The World’s oldest pen pals have both turned 100 after 84 years of transatlantic(跨大洋) letters.
Geoff Banks from Honiton, Devon, UK and Celesta Byrne, from the US, started writing to each other aged just 16 in 1938. They met as part of an educational project to put British and American students in contact-and 84 years later they are still contacting.
Geoff, a retired engineer, said, “I can’t quite remember how we got in touch, but I was talking to Celesta recently and I think it was something to do with an American school’s plan, which matched us up with Americans for a pen pal relationship, and somehow I ended up with this letter from an American girl, and we just kept contacting ever since. There were a couple of years when we tried very hard to keep in touch because of the war. Now of course she is poorly sighted, so I contact mainly by email to one of her daughters who lives nearby. Email is much easier for me these days too because I can’t write very well anymore. We just talk about daily lives and our families. She’s always been there to write to, even if it was just birthday cards and Christmas cards.”
Though having chatted for over 80 years, the pair has only ever met twice-first in 2002 while Geoff visited New York, and then two years later. Geoff is now a great grandfather, having three sons settling across the world and many more grandchildren. “I have this new thing called Zoom I think now to chat with her, but I leave all the technology to younger people. They’re much better at pressing all the buttons.”
4. What may bring Geoff and Celesta to be pen pals?
A. The world war. B. Geoff’s visit to New York.
C. An American school’s plan. D. Communication technology.
5. Why did Geoff use email to write letters later?
A. He relied on Zoom to chat. B. He was unable to write well.
C. He suffered from eye disease. D. He wrote to Celesta’s daughter.
6. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Pen pals are true friends.
B. Technology builds friendship.
C. Letters were not allowed during the war.
D. True friendship survives time and space.
7. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Oldest Pen Pals in the World. B. A Great Way to Keep in Touch.
C. Importance of Being Pen Pals. D. Zoom: A New Technology to Chat.

One popular tool to help people understand their influence on climate change is a carbon footprint calculator (碳足迹计算器). There are many of these calculators online. You can enter details like what type of transportation you use to go to work, how often you eat red meat, and if you wash your clothes in cold water.
But some people think that focusing on your carbon footprint is not very useful. Instead, a new idea called the climate shadow (阴影) has become popular. This idea was first introduced by a writer named Emma Pattee from Portland, Oregon. The climate shadow looks at all of a person's choices and their influence on the planet. The bigger the shadow, the more positive influence a person has on the planet.
Pattee explained her idea, “Your climate shadow is like a dark shape that follows you everywhere. It counts not only how much air conditioning you use and how much gas your car uses, but also how you vote, how many children you have, where you work, how you invest your money, how much you talk about climate change, and whether your words make people feel urgent, indifferent, or in denial about climate change.”
For example, if you put solar panels (太阳能电池板) on your roof, your carbon footprint might get smaller. But your climate shadow would get bigger if you talk to your neighbors about your choice. Even just having solar panels on your roof can influence your neighbors to get their own. Studies show that people are more likely to install solar panels if their neighbors have them.
In other words, the climate shadow idea encourages actions that inspire others. Your climate shadow grows when your actions, even unknowingly, motivate others to take positive steps for the planet.
8. Who introduced the idea of the climate shadow?
A. An environmental organization. B. A government organization.
C. Emma Pattee. D. A group of scientists from Portland.
9. What does climate shadow focus more on compared with carbon footprint?
A. The practical result. B. The use of energy.
C. The scientific meaning. D. The social influence.
10. What does the underlined word “install” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Replace. B. Fix. C. Sell. D. Improve.
11. What is the best title for this text?
A. Understanding Your Climate Shadow B. Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
C. The Benefits of Solar Panels D. How to Use a Carbon Footprint Calculator
D
In the past five years, a revolution (革命) has gathered pace in the transport sector. Electric cars have hit the mainstream.
The latest figures released on 26 April by the International Energy Agency (IEA) suggest almost one-in-five new cars sold worldwide this year will be either a full-battery or plug-in hybrid (插电式混合动力) models. In total, 14 million of these kinds of vehicles are expected to be sold this year, up from around a million in 2017.
This explosive growth is a testament to industry innovation and government interventions (干预). Falling battery costs have delivered longer-range cars, boosting their consumer appeal. Meanwhile, government policies, including upcoming restrictions on the sale of new petrol and diesel (柴油) cars in some countries, have caused people to choose zero-emission driving.
But although electrification of the global vehicle fleet brings climate benefits, there is also cause for concern. SUVs have been growing in popularity in recent years, accounting for 42% of all car sales in 2020. At the same time, electric SUVs have also gained ground, representing roughly 35% of electric passenger car sales in 2022.
Electric SUVs are still greener than their petrol and diesel counterparts, but their size and weight erase some of the climate gains from moving to electric vehicles. Their larger batteries also require more raw minerals, putting extra pressure on already stretched global supplies. “The trend towards larger cars is definitely not desirable at all,” says Christian Brand from the University of Oxford.
Air pollution is another worry. “The benefit of moving to an electric vehicle, from an exhaust (废气) emission point of view is pretty small,” says Frank Kelly from Imperial College London. And since electric vehicles still produce pollution from their tyres, brakes and road wear, air pollution won’t fully go away. “We’re still going to have a pretty big problem in our cities,” says Kelly.
As such, governments must do more to reduce car dependency, particularly in urban areas, says Kelly. “Clean public transport is the solution to our air pollution problem in urban areas.” he says.
12. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How the car industry transformed.
B. Why people turn to electric vehicles.
C. A prediction of the car industry’s future.
D. A comparison between electric vehicles and traditional ones.
13. Which of the following can best replace the underlined part “gained ground” in paragraph 4?
A. Met with opposition. B. Control the market.
C. Made significant progress. D. Gone into gradual decline (下降).
14. What does Kelly suggest people do?
A. Use public transport. B. Share cars with others.
C. Stop using petrol vehicles. D. Choose smaller electric vehicles.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Electric vehicles are rapidly taking off — but is that a good thing?
B. The future of electric vehicles and material resources?
C. How green are electric vehicles? Well, that depends.
D. Did SUVs just win the electric vehicle market?

With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year-old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, “No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK?”
Holding her oil painting, she frowned (皱眉), and then searched for her dad.
“Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin announced aloud in an exciting voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”
He smiled at her saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔); her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed (把……砰地关上) the door and threw herself on her bed.
“Why is everybody so busy?” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too! She thought at least her own family members would respect her feelings, but they were no exception. At the thought of this, her eyes were filled with tears.
Then the knocking sound on the door stopped her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately (故意地) came late to join them. She kept silent and didn’t look at anyone, scratching (挠) the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident came to her mind. Softly, she asked, “Honey, did I do anything wrong?”

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. A

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“In other words, the climate shadow idea encourages actions that inspire others. Your climate shadow grows when your actions, even unknowingly, motivate others to take positive steps for the planet.(换句话说,气候阴影的想法鼓励了激励他人的行动。当你的行动,甚至在不知不觉中,激励他人为地球采取积极措施时,你的气候阴影就会增加。)”可知,相比于碳足迹概念,气候阴影这个概念聚焦于人们的行为对其他人的社会影响。故选D。
【10题详解】

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. A

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Paragraph 2:
The next morning, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated painting on the wall.

【答案】 At this very moment, Sirin could no longer control her feelings. “Why is everybody so busy?” she roared, tears streaming down her face. She assumed that her mom and dad would feel proud of her great talent and would appreciate her painting but she was disgusted with the words “no time”. “I hate you!” She screamed, grabbed the painting on the table and tore it in half. Shocked, her mom threw her arms around her tightly, saying regretfully and firmly, “Baby, I am so sorry! I promise this mistake will not be repeated.”
The next morning, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated painting on the wall. It was beautifully framed and just below the painting, it was written “We are so proud of you, our little girl!” On seeing it, she burst out crying. She ran to her mom and hugged her tightly, fully aware of her mom’s love. Recalling her mom’s stress from work and daily life, she was regretting her previous behavior. She ducked her head, apologizing, “Sorry, Mom!” It dawned on them that though everything came and went, mutual understanding would stay forever in their family.
【解析】
