Travel photographer Peter Yan left behind a successful career at Apple to pursue his work as
a visual storyteller.In a few years,the Chinese-born Australian photographer has built an
impressive following on social media, where over 150,000 people follow his inspiring imagery.
One particular photo, taken on a trip to Yangshuo,China, has caused the Internet to sit up and
take notice. In the photograph,a cormorant (fisherman stands on his simple wooden raft
()ready to work with his two birds next to him.
When Peter arrived at Yangshuo,he was immediately entranced by the practice of cormorant
fishing. This technique is typically practiced in rivers, with fishermen training their birds to catch
fish in their throat and bring them back to the boat. The method was first described in a 636 CE
text about the history of the Sui Dynasty and was a prosperous()industry.Now,cormorant
fishing is typically practiced for tourism purposes, which makes Yan's photograph all the more
special.Through this viral photograph,he's been able to bring awareness back to a tradition that is
fading.At the same time,given Yangshuo's incredible landscape,he's exposed his followers to a
new side of China that they may not otherwise have discovered.
Three years ago, photography was just a hobby for Yan.Since he went on overseas vacations,
he started to post on social media regularly. After a year, his account took off and gained lots of
followers.He loved his full-time job,but as his photography"work"became more serious,he had
to make a tough decision. In the end,he chose travel photography full-time,for fear of future
regret if he didn't try it sooner.
Yan looks forward to the countless adventures that lie ahead, knowing there are still many
hidden treasures waiting to be discovered.
24.What can be learned about cormorant fishing?
A.It's a major industry.

When Joe Gray coppiced (a spot of woodland on his Essex farm,he noticed that a
deserted pond (sprang back into life after it was exposed to sunlight.
Since then,he and his wife,Emma, have restored 11 dead ponds on their regenerative farm.
Ponds that were shaded over or overgrown by bushes have been opened up to sunlight and dug out,
and are now booming with rare water plants and insects-also providing food and water for birds
and bats.
This pond restoration effort has been motivated by the Essex lost ponds project.Volunteers
have identified 17,200 ponds across the county,of which 10,400 have disappeared, mostly
because of agricultural development in the 20th century. When tractors replaced horses, there was
less need for ponds for livestock (and when fields were enlarged, many ponds were filled in.
"The dragonflies, the beetles, the birds flying overhead-it's just pumping out nature into the
farmed landscape."says Mark Nowers,a wild bird conservation adviser in Essex.Wild birds need
sufficient and accessible seed-rich habitat and thick bushes to nest in,but are also assisted by
restored ponds because they require access to fresh water close to nesting sites.
Ponds take little or no land out of food production. The Grays now devote 40%of their land
to wildlife-restoring projects but grow as much food as before, simply because they are now using
only the most productive parts of their land.Their regenerative farming-not ploughing, and
thereby boosting soil health and wider biodiversity-alongside seed mixes for wild birds attracts

You've probably heard scientists say"the best explanation is the simplest one."But is it?
Why should we assume the simplest explanation is closest to the truth? This idea, known as
Occam's razor(奥卡婚剃刀),is a form of minimalism:we should not introduce entities(实体)
unless we have evidence that they exist. In other words:don't make stuff up.
In 1687 Isaac Newton expanded on this idea,"We are to admit no more causes of natural
things than such as are both true and sufficient to explain their appearances."He continued:"To
this purpose,Nature docs nothing in vain, for Nature is pleased with simplicity."But this claim is
strange.Who is to say what "pleases nature"?And doesn't this guidance assume we know what
we are trying to figure out?
英语试题第7页(共12页)
Consider the work of Vera C.Rubin, who found evidence for the existence of dark matter.
While studying the movement of galaxies(),Rubin discovered that the speed at which stars
rotated around the center of their galaxies made sense only if these galaxies contained an
additional mass weighing about 10 times more than the visible stars. The claim of a new form of
"dark"matter-unseeable and present in far greater quantities than the visible matter of the
universe-was not a simple explanation, but it turned out to be the best explanation.
Physics is filled with explanations that are unexpected.Newton explained light as being made
of particles, whereas other scientists explained it as a wave.Quantum mechanics, however, tells us
that light is both a wave and a particle.Newton's account was simpler, but modern physics tells us
that the more complex model is closer to the truth.
Occam's razor is not a theory. It's an idea held independently of factual evidence. There are
new things under the sun,and rare events may be rare because they involve a complex
combination of events.Put this way,we can see Occam's razor as a failure of imagination. Our
explanations should match the world as best as we can.Science is about letting the chips fall, and
sometimes this means accepting that the truth is not simple, even if it would make our lives easier
if it were.
32.What does the underlined word"minimalism"in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Ignoring existing facts.
B.Creating physical entities.
C.Making use of abstract concepts.
D.Avoiding unnecessary complexity.
33.What is the author's attitude toward Newton's idea?
A.Critical.
B.Unclear.
C.Conservative.
D.Approving.
34.Why does the author mention Rubin's discovery?
A.To reveal the beauty of galaxies.
B.To throw doubt on Occam's Razor.
C.To explain the speed of star rotation.
D.To emphasize the value of her contribution.
35.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.Occam's razor can make our lives easier.
B.A simpler explanation doesn't always work.
C.Truth will always be truth regardless of disbelief.
D.Imagination will sometimes turn out to be complex.

As research is becoming more international and multidisciplinary(涉及多门学科的),some
people think the Nobel Prize award system is outdated and needs some changes. When Alfred
Nobel established the Nobel Prizes in his will in 1895,he specified the areas of work in which
they should be awarded, namely,Physics,Chemistry,Physiology or Medicine,Literature, and Peace.
36 The only change has been the introduction of the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1969.
37 Researchers have spent much of the last century developing specialized and
sub-specialized fields of study, and now it has become clear that these sub-specializations are not
independent of each other but closely related.
Some greatest discoveries have been achieved through cooperation between disciplines.
Watson(a physicist)and Crick(a biologist)together discovered the structure of DNA.38 One
example is the ENCODE project for human genome sequencing(基因组测序),which involved
very large international teams that worked together over decades.
But except for the prize for Peace, which can be awarded to organizations, all other Nobel
Prizes are awarded to individuals.Further, the Nobel Prize allows a maximum of three shared
winners for each of the disciplines awarded.39
Perhaps it is time for change. With the Nobel Prize as a current hot topic of discussion, the
issue of its incompatibility()with multidisciplinary research has been discussed by several
leading international newsletters.40 The Guardian suggests that new interdisciplinary
categories be introduced and varied every year.Scientific American proposes increasing the
maximum number of awardees.Whatever be the way forward,it is clear that the trend toward
multidisciplinary studies should be acknowledged and encouraged.
A.They compared genome sequences.
B.Some changes have been recommended.
C.However,some are achieved individually.
D.But science has developed tremendously since 1895.
E.Even today the Nobel Prize is awarded in these categories.
F.This means that not all members can receive this great honor.
G.Also, modern scientific breakthroughs often result from collective efforts.
