He had an ancestor, John webster, who was the state governor in the Mid 16 hundreds. He once took a job as a teacher to earn money to support his family. Later, he was able to study law using a judge's books and became a lawyer. But what he really wanted to do was to teach others. He had observed that people in America spoke many languages and they could not understand each other. They would get into fights because of these misunderstandings. He thought there needed to be one language, a mother tongue, so that people could work together and be united. He made a dictionary for the people. When the dictionary was finished, it had 70,000 English words in it. He called it an American dictionary of the English language. It has sold more copies than any English book except the Bible. Later, the Merriam family bought the right to publish the dictionary and it became known as the Merriam webster dictionary. Webster, in addition to creating a dictionary, helped to create all American nation. A Details about volunteers to clean up the Parramatta River About This Opportunity Working along the Parramatta River, we will spend the day removing litter and improving the environment for the river’s inhabitants 根据文章第一段“After the clean-up, we will spend some time collecting data about the litter collected. (清理结束后,我们将花一些时间收集有关收集到的垃圾的数据。)”可知,每次清理后,志愿者会收集有关收集到的垃圾的数据。故选D。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。根据A Few Things to Remember部分“You are required to make your own way to and from the worksite. (你需要自己前往工作地点和返回。)”可知,志愿者需要自己前往工作地点。故选D。 【23题详解】 细节理解题。根据A Few Things to Remember部分“We can provide you with a certificate of appreciation for coming along and helping out; this looks great on a resume. (我们可以为你提供一份感谢证书,以感谢你前来帮忙;这在简历上看起来很不错。)”可知,志愿者能从他们的志愿服务中得到一份感谢证书。故选C。 B As a teen, Mara Clawson loved making art — specifically drawing with pastels (蜡笔). So at 14, she reached out to Art Enables, a studio and gallery in Washington, D. C., where she really wanted to make that art. But Art Enables requires its members to be at least 21 years old. That didn’t hold her back. During the seven-year wait, Clawson stayed focused. She and her parents kept in close touch with the gallery, and she sent work to its exhibits as a special guest. After about 2,500 days, Clawson finally joined the ranks. Art Enables is a lot like other art studios — it is quiet enough to hear a paintbrush clink (碰得叮当响) the sides of a water glass and, of course, it’s full of art. Those things attracted Clawson, but she was also drawn to the artists who make up the studio-artists, like her, who have a disability of some kind. “Our mission is to help artists build a career in the arts,” says the director Tony Brunswick. “Art Enables is not an art therapy (治疗) program; it’s not an art education program. We’re a professional studio.” Artists regularly exhibit work in the galleries, and visitors can buy that art. This is a business — artists earn money from the sales and work to build their personal brands. Employment rates for people with disabilities can be pretty low. In Washington, D. C., about 33 percent of working-age people with disabilities are employed, compared with about 79 percent of working-age people overall, according to a 2015 survey. “Employers still don’t want to hire people with disabilities,” says Morris, who worked in the field of human services. From his point of view, any exposure that highlights the talents of the long-marginalized (长期边缘化的) community is good exposure. When passers-by walk into Art Enables and fall in love with a hand-painted birdhouse or a sketch (素描) before learning that it was made by someone with a disability, that piece of art has the opportunity to broaden their perspective. In other words, it allows art and artists to do what they do best. 24. How did Clawson react to Art Enables’s rejection? A. She stopped contacting the studio. B. She devoted herself to applying for membership. C. She gave up her passion for pastel drawing. D. She sent her works to other studios. 25. What do we know about Art Enables? A. It is run for educational purposes. B. It is an art therapy program. C. It welcomes artists of all ages. D. It works with disabled artists. 26. What might Morris think of Art Enables? A. It creates opportunities for disabled people to demonstrate their talents. B. It is unable to change employers’ attitudes toward disabled people. C. It exposes disabled people to public criticism. D. It should serve as a nonprofit. 27. What does the author say about art in the last paragraph? A. Art has the power to change the world. B. Art can motivate artists to try their best. C. Art can help widen people’s viewpoints. D. Art is a bridge between artists and society. B 25. D 26. A 27. 根据第一段中的“That didn’t hold her back. During the seven-year wait, Clawson stayed focused. She and her parents kept in close touch with the gallery, and she sent work to its exhibits as a special guest. After about 2,500 days, Clawson finally joined the ranks.(这并没有阻挡她。在七年的等待期间,Clawson始终保持专注。她和她的父母与画廊保持密切联系,并且她以特别嘉宾的身份向其展览提交作品。大约2500天后,Clawson终于加入了这个行列)”可知,Clawson并没有因为年龄限制而放弃她的目标,而是持续与画廊保持联系,并作为特别嘉宾提交作品参展。由此可知,她致力于申请成为会员。故选B项。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Those things attracted Clawson, but she was also drawn to the artists who make up the studio-artists, like her, who have a disability of some kind.(这些特点吸引了Clawson,但她也被工作室的艺术家们所吸引——那些和她一样,有着某种残疾的艺术家们。)”以及第三段中的““Our mission is to help artists build a career in the arts,” says the director Tony Brunswick. “Art Enables is not an art therapy (治疗) program; it’s not an art education program. 根据倒数第二段中的““Employers still don’t want to hire people with disabilities,” says Morris, who worked in the field of human services. From his point of view, any exposure that highlights the talents of the long-marginalized (长期边缘化的) community is good exposure.( “雇主们仍然不愿意雇用有残疾的人,”曾在人类服务领域工作的Morris说。从他的角度来看,任何能够突出长期被边缘化群体才能的曝光都是好的曝光)”可知,Morris认为任何能够突出长期被边缘化社区(指残障人士)才能的曝光都是好的,因此他可能认为Art Enables为残障人士提供了展示才华的机会。故选A项。 根据尾段“When passers-by walk into Art Enables and fall in love with a hand-painted birdhouse or a sketch (素描) before learning that it was made by someone with a disability, that piece of art has the opportunity to broaden their perspective. In other words, it allows art and artists to do what they do best.(当路人走进Art Enables,爱上一个手绘的鸟屋或是一幅素描,在得知这些作品是由有残疾的人创作之前,这件艺术品有机会拓宽他们的视野。换句话说,这使得艺术和艺术家能够发挥他们最擅长的作用)”可知,艺术在人们不知道创作者是残障人士的情况下吸引他们,进而拓宽人们的视野和改变他们对残障艺术家的看法,由此可知,艺术有能力拓宽人们的视野。故选C项。 C A smile is the key to a thousand doors, but deploying it in every situation without mastery of its use is dangerous, says a new social science study. Scientists at Queen’s University Belfast found that subtle(细微的)differences in the way in which a person smiled had not-so-subtle impacts on the opinions which the test participants had about the smiler. While playing a set of economic games, such as those that require trust to create value for both players, or which can gain more value for a single person willing to cheat, the subject individual first displayed uncooperative behavior and thus triggered(导致)a loss of trust or confidence in their partner. It was then that, depending on the characteristics of the smile made at the game’s end by the subject, the participants changed their expectations of how the smiler would behave during the next game. Three different smiles were used. After untrustworthy or uncooperative behavior, a reward smile — a big smile like a kid who got the ice cream he was begging for, and a dominance smile, a sign of superiority, won very little trust, expectations of change in behavior, and positivity. However, an “affiliation smile,” which seems to have a sign of regret, like the smile someone might make after comforting a dear friend, created a desire to repair the broken relationship and to trust the person who had just done something unfair. “Think about movie villains(反派), for example in James Bond films,” said Dr. Magdalena Rychlowska, who led the research. “They often smile happily when something bad has happened or is about to happen. This context makes these otherwise happy and normal smiles feel threatening and unpleasant.” She adds, “The findings of this study show the power of subtle facial expressions and the positive consequences that an affiliation smile can have in difficult situations. It also highlights the importance of social context — a happy smile that could be read as a signal of trustworthiness in one setting can, in another setting, be seen as evidence of bad intentions.” 28. What does the underlined word “deploying” in the first paragraph mean? A. Applying. B. Noticing. C. Hiding. D. Understanding. 29. Which smile could most probably repair relationships damaged by mistrust? A. A reward smile. B. A dominance smile. C. An affiliation smile. D. An intentional smile. 30. What does Dr. Magdalena Rychlowska think of happy smiles? A. They stand out in James Bond movies. B. Their meanings depend on the context. C. There are various ways to show them. D. They represent a potential risk. 31. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To reveal the secret behind smiles. B. To persuade people to smile often. C. To introduce three different smiles. D. To call people’s attention to affiliation smiles. A 29. C 30. B 31. 故选A。 根据第四段最后一句“However, an ‘affiliation smile,’ which seems to have a sign of regret, like the smile someone might make after comforting a dear friend, created a desire to repair the broken relationship and to trust the person who had just done something unfair.(然而,一种‘归属性的微笑’,似乎有后悔的迹象,就像有人在安慰亲爱的朋友后可能会露出的微笑,它会产生一种修复破裂关系的愿望,并相信那个刚刚做了不公平之事的人)”可知,归属性的微笑最有可能修复因不信任而受损的关系。 根据最后一段“It also highlights the importance of social context — a happy smile that could be read as a signal of trustworthiness in one setting can, in another setting, be seen as evidence of bad intentions.(它还强调了社会环境的重要性——在一个环境中,快乐的微笑可以被解读为值得信赖的信号,但在另一个环境中,却可能被视为恶意的证据)”可知,Magdalena Rychlowska博士认为快乐的微笑的含义取决于环境。 A。 D Some tiny birds called titmice(山雀)take risks to gather some hair for their nests(巢穴). They land on their sleepy natural enemies’ backs. They even steal hair directly from people’s heads. The behavior has rarely been described by scientists. But dozens of YouTube videos catch birds in the act, researchers report July 27 in Ecology Titmice — and one chickadee — have been recorded on video pulling hair from dogs, cats, and even humans. “Bird watchers and people with dogs knew much more about this behavior than scientists themselves” says Mark Hauber, an animal behaviorist at the University of Illinois. Witnessing(目击)an act of hair thievery in the wild inspired Henry Pollock to dig deeper. Pollock is an ecologist, also at the University of Illinos. In March 2020, Pollock and his colleagues were counting birds in an Illinois state park. During the count, they saw something unusual: a titmouse stealing fur from a sleeping raccoon(浣熊). “I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that,’” he says. Pollock, Hauber and their colleagues wondered if other scientists had seen similar behavior. The team found only 11 scientific descriptions of birds stealing hair from live mammals(哺乳动物). Most accounts involved titmice in North America. At least five other bird species also get in on the action. Researchers have seen an American crow harvest hair from a cow. In Australia three honey eater bird species steal fur from koalas. Scientists generally assume that birds gather hair for their nests in low-risk ways. It was a surprise to learn some birds take bigger risks for hair. “Taking hairs from raccoons, which are common skilled nest predators(捕食者), suggests that it’s obviously worth the risk to get that hair,” Pollock says. Hair-harvesting bird species tend to live in colder climates. So those birds probably need hair to keep warm, the team says. Some birds might also fill their nests with mammal hair to confuse would-be predators. 32. What do we know about the birds’ behavior from paragraph 2? A. It has annoyed bird watchers. B. It is little known to scientists. C. It has excited dog owners’ interest. D. It is a very hot topic for YouTubers. 33. How did Henry Pollock most probably feel when seeing what a titmouse did? A. He was concerned about the bird’s safety. B. He considered it put people at risk. C. He believed it happened often. D. He was greatly surprised. 34. What does the underlined part “get in on” in paragraph 4 most probably mean? A. Give up. B. Prepare for. C. Take part in. D. Survive from. 35. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. A further explanation of the bird’s behavior. B. Supporting evidence for the research results. C. Potential dangers of hair-harvesting birds. D. Reasonable doubts about the bird’s behavior. B 33. D 34. C 35. 根据第三段“During the count, they saw something unusual: a titmouse stealing fur from a sleeping raccoon. ‘I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that,’ he says.(在计数过程中,他们看到了一件不寻常的事情:一只山雀从一只睡着的浣熊身上偷毛。‘哇哦,我从来没有见过这样的事情,’他说。)”可知,当看到山雀的行为时,Henry Pollock感到非常惊讶。故选D。 【34题详解】 词句猜测题。根据上文“The team found only 11 scientific descriptions of birds stealing hair from live mammals (哺乳动物). Most accounts involved titmice in North America.(研究小组仅发现了11篇关于鸟类从活体哺乳动物身上偷取毛发的科学描述。大多数记录都涉及北美的山雀)”和下文“Researchers have seen an American crow harvest hair from a cow. In Australia three honey eater bird species steal fur from koalas.(研究人员曾目睹一只美国乌鸦从牛身上拔毛。在澳大利亚,有三种嗜蜜鸟会从考拉身上偷取毛发)”可知,至少有另外五种鸟类也参与了这种行为。由此可知,get in on意为“参与”。 根据最后一段“Hair-harvesting bird species tend to live in colder climates. So those birds probably need hair to keep warm, the team says. Some birds might also fill their nests with mammal hair to confuse would-be predators.(收集毛发的鸟类往往生活在气候较冷的地方。所以这些鸟可能需要毛发来保暖,研究小组说。一些鸟类可能还会在巢穴中填满哺乳动物的毛发,以迷惑潜在的捕食者)”可知,最后一段主要对鸟类收集毛发的行为进行了进一步的解释。故选A。 How to Make Sure You Enjoy Your Trip A trip is a planned journey that one arranges in advance and whose main purpose is to search for adventure and to create a memorable moment. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Every Friday I went to Aunt Evie’s because Friday was card night for my grandparents and their brothers and sisters. They would gather around in the dining room, eating pie and laughing, while I looked at the dollhouse for hours. Once, I asked Aunt Evie where she got the little miniatures so that I could buy some, too, one day. But Aunt Evie said that most of the miniatures were handcrafted (手工制作的) and couldn’t be replaced. One such item was a small teddy bear an inch high. I was amazed by how beautifully it was sewn (缝) together. I wanted the bear badly. “If I take it, Aunt Evie wouldn’t even notice it’s missing. But I could hold it in my hand and admire it all day long,” I thought to myself. That Friday night, it took me a couple of hours to get the courage to take the bear and put it in my pocket. I had to wait until nobody was watching me. Once the bear was in my pocket, I couldn’t wait to get home and look at it. I would have to hide it somewhere at home, so that no one would know I had it. That night, I couldn’t sleep. “What an awful person I am,” I thought. “I’m a thief (小偷), and I stole from my family.” When I woke up the next morning, I had a fever. I stayed in bed to punish myself for what I did. I couldn’t tell my grandmother or Aunt Evie. I was too embarrassed about what I did. My hands began shaking and my stomach started aching badly. I started hating the bear. I hated myself, too, and knew that if I didn’t do something quickly, I wouldn’t be released from the bad feelings I was having. I felt worse and worse, so I decided to tell my grandmother. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I tried hard to hold back my tears when I rang Aunt Evie’s doorbell. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I felt worse and worse, so I decided to tell my grandmother. “I feel awful, Granny. I can’t live with myself and what I’ve done,” I said. “You have to take the bear back and tell Aunt Evie what you did,” she said. I started to panic. Facing Aunt Evie and expecting her to believe that her niece was a thief was too much to ask. Aunt Evie will never forgive me, I thought. “You’re going to stand up and take the consequences for what you did, whether you like it or not,” my grandmother said. I tried hard to hold back my tears when I rang Aunt Evie’s doorbell. She opened the door as if she already knew what I was going to say. I showed her the little bear and told her I was sorry. Quietly, Aunt Evie picked up a box by the door and handed it to me. Inside was a miniature tea set. “I admire your courage in coming here and returning the bear. You are my favorite niece even more now,” Aunt Evie said. 词汇激活 行为类 告知:tell/inform 期望:expect/anticipate 展示:show/display 钦佩:admire/think highly of 情绪类 极坏:awful/terrible 惊慌失措:panic/lose one’s head 【点睛】[高分句型1]Facing Aunt Evie and expecting her to believe that her niece was a thief was too much to ask.(运用了动名词短语作主语及that引导宾语从句) [高分句型2]“You’re going to stand up and take the consequences for what you did, whether you like it or not,” my grandmother said.(运用了what引导宾语从句及whether…or… What are the speakers probably talking about? C A smile is the key to a thousand doors, but deploying it in every situation without mastery of its use is dangerous, says a new social science study. D Some tiny birds called titmice(山雀)take risks to gather some hair for their nests(巢穴). A A further explanation of the bird’s behavior. B. Supporting evidence for the research results. C. Potential dangers of hair-harvesting birds. D. Reasonable doubts about the bird’s behavior. How to Make Sure You Enjoy Your Trip A trip is a planned journey that one arranges in advance and whose main purpose is to search for adventure and to create a memorable moment. I felt worse and worse so I decided to tell my grandmother. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I tried hard to hold back my tears when I rang Aunt Evie’s doorbell. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
