Travel WiFi is a global company with a simple mission: to keep you connected to the Internet while traveling. They do this by providing WiFi hotspot devices (for rent or purchase) that can be used on 6 different continents.
About the WiFi devices
The Pocket Travel WiFi devices are the size and shape of a small smartphone. The standard Hotspot Rental and the Sapphire 2 (for purchase) share a similar design with one mini-USB charging port. However, it’s important to note that these devices are not waterproof. When fully charged, they should last around 12 hours with fairly regular WiFi use. Additionally, the Sapphire 2 model features indicator lights displaying signal strength and battery life.
Renting VS Buying the travel WiFi device
The cost of purchasing a travel WiFi device is $89 — $109, and then you pay on top of that for data packages ($29.9 for 20 GB in a month). Most frequent travelers buy their own device for convenience.
The rental price is based on the total number of days that you’ll keep the device and how much data you want to use each day. Daily rents range from $6.9 for 1 GB, $12.9 for 2 GB to $16.9 for 3 GB. Week pass ($45.9) with no data limit is also a good choice for short-term travelers.
1. What is an advantage of the travel WiFi device?
A. It is resistant to water. B. It is quick to charge.
C. It is convenient to carry. D. It is excellent in signal.
2. For a 7-day UK trip what’s the minimum rent for a WiFi device?
A. $6.9. B. $29.9. C. $45.9. D. $48.3.
3. Who is most likely to show interest in the device?
A. A person who will travel abroad.
B. A diver who is training off the coast.
C. A student who likes surfing the Internet.
D. A doctor who needs the latest information.
B
If you look around your city, you might spot girls wearing hanfu in subways or people wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters on the streets. A new trend is taking hold in China — guochao, or “China chic”
The term characterizes the rise of China’s native fashion trends. It has expanded the concept of “Made in China”, which has been recognized as the representation of Chinese culture and aesthetics (美学) offered by homegrown Chinese brands.
China-chic came into the spotlight in 2018. Before that, big-name foreign companies, such as NIKE, ADIDAS and PUMA, dominated the world market. But that year, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning changed things up. During the 2018 New York Fashion Week, Li-Ning introduced its Taoism-inspired Wu Dao collection. The collection not only had a trendy look, but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. It immediately grabbed attention at home and abroad. As a result, the company recorded 20 percent profit growth in 2018, marking the first time the brand’s revenue had hit the 10-billion-yuan mark since its founding.
The trend to embrace domestic brands has since spread rapidly to various sectors and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles. For example, White Rabbit, whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many, launched its perfume and lip balm. “We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want to share,” said Shen Qinfeng, the company’s marketing manager.
“Now, the guochao trend is moving to the next stage, where its success will rely. First and foremost, on gaining cultural confidence rather than Western recognition.” according to Kerra Zhou, founder of brand strategy consultancy Kerrisma. No matter how the guochao trend develops, there’s one thing that won’t change: Behind the craze is people’s positive attitude toward the country’s development and their recognition of growing confidence in national culture, added Zhou.
4. What’s the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce a new trend in China. B. To highlight the popularity of guochao.
C. To describe a common scene on the street. D. To show Chinese brands beat foreign companies.
5. Which of the following statements about guochao is correct?
A. Li-Ning stimulated the development of guochao.
B. Guochao is a new trend popular throughout the world.
C. Guochao refers to people’s preference for ancient culture.
D. It’s before 2018 that guochao had received great attention.
6. Why did Li-Ning get so much attention during the 2018 New York Fashion Week?
A. It took the lead in the similar brands.
B. It adopted Western design in its sportswear.
C. Its revenue hit the 10-billion-yuan mark that year.
D. Its products followed the trend and reflected Chinese elements.
7. What may Kerra Zhou agree with?
A. Chinese is still following the western trend.
B. Guochao’s success relies on western recognition.
C. National pride arouses the passion for guochao.
D. Cultural awareness is the key to winning market share.
C
How’s this for a coincidence (巧合)? Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born in the same year, on the same day: Feb. 12, 1809. Although people hardly think of them together, yet we want to say that they belong together. It’s not just because they were both great men, and not because they happen to live at the same time. Rather, it’s because the scientist and the politician each started a revolution that changed the world.
They were both revolutionaries in the sense that both men changed the realities when they were born. They seem and sound modern to us, because the world they left behind them is more or less the one we still live in. So, considering the joint greatness of their contributions and the coincidence of their birthdays ---- it is hard to wonder: who was the greatest man? It’s an apples and oranges--- or Superman vs. Santa---comparison. But if you limit the question to influence, very quickly the balance tips in Lincoln’s favor.
As great as his book on evolution is, it does no harm to remember that Darwin hurried to publish The Origin of Species because he thought he was about to be scooped (抢先) by his fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. Lincoln, however, is unique. True, his election as the president did cause the recession (衰退) and the war, but that war seems certain to happen---not a question of if but when. Certainly we know what happened after he was murdered: Reconstruction was organized and then abandoned, leaving the issue of racial (种族的) equality unsolved for another century.
Surely we should not deny Darwin’s accomplishment. But their same birthdays gave us a great opportunity to observe these men of their time.
8. Why does the author say Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln belong together?
A. They were born on the same day.
B. They lived in the same period of time.
C. They started revolutions changing the world.
D. They were both great men in the history.
9. What does the author mean by “an apples and oranges---- or Superman vs. Santa --comparison” ?
A. It is hard to tell which one is greater as they are both outstanding.
B. The comparison between Darwin and Lincoln is easy and obvious.
C. It is difficult to compare them as they are as famous as Superman and Santa.
D. There is no point comparing them because they were born on the same day.
10. Lincoln’s contribution to the world can be best described as__________
A narrow. B. aggressive.
C. independent. D. ground-breaking.
11. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Lincoln’s success in election caused reconstruction.
B. Lincoln had tried to solve the racial problem.
C. Darwin was unique compared with Lincoln.
D. Darwin’s theory is similar to Lincoln’s belief.
D
China’s space industry has made great achievements, which makes us occupy a place in the world space field. After 11 years, China has finally completed its Tiangong space station with the docking (对接) its Mengtian lab module, establishing the Tiangong as the second operational space station apart from the US-led, multinational International Space Station.
On November 1, the Mengtian lab module, the third and final part of its Tiangong space station docked with the core Tianhe module 13 hours after being launched. Next, the Tianhe and Mengtian modules will dock with the Wentian lab module, completing Tiangong’s T-shaped basic structure. The 17.88-meter-long, 23-ton Mengtian module is the heaviest operational single-cabin (舱) active spacecraft in orbit. Mengtian consists of a work cabin, a goods airlock cabin, a payload cabin and resource cabin. In addition, it has eight scientific experiment rooms and 37 extravehicular (舱外的) installation (安装) options.
One of the more ambitious aims of China’s space program is to position the country as a leading provider of space-based international public goods and services, such as planetary defense. Last month, Asia Times reported about China’s plans to conduct its first asteroid (行星) direction-changing test in 2025 or 2026. China has also taken pioneering steps in Mar exploration. A good example is the completion of China’s Tianwen-1 Mars mission. China has also stated that it is willing to share scientific data from its Tianwen-l mission at an appropriate time and that scientists are welcome to apply for research over the data.
Moreover, China has also announced plans to send men to the moon, helping its future settlement and economic use. And China and Russia plan to establish a permanent moon base by 2027. The base, the International Lunar Research Station, is seen as an experimental complex designed for multiple scientific activities.
Reflecting China’s open-door space policy, the Tiangong is designed to be “inclusive” and adaptable for foreign astronauts.
12. Which statement is true about the Mengtian module according to the text?
A. It has docked with the Wentian lab module.
B. It is an significant part of Tiangong space station.
C. It is made up of four scientific experiment cabins.
D. It is heavier than all the other single-cabin spaceships.
13 Why did the author mention “China’s plan” in paragraph 4?
A. To present a fact. B. To explain a rule.
C. To clarify a concept. D. To make a prediction.
14. How will China explore the moon?
A. By sending men to the settlement of the moon.
B. By providing clear photos of the planet’s surface.
C. By sharing scientific data from its Tianwen-1 mission.
D By setting up a moon base for multiple scientific activities.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. International Space Station Suffers Wear and Tear
B. Side by Side, China Works with UN Member States
C. Step by Step, China Finds Its Footing in Outer Space
D. Tiangong Space Station Is Established Little by Little

Trash-Eating Robots
It has become common knowledge that our oceans are filled with garbage. Broken objects, used plastic bottles and so on fill our beaches and cover the ocean floor. ___16___ Many individuals and organizations are working to remove this garbage and recent technological developments have given them a new tool to do so: trash-eating robots.
Robots of various shapes have been designed to collect garbage that they find floating in the ocean. For example, the French company IADYS has developed what it calls the jellyfishbot. ___17___ It is remotely controlled and can clean up to 1,000 square meters per hour. It contains a net that can hold up to 30 liters. The jellyfishbots’ small size and ability to be easily controlled make them ideal for cleaning up crowded areas such as ports.
___18___ Designed for use on rivers, the Interceptor looks like a boat with a conveyor belt that picks up trash. A shallow barrier attached to the Interceptor guides floating trash to the conveyor belt, but fish can swim under it safely. Once a sensor indicates that the dustbins are full, the Interceptor automatically sends a text message to onshore operators. ___19___
Most of the garbage in the oceans comes down rivers. ___20___ Hence the Interceptor helps a lot to stop pollution before it enters the ocean. The Interceptor is completely solar-powered and operates on its own, which minimizes the need for human involvement.
Robots are able to clean up large amounts of garbage without humans struggling with beach cleanup by hand. Hopefully, they can be a big part of the solution to ocean pollution.
A. It isn’t just about removing the garbage from oceans.
B. Immense damages are being caused to ocean creatures.
C. If all goes well, they’re hoping to expand the number of the robot.
D. This small robot gathers up everything it encounters, including oil.
E. To keep the oceans clean, new garbage must be stopped from getting there
F. Then the garbage will be collected and sent to local waste management facilities.
G. For more open areas, a larger robot called the Interceptor has a similar function.

第二节:读后续写(共1小题;满分25分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a broke university student. I should have been going to university on a scholarship because I came from a low-income family, but a last-minute £100-a-year pay rise for my mum pushed my family over the threshold (门槛) for what defined “low-income” and I was suddenly no longer qualified for £15,000 a year in scholarship money. This news came after I’d been accepted by the university and signed the lease (租约) for my accommodation.
Despite my family not being labelled low-income anymore, I still wouldn’t receive any financial support from my family as all the income went toward taking care of my disabled brother and paying their own bills. It would be tight, but because I had savings from my part-time job, I decided to go to university anyway. After paying my rent, I had £10.20 a week for everything else including food, toiletries, and school supplies.
As I was in a new city, I really wanted to make friends, which was difficult when most of the social activities were expensive. Therefore, I jumped at the chance to do a relatively cheap coffee shop trip with my roommates who were pleasant to me.
I had £20 with me to get a cheap cup of coffee and my food shopping for a few weeks. So I headed for the coffee shop. While paying, I pulled out the note and a handful of change and realized I could pay without breaking the note, so I put it back in my pocket. It wasn’t until I arrived at the supermarket that I realized the note was gone. What should I do? I was desperate it was the equivalent (相等物) of two weeks of money. My roommates helped me look for the note. However, it was in vain. Finally, I went to school empty-handed.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150词左右;

D There is no point comparing them because they were born on the same day.
10. Lincoln’s contribution to the world can be best described as__________
A. narrow. B. aggressive.
C. independent. D. ground-breaking.
11. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Lincoln’s success in election caused reconstruction.
B. Lincoln had tried to solve the racial problem.
C. Darwin was unique compared with Lincoln.
D. Darwin’s theory is similar to Lincoln’s belief.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. B

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150词左右;

P2: I said, “Oh, ...This isn’t mine; my note was an old worn one.”
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 As a final attempt, I messaged the coffee shop’s Facebook page asking if they’d seen it. Least expecting a reply from them, I logged off with enormous disheartenment and continuous self-blame. How I wished I was careful enough so that the note would not slip out without my notice. However, five minutes, an alert from Facebook broke off my negative thoughts. “Yes, we indeed found a 20-dollar note. Please come ASAP!” The above words from the coffee shop instantly fueled me with energy. Without hesitation, I rushed back with a rapturous heart. Hardly had I entered the shop when a sweet-looking barista handed me a shiny 20-dollar note and asked tentatively, “Sir, is it yours?”
I said, “Oh, ... This isn’t mine; my note was an old worn one.” Beaming a most radiant smile, the barista explained gently that this note was from my most kind-hearted roommates, who, after witnessing my despair and devastation, would like to extend a helping hand. Hearing this, I felt a surge of warmth swelled up in my heart and my eyes were instantly moistened with grateful tears. Yes, life might be hard for me in a new city. But with the unreserved generosity and unwavering support from my roommate, I knew I could pull through any difficulty and rise to any challenge. Indeed, life is not a bed of roses, but love from my roommates make the world go around. Plus, I am bound to pay forward their kindness by helping more needy people like me.
