Researchers say these little-studied bridges, which can spread up to 50 meters and last for hundreds of years, could help our cities a lot. “It’s really unbelievable how strong they are and they are growing stronger over time. They do no harm to the environment — they’re part of it,” said Ferdinand Ludvig from the Technical University of Munich.
The bridges spread across rivers in India’s Meghalaya area, connecting villages. They’re all “built” from the aerial roots (气根) of the same kind of tree: the Indian rubber tree. Different from bridges made of wood, they aren’t easily washed away and they don’t rot (腐烂)—a common problem in the world’s wettest area. They also last longer than modern bridges that can rot in the wet weather, said Ludvig.
Interviews with local people showed us the building process. At first, local people start by planting a young Indian rubber tree on both sides of the river. When the tree’s aerial roots come out, they wrap them around a frame (框架) and direct them to the other side of the river. Once the roots reach the opposite bank, they’re grounded into the earth. Then they develop smaller roots which are directed to the bank. It takes tens of years to build a bridge.
Ludvig and his team mapped a total of 74 bridges. While some of the bridges became popular with visitors, seeing up to 2,000 visitors a day, said Ludvig, not all of the bridges they studied were in active use, with some in danger of being cut down for firewood.
26. What does Ludvig think of these bridges in Meghalaya?
A. They are environmentally-friendly.
B. They are widely studied by researchers.
C. They are old and should be replaced.
D. They are becoming weaker over time.
27. How are the bridges in Meghalaya different from modern bridges?
A. They are longer, providing a solution for traffic.
B. They are higher, offering an interesting design.
C. They are broken more easily, requiring daily repairs.
D. They are fit for the wet weather and mixed with nature.
28. What does the underlined word “process” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Tool. B. Purpose. C. Step. D. Product.
29. What can we know about the bridges in Meghalaya?
A. They are designed by Ludvig and his team.
B. They can be built quickly and used in a year.
C. Some of them drew thousands of visitors a day.
D. Most of them are in danger of being cut down.
30. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A The advantages of modern bridges.
B. The introduction of special tree bridges.
C. The history of old tree bridges.
D. The information of different bridges.
C

A. The advantages of modern bridges.
B. The introduction of special tree bridges.
C. The history of old tree bridges.
D. The information of different bridges.
