In the sleepiness at the end of a library nap, at 2 a. m., I wasn’t sure where I was. I extended my arm to reach for a human being, but what I grabbed was a used copy of The Odyssey, the book about going home. My heart ached.
I wanted very much to study the Western classics, because I knew nothing about it. Western civilization was different, mysterious and thus appealing. Besides, because I longed to be accepted here, I was thirsty to understand American society. What better way to comprehend it than to study the very ideas on which it is based?
But at 2 a. m., I was tired of them all: Homer, Virgil and Plato (great masters of Western classics). Their words were dull and the presentations were complicated. The professors here do not teach in the same way that teachers in China do. Studying humanities (人文学处) in China, students will be given standard interpretations during lectures. Here, professors ask questions and let the students argue, research and write papers on their own. At Yale, I often waited for the end-of-class “correct” answers, which never came.
Learning Humanities here in Yale was really challenging for me. The names of the giants were impossibly difficult to pronounce and I simply didn’t write in English fast enough to take notes in class. I hoped my dedication to study would make up for lack of preparation. On weekend nights, when my American roommates were out on dates, I would tell them I had planned a date with Homer or Aristotle.
During calls home every two weeks, my mother pleaded with me to take chemistry or biology. Science was the same everywhere, she said. And I, like everybody else from China, was well prepared in math, physics and chemistry.
Instead, I visited the writing tutor — there is one in every undergraduate residential hall — for every paper I turned in. My papers were always written days before they were due. I often questioned professors after classes.
By the time I missed home so much that soup dumplings popped up in my head as I read, my reading list had been growing. And every paper of mine came back with an A.

5. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A. Determined and considerate. B. Sensitive and strong-willed.
C. Warm-hearted and intellectual. D. Diligent and self-disciplined.
6. What can be learned about the author’s learning experience at Yale?
A. He struggled with his course and grew inactive.
B. He stuck to his choice and performed well in humanities eventually.
C. He disapproved of the teaching style at Yale.
D. He got encouragement from his mother for his choice of courses.
7. Which could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Talking with the Giants: A Process of Self-awakening.
B. From China to Yale: A Student’s Academic Pursuit.
C. Cultural Crossroads: A Student’s Struggle with Western Customs.
D. Adapting to the West: A Student’s Road to Success.

Americans spend more on lottery (彩票) tickets than movies, video games, and concerts combined. Leading the way are the lowest-income households, which spend an estimated $412 each year, four times the amount spent by the highest-income households. As financial writer Morgan Housel describes in his 2022 book, The Psychology of Money, “without $400 for an emergency, low-income lottery players are blowing their safety nets on something with a one-in-millions chance of making a fortune. While a player may occasionally get lucky, the more they play over lotteries, the likelier it is that their monetary losses will reach the intended average.”
So why do those living under the worst conditions spend so much more on them? The financial knowledge might explain that this behavior is born purely of ignorance, but Housel and scientific researchers point to alternative psychological explanations. They highlighted the inequalities present in the U. S. and noted that low-income players may consider lotteries to be a “social equalizer” which creates hope for material improvement and a higher social status that cannot be achieved through conventional channels.
Is it really so ridiculous that a person laboring for 50 hours a week making $20 an hour would spend $10 a week on lottery tickets to, at least for a moment, entertain the dream of becoming rich? A millionaire choosing to spend a tenth of their savings on a speedboat is arguably making a worse financial decision. The same could be said of an office worker making $100,000 a year spending S200 each week to dine out wastefully.
As Housel points out in his book, the numerous ways we can spend our money, and even the modern monetary system itself, have only been around for no more than decades. Our slow-to-adapt thinking systems are not well-prepared for making solid financial decisions in a rapidly changing world.
“We all do crazy things with money because we' re all relatively new to this game and what looks crazy to you might make sense to me,” Housel wrote. “But no one is crazy. We all make decisions based on our own unique experiences that seem to make sense to us in a given moment.”
8. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
A. Those who earn more spend more on lottery tickets.
B. Americans like playing the lottery tickets best.
C. Low-income households can’t afford to spend money on lottery tickets.
D. Those who place expectations on lottery tickets may lose hope at last.
9. According to Housel, what accounts for the popularity of lottery tickets among low-income players?
A. They want to fight against inequality.
B. They lack a sense of financial management.
C. They can have anticipation for better life.
D. They need entertainment to meet psychological demands.
10. Why are a millionaire and an office worker mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To justify the consumption of lottery tickets.
B. To make a contrast between different spending patterns.
C. To emphasize the misuse of money in distinct areas.
D. To showcase their financial decisions on distributing money.
11. What’s Housel’s attitude towards the low-income lottery players?
A. Dismissive. B. Admiring. C. Critical. D. Tolerant.
D
For many cat owners, torn furniture seems to come with the territory. Our feline (猫科的) friends have an instinct to use their claws and scratch, which humans often view as a behavioral problem to be corrected.
Recently, a team of researchers explored what factors influence domestic cats to scratch and found it’s not necessarily simply tied to a bad kitty. Personality traits, the presence of small children, and the type of play cats are engaging in have a significant impact on scratching behavior.
In the study, the team surveyed over 1,200 cat owners in France about their cats’ daily lives, characteristics, and undesired scratching behaviors. They found that stress was the leading reason for unwanted scratching. If children are around–especially younger kids–stress appears to be strengthened and is one of the motivations for cats to stress-scratch. However, the authors note that this link is still not fully understood and more study is needed.
A separate factor that also may be connected to stress is playfulness. Stress levels can rise when cats play for long periods of time due to uninterrupted stimulation. “We see a clear link between certain environmental and behavioral factors and increased scratching behavior in cats,” said Salgirli Demirbas.
While some factors like a cat’s personality and the presence of children can’t be changed to limit scratching, there are some interventions that cat owners can make. “Providing safe hiding places, high observation spots, and ample play opportunities can also help relieve stress and engage the cat in more constructive activities,” Salgirli Demirbas said.
Setting up multiple short play sessions that best simulate successful hunting scenes is crucial. This can be done by using treat dispensers (发放机) shaped like mice, setting up high observation sites in the home, making sure that play with cats is more interactive, and letting cats safely explore the outdoors occasionally. Play sessions that feed a cat’s inner hunter are more likely to sustain a cats’ interest, resulting in decreased stress levels and reduce excessive scratching on furniture.
“The study relied on self-reported data, which possibly leads to subjectivity. However, we have gained some unique insights into cats’ scratching behavior that we believe we can build on to study more effective strategies to manage this behavior,” said Salgirli Demirbas.
12. According to the passage, which factor influences a cat’s scratching behavior?
A. The presence of family members.
B. The cat’s lack of playing in the wild.
C. The cat’s learned behaviour.
D. The cat’s stress level.
13. What does the underlined word “simulate” in paragraph 6 possibly mean?
A. Motivate. B. Influence. C. Imitate. D. Handle.
14. What does Demirbas mean in the last paragraph?
A. The study is totally subjective.
B. The study is based on the data from scientific experiments.
C. The study has paved the way for their further research.
D. The study has uncovered the secret of managing the owner-pet relationship.
15. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To present a research concerning the cat’s owners.
B. To illustrate the fact that cats are born to scratch.
C. To clarify concepts confusing the researchers.
D. To suggest solutions to the undesired scratching behaviors.

David Williams spent most summers in the mountains with his 13-year-old son, Charlie. One fateful day, around noon, David and Charlie were on the mountain at the Bighorn Crags. Having safely secured to a tree from about 250 meters above ground level, Charlie fed rope to his father. On his way up, David accidentally moved a massive boulder (鹅卵石). It sailed through the air and hit him. He barely had time to scream before everything went black. When Charlie noticed that, he pulled on the rope and an automatic braking device arrested the fall in an instant. “Dad! Are you okay?” he asked anxiously.
Hanging 12 meters below his son, David was hidden from Charlie’ s view. A minute passed before he managed to call out “Charlie, I’m here!”. Obviously, he was injured. His left arm and leg couldn’t move and the pain came from his back nearly knocked him out again.
With all his might, Charlie assisted his father back to their campsite. Charlie knew he must go to seek assistance. Ready for a long hike, he put some necessities in his pack, along with a whistle, in case he had to ward off unexpected wild animals or get noticed. Then, he took a map with the location of the campsite. Before leaving, Charlie bid farewell to his father, who wished him good luck and urged him to be careful. Outside the tent, Charlie prayed and promised to return with help.
Charlie’s destination was a cabin (小屋) equipped with a two-way radio, where a couple of volunteers lived. Charlie hoped they would use the radio to call for help. But he knew it would take him quite a long time to get there. Following his father’s instructions, Charlie took the detour, calling out to potential campers along the way.
With night approaching, Charlie’s hike grew increasingly tough but he never thought to give up. Focusing on the rhythm of his footsteps, Charlie kept moving forward.

4. Why did the author want to learn Western classics?
A. To explore the difference between Chinese and western cultures.
B To gain a certain perception of the American society.
C. To satisfy his curiosity about unsolved mysteries.
D. To enrich his learning experience.
5. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A. Determined and considerate. B. Sensitive and strong-willed.
C. Warm-hearted and intellectual. D. Diligent and self-disciplined.
6. What can be learned about the author’s learning experience at Yale?
A. He struggled with his course and grew inactive.
B. He stuck to his choice and performed well in humanities eventually.
C. He disapproved of the teaching style at Yale.
D. He got encouragement from his mother for his choice of courses.
7 Which could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Talking with the Giants: A Process of Self-awakening.
B. From China to Yale: A Student’s Academic Pursuit.
C. Cultural Crossroads: A Student’s Struggle with Western Customs.
D. Adapting to the West: A Student’s Road to Success.

Americans spend more on lottery (彩票) tickets than movies video games, and concerts combined.
A To justify the consumption of lottery tickets.
B. To make a contrast between different spending patterns.
C. To emphasize the misuse of money in distinct areas.
D. To showcase their financial decisions on distributing money.
11. What’s Housel’s attitude towards the low-income lottery players?
A. Dismissive. B. Admiring. C. Critical. D. Tolerant.
D 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第一段中“Leading the way are the lowest-income households, which spend an estimated $412 each year, four times the amount spent by the highest-income households.
根据第二段中“They highlighted the inequalities present in the U.S. and noted that low-income players may consider lotteries to be a ‘social equalizer’ which creates hope for material improvement and a higher social status that cannot be achieved through conventional channels. (他们强调了美国存在的不平等现象,并指出低收入玩家可能会认为彩票是一种“社会均衡器”,能为物质条件的改善和更高社会地位带来希望,而这些是通过传统渠道无法实现的。)”可知,低收入玩家购买彩票是出于对更好生活的期待。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Is it really so ridiculous that a person laboring for 50 hours a week making 10 a week on lottery tickets to, at least for a moment, entertain the dream of becoming rich? A millionaire choosing to spend a tenth of their savings on a speedboat is arguably making a worse financial decision. The same could be said of an office worker making 200 each week to dine out wastefully”(一个人每周工作50个小时,每小时赚20美元,却每周花10美元买彩票,至少在一瞬间,沉浸在成为富人的梦想中,这真的很荒谬吗? 故选A。
根据最后一段““We all do crazy things with money because we're all relatively new to this game and what looks crazy to you might make sense to me,” Housel wrote. “But no one is crazy. We all make decisions based on our own unique experiences that seem to make sense to us in a given moment.” (“我们在金钱方面都会做些疯狂的事,因为我们都是这场游戏的新手,在你看来疯狂的事情对我来说可能是有道理的,”Housel写道。“但没有人是疯狂的。我们所有人都是基于自己在某一时刻看似合理的独特经历来做出决定的。”)”可知,Housel认为低收入玩家购买彩票的行为是基于他们自己的独特经历做出的决定,没有人是疯狂的,这表明他对低收入彩票玩家持宽容态度。故选D。

D 13. C 14. C 15. D

In classic Chinese tea books, many authors refer to “tea-drinking” ___38___ “eating tea”. This expression is still ___39___ (occasion) used today. By today’s standard, “eating tea” is definitely difficult ___40___ (understand). How can we eat a liquid? Shouldn’t we use the verb “drink”?

Unlike modern tea-drinking, ancient tea-drinking did not simply put tea leaves in hot water. 【
故填a。
refer to...as... 故填as。
故填to understand。
故填where。
故填and。
故填was served。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After a few hundred meters, he thought he heard voices. Charlie’s heart was pounding as he approached the cabin. He blew the whistle again, this time with more urgency, and called out, “Hello! Can you help me 2” The men turned towards him, and upon seeing his distress, one of them rushed over. “What’s wrong, son?” the man asked, concern etched on his face. Charlie quickly explained the situation, his words tumbling out in a mix of relief and anxiety. The volunteers immediately sprang into action, one of them heading inside to use the two-way radio while the other stayed with Charlie, offering him a seat and some water. Then they took him to the hospital with the rescue team.
The next day, at the hospital, Charlie arrived at Mr. William’s bedside. Mr. Williams was still pale, but his condition had stabilized thanks to the quick response of the rescue team. Charlie held his father’s hand, feeling a mix of emotions — relief that his father was safe, guilt for leaving him alone in the mountains, and pride in his own actions. As he looked at his father’s peaceful face, he made a silent promise to always be there for him, no matter what.
