Wenchang, Hainan province, is famous for its rich culture and unique tropical island scenery. A series of spacecraft launches have made the coastal city a hit among tourists over the past five years. It will soon be in the spotlight (聚光灯) again after the schedule for a new mission was officially released, surely exciting news for space fans one and all. Below are some tips for space fans eager to tour the Wenchang region.
Transportation
Visitors from outside Hainan can arrive at Haikou Meilan International Airport, or at Sanya Phoenix International Airport at the southern tip of Hainan island, and then transfer (转乘) to Wenchang via a high-speed loop railway, the only one that circles a tropical island in the world. It takes bullet trains leaving Meilan, Haikou only 17 minutes to reach Wenchang station while a bullet train from Sanya Phoenix takes just over one hour. Local travel agencies operate tourism routes that take visitors to officially appointed viewing points and other natural and cultural attractions. Visitors also have the option to turn to app platforms to rent vehicles to drive to the space launch site and other tourist destinations on the tropical island.
Best launch views
There are numerous sites and means to watch space launches in Wenchang — on its beautiful sprawling beaches, in paddy fields, on roofs of homestays or just inside rooms of seaside hotels. However, frequent visitors say that sites around Qishui Bay, which is three kilometers from the launch center, are known for offering the most impressive views.

3. Who might be most interested in the text?
A. Space fans. B. Adventure lovers. C. News reporters. D. Travel agents.

Shanghai’s 11-year-old sailor, Yang Jixin, has made a notable entry in the sailing records by completing the 2024 Rizhao-Qingdao Island Hopping Race, navigating (横渡) 66 nautical miles, around 77 miles in the ocean. Yang also set a new benchmark (基准) by being the youngest Chinese youth to complete such a long voyage.
The race, which started on Aug. 10 from the Rizhao World Sailing Base and ended at the Beijing Olympic Sailing Training Base in Qingdao on Aug. 13, presented a series of challenges over its four- day sailing. Yang, the youngest national record-holder for kayaking (皮艇运动) across the Qiongzhou Strait, demonstrated her toughness and sailing acumen (敏锐) among the hot and wet weather, periods of calm, headwinds, and the complex interference (干扰) of waves.
The organizers took careful steps to ensure the safety of sailors, carrying out measures such as maritime rescue, medical support, and navigation monitoring throughout the event.
Upon her arrival at the Silver Sea Yacht Marina in Qingdao, Yang was welcomed by several figures from the sailing community, including Dai Zhiqiang, a former member of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Vice Chairman of the China Yachting Association, and Principal of the National Sailing School. Their presence recognized the significance of her success.
Dai greeted Yang with a congratulatory smile and rang the bell in her honor, a traditional mark of a successful sailing journey. His actions reflected the encouragement and support for the up-and-coming generation of sailors that Yang represents.
Yang’s achievement is more than a personal success. It’s an inspiration for young sailors and it highlights the potential for future developments in the sport of sailing. By setting a new record for the youngest Chinese youth in long-distance sailing, she has opened doors for others to follow and has shown that age is no barrier to ambition and skill. Her journey across the waves will undoubtedly encourage others to map their courses, and to rise to the challenges that lie beyond the known shores.
4. Which of the following can best describe Yang Jixin?
A. Determined and skilled. B. Generous and confident.
C. Helpful and successful. D. Adventurous and honest.
5. Why were some famous figures present when Yang reached the Silver Sea Yacht Marina?
A. To follow her example. B. To celebrate her achievement.
C. To face challenges with her. D. To offer her further guidance.
6. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Yang’s suggestions. B. Yang’s potential.
C. Yang’s ambitions. D. Yang’s influences.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. The 2024 Rizhao-Qingdao Island Hopping Race B. A Young Sailor’s Inspiring Day
C. 11-year-old Sailor Braving the Sea D. Sailing Challenges Testing Courage

New students at Eton, starting the school year in September, are not allowed to take smartphones with them. Instead, they will each be given a “dumb” Nokia phone that is unable to access the Internet and only allows calls and texts.
Students might blame the psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who popularised the idea that smartphones are responsible for rising rates of mental health problems among young people. Teachers at nearly two-thirds of secondary schools now say they have rules that prevent students from using their phones during the day.
But is there really anything wrong with spending a bit of time watching videos on social media? Or taking your phone out while you’re in the supermarket queue to see funny news? We might need meaning and purpose and psychological richness in our lives, but surely we need a bit of pleasure too. A study published in April in PLoS One found that spending 20 minutes on social media or watching videos on YouTube not only contributed to no negative stress response, but was associated with a decrease in both heart rate and cortisol (皮质醇).
What we get wrong is thinking that we are relaxing just because scrolling (浏览) mindlessly through social media is unproductive and feels like “time out”. There is a significant difference between doing things like being with our loved ones, spending time in nature, or reading a great book and emotional numbing (麻木). As the psychiatrist Anna Lembke argues in her book Dopamine Nation, by endlessly seeking pleasure and stimulation from our smartphone — which she describes as the “modern-day hypodermic (皮下注射) needle” — we become addicted to such stimulation, and find it harder to find joy in other less immediate things.
But also, by never putting our phones down and never giving ourselves a break from endless stimulation, we are not able to go into the kind of quiet brain state that allows mind-wandering, creativity and deep reflection.
As we all know, if you are not paying for it, then you are the product, and businessmen in the marketplace of attention are constantly adjusting the ways in which they occupy our brain space. We must learn to get more creative and intentional about the ways we choose to relax ourselves and perhaps, even, to enjoy some good-old fashioned boredom.
8. Why is the school Eton mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To raise a doubt. B. To explain a phenomenon.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To launch a campaign.
9. What does the study published in April in PLoS One suggest?
A. Constant use of social media is beneficial to health.
B. Proper use of social media can reduce stress.
C Watching YouTube videos increases heart rate.
D. Spending time on social media has little effect on people.
10. Why does Anna Lembke describe the smartphone as the “modern-day hypodermic needle”?
A. Because smartphones can bring new energy.
B. Because people rely too much on smartphones.
C. Because smartphones might relieve pain quickly.
D. Because people will get medical help from smartphones.
11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. We should pay for using smartphones. B. Businessmen often control our thinking.
C. Boredom is unacceptable in modern life. D. We should choose our relaxing ways wisely.
D
Whether you shop for food in a traditional grocery store or a big-box store most of your options are junk foods. Terms on food packaging like “low fat,” “gluten-free,” “keto-friendly” and “a good source of fiber” don’t answer the fundamental question: Is this food good for me? There is little reliable guidance available for people who don’t have the time, patience or skill to analyze the nutrition labels (标签).
But what we really need is a bold (大胆的) move that would be to prevent people from food that’s bad for them: a warning sign that a high-sugar soda or breakfast cereal product, for example, is an unhealthy choice.
Chile, Mexico, Brazil and dozens of other countries have worked to change food labeling. Research has suggested that these labels can help people understand nutritional quality and change their purchasing habits. Finally, the goal of the labels is to improve nutrition and reduce the consumption of over-processed foods.
After Chile adopted several rules in 2016, researchers found that the consumption of drinks high in sugar and sodium declined by nearly 25 percent. In Uruguay a survey published in 2020 assessing the early effects of nutritional warnings found that 58 percent of participants who noticed the warning changed their decisions about buying a product. Of those who changed their decisions, 17 percent said they chose a similar product with fewer warnings, and 18 percent decided not to buy a similar product at all.
In the United States, new labeling laws will be much more challenging to take effect. As you might expect, food producers will surely try to stop warning labels from being required. They are arguing that these plans would be costly and that those costs would be passed on to consumers. But research conducted soon after Chile’s food labeling and advertising law passed showed no effects on total employment and negligible effects on wages (工资) and profit, even as consumer consumption of unhealthy foods declined.
To be clear this is just one of many steps toward providing all Americans with a healthy diet. But knowable front-of-package labeling is one of the best levers (杠杆) available to policymakers, and it is already working elsewhere. It can work here, too.
12. What does paragraph 1 focus on?
A. The doubt about nutrition. B. The problem with labels.
C. The doubt about package. D. The problem with food.
13. What do the examples of Chile and Uruguay show?
A. Warning labels can effectively change people’s buying behavior.
B. People in the two countries have better nutrition awareness.
C. Food producers there work well with the government.
D. The consumption of over-processed foods has been stopped.
14. What does the underlined word “negligible” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Obvious. B. Lasting. C. Insignificant. D. Huge.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards adopting warning labels in the United States?
A. Unclear. B. Opposing. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

“Mom, please, please,” I begged. “Please, by myself?” I had never made cookies by myself before. As a nine-year-old girl, I was old enough to do a lot of things.
“Alana is going to cook? Alone?” my brother Caleb, asked with a laugh. “That is going to be a disaster!” Caleb used big words to act older and smarter than me. Having a big brother can be annoying. My parents looked at each other. My dad lowered his eyebrows. Would they let me do it? I held my breath.
“OK” Mom said. “But Alana, please take your time. And be careful.”
I raced to the kitchen and went to work. I laid out everything I would need. I broke three eggs into a bowl and added in some flour and butter. Using an electric mixer was easy. I had done it with Mom a million times before. I turned on the mixer at medium speed — and whoa. Whoa. Whoa! “WHOA!” I cried. What a disaster! I had to wipe batter (面糊) off my face, then off the cupboard and floor.
“Yuck! Alana’s a mess! Alana’s a mess!” my brother laughed.
“Caleb, you just get out of here,” I yelled, waving a spoon. “Leave me alone.”
Caleb laughed and walked away. I shook my head and turned back to the mixing bowl. I started again. Referring to the recipe, I added a little of this and a little of that into the bowl, placed the little rounded dough (面团) balls onto the pan and put it into the oven. After a while, I looked inside the oven, and my heart sank. The neat, little batter melted into a huge, gluey puddle (水坑) that was flowing to the edges of the pan. UGH! I pulled the pan out of the oven just as Caleb walked back into the kitchen.
“What in the world?” He started to laugh. “Cookie soup?”
“You just be quiet,” I whispered, tears rolling down my cheeks. “Just leave me alone.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

C. Watching YouTube videos increases heart rate.
C 9. B 10. B 11. D

根据第一段“New students at Eton, starting the school year in September, are not allowed to take smartphones with them. Instead, they will each be given a “dumb” Nokia phone that is unable to access the Internet and only allows calls and texts.(伊顿公学9月份开学的新生是不允许随身携带智能手机的。取而代之的是,他们每人将得到一部不能上网,只能打电话和发短信的“哑巴”诺基亚手机)”可知,第一段提到了伊顿公学是为了引入一个话题。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“A study published in April in PLoS One found that spending 20 minutes on social media or watching videos on YouTube not only contributed to no negative stress response, but was associated with a decrease in both heart rate and cortisol (皮质醇).(今年4月发表在PLoS One上的一项研究发现,花20分钟在社交媒体上或在YouTube上看视频不仅不会产生负面的压力反应,而且还能降低心率和皮质醇)”可知,4月份发表在PLoS One上的这项研究表明正确使用社交媒体可以减轻压力。
根据第四段“As the psychiatrist Anna Lembke argues in her book Dopamine Nation, by endlessly seeking pleasure and stimulation from our smartphone — which she describes as the “modern-day hypodermic (皮下注射) needle” — we become addicted to such stimulation, and find it harder to find joy in other less immediate things.(正如精神病学家安娜·莱姆克在她的书《多巴胺国度》中所说,通过不断地从我们的智能手机中寻求快乐和刺激——她将其描述为“现代的皮下注射针”——我们对这种刺激上瘾,并且发现很难在其他不那么直接的事情中找到快乐)”可知,Anna Lembke将智能手机描述为“现代的皮下注射针”是因为人们太依赖智能手机了。
根据最后一段“As we all know, if you are not paying for it, then you are the product, and businessmen in the marketplace of attention are constantly adjusting the ways in which they occupy our brain space. We must learn to get more creative and intentional about the ways we choose to relax ourselves and perhaps, even, to enjoy some good-old fashioned boredom.(我们都知道,如果你不付钱,那么你就是产品,注意力市场上的商人们不断调整他们占据我们大脑空间的方式。我们必须学会在选择放松自己的方式时更有创意,更有意识,甚至可以享受一些老式的无聊)”可知,我们应该明智地选择放松的方式。故选D。
D
Whether you shop for food in a traditional grocery store or a big-box store, most of your options are junk foods.
To be clear, this is just one of many steps toward providing all Americans with a healthy diet.
A. Unclear. B. Opposing. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第一段“Whether you shop for food in a traditional grocery store or a big-box store, most of your options are junk foods.
根据第四段“After Chile adopted several rules in 2016, researchers found that the consumption of drinks high in sugar and sodium declined by nearly 25 percent. 故选A项。
根据画线词的上文“They are arguing that these plans would be costly and that those costs would be passed on to consumers. But research conducted soon after Chile’s food labeling and advertising law passed showed no effects on total employment
作者在文中列举了其他国家实施食品警告标签取得的积极效果,并在最后一段中“But knowable front-of-package labeling is one of the best levers (杠杆) available to policymakers, and it is already working elsewhere. It can work here, too. (但是,包装正面可见的标签是政策制定者可用的最佳杠杆之一,而且它已经在其他地方发挥作用。这在这里也行得通。)”指出这一举措在美国应该也是可行的。由此可知,作者对在美国采用警告标签持支持态度。故选D项。

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了在预定出国跟团游之前应该准备的一些事务。
【16题详解】
前文“When it comes to travelling abroad, many people choose a group tour to get the most out of their holiday. (说到出国旅游,许多人选择跟团旅游来最大限度地利用他们的假期)”提到出国旅游时很多人选择跟团旅游,表明这样有充分利用假期的好处,后文“Thankfully, travel expert Dilvin Yasa has shared tips for that. (值得庆幸的是,旅游专家Dilvin Yasa分享了这方面的建议)”提到一名旅游专家分享了建议,空处应该与跟团旅游存在的问题相关,因此G项“However, there are always things to handle before booking your trip. (然而,在预订旅行之前,总有一些事情需要处理)”符合语境,指出预订旅行前也有事务需处理,和前文构成转折,引出后文的建议。故选G。
【17题详解】
前文“When planning your group tour, budgeting is an important factor, as these trips are rarely all-inclusive (包含一切的). (当计划你的团体旅游时,预算是一个重要因素,因为这些旅行很少是全包的)”指出计划团体旅游需考虑预算,后文“Extra costs on a group tour could include meals, attractions and additional activities, so please factor potential costs in. (团体旅游的额外费用可能包括餐饮、景点和额外的活动,所以请考虑潜在的费用)”说明额外费用具体包括哪些,空处应该是建议计算预计的额外费用,因此F项“Add up all the extra costs until you arrive at your real figure. (把所有额外费用加起来,直到你得出你的实际数字为止)”符合语境,承前启后,其中的extra costs在后文有同词复现。故选F。
【18题详解】
后文“Yasa advised against skipping between different destinations, as strict time limits could prevent you from participating in back to back tours. “If the distances or time between destinations are not listed, turn to Google Maps to know how long you’re expected to be on the road.” 故选A。
前文“The worst is missing a connecting flight or experiencing delays. (最糟糕的情况是错过转机或遇到延误)”提到错过转机或遇到延误的糟糕情况,空处依旧是Yasa所说的话,应该与这些糟糕情况的后果有关,因此E项“You may miss the first or two of the tour you’ve paid for. (你可能会错过你已经付过钱的前一两个行程)”符合语境,表明这样会错过行程,承接前文。故选E。
【20题详解】
前文“Especially when travelling to more remote locations, or visiting smaller food stands or markets, you shouldn’t assume everywhere will take card payments.

“Mom, please, please,” I begged. “Please, by myself?” I had never made cookies by myself before. As a nine-year-old girl, I was old enough to do a lot of things.
“Alana is going to cook? Alone?” my brother, Caleb, asked with a laugh. “That is going to be a disaster!” Caleb used big words to act older and smarter than me. Having a big brother can be annoying. My parents looked at each other. My dad lowered his eyebrows. Would they let me do it? I held my breath.
“OK,” Mom said.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
My brother looked at me for a long minute. Then he stopped laughing. “Hey, it’s okay,” he said softly. “Let’s figure this out together.” I was surprised. I had expected more teasing. He picked up the recipe and studied it carefully. “I think you added too much liquid,” he said. “Let’s try again and measure everything precisely.” With his help, we prepared the dough once more, making sure every ingredient was just right. This time, when we put the pan into the oven, I felt more confident.
“Oh, Alana, you did it. All by yourself?” my mom asked, smiling. I was about to say no when Caleb cut in. “Yes, she did. I just gave a little help at the end. Alana worked really hard.” I looked at him in gratitude. Mom took out the perfectly baked cookies. They smelled delicious. Dad came in, and we all sat around the table, enjoying the cookies. I was so happy. Not only had I made cookies, but I also learned that even though having a big brother can be annoying sometimes, he can also be a great helper when you need him most.
