When chemist Robert Hamers cracked(打开) open the cup he had used to heat a brew of' metal crystals(晶体), he was greeted with something special: a wonderful small forest in deep shades of green.
The cobalt-containing crystals he had been growing for two weeks in a tool had vined their way upward from the base in a surprisingly familiar pattern and shade to match. It looked as if tiny elm trees, surrounded by shrubs and hedges, had been skillfully drawn inside the egg-shaped cup.
“I was completely awestruck,” said Hamers. “What really surprised me was, you look at it and you see a trunk is growing down from the bottom, and there are branches, and they are pretty well resolved.”
Hamers had set out to grow “a very large” crystal of lithium cobalt dioxide(二氧化钴锂),the material used in the batteries powering mobile phones, laptops, video cameras, and other electronic devices. He planned to use it to develop a fingerprint of the chemical in nature, through a technique known as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Once developed, the fingerprint could be used to scan landfill sites and other environments for the leaked chemical from discarded(丢弃的) batteries, tracing the chemical to its end of life.
There was a long lead up time to cracking open the sealed cup. First, a few bits of lithium cobalt oxide were put inside, an ink-black powder to the eye. Extremely high temperatures are required, reaching beyond 1,292 degrees Fahrenheit. Then the cooling begins: Larger crystals only form if the cooling period is extremely slow— in this case the scientists gave it two weeks. Ultimately, the experiment failed: The crystals that grew inside the cup weren't big enough for the tests Hamers wanted to do.
But his photo of the result won one of the awards of the university's Science Image Contest. Even failure can carry a touch of magic.
24. What was the outcome of Hamers experiment?
A. The crystals were big enough.
B. The crystals were dangerous to users.
C. The crystals formed a forest-like pattern.
D. The experiment was a complete success.
25. How did Hamers feel when he cracked open the cup?
A. Disappointed. B. Amazed. C. Doubtful. D. Relieved.
26. What was the main purpose of the chemical fingerprint Hamers wanted to develop?
A. To identify the crystal structure.
B. To enhance battery performance.
C. To improve crystal growth techniques.
D. To track the chemical in the environment.
27. What is the text meant to show us?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. You can't judge a book by its cover.
D. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

People need trees. A world without different trees, a world devoid of a wide range of trees would be much the poorer. We rely on trees, of course, to absorb and store carbon dioxide. They provide us with food, fuel, medicine and construction materials. They shelter us from storms; they reduce soil erosion(流失).
There are almost 58,500 tree species in the world, a richness few of us can truly comprehend. But a shocking new international study has warned that between a third and half of those are at risk of extinction in the wild— posing a risk of wider ecosystem collapse. The comprehensive report by botanic Gardens Conservation International, found that twice as many tree species are threatened as mammals, birds and reptiles(爬行动物) combined.
More than 440 have fewer than 50 individuals left in natural environments. Worse, even abundant trees that survive in many cases are greatly reduced. In Brazil, where around one in five tree species are at risk, deforestation in the Amazon has hit the highest annual level in a decade.
The chief reason for tree loss is the destruction of habitat by farming, raising animals and logging. Global heating and its consequences. from extreme weather to rising sea levels, are increasingly causing damage. Tropical island states are particularly affected, but the problems lie closer to home too. Just 30 Menai whitebeams remain in north Wales, the only place on Earth where they are found.
Protecting such habitats must be the priority. One study suggests that global tree cover has actually increased over recent decades, but 420 million hectares of forest were lost between 1990 and 2020. However important tree-planting plans may be, new plantations are no substitute for complex and biodiverse environments that have evolved over centuries.
Where forests have been erased, natural regeneration is often best. Failing that, planting a variety of species is better than simply relying on a tew fast-growing kinds of saplings(树苗). Only by working with communities can protection be sustainable. Preserving seeds in the hope that species can be brought back to life is necessary too. But it is a last resort. A seed bank cannot replace the rich life of a forest.
28. What does the underlined word “devoid” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Short. B. Full. C. Fond. D. Proud.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. There is no need to worry about tree loss.
B. The number of tree species is the largest.
C A large number of trees are at risk of extinction.
D. Protecting trees is more important than protecting animals.
30. What is the major cause of tree loss?
A. Global heating. B. Rising sea levels.
C. Extreme weather. D The destruction of habitat.
31. What is the best way to save an erased forest?
A. Planting a few fast-growing kinds of trees.
B. Regenerating forests naturally.
C. Building biodiverse environments.
D. Preserving seeds and establishing a seed bank.

The debate on whether smiling or frowning(皱眉) influences emotions has lasted for decades. Recently, researchers used electrical muscle stimulation to force participants' mouths into smiles or frowns, seeking a definitive answer. They found that the physical act of these expressions directly impacts emotions, making people feel more positive or negative.
Sebastian Korb, a psychology lecturer at the University of Essex, notes that the idea that the body shapes emotions is old but not universally accepted. This concept has roots in the19th century, with Charles Darwin and William James suggesting that physiological changes affect emotions. In the 20th century. researchers focused on facial expressions. leading to the “facial feedback hypothesis(假说)” in the 1970s. However, this hypothesis has received mixed support.
A 1988 German study, known as the pen task, found that participants who held a pen between their teeth (facilitating a smile) found cartoons funnier than those who held it between their lips (forming a kiss-like expression). This supported the facial feedback hypothesis.
In the new study. Korb and his team used electrical stimulation to target specific facial muscles. They placed electrodes(电极) on 58 participants and gradually increased the current until it caused a smile or frown. Participants were exposed to various conditions, including looking at a blank screen, a happy image, and a depressing image while smiling or frowning. They also underwent experiments with weaker stimulations that didn't produce visible facial movements.
The researchers found connections between participants’ facial features and their feelings when stimulated strongly. The strongest connection was when smiles were paired with positive images. Even without accompanying imagery, participants felt happier when stimulated to smile and sadder when forced to frown, although the effect was not massive. Korb emphasized that they only activated certain muscles for a short duration.
Heather Lench. a professor of psychological and brain sciences at Texas A&-M University, who was not involved in the research. says the new study was done well and “opens up a new way to make facial expressions”.
32. What method was used to force smiles or frowns on participants in the new study?
A. Facial exercises. B. Emotional recall.
C. Pen holding technique. D. Electrical muscle stimulation.
33. Who proposed that how our body feels change our emotions?
A. Sebastian Korb. B. Heather Lench.
C. Charles Darwin and William James. D. Researchers in the 20th century.
34. What is Heather Lench's attitude towards the new study?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. indifferent. D. Critical.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Facial Expressions Have a Long History
B. Gestures are Useful to Boost Your Emotions
C. Facial Expressions Directly Impact Emotions
D. Psychology Is Important in Changing Emotions

The harmonica(口琴) is small, light, and often cheap enough to buy. It's no wonder that when the harmonica was first introduced into the United States, it became a huge trend.
The harmonica was invented in the 1820s as an aid for tuning pianos. 36 That drove the industry to poorer parts of Europe, where workers shifted back and forth between working in traditional agriculture and taking industrial jobs. By the early twentieth century. almost all harmonicas came from two remote parts of Germany, Klingenthal and Trossingen. These two towns produced 30 million harmonicas in 1913.
The market for the instruments was mostly across the Atlantic. As large numbers of Germans emigrated(移民) to the US in the mid-nineteenth century, harmonica-makers carried their products with them. At first, the customers were mainly German-Americans、who bought harmonicas as souvenirs of home. 37 Hohner, a major Trossingen producer, went from making 87,000 instruments in 1880 to 2.1 million in 1892, with ninety percent of its sales in North America.
38 In part, the instrument showed up at the right time. In the years after the American Civil War, the country was industrializing rapidly, families had higher incomes, and mail-order catalogues(邮购目录) were on the rise. 39. Selling for as little as five or ten cents by the end of the nineteenth century, harmonicas were affordable for many people who couldn't buy a traditional instrument. They were also easy to play with no need for expensive music lessons. Harmonicas became popular as gifts for children, and as pocketable instruments for World War I soldiers.
Musicians from a range of backgrounds adapted the harmonica to their musical traditions. Most significantly, the harmonica found its way into the blues, which emerged as a new genre starting in the 1870s. 40
A But in the 1880s、sales took off.
B. How did the harmonicas influence Americans?
C. The harmonica was also an accessible intonement.
D. Why did so many Americans buy harmonicas?
E And now comes a problem that many beginning harmonica players encounter.
F. However, making the instruments was hard work, and demand was inconsistent.
G. The German instrument turned into a must-have for a type of music that is very American.

On Thanksgiving Eve, Emily, the owner of a warm café, was closing up after a busy day. Since her husband's passing a few years ago, she had spent every Thanksgiving as a lonely figure, her son living away for college and only occasionally calling.
As she turned the sign to “Closed”, preparing to face another lonely holiday, she spotted a man sitting on the cold steps outside. He seemed to be in his late forties, dressed in old clothes, his face marked with the lines of hardship. He looked up, his eyes reflecting a mixture of tiredness and unspoken struggles. “Excuse me, Miss,” he whispered, “I haven’ t had a decent meal in days. Could you maybe spare a bit?” Emily hesitated briefly but quickly unlocked the door, inviting him in with a warm gesture. “It's Thanksgiving Eve,” she said with a gentle smile, “No one should go hungry today.”
The man, who introduced himself as James, gratefully took a seat by the corner window.: Emily prepared a big and hearty meal: warm pumpkin pie, freshly baked bread, and a roast turkey. As James ate, he shared bits and pieces of his life— once a truck driver, he had lost his job and subsequently his home, leading him to wander from place to place. Emily listened intently, feeling an unexpected wave of compassion(同情) as she connected with this stranger.
When the meal was finished, James reached into his worn-out jacket and pulled out a small, carefully folded paper crane(鹤). “I made this a long time ago,” he said softly. “It's the last one I have. I want you to have it, as a token of your kindness today.” Touched by the gesture, Emily thanked him and, on a whim(一时兴起), offered James a part-time job at the café. James's eyes welled up with tears of gratitude. “I'd be pleased,” he replied.
