Robert was born on August 9, 1910 in the Netherlands. His mother came from a family of musicians and piano manufacturers, a fact that greatly influenced Robert’s life. His father was a physician in army, a position which required frequent foreign postings. The family stayed in various areas of East Asia for most of Robert’s youth. This experience contributed to his appreciation for cultures and mastery of several languages.
Robert was a hardworking academic, collector of art and manuscripts, and translator of ancient writings. He studied and trained to become a master musician on the Chinese guqin, and eventually wrote two books on the instrument. Similarly, his skills as an artist in the traditional Chinese style and knowledge of calligraphy were unparalleled. He wrote and published a number of non-fiction, scholarly articles and books on Chinese music, art, and literature, as well as Chinese culture and folk legends.
In 1940, Robert came across a little-known and anonymous (匿名的)18th-century Chinese novel that would take his career down an unplanned pathway and result in the public fame he never anticipated. The novel, titled Four Great Strange Cases of Empress Wu’s Reign, was a fictional account of the deeds of Judge Dee, one of the heroes of traditional Chinese detective fiction, and was set in the 7th-century Tang Dynasty. Fascinated, Robert not only translated the novel into English, he also did some research on the history of Chinese Penal Code and other legal literature of the period. It was not until 1949 that Robert was able to publish his translation —Dee Goong An: Three Murder Cases Solved by Judge Dee. Robert’s Chinese mysteries comprise over 10 novels and short-story volumes, recording the career of Chinese detective called Di Renjie. Interestingly, the tales first found fame in oriental (东方的)editions, before being translated into English in 1957.
Through all the novels by Robert, he impressively brings to life the sights and sounds of daily Chinese life in the past. His passionate devotion and respect for the Chinese culture was never discounted, yet he also appreciated the purpose of fiction.
24. What inspired Robert’s love for oriental culture?
A. His language competence. B. His mother’s good family background.
C. His previous stay in East Asia. D. His father’s professional medical knowledge.
25. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A. Robert’s passion for China. B. Robert’s early achievements.
C. Robert’s music proficiency. D. Robert’s learning experiences.
26. What contributed to Robert’s fame?
A. He introduced western civilization to China.
B. He polished an existing Chinese fiction style.
C. He spread Chinese literature to a wider audience.
D. He conducted research on famous Chinese detectives.
27. Which of the following can best describe Robert’s translations?
A. Vivid and faithful. B. Dramatic and realistic.
C. Accurate and humorous. D. Imaginary and accessible.

As psychologists (心理学家) have long recognised, we humans cope with negative things by employing psychological defences. These often take the form of self-serving biases (偏见) , that is, we tend to owe other people’s successes to good luck, while seeing our own good results as a sign of born talent. Another example is the ‘better-than-average’ effect, in which case we think we’re better than most others at various skills from driving to maths.
Getting defensive when we’re criticised, or when we make a mistake, is yet another of these self-protective mechanisms (机制). As the politicians so often say: “mistakes were made, but not by me”.
So, when you give someone negative feedback (反馈) or you criticise them or their beliefs, you are - perhaps unconsciously - threatening their psychological defences. By forcing them to recognise how they’ve mistaken, you’re likely to trigger extremely uncomfortable social emotions, such as a shame, guilt or embarrassment, or scary thoughts of rejection or loss of status. A way for people to avoid these uncomfortable feelings and thoughts is to get defensive, to deny they did anything wrong, or to engage in the mental gymnastics needed to save face.
Support for the social and moral aspects of defensiveness comes from a study by psychologists at Australia’s University of Flinders in 2020. The researchers showed that volunteers’ defensiveness (about past mistakes or possible moral guilt) was strengthened if they’d just had an experience of being socially rejected - thus making them more mentally weak. Contrarily, the volunteers acted less defensively if they’d had an earlier opportunity to demonstrate their moral values, which would have made them feel more secure about their moral standing.
One practical point from all this is that when you’re giving negative feedback, it pays to consider the effect it may have on the other person’s self-confidence. Therefore, focus your criticism on what they did wrong, not on their personality or character. You can also take some of the sting out by concentrating on how their mistake can be fixed or how they can improve next time, that way they’re less likely to take things so personally.
28. Why do people get so defensive when criticised?
A. To escape severe punishment. B. To refuse future improvement.
C. To demonstrate their being delicate. D. To avoid uncomfortable emotions.
29. What did the study by psychologists at the University of Flinders in 2020 find?
A. Social rejection increases defensiveness.
B. Expressing moral values increases defensiveness.
C. Giving advice on fixing one’s mistake hurts his confidence.
D. Focusing criticism on one’s personality decreases his defensiveness.
30. Which of the following is a proper time for giving negative feedback?
A. One has just failed in an exam. B. One has just received a job rejection.
C. One has just been beaten in a debate. D. One has just made a blood donation.
31. What is the main idea of the article?
A. People should avoid giving negative feedback to others.
B. People often use psychological defenses to cope with criticism.
C. The University of Flinders conducted a study on social rejection.
D. The better-than-average’ effect is a common psychological defense.
D
At Nature Fresh Farms in Leamington, Canada, there’s something new among the rows of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and strawberries. Using thousands of sensors in every greenhouse, artificial-intelligence technology is helping the farm better aspects such as lighting, irrigation and harvest timing, aiming to increase the yields of its crops and reduce its use of power and water. Farmers use drones (无人机) to survey farms and look for information on weeds, pests and disease.
A lot of research into AI and agriculture is done at institutions, but it then needs to be tested in a network of smart farms. One of the farms is Emili’s Innovation Farms. “We really show how they work in a commercial setting and in a way are being a bit of a risk mitigator (缓和) as we try out these technologies and then share with others, including other farmers, and how they actually work as a means to accelerate the adoption and full integration of those new technologies,” said Ms. Keena, managing director of Emili.
It takes time to find out whether new technology has affected a crop, and this can be a barrier to adoption for farmers. Sometimes it’s within a year, or within a few years. Ms. Keena said, “We can’t ask them to take big risks on integrating new technologies at scale as part of their operations in things that are unproven.” Innovation Farms addresses a piece of one of the barriers of people needing to be able to see these technologies rolled out in a full-scale and commercial way ahead of being able to adopt them themselves.
Farmers’ trust levels are also a barrier. Data are important to AI models, but farmers need to be better inspired to share their data in order to make the technology better. But over time, there’s an increase in engagement from farmers. “Farmer engagement is absolutely critical” to developing AI tools for agriculture. “If they’ve seen it demonstrated essentially in their backyard through a smart farm, well, then we’re that much further ahead toward adoption.”
32. What can be learned about AI from Paragraph 1?
A. It replaces employees. B. It shortens production cycle.
C. It adds vegetable diversity. D. It changes how farms run.
33. Why is AI technology tested at Emilli’s Innovation Farms?
A. To confirm its reliability. B. To expand its market.
C. To predict its future. D. To introduce its advantage.
34. What’s the key to removing the barriers?
A. Bettering AI models. B. Developing more AI tools.
C. Gaining farmers’ recognition. D. Enlarging the farm scales.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI: a promoter of farmers’ life
B. AI: a driver of agricultural development
C. Smart farms: good examples about AI adoption
D. Smart farms: pioneers in agricultural innovation

FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It refers to the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren’t invited or they just didn’t feel like going. ____36____ This belief, in turn, can create anxiety and a sense of inferiority. FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they’re often online.
One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing (重塑) thinking. ____37____ Here are some tips on how teens can start to reframe their thinking.
Track negative thoughts and replace them with reasonable ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal. ____38____ Then, they can change their thoughts and replace the negative thoughts with something positive.
____39____ Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend. But this does not mean that they’re necessarily missing out on something.
Turn off the technology and do something else. Turning off the technology seems like a natural cure for FOMO. But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes. ____40____ The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies — anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media.
A. Be realistic about availability.
B. There are some negative consequences of FOMO.
C. Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described in social media.
D. It’s a mental exercise designed to help them look at situations differently.
E. In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.
F. Teens may still worry about missing out even if they’re not in social media at all.
G. This allows them to observe how often they’re feeling negative about themselves.

故选A项。
根据第四段“Contrarily, the volunteers acted less defensively if they’d had an earlier opportunity to demonstrate their moral values, which would have made them feel more secure about their moral standing. (相反,如果志愿者有更早的机会展示自己的道德价值观,他们的防御行为就会减少,这会让他们对自己的道德地位感到更安全。)”可知,一个刚刚做过献血的人可能会感到道德上的满足和自信,因此这是一个适合给予负面反馈的时机。故选D项。
31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文尤其是根据第一段“As psychologists (心理学家) have long recognised, we humans cope with negative things by employing psychological defences. (心理学家早就认识到,我们人类通过心理防御来应对消极事物。)”可知,文章主要介绍了人们通过心理防御机制来应对批评。故选B项。
【答案】32. D 33. A 34.C 35. B
根据第一段中的“Using thousands of sensors in every greenhouse, artificial-intelligence technology is helping the farm better aspects such as lighting, irrigation and harvest timing, aiming to increase the yields of its crops and reduce its use of power and water. Farmers use drones(无人机) to survey farms and look for information on weeds, pests and disease.(在每个温室中使用数千个传感器,人工智能技术正在帮助农场改善照明、灌溉和收获时间等方面,旨在提高作物产量,减少电力和水的使用。农民使用无人机调查农场,寻找杂草、害虫和疾病的信息。)”可推测出,人工智能技术改变了农场的运营模式。故选D。
【33题详解】推理判断题。根据第二段中的“A lot of research into AI and agriculture is done at institutions, but it then needs to be tested in a network of smart farms. One of the farms is Emili’s Innovation Farms.(许多关于人工智能和农业的研究都是在机构进行的,但随后需要在智能农场网络中进行测试。其中一个农场是Emili的创新农场。)”和Emili的话“We really show how they work in a commercial setting and in a way are being a bit of a risk mitigator(缓和) as we try out these technologies and then share with others, including other farmers, and how they actually work as a means to accelerate the adoption and full integration of those new technologies(我们真的展示了它们在商业环境中是如何工作的,在某种程度上,当我们尝试这些技术并与包括其他农民在内的其他人分享时,它们在一定程度上是一种风险缓减器,以及它们是如何作为一种手段来加速这些新技术的采用和全面整合的)”可知,由于需要在智能农场中测试人工智能,所以选择了Emili的创新农场,结合Emili的话可推知,在Emili的创新农场测试人工智能是为了证实其可靠性。故选A。
根据第三段中的“It takes time to find out whether new technology has affected a crop, and this can be a barrier to adoption for farmers.(需要时间来确定新技术是否影响了作物,这可能会成为农民采用的障碍。)”“We can’t ask them to take big risks on integrating new technologies at scale as part of their operations in things that are unproven.(我们不能要求他们在未经证实的事情上大规模整合新技术,作为其运营的一部分。)”、最后一段中的“Farmers’ trust levels are also a barrier.(农民的信任程度也是一个障碍。)”“If they’ve seen it demonstrated essentially in their backyard through a smart farm, well, then we’re that much further ahead toward adoption.(如果他们看到它基本上是通过一个智能农场在他们的后院展示的,那么我们在采用方面就走得更远了。)”
G 39. A 40. F
【36题详解】根据指代关系可知,空格处句子需为下文“This belief ”提供指代对象,E项“In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.(一般来说,‘错失恐惧症’会让人们认为自己的社会地位较低)”中“they have a low social rank.”正是“This belief”指代对象,且认为自己的社会地位较低会造成“anxiety and a sense of inferiority(焦虑和自卑)”。故选E。
【37题详解】上文“One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing (重塑) thinking.(青少年应对FOMO的一种方法是练习所谓的重构思维)”提到“reframing (重塑) thinking”这一概念,D 项“It’s a mental exercise designed to help them look at situations differently.(这是一种心理训练, 旨在帮助他们从不同的角度看待情况)”是对这一概念的解释,且句中“look at situations differently”与上文“reframing (重塑) thinking”相照应,指“用另一种方式看待或思考问题”。故选D。
【38题详解】上文“One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal.(青少年可以做的一件事就是在日记中记录他们的消极想法和感受)”建议是青少年用日记的方式记录消极想法和感受,G 项“This allows them to observe how often they’re feeling negative about themselves.(这可以让他们观察到自己产生消极想法和感受的频率)”中This指代的正是“记录消极想法和感受”这种行为,且记录后就能观察到产生消极想法的频率,两句间有顺承关系。故选G 。
【39题详解】根据下文“Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend.(鼓励青少年认识到他们的时间是有限的,不可能无处不在,无所不能。因此,自然会有一些社交活动他们不能参加)”可知,青少年要认识到不是所有社交活动都能参加,因为自己时间有限,所以对参加社交活动的可能性要切合实际。A 项“Be realistic about availability.(对可能性要现实一点)”表达了同样意思,符合语境。故选A。
【40题详解】上文“But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes.(但是仅仅关掉手机并不能消除‘错失恐惧症’引起的感觉)”说关掉手机并不能消除“错失恐惧症”引起的焦虑和自卑,E项“Teens may still worry about missing out even if they’re not in social media at all.(即使不使用社交媒体,青少年可能仍然会担心错过机会)”解释了其原因,因为即使关掉手机,不使用社交媒体,青少年可能仍然会担心。故选F 。

M: Right, I’ll head there now. Thanks for your help.
Text 10
M: Well, the new Sea Life Center at Plymouth is an extremely exciting place. There are so many things to see and everything is enjoyable as well as educational. Special attractions for children include a quiz and hourly feeding times for all the different animals and fish starting at 9:30. You can see everything here from the most enormous sea creatures to the smallest. Every morning from 10:00 there are slide and video shows for children in the sea life theater, and someone is always there to answer questions about what you’ve seen. If you are in a group of six or more people, they can give you a special guided tour of the center. But you need to arrange this at the information desk when you arrive. The latest attraction at the center is a big glass tunnel you can walk through; all around you, you will see enormous fish swimming — sometimes even over your head. You certainly have the clearest possible view of the world beneath the waves. Children love it and it’s really amazing for adults too! When you get hungry, there is a relaxed family dining area serving snacks, cold drinks and ice creams. Near the main entrance there is an excellent bookshop and there’s also a souvenir shop selling all kinds of things connected with the sea. So I warmly recommend this visit.
