures we “thrill seekers (寻找刺激的人)” live for. But sometimes we also need to know when to slow down.
Recently I went quad biking (摩托车越野), or ATV driving, on a track in the mountains. After a brief instructional exercise and what seemed like lots of waiting, we put on our helmets (头盔), started our engines and got onto the track. The sound of the engine was exciting. As I got more confident, I couldn’t help overtaking other drivers whenever I got the chance. Finally, the way forward opened up and I went ahead of the others. I turned toward a small hill and raced down. As I soon found out, this was a big mistake. My ATV turned over at full speed.
Luckily, I knew it was happening and pushed myself out of the way of the falling ATV. If I had not, I probably would have broken my leg beneath the weight of the ATV or even lost it. I might have even broken my neck. It ended up turning out fine, apart from some soreness (疼痛) in my chest for a week or so. This was a surprise for my friend. After seeing the accident, he said to me, “Dude, I thought you were dead.” Perhaps I could have very well died, if I hadn’t been lucky that day.
That event was one I’ll always remember for the adventure and the near-death experience. It’s good to be adventurous, but it’s still really important to be wise and careful too. So, go on adventures, but be smart while you’re on them!
8. What did the author do before starting his quad biking adventure?
A. He checked his ATV again and again.
B. He shared his experience with other drivers.
C He received some instruction and waited.
D. He made a personal survey of the track.
9. What happened when the author tried to race down a small hill?
A. He slowed down.
B. He hit his friend’s ATV.
C. He broke his neck and leg.
D. He lost control of his ATV.
10. How would you describe the author ?
A. Bold and careful. B. Humorous and smart.
C. Adventurous and lucky. D. Risky and wise.
11. What’s the main message the author wants to convey in the text?
A. Accidents are a natural part of adventures.
B. It is fun to live an adventurous life.
C. Never be afraid of failure in life.
D. Keep safety in mind while on an adventure.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11. D

I’ve spent much of my life dealing with written and spoken words. Now I’m a technologist making use of natural language processing for human good. Given that I work in artificial intelligence(AI), I’m realizing something dangerous happening. Machines are ruining the way we communicate.
AI voices are normalized and yet cold, no matter which accent(口音)you set your Siri or Amazon Alexa into. It’s difficult to normalize language to be inoffensive because sometimes we do make people feel uncomfortable or even make them annoyed. Yet this is exactly what we’re asking artificial intelligence to do for us on a billion-person scale. Once these rules are carried out by machines, they’re unavoidable and create much bigger issues.
We notice that there is an active desire to only include standardized language in AI-powered tools in an attempt to avoid including potentially hateful or offensive language. And these AI-powered tools are exactly what we use to complete our thoughts almost at any given time. They are everywhere—in our emails, word processors, and web pages. The machines are pushing us into a common tongue, and we accept it as a matter of convenience. But what’s the cost? We’re trading uniqueness and accuracy for convenience. We’re also handing the power of acceptable speech to machines not people.
In the real world, people don’t communicate like a Wikipedia(维基百科) article. We use tone(语气), humor and facial expressions. We can tell where people were born based on their accents and wording. Humans are truly unique, and our communication is constantly changing. So we should demand AI systems that promote individuality and uniqueness. We should demand to know how AI is developed and the data used to build it. Because we all deserve this.
12. What does the underlined word “inoffensive” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Hateful B. Valuable C. Harmless D. Beneficial
13. How can we promote AI voice?
A. AI voice should be legalized. B. AI voice should be modernized.
C. AI voice should be standardized. D. AI voice should be personalized.
14. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. AI systems should be improved.
B. AI systems deserve more support.
C. AI systems are becoming more human like.
D. AI systems are destroying our communication.
15. What’s the author’s tone in the passage?
A. Praising. B. Concerned. C. Humorous. D. Matter-of-fact.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B
【解析】

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The machines are pushing us into a common tongue, and we accept it as a matter of convenience. But what’s the cost? We’re trading uniqueness and accuracy for convenience. We’re also handing the power of acceptable speech to machines not people.(机器正在推动我们使用一种通用的语言,我们为了方便而接受它。但代价是什么呢?我们用独特性和准确性来换取便利性。)”可知,作者认为人工智能的声音应该更具有个性化、独特性。故选D。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“In the real world, people don’t communicate like a Wikipedia(维基百科) article. We use tone(语气), humor and facial expressions. We can tell where people were bon based on their accents and wording. Humans are truly unique, and our communication is constantly changing. So we should demand AI systems that promote individuality and uniqueness. We should demand to know how AI is developed and the data used to build it. Because we all deserve this.(在现实世界中,人们不会像维基百科上的文章那样交流。我们使用语调、幽默和面部表情。我们可以根据人们的口音和措辞来判断他们来自哪里。人类确实是独一无二的,我们的交流方式也在不断变化。因此,我们应该要求人工智能系统促进个性和独特性。我们应该要求知道人工智能是如何开发的,以及用于构建人工智能的数据。因为这是我们应得的。)”可知,最后一段讲述的是在现实生活中,人类的交流要丰富有个性得多,因此,人工智能系统应该有所改进。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Given that I work in artificial intelligence(AI), I’m realizing something dangerous happening. Machines are ruining the way we communicate.(鉴于我在人工智能(AI)领域工作,我意识到一些危险的事情正在发生。机器正在破坏我们的交流方式。)”、第三段“We’re trading uniqueness and accuracy for convenience.(我们用独特性和准确性来换取便利性。)”以及最后一段“So we should demand AI systems that promote individuality and uniqueness. We should demand to know how AI is developed and the data used to build it. Because we all deserve this.(因此,我们应该要求人工智能系统促进个性和独特性。我们应该要求知道人工智能是如何开发的,以及用于构建人工智能的数据。因为这是我们应得的。)”可知,作者在这篇文章中表露出对人工智能声音的担忧。故选B。

How to improve your writing skills
Writing, like any other skill, is something we can get better at with time and practice. Here are some strategies for developing your own writing skills.
•Review grammar and spelling basics
Grammar and spelling lie at the heart of good writing. Writing with proper grammar and spelling communicates (表达) your professionalism (专业水准) and attention to detail to your reader. ____16____
•Read what you want to write
Know what a great writing can look like. It can guide your own writing. If you’re trying to write a humorous short story, read humorous short stories. Writing a book review? Find a few and take note of their structure. ____17____
If you're working on a school assignment (作业), you can ask your teacher for examples of successful pieces from past students.
•Think about structure(结构)
____18____, but structure makes sure that the reader can understand the big ideas. In many cases, forming an outline (提纲) will help create a structure. An outline can clarify what you’re hoping to express in each section, enable you to identify the flow of your piece, and highlight parts that require further research or thought.
____19____
Whether you’re writing emails or essays, asking for feedback (反馈) is a great way to see how somebody besides yourself will feel about your text. Seek out a trusted friend, family member, coworker, or instructor. If you're a student, your school might also have a writing resource center you can reach out to.
____20____. Find writing courses online, at your local community college, or at independent writing workshops in your city.
A. Get feedback.
B. It also makes your writing easier to understand.
C. Grammar and spelling keep your writing clear and readable.
D. One of the best ways to improve your own writing is to read a lot.

At 19, I became an attendant at the Stanley Park Children’s Zoo. The children’s zoo was ahead of its time. Holes were used instead of cages, and zoo attendants worked hard to make each habitat different and exciting for the animals that lived there.
The harbor seal pups (幼崽) in our care were kept in the back building, away from visitors. Twice a day, we’d take them to the man-made pond in the contact area for a swim. The pond was at the bottom of a waterfall of fresh, cold water.
One day, as I was in the deep, icy water with two seal pups, some people gathered to watch. The pups swam close to me, surfacing occasionally to catch a breath and look around. I noticed a boy, about 10 years old, excitedly pointing at one and calling to his mother to come and see.
Suddenly, the boy yelled, “Where is the other seal?” While one of the seals was scratching my leg, my eyes searched the pond for the other, Spica. The water was clear, as well as cold, and it was soon obvious Spica wasn’t where he should be. I was shocked as I realized he had swum under a rock formation, which was there to hide the drain (排水管). That area was too narrow for Spica to turn around in.
“Oh no!” yelled the boy. “The little seal is under the rocks and can’t get out. He’s going to drown!” Everyone in the zoo came to the edge of the pond to watch the scene. I was frightened and asked another attendant to take the remaining pup to safety. I dove under to check the hole and found Spica trying to get through.

As everyone was silent, Spica raised his head, making a soft, low sound.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Just then, Ken, who worked at the main zoo, arrived. Calm and experienced, he immediately sized up the situation since he had dealt with many emergencies. Ken instructed me to fetch a net with a long handle. He then dived into the water, slowly approaching the area where Spica was trapped. Carefully, he inserted the net into the narrow space, trying to attract Spica into it. The seal pup was panicked, twisting about and making it difficult. But Ken didn’t rush, his steady hands and comforting words attempting to calm the distressed animal.
As everyone was silent, Spica raised his head, making a soft, low sound. It was a painful cry that seemed to reach our hearts. Ken persisted, adjusting the position of the net. Finally, Spica, exhausted and desperate, swam into the net. Ken lifted it out of the water gently, the crowd erupting with cheers. I thanked Ken sincerely as he carried Spica to the shore, which was shaken but unharmed, swimming freely. The boy who had cried out earlier was beaming with relief, and the whole zoo seemed to breathe a collective sigh of happiness.

D. All the six active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands will erupt.
7. Why does the author write this passage?

Sometimes there’s nothing better than the “rush” you feel when you’re going at high speeds. Or the wonder of going somewhere new and different, climbing a mountain or enjoying extreme sports like snowboarding. These are the adventures we “thrill seekers (寻找刺激的人)” live for. But sometimes we also need to know when to slow down.
Recently, I went quad biking (摩托车越野), or ATV driving, on a track in the mountains.
C. He received some instruction and waited.
D. He made a personal survey of the track.
9. What happened when the author tried to race down a small hill?
A. He slowed down.
B. He hit his friend’s ATV.
C He broke his neck and leg.
