Peterley Manor Farm in the Chiltern Hills has moved a long way from conventional
farming.Roger Brill,a fourth-generation farmer,and his wife,Jane,took over a rundown
turkey farm in 1982 and started growing and selling fruits and vegetables. Now,their 40-acre
farm features a "wild spa"with outdoor ice baths,yoga in a tent,and a cafe in a tractor
garage.Surprisingly,their farm's produce,including Christmas trees and apple juice,makes
up less than a tenth of their income last year.
"Instagram has changed everything,"according to Katy Brill, who took over the farm
from her parents in 2014.Novel experiences and scenic backdrops do very well on social
media platforms.Besides the spa,the farm also offers fitness camps,an outdoor cinema, and
play areas for kids, all with beautiful views. They're even planning a nature-based nursery.
Branching out has become normal for modern farmers.Nearly 70%of farms in
England are exploring new business.Consumer-focused services in particular are growing
fast.Social-media use and a shift towards sustainability and wellness have increased the
demand for farm experiences.Farm shops are selling more than before. And farms across
Britain outperformed hotels as wedding venues (in 2023,according to data from
Hitched,a wedding-planning website.
The decision to diversify may not be new:farmers have sought alternative income for
decades. But the need has become more urgent.Farms have been under pressure by huge
rises in energy costs and higher labor costs.Increasingly unpredictable weather, including
record amounts of rainfall, has made harvests less reliable.
Diversification brings new opportunities for struggling farms, but adapting to consumer
demands leaves them exposed to wider economic cycles. It also requires them to find
workers with new skills. In one respect, though, things are not different from old-fashioned
farming,“The hospitality(服务)business is extremely difficult,”says Ms Brill.“If's hard
work and long hours.”
24.What has Roger Brill's farm been transformed into?
A.A traditional farm selling fruits.
B.A farm with diversified offerings.
C.A special spa and wellness center.
D.A centre providing entertainments.

26.What does the underlined phrase "branching out"in Para 3 mean?
A.Narrowing.
B.Extending.
C.Simplifying.

27.What's the passage mainly about?
A.New-normal farm operations.
B.Great pressure on farm owners.

The fascinating phenomenon of mirroring behavior, such as nodding and yawning,
weaves an invisible thread that bonds us together in our daily interactions, often without our
conscious awareness. This phenomenon is activated by mirror neurons (in our
brains, which fire when we perform an action and when we observe someone else doing the
same.Mirroring is not just a physical act;it includes verbal and emotional aspects as well.
The evolutionary (advantages of mirroring are evident in how it enabled our
ancestors to learn, bond, and avoid danger. It's a fundamental part of social cognition, crucial
for child development, and varies across cultures, influencing social norms and
interactions. In therapeutic (setting, mirroring is used to build trust and
connection.Mirroring strengthens personal and professional relationships. It improves
communication and can boost success in sales and negotiations.By slightly mirroring a
customer's body language or speech patterns, you can create a sense of harmony and
agreement.
With practice,we can learn to use mirroring intentionally to build better relationships
and communicate more effectively. However,it must be used with care and
sincerity.Cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings if mirroring norms are not
respected. What's considered polite mirroring in one culture might be seen as disrespectful
in another. It's like trying to do the cha-cha at a square dance. There's also the dark side of
mirroring. Some people might use mirroring techniques to do bad things on purpose. It's like
a wolf in sheep's clothing, using our natural tendency against us.
Remember, mirroring is our ability to understand and empathize (with

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry has recently celebrated a remarkable instance of artificial
intelligence (AI)aiding humankind, particularly in the field of protein structure discovery.
Proteins, the central players in biological processes, are crucial for life's chemical
reactions,functioning as hormones,signals,antibodies,and tissue (builders.They
consist of amino acid chains(氨基酸序列)that fold into unique structures, controlling
their interactions with other molecules ()But understanding their structure was a
worrying task until recently.
The traditional method of X-ray crystallography, which won John Kendrew and Max
Perutz the 1962 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was time-consuming.However,the 2023 Nobel
Prize in Chemistry recognized a breakthrough with the work of David Baker,Demis

networks to identify patterns in vast amounts of data. The system was trained on the vast
information in databases of all known protein structures and amino acid chains.AlphaFold
has predicted more than 200 million protein structures, covering nearly all proteins known to
science.
The ability to predict protein structures is a game-changer for drug and vaccine
development,as it provides insights into how proteins look and behave.AlphaFold's
predictions have already sped up biomedical research,as exemplified by the search for a
malaria vaccine.AlphaFold's accurate structure prediction of a key surface protein enabled
researchers to design a vaccine, advancing the research from fundamental science to
preclinical and clinical development stages.
While AI is not always correct, its capabilities are improving. The AlphaFold project is
expanding to include interactions between proteins and other biomedical structures.AI's
potential risks must be addressed, but for now,AlphaFold demonstrates AI's power to
strengthen human knowledge for the betterment of society.

Text 1
M: Mia, it’s going to be a long flight. Let’s go and buy some snacks.
W: I’ve got some. How about picking each other a book instead?
M: Great idea!
Text 2
M: I don’t know too much about social application. However, this pair of VR glasses really interests me!
W: Sure, Ryan. This new form of video communication will be very useful!
Text 3
M: Would you like anything for your birthday? Your mom will make a cake. How about a pretty dress?
W: There’s a company that gives away free trees, and we can plant them at places on the list they offered. I’d prefer that. We all need to help save the planet.
Text 4
W: Hey, Matt. Will you be free tonight?
M: No. I’m leaving for the weekend, Beth. Plus, we have Monday off. So, I’ll return home that night.
W: Fine. I’ll see you in school the day after that.
Text 5
M: As one of the world’s most successful recording artists, where do your ideas come from?
W: I’m often inspired by the beauty of nature. For example, I recently wrote a song that came to me while I was standing on a beach, watching the sun come up.
Text 6
W: Honey, it’s finally weekend. What do you want to do today?
M: I’ve been stuck inside the office all week, and I really need some fresh air.
W: Yeah, me too. We could have a picnic.
M: Let’s do it. You go make some food. I’ll prepare some drinks.
W: Perfect.
Text 7
W: Jack, have you heard about our school’s new project — Sports Week?
M: Yes. Do you have any ideas? We should hurry up because the project will start next week.
W: What do you think about inviting famous athletes to meet with local students? Athletes would tell their stories and give some interviews.
M: Personally, I think we should invite our town leaders instead. Inviting famous athletes or actors will cost a lot. We should also arrange some kind of mini-Olympics on our playground.
W: Yeah. That’s a great idea! Oh, I have to go. I need to bring these newspapers to the teachers’ office. Let’s talk about our ideas on our way home together. Bye!
Text 8
W: What were you doing just now? What did those gestures mean?
M: Oh, I was just telling my friend to meet me for lunch in 20 minutes.
W: Oh, I got it. So, you were sending him secret hand signals.
M: Yeah. We got the idea from an action movie last night and decided to try it out for fun. I thought it was cool to use hand gestures to communicate.
W: Yeah. I’ve been taking acting classes, and right now we’re learning how to use body languages to express ourselves.
M: Wow, that’s cool. So…you mean you’re not allowed to talk, right?
W: Right.
M: That reminds me of those Charlie Chaplin movies. I guess it was not easy for him.
W: He was a real master. Everyone in my class loves his movies.
Text 9
M: Ladies and gentlemen, my next guest is a star of stage and screen, Tasmin Blake!
W: Hi, John. Thanks for having me.
M: You’ve been very busy since last time you were on the show.
W: When was that? A year ago?
M: Almost two. Tasmin, tell us something about the latest project you are working on.
W: OK. I’m directing and starring in my own TV show.
M: Wow, please tell us more about that.
W: Well, it’s based on a book called House of Midnight. My production company bought the rights six years ago.
M: That’s a long time.
W: I know, and since then we’ve been slowly writing the play and looking for a channel for it.
M: And it’s going to be shown on Channel One?
W: Yes! I’m very excited to work with them.
Text 10
M: I’m Jack from Shanghai, reporting from the opening of “Culture and Ceremony: Bronze (青铜) in Ancient China”, a new exhibition at the British Museum in London. Visitors have come to admire fantastic treasures from the National Museum of China in Beijing. As part of an exchange program, we’ve brought some of our best bronze pieces to put on display. Bronze has an important place in Chinese history. The beautiful and detailed designs are a reflection of the wisdom and artistic talent of our ancestors.
The program began with the British Museum’s exhibition in Beijing in 2015. The aim is to promote cultural exchange between nations. Although there are a lot of bronze pieces to see here, it’s a small selection of what the National Museum of China has. We can see visitors are amazed by the long-standing culture of ancient China. We hope this taste will encourage more people to visit Beijing in the future!
The exhibition runs for six months. Although the British Museum is free, tickets are necessary for this special exhibition to control visitor numbers. You can buy tickets online, and I suggest you do it quickly as they’re selling fast!

第二节 (满分 25 分)
Once upon a time in a small village in ancient China, there lived a young man named Kuang Heng. He had a great thirst for knowledge, but his family was too poor to afford a lamp for him to study at night.
One evening, as he sat in the dark, he noticed a faint glow of light seeping through a crack in the wall, which came from the lamp of his neighbor. Kuang Heng’s eyes lit up with an idea. He carefully dug a small hole in the wall, just large enough to let in a beam of light. From that day forward, Kuang Heng would huddle by the hole in the wall, using the stolen light to read his books and study late into the night. In this way, he taught himself many ancient classic books.
The story of Kuang Heng has been passed down through generations, reminding us all that where there is a will, there is always a way to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals.
