As the world around them is changing, teenagers continue to need guidance and support from both parents. Studies show that teens who have an active relationship with their fathers are less likely (可能的)to involve themselves in dangerous behaviors and more likely ton succeed in school and develop higher self-worth, because their fathers go beyond social expectations to devote attention to them.
Peer (同龄人) pressure has always been a big part of the teens’ experience. Even the best father can’t completely protect their kids from the growing influence of their peer group. However, studies show that teenagers whose fathers focus on their lives are more likely to resist (抵抗) the more bad effects of peer pressure, taking drugs, for example.
Teens may not like to admit it, but they are watching their parents closely and often follow their example. An interesting finding explains just how important parents are, especially Dad. Swiss researchers discovered that if Dad attends church, even though Mom doesn’t, 44 percent of the kids are still more likely to keep going to church as adults. But if Mom goes regularly and Dad never shows up, only 2 percent of the kids continue to attend.
Teenagers face a lot of difficult choices, especially in their later teens. Fathers don’t get to make those choices for them, but they can be influenced. For example, teenagers can learn a lot from their parents’ concern on what to do when they finish high school. Should they go directly to college and, if so, where? Should they consider going to trade schools, joining the army or looking for a job?A father’s guidance brings a long-term perspective that teens often lack to these important decisions.
4. Teenagers without fathers’ focus are more likely to________.
A. have higher self-worth
B. experience some dangerous things
C. become the best students in school
D. resist all bad effects of peer pressure
5. What does the third paragraph tell us?
A. More teenagers pay no attention to their parents.
B. Teenagers never attend church with their mothers.
C. Teenagers often treat their fathers as role models.
D. Fewer teenagers like to attend church wit h their fathers.
6. Which can replace the underlined word “perspective” in the last paragraph?
A. lots of concern
B. job
C. school
D. point of view
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Teenagers are greatly influenced by their fathers.
B. Teenagers care less about what their parents do.
C. Mothers have no effect on their children’s life.
D. Fathers should make choices for teenagers directly.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions—and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack from University of Glasgow, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, while Easterners favor the eyes and ignore the mouth.”
According to Jack and his colleagues, the discovery shows that communication of human emotions is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used reliably to convey emotions in crosscultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the facial movements of 13 Western people and 13 Eastern people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, or angry. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggests that while Westerners use the whole face to convey emotions, Easterners use the eyes more and the mouth less.”
In short, the data shows that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotions. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotions. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
8. The discovery shows that Westerners ________.
A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth
B. consider facial expressions universally reliable
C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
9. What were the 26 participants asked to do in the study?
A. To make a face at each other.
B. To get their faces impressive.
C. To classify some face pictures.
D. To observe the researchers’ faces.
10. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The participants in the study.
B. The researchers of the study.
C. The errors made in the study.
D. The data collected from the study.
11. In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to ________.
A. do translation more successfully
B. study the mouth frequently
C. examine the eyes more attentively
D. read facial expressions more correctly

Many people wrongly think that cities don’t have farms and fruits and vegetables are only grown in the country. Believe it or not, there are more urban farms popping up in cities all over the world.
Alexandra Sullivan, a food systems researcher in New York, studies urban agriculture. Urban agriculture is another name for farming and gardening in a city environment. Ms. Sullivan studies everything from tiny gardens in empty lots between buildings to bigger fields that have been planted and grown. According to Ms. Sullivan, “Urban agriculture has existed since cities have, across the world.”
The number of humans living in urban areas, or cities, is increasing. The amount of people who wanted to garden in urban areas is also rising. Ms. Sullivan says, “In small gardens, on rooftops and indoors, city residents grow fruits, vegetables, grains, and herbs, and raise animals to produce milk, eggs, honey, and meat. City residents use these foods as supplements to food produced by rural agriculture.” Even though some people who live in urban areas grow crops, urban residents still need to rely on food grown in rural areas. This is because a city doesn’t have enough space to grow enough food for everyone living in it.
In New York City, urban farmers have come up with many different ways to grow their own produce, even though there isn’t a lot of room. For example, Brooklyn Grange is a farming operation that has two rooftop vegetable farms in New York City. All together, the farms are made up of 2.5 acres of rooftop space. This makes Brooklyn Grange one of the largest rooftop farming operations in the world.
Brooklyn Grange grows all kinds of things. The farming company sells its vegetables to local residents and restaurants. And because the farms are on rooftops, they are specially adapted to their urban location. They use available space that is not needed for anything else. As more urban farmers find ways to grow food in cities, urban residents will be better able to get fresher materials for their meals.
12. Which of the following is Ms. Sullivan’s opinion about urban agriculture?
A. Urban agriculture has developed recently.
B. Urban agriculture takes too much city space.
C. Urban agriculture has a history as long as cities.
D. Urban agriculture can take the place of rural agriculture.
13. For traditional agriculture, urban agriculture is a(n) ________.
A. model B. addition
C. competitor D. replacement
14. What can we learn about Brooklyn Grange in New York City from the text?
A. It has large farming areas.
B. It can only grow single products.
C. It produces enough food for citizens.
D. It makes use of rooftop space to grow vegetables.
15. What is the author’s opinion on the urban farms?
A. Critical. B. Positive.
C. Worried. D. Confused.

47. 读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
For many years I have been feeling pity for orphans(孤儿). They lack the love of their parents and need the love and help of others. So I am doing what I can to help them. I visited them many times to experience their daily life.
Three years ago I even lived with the orphans on the street. These kids would mostly beg through the day to buy some food for themselves or eat the food given to them by the people passing by. One unusual incident happened during my second week of staying with them on the sidewalk.
I sat with them and shared the meal I had bought for them from a nearby restaurant. They sat with me in a circle and happily started eating. Suddenly one of them, a twelve-year-old boy, caught my hand, looked at me and removed my watch, and I continued eating the meal without turning around to see where the little boy ran with my watch.
After about forty-five minutes he showed up and sat beside me again. I just looked at him and smiled without saying anything about the watch. The little boy took a small packet from his pocket, opened it, had a bite of the bread and offered the same bread to me. I took it and ate it willingly. As soon as I finished eating the bread, a smile appeared on his face. Slowly he put his hand in his pocket and returned my watch. I smiled at him and wore my watch once again. The little boy later on told me that I passed the test.
Paragraph 1:
I was a little surprised and asked him what test I passed.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Then I asked him why he gave me food to eat.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1. I was a little surprised and asked him what test I passed. He told me that he took the watch and ran away to see my reaction and for that good forty-five minutes he was hiding in a building and watching my expressions. He said that I simply kept quiet. There was no sign of anger or disappointment on my face. Nor did I start to catch up with him angrily. He said that meant I was generous and regarded him as one of my family members.
Paragraph 2. Then I asked him why he gave me food to eat. He told me that when I gave them something to eat, they ate happily so he wanted to see whether I was happy to eat what he gave me. I happily ate the food he gave me in his presence. He was greatly moved and felt that I did not mind his dirt. I am one of them. I realized these kids are hungry for love and trust.

However studies show that teenagers whose fathers focus on their lives are more likely to resist (抵抗) the more bad effects of peer pressure, taking drugs, for example.
C
D To observe the researchers’ faces.
10. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The participants in the study.
B. The researchers of the study.
C. The errors made in the study.
D. The data collected from the study.
11. In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to ________.
A. do translation more successfully
B. study the mouth frequently
C. examine the eyes more attentively
D. read facial expressions more correctly
D
B It can only grow single products.
C. It produces enough food for citizens.
D. It makes use of rooftop space to grow vegetables.
15. What is the author’s opinion on the urban farms?
A. Critical. B. Positive.
C. Worried. D. Confused.
