Imagine you can open your fridge, open an app on your phone and immediately know which items will go bad soon. This is one of the applications that a new technology developed by engineers at the University of California San Diego would enable.
The technology combines a chip (芯片) integrated into product packaging and a software update on your phone. The phone becomes capable of identifying objects based on signals the chip sends out from specific frequencies, in this case Bluetooth or WiFi. In an industrial setting, a smartphone equipped with the software update could be used as a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader.
The work uses breakthroughs in backscatter (反向散射) communication, which uses signals already generated by your smartphone and re-directs them back in a format your phone can understand. Effectively, this technique uses less power than the latest technology to generate WiFi signals.
The custom chip, which is roughly the size of a grain of sand and costs only a few pennies to produce, needs so little power that it can be entirely powered by LTE signals, a technique for wireless broadband communication for mobile devices. The chip turns Bluetooth signals into WiFi signals, which can in turn be detected by a smartphone with that specific software update.
The technology’s broader promise is the development of devices that do not need batteries because they can harvest power from LTE signals instead. This in turn would lead to devices that are significantly less expensive and last longer, said Dinesh Bharadia, one of the paper’s senior authors.
“E-waste, especially batteries, is one of the biggest problems the planet is facing, after climate change,” Bharadia said.
For future research, the team will integrate this technology into other projects to demonstrate its capabilities, and they also hope to commercialize it, either through a startup or through an industry partner.
24. How does the chip interact with the phone?
A. By providing power for the phone. B. By producing LTE signals for the phone.
C. By giving Bluetooth signals to the phone. D. By sending WiFi signals back to the phone.
25. What is the potential of the technology according to Bharadia?
A. Reducing e-waste. B. Making batteries cheap.
C. Supplying power to LTE signals. D. Decreasing the cost of LTE signals.
26. What will the team do in the future?
A. Invest in new technologies. B. Bring the technology to market.
C Improve the quality of the device. D. Commercialize more research projects.
27. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. New technology turns smartphones into RFID readers
B. Smartphones need to be equipped with software updates
C. RFID readers obtain new chips and have new functions
D. Backscatter communication makes the best of smartphones

People with genetic syndromes (综合症) sometimes have telltale (泄露私密的) facial features, but using them to make a quick and cheap diagnosis can be tricky given there are hundreds of possible conditions they may have. A new neural network that analyzes photographs of faces can help doctors narrow down the possibilities.
Yaron Gurovich at biotechnology firm FDNA in Boston and his team built a neural network to look at the gestalt — or overall impression — of faces and return a list of the 10 genetic syndromes a person is most likely to have.
They trained the neural network, called DeepGestalt, on 17, 000 images correctly labelled to match more than 200 genetic syndromes. The team then asked the AI to identify potential genetic disorders from a further 502 photos of people with such conditions. It included the correct answer 91 per cent of the time.
Gurovich and his team also tested the neural network’s ability to distinguish between the different genetic mutations (变异) that can lead to the same syndrome. They used photographs of people with Noonan syndrome, which can result from mutations in any one of five genes. DeepGestalt correctly identified the genetic source of the physical appearance 64 per cent of the time. It’s clearly not perfect, but it’s still much better than humans are at trying to do this.
As the system makes its assessments, the facial regions that were most helpful in the determination are highlighted and made available for doctors to view. This helps them to understand the relationships between genetic make-up and physical appearance.
The fact that the diagnosis is based on a simple photograph raises questions about privacy. If faces can reveal details about genetics, then employers and insurance providers could, in principle. secretly use such techniques to discriminate against people who have a high probability of having certain disorders. However, Gurovich says the tool will only be available for use by clinicians (临床医生). Clinically this technology can help narrow down the search space of diagnosis and then confirm through checking genetic markers. Besides, it could perhaps add means of finding other people with the disease and, in turn, help find new treatments or cures.
28. What can we know about DeepGestalt?
A. It can be trained to correctly label the images of people.
B. It can correctly identify genetic mutations 91% of the time.
C. It is built to look at faces and identify genetic disorders.
D It is much better than humans at trying to identify physical appearance.
29. Why are certain facial regions highlighted in the assessment process?
A. To help confirm the diagnosis. B. To help make the system more understandable.
C. To help the system quickly recognize people . D. To help identify a condition and make a diagnosis.
30. What’s the best title of this text?
A. Tricky facial features B. Faces let AI spot genetic disorders
C. Facial features give you away to doctors D. DeepGestalt: a magic cure for genetic syndromes
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards the technology?
A. Positive. B. Neutral. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.

An adult African elephant consumes about 223 liters of water and 3,080 pounds of roots, grass and fruit daily. That’s like having 634 cans of soda and 1,200 hamburgers every day. This keeps them moving thousands of miles across Africa each year. Elephants usually migrate between March and May. Females live in groups with their children, and quickly run out of the food supply. They hit the road in search of food. Male elephants live alone, so they don’t use resources as quickly as the females. Instead, they migrate during their mating cycle. When the females pack their trunks, so do the males.
During migration, elephants face short water supplies and extremely high temperatures. But people are their number-one problem. Poachers (偷猎者) kill 35,000 elephants each year for ivory. Many African farmers build fences (栅栏) to protect crops and cattle, which might block regular migration paths. Traffic roads affect elephant migration, too. During one study of 28 elephants in Central Africa, only one female crossed an unprotected road.
Scientists, wildlife organizations and governments cooperate to find solutions for Africa’s elephants. “To unlock the secret of where elephants move and how they move, we place collars (项圈) with a satellite unit inside,” Dr. Michael Chase says. GPS collars help map which routes elephants use most so that countries can establish protected elephant passages.
Locals come in as well. James Isiche, East Africa Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare says, “We have got the community on our side by a project; they’ve agreed to partner with us to conserve elephants.” The local community run wildlife parks to attract tourists. “This project helps us take care of both the wildlife and our cows,” says Sikira, a tribal elder in Maasai, Kenya. Protecting elephant migration routes allows these gentle giants to survive.
32. What can we learn about the elephants from paragraph 1?
A. They show an interest in hamburgers.
B. They move south to survive the cold.
C. They migrate for different reasons.
D. Females live shorter for food shortage.
33. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A. Results of poaching. B. Reasons for killing elephants.
C. Difficulties in migrating. D. Efforts to protect migration paths.
34. Why are collars applied by scientists?
A. To discover the secret of migration.
B. To track elephants with technology.
C. To identify the population of elephants.
D. To explore a new route for migration.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Say No to Ivory B. A Journey in Africa
C. Ready for the Move D. Technology in Migration

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

C. Improve the quality of the device. D. Commercialize more research projects.
27 Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. New technology turns smartphones into RFID readers
B. Smartphones need to be equipped with software updates
C. RFID readers obtain new chips and have new functions
D. Backscatter communication makes the best of smartphones

C
D. It is much better than humans at trying to identify physical appearance.
29. Why are certain facial regions highlighted in the assessment process?
A. To help confirm the diagnosis. B. To help make the system more understandable.
C. To help the system quickly recognize people . D. To help identify a condition and make a diagnosis.
