On a sunny day, hundreds of volunteers arrived at the Yangtze River in Yichang, Hubei province.
The workers on board of a special ship nearby was about to release about 230,000 Chinese sturgeons (中华鲟) back into the waterway, where the fish naturally lay theır eggs.
The event’s organizer, the CTGC (China Three Gorges Corporation), also supports a research center to make sure such releases are successful.
Set up in 1982, the center’s job is to monitor the level of biodiversity (生物多样性) in the waters near the dam, the world’s largest hydropower facility (水力发电设备).
The sturgeon-releasing event was part, of a long-running effort to protect the Yangtze River’s ecosystem.
The Chinese sturgeon is known for its hard, protective scale (鳞甲). People call it a “living fossil” (活化石) because its long history and physical characteristics which have remained almost unchanged over millions of years.
But sadly, because of overfishing, pollution, and the effects of dam, the wild sturgeon population in China has dropped to dangerously low levels. In response, people have held more release events and put more effort into breeding (繁殖) more of the fish.
These release events are easier said than done, however. In the early days, the survival rate of freed sturgeons was quite low. Jiang Wei, an engineer at the research center, said that in 1985 the people who did this job before him started to study how to breed sturgeon, but there weren’t any books or information about it at that time.
Over the next 10 years, they found the key factors affecting the well-being of young fish, such as food, water temperature and quality, and did experiments to prevent diseases. “By 1995, the body length of the released fish had reached more than 30 centimeters, and more of them survived in the wild.” said Jiang.
Thanks to their continued efforts,21 million endangered fish have been released into the Yangtze since the CTGC was set up about 30 years ago, according to data provided by the organization. This is a great achievement in protecting the river’s weak ecosystem.

My 10-year-old son and his two friends attended a 2-hour basketball camp, with more than 60 kids. I watched how much fun my son was having the whole day. What’s not to like for a kid who loves basketball and being with friends?
A few minutes before the camp ended, there was a shooting game. Only a few kids were chosen to compete, and my son was not one of them. The game winners received prizes, and at last, a few kids were chosen as “all-stars” for effort, skill and participation. Again, my son didn’t get the chance. He was struggling to deal with his disappointment (失落).
When the camp ended and we walked out, I could see how upset he was. I love my kid’s confidence and his competitiveness, but it can also lead to dealing with disappointment and frustration. At the camp, he played a basketball game with kids he had never met, guarded them fiercely and took shots easily against them. All in all, the day was wonderful. However, these prizes ruined (毁灭) the experience. How could I help my son understand that most of his day was fun?
So I decided to simplify it for him. I did a maths to figure out the problem.
“My dear, the shooting contest and awards were about 6% of the whole day. But you know what? The rest of the camp, the parts that you enjoyed, were 94% of the day. Isn’t that always how it always seems to go? A single unhappy experience can clean out a good day.”
He looked at me for a while and then said with a big smile, “We need to think positively instead of just focusing on the negative 6%. Process is over results. Thank you, Mom.”

The event’s organizer, the CTGC (China Three Gorges Corporation), also supports a research center to make sure such releases are successful.

Over the next 10 years, they found the key factors affecting the well-being of young fish, such as food, water temperature and quality, and did experiments to prevent diseases. “By 1995, the body length of the released fish had reached more than 30 centimeters, and more of them survived in the wild.” said Jiang.
