Let’s explore the splendid botanic gardens of the world.
Royal Botanic Garden, London, England
The Royal Botanic Garden is thought to be the largest one in the world, a 121-hectare site on the edge of London, home to the world’s biggest collection of living plants and more than 8.5 million preserved plant specimens (标本). Its mission is to protect plants for the future of all life on Earth. Designed by artist Wolfgang Buttress, it features a thousand LEDs that light up and create a musical piece!
Jardim Botanico do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The garden stands as a symbol of Brazil’s rich diversity of wildlife, containing over 6,000 species of tropical plants and trees. 40 percent of the site is farmed; the rest is Atlantic Forest spreading up the mountains. It is home to Capuchin monkeys, along with over 140 species of birds, including toucans and white-necked hawks.
Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier, France
The garden was originally intended for the medical education of student doctors. Lost and remade more than once over the centuries, it does not reduce the importance of either the site or the vision of those who have created it, still faithful to its early purpose as a teaching garden.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, South Africa
Its collection of more than 7,000 species mainly consists of local plants in southern Africa. Famous for its Protea Garden, it also has a Medicinal Garden, focusing on African and native uses of plants. Today, the garden’s primary concern is to “defend the exploration, conservation and appreciation of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all South Africans.”

A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. An instructor read out numbers — 74,470, 70,809, 98,402 — and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.
The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus(算盘). Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work through the problems.
From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads, so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My typical solution was avoidance, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.
Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry. But the practice brought my numerical fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus. Confidence grows easily in the device, and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and outcomes appear to move in step.
My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once baffled her, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teacher. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence.
24.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To prove the difficulty of math. B.To introduce the topic of the abacus.
C.To show the high intelligence of Stevenson. D.To stress the importance of abacus learning.
25.What do we know about the author from paragraph 3?
A.He was weak in math. B.He was good at computer.
C.He regarded math as useful. D.He had a close relationship with kids.
26.What does the author realize from his learning experience?
A.Knowledge starts with practice. B.It’s never too late to learn.
C.Faith can move mountains. D.Practice makes perfect.
27.What does the underlined word “baffled” in the last paragraph mean?
A.excited. B.inspired. C.defeated. D.interested.

Cats communicate a variety of messages using cat body language. Examples include arching (弓起) their backs as a signal of fear or attack, and slowly blinking (眨) their eyes to signal relaxation. Mouth open and no teeth showed suggests a feeling of playfulness. A cat which chooses to lie on its back shows happiness, trust and comfort. Cats show dissatisfaction by moving their ears back, equal to a human frown.
As is the case with dogs, a twitching (抽动) tail can mean a little anger while a tail held high suggests confidence. Cats will twitch their tails when hunting or angry, while larger twitching suggests displeasure. They may also twitch their tails when playing. A tail held high is a sign of happiness, or can be used as a greeting towards humans or other cats (usually close relatives) while half-raised shows less pleasure, and unhappiness is expressed with a tail held low.
Some characteristic signals, however, are often misunderstood. It is important to keep in mind that each cat may show its feelings with different body language. For instance, a cat rubbing its body along an arm or leg of its owner is not only a way in which to attract attention and, perhaps, a way to ask for food; it is also a way of “marking” its owner as its own. Usually a cat with its tail held high and twitching shows excitement, but this is often mistaken for anger.
Many people fail or are too slow to understand the silent body language of cats. And they may have the false impression that cats are cold-hearted, unfaithful or not clever. To understand cats, people must observe a cat closely and learn what its body signals tell them.
28. Which cat body language shows that a cat is relaxed?
A. Lying on its stomach. B. Blinking its eyes slowly.
C. Holding its tail high. D. Moving its ears back.
29. According to the passage, a cat will twitch its tail EXCEPT ____.
A. when it feels sleepy B. when it is hunting
C. when it feels angry D. when it is playing
30. How many meanings does a cat’s rubbing its body along its owner have?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
31. The last paragraph intends to tell us ____.
A. many people often have wrong opinions on cats
B. it is not easy to understand cats’ body language
C. every cat has its own special body language
D. we should learn more about cats’ body language
D
Many cities in the United States could grow their own food locally, raising enough crops and cattle to meet the needs of all residents. This is the finding of an interesting new modeling study from Tufts University, which analyzed the potential for local food production in 378 areas across the US and expected food production.
The researchers found that cities in the Northwest in the United States had the greatest potential to raise their own food. Cities along the Eastern seaside and in the Southwest had the least potential and would not be able to meet all their own needs of diet, even if every acre(亩) of agricultural land was used for food production. This makes sense, as many of the cities are coastal and lack room for agricultural spreading.
The study revealed that the United States have a surplus (多余的) of agricultural land for feeding the domestic (国内的) population. Currently, some land is used to raise export crops, but a focus on local food production would start a conversation about how that land gets used. In the words of Peters, lead author and associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts, “It would be important to make sure policies for supporting local or regional food production benefit conservation and create opportunities for farmers to adopt more sustainable (可持续的) practices. Policies should also recognize the ability of the natural resources in a given local or region and consider the supply chain, including ability for food processing and storage.”
Although it’s a far cry from the current reality, it is a nice thought to imagine cities surrounded by food production operations that transport freshly harvested food to nearby homes, and then make use of the leftover food to fertilize fields and generate heat for greenhouses.
32. The cities along the Eastern seaside fail to provide enough food because ________.
A. citizens are unwilling to grow crops
B. the methods of food production are wrong
C. they don’t have enough land to grow crops
D. their climate limits the agricultural production
33. What will the focus on local food production lead to?
A. More job opportunities for citizens.
B. More specific policies about using land.
C. Conversations with the local government.
D. A discussion on how to make use of land.
34. In which section can we read this text in a newspaper?
A. Agriculture. B. Entertainment. C. Lifestyle. D. Sport.
35 What is the best title of this text?
A. The US Government Stops Wasting Food
B. Many Cities in the US Can Grow Their Own Food
C. Cities Learn to Grow Food From the Villages
D. Farmers Have More Chances to Be Employed

Last Saturday,David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy about eight years old. When David passed them,he heard the woman yell "How stupid you are!You are good at nothing."David stopped and looked at the little boy.The boy said nothing. He just stood there looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs.Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school,David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by other students. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day,in an English writing class,Mrs.Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter for the novel after they finished reading the book.A few days later,David handed in his story. He didn't give it much thought. But the next day,to his surprise,he read a very good comment:well done.
When David read that,he almost shed tears. He never expected to be praised one day.He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home,he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs.Brown the next morning. And again he was praised.
David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs.Brown to read them and correct them for him.Mrs.Brown always corrected the mistakes David had made and gave him good suggestions. One year later,David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it.He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence.He became confident and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and he kept writing.Several years after graduating from college,he had his first book published. With some more books coming out,he became a famous writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs.Brown's encouragement.Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
