The quote is from one of Aristotle’s most important and influential works, Nicomachean Ethics尼各马可伦理学, which is thought to be based on his lecture notes at the Lyceum(书院). In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle argues that in order to become a good person, one must start by learning good habits. However, good habits are not enough, as they require no thought or choice. Ultimately, a person must choose to be good, and show that goodness through the practical choices he or she makes in daily life.

Group discussion
What kind of person do you think Adam is? Why?
(Adam appears to be hard-working and wants to get ahead in life. I know this because he thought carefully about which courses and extra-curricular activities to take, and thought hard about his future. He is also a kind person, because he joined a volunteer club.)
Post-reading
What are some differences between Adam’s school life and your school life?
(I don’t have to choose my own courses. All day, I am in the same classroom with my classmates, and we all study the same courses.)

Answer the questions
3 What club did Adam join? What do students do in this club?
A volunteer club. Students work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community.
Cultural Note
Soup kitchens are common in North America. They exist to provide food for homeless or poor people. Even though they are called soup kitchens, many no longer serve soup. They serve food that is like that eaten in many people’s homes.
