He is one of this country’s living scientists in sleep studies and the freethinking lecturer of the year. Russell is a man who thinks deeply and sleeps deeply, and he wants us to stop seeing sleep as an inconvenience, something to be gotten through, a man who wants us to take sleep as the most important behavioral experience that we have. Russell has been doing this research for decades at the University of Virginia, Chicago and now at Oxford. But his work also takes him beyond the lab. Through videos and popular books, Russell has become a public speaker for sleep. And tonight’s lecture is about his research. Please welcome Russell Foster.

Once upon a time, there was an unlucky man. His home was very poor — a small and empty house, where mice made their nests and spiders made their webs.
People tried to avoid coming into his house — why should they go into those poor ruins? And the poor man thought that poverty is the reason for his bad luck.
Once, the poor man met a wizard (巫师) and complained to him about his poverty and unhappy life. The wizard felt sorry for the poor man and gave him a beautiful vase. And said, “This is a magical vase that will save you from poverty.”
The poor man took the vase and wanted to sell it for wine at first, as usual, after all, why would he need such a beautiful thing? But then he started admiring the vase and wouldn’t take it to the market. He brought it home, put it on the table and started admiring it again.
“It’s not right for such a beautiful thing to be empty,” the poor man thought. So he picked some wild flowers and put them into the vase.
It became even more beautiful.
“Not good,” the poor man thought again, “that such a beautiful thing stands next to a spider web.”
So the poor man started cleaning his house from spider webs, sweeping out mice, cleaning the dust, washing the floor and walls, whitening the ceiling.
And it became clear that his house wasn’t poor, but rather warm and comfortable. And the man wasn’t a poor man anymore, but a hard-working host, who had no time for the thoughts about bad luck.

Students usually go to school from Monday to Friday. But some schools in the USA are getting shorter weeks. Classes go for four days instead of five.
There are some reasons for this change. School leaders hope longer weekends may give teachers a good rest. And schools could spend less money on buses or electricity.
But is a four-day school week better for students and parents?
Some experts did research to find out the effects. They talked to people about the change. “Some people really like it,” said Christopher Doss, an expert. “Parents get to spend more time with their kids. And they think everyone can be less stressed and sleep more.”
The experts didn’t just want opinions though. They looked at the data (数据). “In fact, we could not find a lot of data to support the parents,” Doss said. Parents did spend more time with their kids. But the study didn’t find that they were less stressed.
The experts also discovered a problem. “We found that kids probably learned a little less every year,” Doss said. “That can add up to a lot less.” So the question is while the change is welcomed, is it worth having kids learn less?
Many students have their own ideas about the change. “I think weeks should be four days,” Chris said. “Every Sunday, I wish for just one more day to prepare for school.” Maya is more in the middle. “I don’t mind a four-day week, but I still like school,” she said. “The bad side is that Tuesday will feel like Monday!”
Are you ready for a four-day week? Or are you OK with five?
28. What are the reasons that some schools in the USA are getting shorter weeks?
①To save money.
②To give teachers a good rest.
③To make parents less stressed.
④To help kids get better prepared for school.
A. ②③ B. ①② C. ③④ D. ②④
29. What kind of data did the experts fail to find?
A. Those to support students’ ideas.
B. Those to support school leaders’ ideas.
C. Those to show parents were less stressed.
D. Those to show parents spent more time with their children.
30. What problem did the experts find about the four-day school week?
A. Students learned less.
B. Students had busier weekends.
C. Parents had less time to care for their kids.
D. Parents had to learn to teach their kids by themselves.
31. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Reasons for going to school B. How to reduce students’ burden
C. How to make students love study D. Are you ready for classes only with four days
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A 31. D

With the rise of technology, we’re experiencing an important change in our lives. But what exactly are the differences between a modern lifestyle and a traditional lifestyle?
A traditional lifestyle is often defined by cultural and social standards passed down through generations (几代人). However, the modern lifestyle is characterized by a more personal approach, where personal freedom is often more important than traditional standards.
But the differences between the two go much deeper than just cultural standards. The way we live our daily lives has also changed greatly. Modern lifestyles are often characterized by technology-driven convenience. On the other hand, traditional lifestyles favor (青睐) a more simple approach to daily living.
So what does it mean to live a modern lifestyle, and how does it differ from a traditional one? The development of communication methods is a heated topic that gives us insights into the rich history of mankind. Letters were once the primary means of communicating across great distances, and they held a special place in people’s hearts, sharing news of loved ones. Writing a letter was so amazing as it required thoughtful consideration.
As time passed and technology advanced, communication methods changed, and today we live in an age controlled by instant (即时的) messaging and social media. While these tools offer speed and convenience, they have damaged the depth of our relationships.
In our modern lifestyle, we’re connected in a real-time way, but sometimes we feel more disconnected than ever before. The instant messages can leave us feeling anxious, while the art of face-to-face conversation is in danger of being lost.
But it’s not all bad news. Technology has brought us closer in many ways, providing new forms of communication. Video calls, for example, have made it possible to meet with loved ones from anywhere in the world, creating a sense of community that was once impossible.
32. What does the underlined word “defined” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A Doubted. B. Inspired. C. Shaped. D. Contacted.
33. What does the author think of letters?
A. They have been out of date. B. They meant a lot to loved ones.
C. They make us disconnected. D. They changed the way we read.
34. What does the author want to say by mentioning instant messaging?
A. It is a must to build a sense of community.
B. Advances in technology make the old suffer.
C. We should live up to parents’ expectations.
D. People are becoming cold and indifferent.
35. In which part of a magazine may you read this text?
A. Lifestyle. B. Business. C. Health. D. Travel.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. A
【解析】

【33题详解】

Writing a letter was so amazing as it required thoughtful consideration.(信件曾经是远距离交流的主要方式,在人们的心中占有特殊的地位,分享亲人的消息。写一封信是如此令人惊奇,因为它需要深思熟虑)”可知,作者认为信件在人们的心中占有特殊的地位,曾经对我们挚爱的亲人意义非凡。故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Letters were once the primary means of communicating across great distances, and they held a special place in people’s hearts, sharing news of loved ones. While these tools offer speed and convenience, they have damaged the depth of our relationships.(随着时间的推移和技术的进步,沟通方式发生了变化,今天我们生活在一个由即时通讯和社交媒体控制的时代。虽然这些工具提供了速度和便利,但它们破坏了我们关系的深度)”可知,写信对挚爱的人来说意义非凡,推测作者提及即时通信是为了说明人际关系越发疏远。故选D。

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations (做演讲). Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”
Tears sh one in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon (丝带) winner. It wasn’t easy at first — not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha looked at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought.

The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha looked at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She imagined the scene where her momma tried her best to overcome her fears and pluck up her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Perceiving Neisha’s anxiety, Momma reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a disarming smile. Restored and determined, she gritted her teeth to find her courage. In front of the mirror parked Neisha continuously practicing from pronunciation to tone, even gesture. “Try harder,” she perked herself up when drowsiness fell upon her.
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Shy, she customarily lowered her head and averted her gaze, numb there for seconds. Shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, summoned up her courage, “Dear fellow students, ...” Niesha cast a glance at Mr. Roberts standing in the corner smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Niesha’s face. She knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.
【解析】

And it became clear that his house wasn’t poor but rather warm and comfortable.

“Some people really like it” said Christopher Doss, an expert.

A. Lifestyle. B. Business. C. Health. D. Travel.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
