On May 21, 2022, Tom Turcich of New Jersey became the 10th person to walk around the world. Over seven years, he walked 48,000 kilometers across six continents and 38 countries - most of it with his dog Savannah.
Speaking to CNN, Turcich explained that, after a friend died in an accident at age 17 he started to look at life differently, and decided to go on a journey around the world. It took over eight years of saving and planning before Turcich finally left his home on April 2, 2015 - just before his 26th birthday - on his way to Panama. He had a stroller to carry his hiking equipment, a sleeping bag, a laptop, a camera and a box of food.
About four months into the journey, Turcich adopted Savannah from, an animal shelter in Texas. She joined him for the rest of the trip, becoming the first dog to walk around the world. The pair walked around 30-40 kilometers a day, spending most nights camping. Some parts could not be done on foot, however - such as when Turcich and Savannah took a boat from Uruguay to Antarctica. In late 2017, Turcich had to return home to recover from an illness he got while traveling through Ireland and the UK.
He and Savannah started walking again in May 2018, going through Europe, North Africa and Turkey before getting stuck in Azerbaijan for six months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They were able to travel to Kyrgyzstan before taking a plane to Seattle. From there, he and Savannah walked back to New Jersey.
Turcich said the most difficult place to walk through was “desolate“ Wyoming. Now that he’s back home, Turcich says he wants to stay in one place for a while - and write a book about his trip.
4. What led to Turcich’s decision to walk around the world?

I got the opportunity to pursue an unmatchable educational vision at Stanford University. I was flooded with feelings of relief and excitement. It was a miracle that the American Dream had exposed its colors in my favor.
Upon arrival at the campus ambition burned within me. I imagined becoming President of the Student Union, a member of Cardinal Calypso, and so on. I wanted Stanford to be a place for me to really learn about the vast world.
I was extremely occupied beyond the classroom. As an active member of nearly twelve VSOs (Voluntary Service Overseas), I could hardly focus on my study. Ultimately, my academic journey at Stanford was characterized by a lack of consistency (连贯性). The letter informing me of my academic suspension (停学) did not come as a surprise.I knew I would have to face consequences.
Fortunately, Infomineo, a research organization, offered me the opportunity to complete a six-month internship (实习) . This experience has done wonders for me, giving me insight into who I am, what I want to do, where I want to be, and how I can get there. I should have known that the freshman year is about testing out courses and extra-curriculars, and that each decision should end up helping me in the future.
Most significantly, I’ve learned big changes are born of little consistencies. This is what I will carry for the rest of my life, especially at Stanford University. Consistently attending professors’ classes or routinely setting aside time to review notes outside the classroom. This is where I stand now, and ready to tackle Stanford again. This time, with clearer sight of how to accomplish my goals, I feel that I have detected and revealed a new power within me.
8. How did the author feel when arriving at Stanford?
A. Excited and nervous.
B. Grateful and curious.
C. Ambitious and hopeful.
D. Relieved and puzzled.
9. What happened to the author at Stanford?
A. He was rejected by the Student Union.
B. He failed to meet academic requirements.
C. He was burdened with heavy schoolwork.
D. He managed to establish voluntary groups.
10. Which of the following best describes the author’s internship experience?
A. Demanding. B. Beneficial. C. Fruitless. D. Risky.
11. What lesson has the author learnt?
A. Dreams work wonders.
B. Changes promote progress.
C. Consistencies make the difference.
D. Opportunities favor the prepared mind.
C 9. B 10. B 11. C

D
You spend a third of your life asleep, a certain part of which involves dreaming. But most often, you don’t remember any of your dreams. While the exact reason of why we can hardly recall our dreams is not fully known, scientists have gotten some insight into memory processes during sleep, leading to several ideas that may explain our forgetfulness.
You are awake, but is your hippocampus (海马体) awake? When we fall asleep, not all the brain’s regions go offline at the same time. Researchers have found one of the last regions to go to sleep is the hippocampus, a structure in brain that is important for moving information from short-term memory into long-term memory.
“If the hippocampus is the last to go to sleep, it could very well be the last to wake up,” said Thomas Andrillon, a neuroscientist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. While this might explain why dream memories are so fleeting, it doesn’t mean that your hippocampus has been inactive throughout the night. In fact, this region is quite active during sleep.
Sometimes your dreams are just not memorable. Do you remember what you were thinking about this morning when brushing your teeth? Dreams, especially ordinary ones, may be just like daydreaming thoughts and believed by the brain to be too useless to remember. But dreams that are more vivid, emotional and coherent (连贯的) seem to be better remembered.
If you are interested in improving your dream recall, there are a few tricks to try. One is drinking water before bed, because it will make you wake up at night to use the bathroom. These middle-of-the-night awakenings are frequently accompanied by dream recall. Repeatedly reminding yourself that you want to remember your dreams may increase your chances, and so does keeping a dream journal, some studies have suggested. Upon waking up, hang on to that fragile (脆弱的) dream memory: keep your eyes closed, stay still and replay the dream memory, until your hippocampus catches up and properly stores the memory.
12. What does the underlined word “fleeting” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Inactive. B. Short-lived. C. Significant. D. Slight.
13. You can remember your dreams more easily when you wake up probably because ______.
A. your dreams are vivid, emotional and coherent
B. you are forgetful and poor in remembering things
C. your hippocampus is active in receiving new information
D. your brain needs to start up to move dreams into long-term memory
14. Which of the following CANNOT help you to recall a dream?
A. Keep reminding yourself of the need to remember your dreams.
B. Record what you can remember in your dreams upon awakening.
C. Improve the ability of your hippocampus to catch up information.
D. Think back on the things in your dreams directly after you wake up.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell the importance of dreams.
B To present some methods to recall dreams.
C. To explain our forgetfulness in dreams.
D. To analyze how our brain deal with information.
B 13. A 14. C 15. C
第二段“Researchers have found one of the last regions to go to sleep is the hippocampus, a structure in brain that is important for moving information from short-term memory into long-term memory. (研究人员发现,海马体是最后进入睡眠状态的区域之一,海马体是大脑中的一个结构,它对将信息从短期记忆转移到长期记忆很重要。)”和划线词前的“If the hippocampus is the last to go to sleep, it could very well be the last to wake up.( 如果海马体是最后一个入睡的,那么它很可能是最后一个醒来的。)”说明海马体能够将信息从短期记忆转移到长期记忆,但是它可能最后醒来,所以人们梦的记忆往往是短期的,从而推知划线词所在句“While this might explain why dream memories are so fleeting, it doesn’t mean that your hippocampus has been inactive throughout the night. (虽然这可以解释为什么梦的记忆如此fleeting,但这并不意味着你的海马体整晚都不活跃。)”其中划线词汇意思是“短暂的,短期的”。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“But dreams that are more vivid, emotional and coherent (连贯的) seem to be better remembered. (但更生动、更情绪化、更连贯的梦似乎更容易被记住。)”可知,因为你的梦生动、情绪化、连贯,所以当你醒来时更容易地记住你的梦。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Repeatedly reminding yourself that you want to remember your dreams may increase your chances, and so does keeping a dream journal, some studies have suggested. Upon waking up, hang on to that fragile (脆弱的) dream memory: keep your eyes closed, stay still and replay the dream memory, until your hippocampus catches up and properly stores the memory.
通读全文,根据第一段中“But most often, you don’t remember any of your dreams. While the exact reason of why we can hardly recall our dreams is not fully known, scientists have gotten some insight into memory processes during sleep, leading to several ideas that may explain our forgetfulness.
Everyone knows that the media can be and is manipulated (操控). Everything that we read on the Internet may not always be true. People have constantly been complaining about lies in the media. ____16____ Here are some tips and tools:
Check the domain. Established news organizations usually own their domains and they have a standard look. Many fake ones use similar URLs and domain names, but rather than using a “.com”, they use “.com.co” endings. ____17____ But abcnews. com.co is not!
Check the comments. Headlines are meant to get the readers’ attention and reflect what the story is about. ____18____ Headlines are often written in exaggerated (夸张的) language with the intention of being misleading and then attached to stories that are about a completely different topic or just not true. These stories usually generate a lot of comments. If a lot of these comments call out the article for being fake or misleading, it probably is.
____19____ Are there noticeable grammatical errors? Know this -reliable sources have high prootreading and grammatical standards! Is the story of the celebrity current or recycled? Make sure an older story has not been taken out of context.
Remember, do not believe everything you see, read or hear. False news travels faster online than real news. ____20____ Read widely instead and consider the other side of a story. Ask, think and check whenever you read an article, hear an opinion or see a picture.
A. Guarantee correct grammar.
B. So how can we be smart online?
C. But lately, that hasn’t been the case.
D. Pay attention to quality and timeliness.
E. For example, abcnews.com is a legal news source.
F. You can use most search engines to find more information.
G. Do not define your opinions and views because of one article you have read.
B 17. E 18. C 19. D 20. G
根据前文“Everything that we read on the Internet may not always be true. People have constantly been complaining about lies in the media. ”(我们在互联网上读到的一切可能并不总是正确的。人们一直在抱怨媒体的谎言。)可知,对于网络上虚假的信息,人们对这种现象一直都在埋怨。下文“Here are some tips and tools”(这里有一些(辨别网络上虚假信息的)技巧和工具。)
根据前文“Many fake ones use similar URLs and domain names, but rather than using a “.com”, they use “.com.co” endings. ”(许多假冒的域名使用相似的 URL 和域名,但他们不使用“ . com”,而是使用“ . com.co”结尾。)可知,通过域名的形式可以区分网站的真假。因此空处应该承接前文,举出事例说明。选项E.“例如,abcnews.com 是一个合法的新闻来源。”以例子证实真正存在的网站的网址,且和下文“But abcnews. com.co is not!”(但是 abcnews. com.co不是!)
前文“Headlines are meant to get the readers’ attention and reflect what the story is about. ”(标题是为了吸引读者的注意力,反映故事的内容。)说明一般情形下,标题可以反映故事的内容,具有概括性。下文“Headlines are often written in exaggerated (夸张的) language with the intention of being misleading and then attached to stories that are about a completely different topic or just not true.”(新闻标题通常是用夸张的语言写的,目的是误导读者,然后附加到关于一个完全不同的主题或不真实的故事上。)
根据下文“Are there noticeable grammatical errors? Know this -reliable sources have high. prootreading and grammatical standards! Is the story of the celebrity current or recycled? Make sure an older story has not been taken out of context.”(是否有明显的语法错误? D.“Pay attention to quality and timeliness.”(注意质量和时间。)
根据前文“Remember, do not believe everything you see, read or hear. False news travels faster online than real news. ”(记住,不要相信你所看到的、读到的或听到的一切。假新闻在网上传播的速度比真新闻快。)可知,网上看到的某个信息可能会是假信息,因为假新闻在网上传播的速度比真新闻快。下文“Read widely instead and consider the other side of a story.”(要广泛阅读,并考虑故事的另一面。)
Silence is important for learning. I got it from my fourteen-month-old daughter Arielle.

As Christmas decorations appeared in town, our parents called my two younger brothers and me together. At first, I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.
Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won't be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.”Dad, resting on the couch, beckoned (招手示意) the boys into his arms.“Things will change when I get back to work.”
My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows, he didn't talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income.
At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night, after our parents’ announcement, we talked.
Rodney began. “Em, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked? I thought Mommy was gonna cry.
“Me, too. Daddy's foot’s … this big” whispered Stevie, holding out his arms.
“Yeah..We're in hard times," I said.“It makes Mommy and Daddy sad."
“But we don't have to be sad," I added, hoping to brighten the mood.
“Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up," I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank...earn some more..and surprise them with gifts!"
“I can run errands(跑腿) for Aunt Em and neighbors to earn money," I offered.
“Yeah," Rodney added, “I and Stevie can return bottles and save the deposit money... instead of buying candy!" He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow.
“Yeah!”Stevie clutched his hands together.
We had a plan!
Until they nodded off, I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret. “Don't talk about it during the day."

We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission! The following weeks saw me dashing home from school each day determined to earn a penny. I was usually greeted by secret winks and grins- one with a missing tooth, and the other with tiny, straight teeth- both assuring me our secret was safe. A few days before Christmas, we gleefully went shopping. We bought Mom a new apron, and for Dad, a pair of leather slippers. The night of Christmas Eve seemed endless. I awoke occasionally, or one of my brothers woke me asking, “How long till daylight?”
On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy. Surprised and stunned, they showered us with tons of confusing questions. “How did you..?” “Where did you..?” “Who gave you...?"" As we explained how we'd schemed, earned and saved our money, their faces relaxed into expressions of astonishment. Then, with glistening tears, Mom and Dad wrapped us three into their arms. On this special Christmas morning, with the five of us hugging, talking, laughing and listening with fresh affection and gratitude, I understood that rich or poor, we would keep together and be happy in one another.

A. His thoughtful plan before a birthday.
B. His different attitude towards travelling.
C. The death of his friend at an early age.
D. The adoption of Savannah from a shelter.
5. What can we know about the Turcich and Savannah according to the text?
A They spent most of nights in hotels during the trip.
B. Their journey has been recorded in Turcich’s book.
C. Their trip was once interrupted due to Turcich’s illness.
D. The most challenging place for them to walk through was Azerbaijan.

I got the opportunity to pursue an unmatchable educational vision at Stanford University. I was flooded with feelings of relief and excitement. It was a miracle that the American Dream had exposed its colors in my favor.
Upon arrival at the campus, ambition burned within me.

A. Keep reminding yourself of the need to remember your dreams.
B. Record what you can remember in your dreams upon awakening.
C. Improve the ability of your hippocampus to catch up information.
D. Think back on the things in your dreams directly after you wake up.

“Yeah..We're in hard times" I said.“It makes Mommy and Daddy sad."
