Betty Reid Soskin retired at the age of 100 as the oldest active National Park Service (NPS) ranger (护林员). She spent her last day on the job at the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.
As an NPS employee, Soskin tirelessly promoted the stories of African American people and women of color who contributed to the home front effort during World War II. She worked for the United States Air Force in 1942 but left her job after learning that she’d only been hired because her employers mistakenly believed that she was white.
After leaving the Air Force, Soskin worked as a file clerk at Boilermaker’s A-36, an all-Black union hall in the San Francisco Bay Area. A talented musician, she and her husband, Mel Reid, founded one of the first Black-owned music stores in the region in 1945. Soskin also spent tens of years working as a member for officials in Berkeley City Council and the California State Assembly.
The newly retired ranger has been involved with the Richmond national park since its establishment in 2000. In these early planning years, Soskin was often the only person of color in the meeting room.
At 84, Soskin first joined the NPS in a temporary (临时的) role, working to share the understudied stories of Black Americans on the home front. She was hired as a forever NPS worker in 2011.
“I feel such pride in the uniform (制服),” Soskin said. “When I’m in a public place, I’m introducing silently to every child of color a career path that they might not ever be aware of, because they’ve never seen a person of color like me in a National Park uniform.”
“Giving shape to a new national park has been exciting and meaningful,” she added. “It has proven to bring meaning to my final years.”
4. Why did Soskin decide to leave the Air Force?
A. She felt lonely and unhappy.
B. She didn’t like the working environment there.
C. She wasn’t respected because of her skin color.
D. She was invited to be a clerk at Boilermaker’s A-36.
5. What does “person of color” refer to in paragraph 4?
A. Person who is not white. B. Person who is African.
C. Person who does tough work. D. Person who has different colors.
6. What did Soskin do as a temporary worker in NPS?
A. She put on musical performances.
B. She dealt with some official paperwork.
C. She worked to improve the social position of black women.
D. She told stories of black Americans’ contributions on the home front.
7. What did Soskin think of her job as a ranger?
A. Creative and valuable. B. Exciting and meaningful.
C. Tough and dangerous. D. Well-paid and inspiring.
C 5. A 6. D 7. B
从文章第二段“She worked for the United States Air Force in 1942 but left her job after learning that she’d only been hired because her employers mistakenly believed that she was white.(她在 1942 年为美国空军工作,但在得知自己仅仅是因为雇主误以为她是白人而被录用后,她辞去了这份工作。)”
由划线句“In these early planning years, Soskin was often the only person of color in the meeting room.(在这些早期的规划年份里,索斯金常常是会议室里唯一的有色人种。)” 故选A项。
由文章第五段“At 84, Soskin first joined the NPS in a temporary (临时的) role, working to share the understudied stories of Black Americans on the home front.(84 岁时,索斯金首次以临时职位加入国家公园管理局,致力于分享美国黑人在国内战线上那些鲜为人知的故事。)” She told stories of black Americans’ contributions on the home front.(她讲述美国黑人在国内战线上的贡献故事)符合原文。
从最后一段“‘Giving shape to a new national park has been exciting and meaningful,’ she added. ‘It has proven to bring meaning to my final years.’(‘塑造一个新的国家公园既令人兴奋又有意义,’ 她补充道。‘事实证明,这为我的晚年生活带来了意义。’)”可知,Soskin认为塑造一个新的国家公园既令人兴奋又有意义,并且这份工作为她的晚年带来了意义。故选B项。
C
When you finally finish your homework and get to relax, what do you do? Do you lie on your bed and scroll through (滚屏) your phone? Many people find that this kind of entertainment only brings boredom and emptiness.
Contrary to what many people may think, play isn’t just a waste of time. Having the ability to play and relax meaningfully during your leisure time is important.
“Leisure doesn’t improve quality of life unless one knows how to use it effectively,” James Wallman, the author of Time and How to Spend It, told CNBC Make It, explaining that some experiences are “junk experiences” while others are like “superfoods”.
The “superfood” activities put you into a state of “flow”, which is “about being in the present zone and really enjoying yourself”, added Wallman. Any pleasurable activity that truly challenges us has the potential to lead to the flow state.
These “superfoods” help you achieve a higher “leisure quotient” (LQ, 玩商). LQ is an index (指数) used to describe one’s ability to relax and play. A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life, knows how to develop their potential and keeps a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and happier, according to China Daily.
Psychological (心理学的) research shows that people with high LQ scores feel happier and generally avoid depression (抑郁) and other mental illnesses. Meanwhile, Kenichi Ohmae, a Japanese management expert, points out that those who can play will succeed.
Instead of doing passive activities like scrolling through short videos, people with high LQ scores actively select activities that suit their interests and strengths, giving them continuous positive feedback.
According to Wallman, examples of this positive feedback include: a memorable story you can share with others; a new skill or a different world view; greater engagement with the real world; and improved relationships or a higher social position.
Next time you find yourself bored with nothing to do, try engaging in some experiences that can benefit you or add to your life. It’s never too late to improve your LQ!
8. What kind of activities are “superfood” activities according to James Wallman?
A. Those that make you energetic.
B. Those that help you find something new.
C. Those that are both enjoyable and challenging.
D. Those that cause you to feel excited for a while.
9. What does the LQ index measure?
A. The potential to have a successful life.
B. The ability to manage stress effectively.
C. The ability to balance health and happiness.
D. The skills in meaningful play and relaxation.
10. What can people with a high LQ usually do?
A. Follow the same world view as others.
B. Make life meaningful, enjoyable and healthy.
C. Select activities which suit their interests only.
D. Avoid depression and mental illnesses completely.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The debate about the use of LQ.
B. The importance of LQ and its effects.
C. Different ways to improve a person’s LQ.
D. The connection between LQ and happiness.
C 9. D 10. B 11. B
根据文章第四段 “The ‘superfood’ activities put you into a state of ‘flow’, which is ‘about being in the present zone and really enjoying yourself’, added Wallman. Any pleasurable activity that truly challenges us has the potential to lead to the flow state. (‘超级食物’活动会让你进入一种‘心流’状态,‘心流’是指‘处于当下,真正享受自我’,沃尔曼补充道。任何真正挑战我们愉快活动都有可能导致心流状态。)”可知,“超级食物”活动是既令人愉快又具有挑战性的活动。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第五段“LQ is an index (指数) used to describe one’s ability to relax and play. (玩商(LQ)是一个用来描述一个人放松和娱乐能力的指数。)”可知,LQ是一个用来描述一个人放松和娱乐能力的指数。所以,D选项 “在有意义的娱乐和放松方面的技能” 符合原文对 LQ 指数的定义。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第五段 “A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life, knows how to develop their potential and keeps a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and happier, according to China Daily.
The importance of LQ and its effects.
D
February is coming, and with it comes the review of those New Year’s resolutions (决定) that were so eagerly made just a few weeks ago. It’s thought that about a quarter of us make New Year’s resolutions every January, but evidence varies around how many of us actually manage to stick to them. In one set of data (数据), from the quarter of us who make New Year’s resolutions, about 35% report sticking to all of their goals, while 50% manage some of them. But what about those remaining people who fall short , and don’t carry out their resolutions?
If that’s you, you’re not alone. In 2023, a separate piece of research carried out at Edith Cowan University, Australia, found that two-thirds of people surveyed gave up on their New Year’s resolutions in the first month of the year. But all is not lost, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t stick to your resolutions. It is not too late if you want to start up your resolutions again as we move into February.
The words we choose and the approach we take when creating our resolutions can have a significant impact on our success. Research carried out in 2023 at Stockholm University found that so-called “approach goals” were much more effective than “avoidance goals”. Approach goals, like “I will exercise three times a week to stay healthy and fit”, include achieving or keeping a good result. Avoidance goals, such as “I’ll stop eating chocolate and sweets”, try to avoid a bad result. In addition, make your resolutions specific and measurable. Goals such as “I want to get fit” are too unclear to achieve or keep up with.
So look at how you presented your resolutions and have a think about how you go about acting on them -it may not be too late to try them again. How about trying for February?
12. What can replace the underlined part “fall short” in paragraph 1?
A. Care nothing. B. Lose heart. C. Fail to achieve. D. Keep trying.
13. What did the 2023 Australian research show?
A. New Year’s resolutions were useless.
B. New Year’s resolutions varied from year to year.
C. People took their New Year’s resolutions lightly.
D. Most people didn’t keep their New Year’s resolutions.
14. Which of the following resolutions is achievable?
A. I’ll read a book a month. B. I’ll quit drinking.
C. I’ll stop using social media. D. I’ll not stay up for ever.
15. What is a suitable title for this text?
A. A New February?
B. Never Too Late to Start Over?
C. Say No to New Year’s Resolutions?
D. New Year’s Resolutions, Same You?
C 13. D 14. A 15. D
从划线句“But what about those remaining people who fall short , and don’t carry out their resolutions?(但是,那些 的人,没有执行决心的人呢?)”中and don’t carry out their resolutions可知,“fall short”描述的是那些没有执行自己新年决心的人。
由文章第二段“In 2023, a separate piece of research carried out at Edith Cowan University, Australia, found that two-thirds of people surveyed gave up on their New Year’s resolutions in the first month of the year.(2023年,澳大利亚伊迪丝科文大学进行的另一项研究发现,三分之二的受访者在新年的第一个月就放弃了他们的新年决心。)”
由文章第三段“In addition, make your resolutions specific and measurable. Goals such as ‘I want to get fit’ are too unclear to achieve or keep up with.(此外,让你的决心具体而可衡量。诸如‘我想健身’之类的目标太不清楚,无法实现或跟上。)”可知,要使新年决心可实现,需要具体且可衡量。A 选项“I’ll read a book a month”,明确规定了每个月读一本书,时间和任务都很具体,具有可衡量性,符合可实现的要求。故选A项。

由上文“But climate change has caused the ice to melt (融化) and the glacier to move back.(但是气候变化导致冰层融化,冰川向后退缩。)” That means it is losing more snow and ice than it gains.(那意味着它失去的冰雪比获得的要多。)
由上文“Experts guess that by 2050, people will not be able to see the Mendenhall glacier from the visitor center that was built for it.(专家猜测,到 2050 年,人们将无法从为门登霍尔冰川建造的游客中心看到它。)” That is already the case at some other glacier visitor centers in Alaska.(在阿拉斯加的一些其他冰川游客中心,这种情况已经存在了。)
由上文“The disappearing glacier leads to problems for the Alaskan tourism industry.(冰川的消失给阿拉斯加旅游业带来了问题。)”以及下文“About 2.6 million ship passengers are expected to stop in Juneau in 2025. That is the most ever in one year. On especially busy days,20,000 people arrive each day in the city that has only 30,000 full-time people.(预计2025年约有260万船上乘客将在朱诺停留。这是一年来最多的一次。在特别繁忙的日子里,每天有2万人来到这个只有3万名全职员工的城市。)”可知,朱诺的游客数量众多,空格处需要引出下文对朱诺旅游业的具体描述,同时体现旅游业在朱诺的重要性。而B项“Tourism is an important part of Juneau’s economy.(旅游业是朱诺经济的重要组成部分。)”
由上文“She and her husband first visited the state and its glaciers in the 1990s. She told about seeing another glacier not too far from the Mendenhall glacier over 20 years ago.(她和她的丈夫在 20 世纪 90 年代首次访问了这个州及其冰川。她讲述了 20 多年前看到离门登霍尔冰川不远的另一个冰川的情景。)”可知,这表明Jennifer Dumas有过去对阿拉斯加冰川的亲身经历。空格处需要对她的这种经历进行总结,说明她对阿拉斯加冰川过去的了解。而D项She knows what Alaska’s glaciers looked like in the past.(她知道阿拉斯加的冰川过去是什么样子的。)

A boy, named Charlie, who lived in the country, was learning reading and writing from his father. His father was very strict but also fair. Every day after the morning lessons, he would allow Charlie to enjoy himself for one hour.
One day, Charlie went to play near the river not far from his home. On the riverbank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked hard to keep themselves above want. But they were greatly troubled, for fear that their only son should never learn to read and write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
While exploring the riverbank, Charlie noticed a boy about his age, who was thin and his clothes were shabby (破烂的), sitting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charlie went close to him and asked for his name and whether he was drawing pictures.
“My name is Leo. I am not drawing but trying to write,” said Leo, “but I know only two words — those I saw upon a sign, and I am trying to write them.”
“If I could only learn to read and write,” said he, “I should be the happiest boy in the world.”
Charlie felt a strong sense of sympathy (同情) for this boy. He decided to use his own free time to teach him to read and write. “Then I will make you happy,” said Charlie. “I’m only a little boy, but I can teach you that. My father gives me an hour each day for myself. Now, if you try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and write.”
Both Leo and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charlie. They told him it was what they wished above all things.
So, from that day on, during his one-hour free time, Charlie put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Leo. Leo was a quick learner and Charlie soon began to teach him how to write.
Some time later a gentleman went to Charlie’s father, and said, “I often see Charlie go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Charlie’s father took him to town and bought school supplies for him and Leo the following day.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Charlie’s father hurried to look for him as soon as the gentleman left. He ran to the riverbank, hoping to see the boat. However, he couldn’t see anything and became uneasy. Unwilling to leave without seeing his son, the father went to the hut. The moment he looked into the open window with care, he saw a pleasant sight. Charlie was at the table, ruling a copybook Leo was reading to him, while his mother was doing some washing in the corner. Charlie was afraid his father might be angry. But to his joy, he needn’t worry because his father was delighted.
Charlie’s father took him to town and bought school supplies for him and Leo the following day. Charlie was overjoyed, holding the things tightly. His mind was filled with the stories he would write and the adventures he and Leo could create. Once arriving at home, he couldn’t wait to run to Leo with the things in hand. Charlie carefully opened one of the books and began to read aloud, his voice full of excitement and wonder. Leo listened carefully, his eyes wide with expectation. They spent the rest of the day making a plan to write a story. Their relationship strengthened, united by the magic of words.

9. What does the LQ index measure?

B The ability to manage stress effectively.
C. The ability to balance health and happiness.

B New Year’s resolutions varied from year to year.

Some time later, a gentleman went to Charlie’s father, and said, “I often see Charlie go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
