Over the last 200 years railway technology has developed to deal with cities, mountains, deep mines and some of the world’s most extreme climates. Here’s a selection of unusual railways that break the rules in order to reach the places other trains can’t.
Wuppertal Schwebebahn, Germany
Built to link several industrial towns along the narrow, twisting valley (山谷) in North Germany, the suspended (悬挂的) railway was perfectly suited to its environment. Completed in 1901, it was very important in the growth of the towns, which eventually became the city of Wuppertal in 1929. It might look unusual to visitors, but to the people of Wuppertal, it’s the backbone of the city’s transport network.
Stoosbahn, Switzerland
Current holder of the record for the world’s steepest (陡峭的) public railway, Switzerland’s Stoosbahn opened in December 2017, and has become a global tourist attraction. It is far more than just a joyride though, it is a significant lifeline for the car-free village of Stoos, which sits high on a mountain in the south of Zürich.
Hythe Pier Railway, England
Pier railways were an attraction at several British seaside resorts in the 19th century. Most were built for pleasure, usually to save visitors a long walk back to shore. Hythe Pier Railway, on the south coast of England, has always been a little different, though. It provides a unique link between dry land and the Hythe Ferry, which has carried people to and from across Southampton Water since the Middle Ages. The current pier opened in 1881 and a 2,100-foot railway was added in 1909.
Chongqing Monorail (单轨列车), China
Chongqing in China is home to the world’s longest monorail system, carrying millions of passengers a year on two lines. At just over 34 miles, Line 3 is also the world’s longest single monorail line with an annual ridership of around 250 million. Opened between 2005 and 2016, the two lines can deal with steep climbs. Famously, one section of Line 2 passes through the heart of a high-rise apartment block.

Grace Go’s award-winning podcast (播客) starts with her favorite comfort food, budae jjigae (韩式浓汤火锅), which she describes as “ham, sausage, spam, a packet of instant noodles all cooked in meat soup topped with American cheese”.
Grace’s podcast, which explores her relationship with budae jjigae and her own body, has won the Best Mental Health Podcast Prize. Her podcast is called Discomfort Food.
With the sound of her mom’s budae jjigae sizzling in a metal pot, all recorded on her phone, Grace invites listeners into her Korean American family’s kitchen, and into her own journey with mental health.
In her podcast, Grace plays recordings of her family members’ opinions on her body, expressed in both English and Korean. “Grace, I think you gained weight,” says one person. Others tell her to stop eating because she’s getting bigger. These opinions took a serious toll on her health and happiness. “For years, I didn’t eat properly, and it got to a point where I completely cut out foods I thought were bad for me, such as my favorite, budae jjigae,” she explains. “Then finally, in November of 2021, I suffered from an eating disorder (紊乱).”
In her podcast, Grace also researches mental health in Asian American communities and interviews experts like Joann Kim, the family youth program manager at the Korean Community Service Center near Grace’s home. Joann helped Grace on her road to recovery. In the podcast, Joann explains that there’s a common group mentality (心态) that’s often found in Korean immigrant (移民) communities. “And that makes us really tied to what other people think about us,” says Joann.
Even with Joann’s help, it took Grace over two years to feel comfortable asking her mom to make her favorite dinner, budae jjigae.
“I ate the entire pot basically all by myself, and for the first time in a really long time,” Grace recalls. “It didn’t really feel like I was doing something bad. I was doing something good for myself.”
26. What does Grace really want to show in her podcast?
A. Her mental recovery journey. B. Her favorite food.
C. Her Korean American family. D. The Korean group mentality.
27. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Grace’s bad relationships with her family. B. Grace’s concern about her weight.
C. The cause of Grace’s eating disorder. D. The description of Grace’s lifestyle.
28. What does the underlined phrase “took a serious toll on” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Do justice to. B. Bring an end to.
C. Take advantage of. D. Have a bad effect on.
29. What is Joann’s attitude towards group mentality in Korean immigrant communities?
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
30. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Grace doesn’t care about her health. B. Mother is good at cooking.
C. Grace has recovered mentally. D. Mother has changed Grace’s lifestyle.
C
Your legs may help you get around, but what if they could also help you smell out a snack? That’s a trick achieved by a very strange fish called the sea robin. The fish, which lives on the seafloor, has an unusual appearance, with wing-like fins and leg-like things that it uses not only to move around quickly but also for “tasting” the sea floor to find prey (猎物) hidden in the sand, researchers have found.
Sea robins are known to use six leg-like structures to walk across the sea floor and even turn over shellfish in a hunt for prey. Researchers have long questioned if their legs could also help the fish to discover food in others ways. A series of researches have been carried out, and scientists in the Marine Biological Laboratory have released two studies uncovering the genes that result in the sea robins’ legs and also how such legs are used.
Writing in the journal Current Biology, the team report how they placed individual sea robins into tanks containing water and sand. Hidden in the sand were either shellfish, capsules containing shellfish extract, or capsules containing seawater.
The team found that a kind of sea robins regularly turned up all of the prey-related items but not the seawater capsules.
Further work made it clear that nerves (神经) in the legs of these fish fired when the legs sensed various food-related materials, while the sea robins could find the hidden capsules containing such materials.
The team discovered that the ability of the fish to find prey decreased with the depth at which the prey was hidden, as would be expected if the sea robins were using their legs to sense something released by the prey. In addition, the researchers found that the legs of these sea robins were covered in small bumps similar to those seen on a human tongue, and the bumps could taste things. The researchers suggest that the bumps could increase both touch and sensitivity.
31. What do we know about sea robins in paragraph 1?
A. They are ugly-looking sea life. B. They are good at playing tricks.
C. They hunt for food using legs. D. They live on the surface of the sea.
32. Why did the scientists in the Marine Biological Laboratory do the two studies?
A. To offer a suggestion. B. To clear up doubts.
C. To give a reason. D. To introduce an idea.
33. How did the scientists carry out the study?
A. By examining the nerves in sea robins’ legs.
B. By observing different items hidden in the sand.
C. By putting individual sea robins into different tanks.
D. By comparing sea robins’ responses to different items.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Bumps make sea robins more sensitive to the prey.
B. Bumps enable sea robins to touch prey far away.
C. Sea robins have the same bumps as a human tongue does.
D. Sea robins can explore prey in the deep ocean easily.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Strange Fish, Unusual Appearance Shown B. Amazing Fish, Unique Trick Ahead
C. Crazy Fish, Special Movement Unlocked D. Mysterious Fish, Hunting Secrets Out

However, once when I took my dog, phillip, into a pet shop, I noticed that my dog tried to bite the owner. IT happens all the time. The owner told me, as you can imagine, that really put me off. To cut a long story short, by the end of the school year, I decided to become a reporter. That's my story.

A 27. C 28. D 29. B 30. C
根据第二段中“Grace’s podcast, which explores her relationship with budae jjigae and her own body, has won the Best Mental Health Podcast Prize. Her podcast is called Discomfort Food.(格雷斯的播客探讨了她与韩式浓汤火锅及自身身体的关系,该播客赢得了最佳心理健康播客奖。她的播客名为《Discomfort Food》)”可知,Grace在播客中真正想展示的是她的心理恢复之旅。故选A。
根据第四段中“In her podcast, Grace plays recordings of her family members’ opinions on her body, expressed in both English and Korean. “Grace, I think you gained weight,” says one person. Others tell her to stop eating because she’s getting bigger.(在她的播客中,格雷斯播放了家人对她身体的看法录音,这些录音既有英文的也有韩文的。“格蕾丝,我觉得你长胖了,”一个人说。其他人告诉她不要再吃东西了,因为她块头越来越大了)”及““For years, I didn’t eat properly, and it got to a point where I completely cut out foods I thought were bad for me, such as my favorite, budae jjigae,” she explains. “Then finally, in November of 2021, I suffered from an eating disorder (紊乱).”(“多年来,我没有正常进食,甚至到了完全排除那些我认为对我有害的食物的程度,比如我最喜欢的韩式浓汤火锅,”她解释说。“最终,在2021年11月,我患上了饮食紊乱。”)”可知,第四段主要讲述了Grace患上饮食紊乱症的原因,即家人对她体重的评论导致她饮食不当并最终患上饮食紊乱症。故选C。
【28题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线部分所在句子及后文“These opinions took a serious toll on her health and happiness. “For years, I didn’t eat properly, and it got to a point where I completely cut out foods I thought were bad for me, such as my favorite, budae jjigae,” she explains. “Then finally, in November of 2021, I suffered from an outing disorder (紊乱).”(这些意见took a serious toll on她的健康和幸福。“多年来,我没有正常进食,甚至到了完全排除那些我认为对我有害的食物的程度,比如我最喜欢的韩式浓汤火锅,”她解释说。“最终,在2021年11月,我患上了饮食紊乱。”)”可推知,这些意见对她的健康和幸福感产生了严重的负面影响,导致她患上饮食紊乱。因此猜测took a serious toll on的意思是“对……产生严重影响”,与选项D“Have a bad effect on(对……有坏影响)”意思相近。故选D。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“In the podcast, Joann explains that there’s a common group mentality (心态) that’s often found in Korean immigrant (移民) communities. ‘And that makes us really tied to what other people think about us,’ says Joann.(在播客中,乔安解释说,在韩国移民社区中经常发现一种共同的群体心态。“这让我们真的很在意别人对我们的看法,”乔安说)”可知,Joann认为这种群体心态使得人们非常在意别人对自己的看法,以及结合后文Grace的心理恢复历程可以推断出,Joann对韩国移民社区中的群体心态持否定态度。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后两段“Even with Joann’s help, it took Grace over two years to feel comfortable asking her mom to make her favorite dinner, budae jjigae.(即使有乔安的帮助,格雷斯还是花了两年多的时间才鼓起勇气请她妈妈做她最喜欢的晚餐——韩式浓汤火锅)”以及“I ate the entire pot basically all by myself, and for the first time in a really long time, it didn’t really feel like I was doing something bad. I was doing something good for myself.(“我几乎是自己吃完整个锅的,这是很长一段时间以来的第一次,”格雷斯回忆说。“这并不像是在做坏事,而是在为自己做好事。”)”可知,Grace能够再次享受她喜欢的食物,并且没有感到内疚,由此推知,Grace在心理上已经恢复了。故选C。
Mysterious Fish, Hunting Secrets Out
C 32. B 33. D 34. A 35. D

A series of researches have been carried out, and scientists in the Marine Biological Laboratory have released two studies uncovering the genes that result in the sea robins’ legs and also how such legs are used.(研究人员长期以来一直怀疑它们的腿是否也能帮助鱼类以其他方式寻找食物。

根据第一段“Your legs may help you get around, but what if they could also help you smell out a snack? That’s a trick achieved by a very strange fish called the sea robin. The fish, which lives on the seafloor, has an unusual appearance, with wing-like fins and leg-like things that it uses not only to move around quickly but also for “tasting” the sea floor to find prey (猎物) hidden in the sand, researchers have found.(你的腿可以帮助你四处走动,但如果它们也能帮助你闻出零食呢?

根据空格前的句子“Losing weight is a popular fitness goal: more than half of Americans list it as important to them.(减肥是一个流行的健身目标:超过一半的美国人将其列为重要目标)”可知,超过一半的美国人将减肥列为重要目标。
而空格前的句子“Certain foods give short “bursts” of energy and satisfaction, but leave you hungry before your next meal.(某些食物会给你短暂的能量和满足感,但会让你在下一餐之前感到饥饿)”提到的是给你短暂的能量和满足感的事物。 所以,G项“Instead of these foods, focus on other choices that offer long-term satisfaction.(专注于其他提供长期满足感的选择,而不是这些食物)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选G项。
根据空格后的句子“You’ re more likely to eat junk food like hot dog and fried chicken when you’ re tired out.(当你累的时候,你更有可能吃像热狗和炸鸡这样的垃圾食品)”可知,当你累的时候,更容易吃些垃圾食品,也就是说你很难控制自己的食欲,所以,A项“It’s also hard to control desires for food.(对食物的欲望也很难控制)”填入空格处和下文是顺接关系,符合下文的困倦容易导致垃圾食品摄入。故选A项。
根据下文的内容“Make an effort to spend time with people who have a healthy lifestyle, like walking, sports, cycling, nutritious home cooking and so on. Limit your time with people who have unhealthy hobbies like eating junk food, binge-drinking, and watching hour after hour of television.(努力花时间和有健康生活方式的人在一起,比如散步、运动、骑自行车、做有营养的家常菜等等。少和那些有不健康嗜好的人呆在一起,比如吃垃圾食品、酗酒、一小时一小时看电视)”可知,该部分主要是建议你和那些有健康生活方式的人在一起,因为他们可以为你的减肥提供支持。所以,B项“Find a fitness-positive support network.(找到一个积极健身的支持网络)”可以作为该部分的主题句填入空格处。故选B项。
【40题详解】
根据该部分的主题句“Start recording your weight.(开始记录你的体重)”和空格后的句子“If the numbers start to go up, you’ll know that it’s time to reconsider your habits.(如果数字开始上升,你就知道是时候重新考虑你的习惯了)”可知,空格处的句子应该是说记录体重的作用。所以D项“Keeping a record of your weight really works.(记录你的体重真的很有效)”填入空格处,符合追踪体重变化的建议。故选D项。

To start with, the activity will start with an opening ceremony. Then various stands will be put up for students to buy things they like. Finally, each class will donate the money to the charity to help those in need. And you are welcome to buy something you love or you can put up a stand to sell something.
Your presence is highly anticipated!
Yours sincerely
Li Hua
