His character in the movie finds an abandoned baby on the street and takes him home. These two are both a family and a team, held close by genuine joy in one another’s company. When they’re torn apart, it’s heartbreaking; when they’re reunited, it restores our faith in the order of the universe. Like many of Chaplin’s projects, the production of the film was full of humor. Bicycle Thieves There are few greater filmwatching experiences than Bicycle Thieves. On Antonio’s first day of work, his bicycle is stolen, and he and his young son Bruno set out to get it back, a quest of desperation and need that at first strengthens the fatherson bond, before nearly tearing it apart. What is even more impressive is that the director used no studio sets — all of the settings are reallife locations in Rome. The Night of the Shooting Stars The movie, set in Tuscany, follows a group of citizens who leave their village just before their houses are set to be blown up by the Nazis (纳粹). The story is told through the eyes of sixyearold Cecilia, who sees the event as a great adventure. The movie is a mixture of comedy, fantasy and sorrowful drama. Let There Be Light It is a deeply moving documentary that describes, specifically, the effects of wartime trauma (创伤) on soldiers but also, more generally, the way men who have never been encouraged to talk about their feelings must find a way to do so in order to heal. 21.What type of film might The Kid be? A.History. B.Science fiction. C.Romance. D.Comedy. 22.Which aspect of Bicycle Thieves might impress the audiences most? A.Its filming spots. B.Its special effects. C.Its excellent actors. D.Its exciting plot. 23.What do The Night of the Shooting Stars and Let There Be Light have in common? A.They are of the same type. B.They have elements of comedy. C.They involve the influence of wars. D.They have the same shooting angle. B Louis Pasteur was a world-famous French chemist and biologist. He is particularly famous for his work on rabies vaccine The rabies virus enters the body through the bite of an infected animal or through infected saliva (唾液) entering an existing wound. After experimenting with the saliva of animals suffering from the disease, Pasteur concluded that the disease rests in the central nervous system of the body. By studying the tissue of infected animals — rabbits, Pasteur was able to produce a form of the virus. This could be used for inoculation (接种). On July 6, 1885, Pasteur tested his vaccine on a man for the first time. He saved the life of a young man called Joseph Meister who had been bitten by a rabid dog. Pasteur was urged to treat him with his new method. The treatment lasted 10 days and in the end Joseph recovered and remained healthy. Since then thousands have been saved by this treatment. On March 1886, Pasteur was invited to present his results to the Academy of Sciences and in 1888 went on to found the Pasteur Institute in Paris. This was a pioneering clinic for the study of infectious diseases, the treatment of rabies and a centre for teaching. Pasteur directed the institute personally until he died. The Pasteur Institute is still one of the most important centres in the world. Pasteur became a national hero and was honored in many ways. He died at Saint-Cloud on September 24, 1895 and was given a state funeral at the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Modifications of the Pasteur method are still used in rabies treatment today. A newer vaccine which contains the virus prepared from human cells grown in the lab is safer and requires a shorter course of injections. 24. Rabies probably can destroy a person’s ________. A. saliva B. nervous system C. skin D. blood 25. What can we learn about Pasteur’s test of his vaccine on the man? A. It didn’t save the man’s life. B. It proved to be a great success. C. The man was his second patient. D. The man was sent to a clinic ten days later. 26. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Pasteur’s rabies vaccine is out of date. B. Injections of vaccine still take much time. C. Much improvement has been made on rabies vaccine. D. A new rabies vaccine has already been tested on patients. 27. What’s the text mainly about? A. The treatment for rabies. B. The introduction to rabies vaccine. C. An analysis of the cause of rabies. D. Pasteur’s devotion to rabies vaccine. C More and more researchers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor biodiversity and assist endangered species. Different from conventional methods that can damage ecosystems or require considerable time, labor and resources, AI has the potential to quickly and effectively analyze vast quantities of real-world data. Ecologist Jörg Müller at the University of Würzburg, Germany, and his colleagues have shown that AI tools can help to quantify biodiversity in tropical (热带的) forests by identifying animal species from audio (音频的) recordings. “Our results demonstrate that AI is ready for more comprehensive species identification,” says Müller. “All that is needed now is more training data collected by humans.” AI is imperfect, but it could speed up important discoveries, says Nicolas Miailhe, Paris-based founder of The Future Society, an international non-profit organization that aims to better govern AI. “We badly need human specialists to design models, as well as collect, label, check and interpret data,” he says. Researchers at Conservation AI, a UK-based non-profit organization in Liverpool that uses AI technology for various ecology projects, have developed models that can search through footage and images from drones (无人机) or camera traps to identify wildlife and track animal movements. So far, Conservation AI has processed more than 12.5 million images and detected more than 4 million individual animal appearances across 68 species. “The platform can process tens of thousands of images an hour, in contrast to humans who can do a few thousand at best,” says Paul Fergus, one of Conservation AI’s lead researchers. “The speed at which AI processes data could allow conservationists to protect endangered species from sudden threats,” he adds. Miailhe is hopeful that AI can be routinely applied to real-world conservation efforts in the near future. “That’s clearly the way to go,” he says. But he warns that AI consumes computing power, which ultimately has opposite effects on ecosystems. “Environmental impact assessments should be at the center of AI risk management,” he says. 28. Which aspect of AI attracts ecological researchers most? A. Its data-processing capability. B. Its computing accuracy. C. Its environmental friendliness. D. Its information-accessing speed. 29. What does Müller think is needed for AI to be more helpful? A. More complicated tests. B. More images of animals. C. More information of audio recordings. D. More data of tropical forests. 30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. AI platforms’ principle of species identification. B. Conservation Al’s comment on its AI platform. C. AI models’ advantages in ecological conservation. D. Al’s potential for providing quick-response measures. 31. What is Miailhe’s attitude toward using AI for ecological conservation? A. Objective. B.Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Negative. D A smoke bomb from a party started a major blaze(火焰) near Los Angeles in September, just one of many recent wildfires ignited(引燃) by people. Now, an analysis of satellite data shows human - caused blazes spread much faster and kill more trees than ones ignited by lightning. Fire has always been a part of California’ s natural history. But several centuries of human settlement have created new conditions that promote its spread. Studies have shown human ignition is to blame for 84% of all wildfires in the United States, and 97% of all those that threaten homes. Human - caused fires always seemed more extreme, says Stijn Hantson,a fire ecologist at the University of California, Irvine, who led the new research. But measurements of how fast they spread and their impacts on ecosystems(生态系统) in California had not been explored, he notes. To examine those differences, Hantson and his colleagues analyzed satellite data for 214 wildfires in California between 2012 and 2018. Human-caused fires typically spread about 1.83 kilometers per day, more than twice as fast as lightning-ignited burns, the team reports. The faster spreading fires also burned more violently and killed “double or triple” the trees as lightning-caused ones. However, there is no fundamental difference in the chemistry of a human - caused blaze. “A fire is a fire” Hantson says. “It’s the surrounding things that matter.” Causes of fires ranging from improperly thrown cigarettes to sparking(冒火花) power lines could ignite a blaze on any given day, he says, while lightning strikes and dry thunderstorms only happen seasonally. The researchers tracked meteorological data and found that human-caused fires were more likely to start on days with extreme weather conditions, and were more associated with drier, less - forested landscapes. This adds to scientists’ understanding of how humans are extending the fire season, says Nathan Mietkiewicz, an ecologist with the National Ecological Observation Network. 32. The author uses some data in paragraph 2 to show that ______. A. most wildfires threaten people’s homes B. wildfires are mostly caused by humans C. wildfire is a part of California’s natural history D. wildfires break out frequently in the United States 33. What’s the purpose of Hantson’s research? A. To prove how extreme human-caused fires are. B. To find out the causes and solutions of wildfires. C. To explore the speed and effects of wildfires caused by humans. D. To examine the differences between a human-caused blaze and a nature-caused one. 34. How is the result presented in paragraph 4? A. By giving examples. B. By giving definitions. C. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By making comparisons. 35. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. Wildfires only happen in dry, less-forested areas. B. Humans should be responsible for the extended fire season. C. Lightning strikes and thunderstorms can always lead to wildfires. D. Human-caused fires and lightning-caused fires are basically different. Individuals' communication skills play a vital role in promoting effective communication within the workplace. Tom worked as an accountant, while Mary was a cashier at a local supermarket. Despite their modest income, they stressed in family the values of integrity, perseverance, and a love for learning. Nancy was a bright and talented girl with a particular passion for writing. She loved to weave stories and express her thoughts through words. One day, Nancy met with an advertisement for The Scholastic Workshop, a renowned (有名的) student writing camp with a wide range of categories, including writing techniques, taking seminars on essay improvement, meeting published writers, and a writing contest, with the biggest prize being 1,000 dollars. The thought of participating filled Nancy with both excitement and worry. She knew she had the talent, but the fear of failure discouraged her. Nancy's teacher, Mr. White, knew well about her talent in writing and encouraged her to pursue her dream. He also knew clearly what the girl was worried about. He decided to have a hearttoheart conversation with her. “Nancy,” Mr. White said genuinely, “there might be problems, but your writing is a gift, and you should share it with the world.” Nancy's eyes welled up with tears. “But what if I fail? What if they laugh at me?” Mr. White placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Failure is a part of life, Nancy. It's how we learn and grow. And even if they laugh, remember that your words have the power to touch hearts and change minds.” Back home, Nancy told her parents about the program and gained their support, with which Nancy was a little more relieved. She registered for the workshop as required and got admitted successfully. Thrilled and nervous, she went to the workshop managed by the Rockerfeller University. Para.1 Not everything went well there. A newer vaccine which contains the virus prepared from human cells grown in the lab is safer and requires a shorter course of injections.”,说明巴斯德的方法仍在改进使用,新疫苗更安全且注射疗程更短,这表明狂犬病疫苗已经有了很大的改进,答案选 C。 C篇 答案:A 解析:第一段提到 “AI has the potential to quickly and effectively analyze vast quantities of real - world data”,强调 AI 能够快速有效地分析大量现实世界数据,这突出了其数据处理能力,这是吸引生态研究人员的主要方面。 答案:C 解析:根据 “AI tools can help to quantify biodiversity in tropical forests by identifying animal species from audio recordings” 以及 “All that is needed now is more training data collected by humans” 可知,Müller 团队利用 AI 通过音频记录识别动物物种来量化生物多样性,所以他认为需要更多音频记录方面的信息,C 选项正确。 答案:A 解析:Miailhe 一方面表示 “is hopeful that AI can be routinely applied to real - world conservation efforts in the near future”,对 AI 应用于生态保护充满希望;另一方面又 “warns that AI consumes computing power, which ultimately has opposite effects on ecosystems”,指出 AI 对生态系统有负面影响,所以他的态度是客观的,既看到优点也认识到不足,A 选项正确。 Studies have shown human ignition is to blame for 84% of all wildfires in the United States, and 97% of all those that threaten homes.",这些数据表明在美国,大部分野火是由人类引发的,B选项正确。 答案:C 解析:第三段明确指出Hantson的研究内容:"measurements of how fast they spread and their impacts on ecosystems in California had not been explored",即研究野火传播速度和对生态系统的影响,C选项正确。 文章最后明确提到这些发现有助于理解"how humans are extending the fire season",表明人类应对火灾季节延长负责,B选项正确。 A fire is a fire"矛盾。 F 选项 “Workplace communication starts at the individual but doesn't stop there.” 答案:B 解析:空格前说与同事互动时要注意非语言暗示,B 选项 “Tone and body language can convey a lot that words don't.” A 选项 “Not every issue deserves its own meeting.” C 选项 “Good news is that there are ways to make meetings effective.” G 选项 “If you're trying to improve your communication skills, consider taking a course.” 41.B 根据后文“One day, Nancy decided to make her dream a reality.” search for意为“寻找”;think about意为“考虑”;depart for意为“出发前往”,均不符合此处语境。 settle down意为“定居,安定下来”;trip over意为“被…… 44.D 根据下一段“she thanked the regular climbers but continued”,可以看出他们是经常登山的人,因此这些人是有经验的登山者experienced有“经验丰富的”意思,符合语境。 46.C 本句表示: 别人警告她回去,这让她的心里产生了“怀疑”,自己是否能继续,doubt符合语境,且与最后一段“From that day forward,Nancy never doubted herself again”相照应。 再结合下一段“... knowing that she had the strength to climb any mountain, both in the world and 55 herself.” 57. by contrast 57. come on 58. anything like 59. appeal to 61. when 61. accuracy 62. be detected 63. up 64. fashionable 65. will be occupying 应用文 Sihua Countryside Park: A Green Escape Sihua Countryside Park, located in the northern part of Putian, is a must-see attraction in my hometown. This park stands out for its multifunctional features, including sightseeing, leisure, and cultural activities. Surrounded by rich greenery, it offers a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Known as the “green lung” of our city, it not only improves air quality but also provides a refreshing and healthy environment for visitors. If you want to relax and enjoy nature’s beauty, Sihua Countryside Park is the ideal place. You’ll surely love its charm! 续写思路: 结合原文,由续写第一段首句 “Not everything went well there.” 由第二段首句“Informed of the result, Nancy couldn’t wait to share it with Mr. White.” One possible version: Not everything went well there. While her peers seemed more confident, Nancy struggled to find her unique voice, fearing that her stories would never measure up. She grappled with intense self-doubt and anxiety, feeling frustrated from time to time. The writing exercises pushed her limits, and late nights were filled with frustration as she wrestled to organize her thoughts. Thanks to the encouragement from her parents and Mr. White, Nancy could persevere. The moment finally arrived! Nancy’s name echoed through the auditorium as the winner of the $1,000 prize.   Informed of the result, Nancy couldn’t wait to share it with Mr. White. She went to Mr. White’s office to share the great news to thank him in person. Nancy couldn’t contain her excitement as she rushed there. Mr. White beamed with joy, greatly proud of his student’s triumph. “This is just the beginning, Nancy. You’ve proven that hard work pays off,” he said, affirming her newfound confidence. Surrounded by the love and support of her family and teacher, Nancy felt empowered and ready to embrace her future as a writer. (Text 1) W: OK, I’m off to the airport. My flight leaves in 45 minutes. M: When will we see you back here in the office? W: Early next week. Look, it’s 11 o’clock already. I have to run. (Text 2) M: I have these tickets to deliver to you. I see that they are pre-paid, but I’ll need to see some identification. W: Hold on a minute. Let me get it for you.  (Text 3) M: It’s almost time for the grocery store to close and we can’t find an empty space.  W: I think it would be best for you to drop me off in front before they lock the doors. (Text 4) M: I’ve spent ages going through your cookery books! W: That’s a good book. M: What I’m going to attempt is this cake, see? Let me check if we’ve got all the ingredients, flour, sugar ... (Text 5) W: Shall we go out tonight? M: I don’t know. The game’s coming on soon. W: Oh come on, we watched a game last weekend. Let’s go bowling. M: Well, Manchester United are playing tonight, and you’re from Manchester. You should be cheering for them! (Text 6) W: Hi Tom! It’s great to see you again. What have you been doing lately? M: Oh, nothing much. I’ve been working in the garden. Nancy has been away for the past two weeks visiting her relatives in Chicago. W: I didn’t know she has family in Chicago. M: She was born in Chicago and lived there until she went to college. We met at university in California. W: How long have you lived here in Colorado? M: We’ve lived here for over 10 years. We moved here in 2013 because I had a new job. (Text 7) W: Hey, Mike, how have you been? M: I’ve been good, just keeping busy with work. How about you? W: Same here, work has been busy but manageable. So, any exciting news on your end? M: Actually, yes! I finally finished writing that novel I’ve been working on for the past year. W: That’s incredible! Congratulations! How does it feel to have it completed? M: It’s such a dreamlike feeling, honestly. I poured so much time and energy into it, and now that it’s done, it’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. W: I can only imagine. What’s the novel about? M: It’s a mystery set in a small coastal town, full of unexpected plot developments. W: That sounds fascinating! I can’t wait to read it. (Text 8) W: What brings you to Art Land today? M: Hi! I’m looking to take up painting as a hobby. I’m wondering if you could give me some advice. W: Of course! That’s what I’m here for. Well, do you have ideas about what subjects you want to paint? M: I think landscapes. We were looking at some old photographs on my birthday, and I thought it would be nice to recreate the rolling hills of the beautiful farm I grew up on in Manitoba. I’ve been living in Toronto for 5 decades now, and though I love city life and the downtown skyline, the impression of sunsets on the farm is unforgettable to me. W: Wonderful! Well, we have painting workshops at a local farm not too far from the city, every last Saturday of the month. The workshop goes from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. M: Thank you, I’ll definitely consider it. (Text 9) M: So what was your feeling when you heard the news that you won the competition? W: To be honest, I was not very happy because I had just failed my final exam. But as the days went by, I became more and more excited about my trip offered by the competition organizers. M: So which countries did you visit? W: I chose the Southeast Asian tour. M: What did you do? W: Each place was special in its own way. In Cambodia we spent most of the time touring beautiful temples. The best thing in Vietnam was the food. It was so cheap and delicious. In Indonesia we visited some small villages and learnt about the traditional culture there. I found it to be very rewarding. In Singapore, we went shopping. That was not so interesting to me because I think shopping in Thailand is better. M: When did you go there? W: Well, it was a two and a half week tour and it started in late-July. M: Sounds great. (Text 10) W: Hello and welcome to Radio Five. A reminder to listeners that, this coming Monday, James Dinnar will be joining us in the studio to talk about life as a high-profile businessman. James, of course, is the owner of the biggest restaurant chain in the state. He set up his first outlet only three years ago and has somehow been able to grow his business at lightning-quick speed. James’ story is quite special, not because he comes from a very wealthy family who made their money in the oil business, but because he turned his back on his family and all their wealth, and built his own company up from nothing — in an industry he knew nothing about before he started. This interview will be the first in our new series, What Makes an Entrepreneur. If you want to ask the guest something, submit your question via text at least half an hour before the show starts at 6 p.m. We will try to get through as many of your questions as we can in the 50 minutes we have live on air.
