Teachers can now register their classrooms for a student-led global project aimed at empowering teenagers to design their own strategies to tackle plastic pollution.
Overview
The project’s name, created by an environmental explorer and project founder, symbolizes the systematic reduction of disposable (用后即丢弃的) plastics through changing norms and behaviors to address the root causes of pollution. The goal is to reach 25 countries within three years. The English version launched in 2023 has already attracted over 65 schools from 23 countries.
Timeline
The project will officially open for registration to English-speaking students this summer. Classrooms participating in the project will be led by teachers and supported by the project team in a three-month period. During the time, student teams will design practical strategies to address plastic pollution in their communities. Students will also have the opportunity to showcase their solutions and interact with like-minded peers from around the world at a festival in Florida next November, either in person or virtually.
Details
Interested teachers and school administrators can register their classrooms for the English version of the project by visiting the relevant website. The project uses a project-based learning approach and targets students aged 15-16, aiming to make young people the main drivers of their learning. If a wheelchair malfunctions, it’s like a body catching a cold. For Zhu Siwei, a “wheelchair doctor”, diagnosing (诊断) these issues has become second nature.
At 33, Zhu brought his expertise to the world stage in the summer of 2024 at the Paris Paralympics (残奥会), where he worked at both the Paralympic Village and competition venues. As part of a technical team, Zhu offered service to athletes and officials from around the globe, keeping their equipment in top shape.
Zhu describes how each technician on the team brings their own expertise — some specialize in sewing, others in welding (焊接). “Many of the technicians from other countries have years of experience and a deep understanding of wheelchair repair,” Zhu says. “It’s a rare and valuable opportunity to work alongside them.”
In the Paralympic Village, Zhu sometimes found himself going beyond his official duties. When a motorized suitcase that an athlete was using for mobility wouldn’t charge, even though it wasn’t his responsibility, Zhu stepped in to help solve the problem. He could sense the athletes’ appreciation after fixing their wheelchairs, their gratitude unmistakable in their eyes.
With a decade of experience in wheelchair repair, Zhu has observed the continual development of the equipment used by disabled individuals. As the wheelchairs change, Zhu recognizes the importance of improving his repair skills alongside them.
Wang Tiegang, Zhu’s colleague during the Paris Paralympics, has also witnessed firsthand the advancements in equipment for people with disabilities. “We’re gradually moving toward high-tech solutions,” Wang says. “This year, we’ve integrated 3D printing technology on-site, and new wheelchairs are becoming lighter. The demands on welding techniques are also growing, so we’re committed to ongoing learning.”
This year, Zhu has taken on a new initiative for individuals with disabilities. “When a wheelchair breaks down, it’s often much more challenging for someone with a disability to go out and find a repair shop compared to able-bodied individuals. They also tend to have their own circles,” Zhu explains. “We teach them simple repair techniques, enabling them to assist one another with basic fixes.”
4. What does Zhu Siwei do?
A. He is a coach. B. He is a doctor. C. He is an athlete. D. He is a technician.
5. What is suggested about Zhu Siwei in paragraph 4?
A. He was athletic and emotional. B. He was overburdened by work.
C. He was misunderstood by others. D. He was warm-hearted and helpful.
6. What do Wang Tiegang and Zhu Siwei both attach importance to?
A. Continuous learning. B. Innovative equipment.
C. The demands of the athletes. D. The well-being of the disabled.
7. What is the purpose of Zhu Siwei’s new initiative?
A. To attract more able-bodied individuals to help the disabled.
B. To encourage social connections between the disabled.
C. To reduce the living costs for those with disabilities.
D. To promote self-reliance of those with disabilities.

Microplastics are inescapable. In the human body, they’ve shown up in blood and lungs. Now, scientists have also discovered the tiny pollutants in brain tissue, specifically the olfactory bulb (嗅球) that sits above the nose. They shared their findings on Monday.
Humans have two olfactory bulbs located in the forebrain, which are connected to each nasal cavity (鼻腔) by the olfactory nerve. Olfactory bulbs help detect and process smells, passing information from the nose to the brain. Microplastics have been found in human brains, according to recent research that has not yet been peer-reviewed.
The new findings raise concerns among researchers that the olfactory pathway might allow microplastics to access the brain and potentially reach brain areas beyond the olfactory bulb.
For the study, the team sampled olfactory bulb tissue from 15 patients. The patients in the study had died at ages ranging from 33 to 100. Eight of the samples contained microplastics, or bits of plastic less than five millimeters long. The researchers found 16 total plastic fibers and particles (微粒) made of some chemical substances. The most common was a type of plastic that’s used widely in clothes, furniture, rugs, packaging and more.
The microplastics the researchers found are “much smaller than those of several other studies that have determined the presence of microplastics in human organs, such as kidneys, liver, etc,” study co-author Luis Fernando Amato-Lourenco says. The findings don’t come as a surprise to the team, considering the common presence of microplastics. In addition, the nose’s job is to prevent dust, particles and other substances from reaching the lungs, so it makes sense that nasal tissue would also capture tiny plastics.
But it remains unclear whether microplastics can reach the brain via the olfactory pathway. The potential consequences of having microplastics in the human body are also mostly unknown, though some studies suggest they could be harmful to human health. The particles are there, but we don’t know anything about what they’re doing.
8. What is the role of the olfactory bulb?
A. It helps find and deal with smells. B. It clears the air’s dust and particles.
C. It connects the nasal cavities to the lungs. D. It prevents microplastics from entering the brain.
9. What might show the existence of microplastics in human brains?
A. The very sticky blood in human brains. B. The sensitivity of the olfactory pathway.
C. The detection of microplastics in the lungs. D. The presence of microplastics in the olfactory bulb.
10. What was the main finding of the study in paragraph 4?
A. The size of the microplastics. B. The age range of the patients.
C. The variety of microplastics found around. D. The universality of microplastics in the samples.
11. What can we infer about the probable results of microplastics?
A. They require further research. B. They are well understood and documented.
C. They have nothing to do with human health. D. They have been proven to cause significant harm.
D
First-edition copies of Jane Austen’s completed novels are on display in the home where the beloved author spent years writing and revising. The rare books are part of a new Permanent exhibition, “Jane Austen and the Art of Writing”, at her family’s former cottage in Chawton, a village located some 50 miles from London. Austen lived in the house during the last eight years of her life. She wrote or revised all six of her completed novels there: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.
For the first time all six first-edition novels will be on display together at Jane Austen’s House, which is now a museum. They include a copy of Emma, copies of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, and a copy of Sense and Sensibility with the publisher’s original binding.
The novels appear on display in a 12-sided case built for the new installation, a tribute to Austen’s small 12-sided wooden table she often worked at. They deserve it. The rare books are part of the museum’s preparations for the beloved author’s 250th birthday celebrations in December 2025. Lizzie Dunford, director of the museum, is excited for visitors to have the unique opportunity to be quite literally surrounded by the books and objects that influenced Austen.
The show also features other objects from Austen’s life that are connected to her writing. Additionally, some of Austen’s letters are on view at the exhibition, which examines how her correspondence and love of letter-writing informed her fiction. Visitors will also see a film about The Watsons, one of Austen’s unfinished novels, and how the original manuscript (手稿) throws light on her writing process.
“This exhibition is a deep dive into Jane Austen’s creative process,” says Sophie Reynolds, the head of collections, interpretation and engagement at the museum. “We hope that it will unlock a new way for our visitors to understand Jane Austen as a dedicated, driven and professional writer, and to explore how her life and living arrangements affected her writing in the very house in which she lived and wrote.”
12. What is the focus of the exhibition?
A. The history of the museum. B. The life and works of Jane Austen.
C. The design of Jane Austen’s House. D. The birth and evolution of English literature.
13. What does the underlined word “tribute” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Loss. B. Threat. C. Honor. D. Insurance.
14. What does Sophie Reynolds try to convey about the exhibition in the last paragraph?
A. Its preparations. B. Its barriers. C. Its process. D. Its purpose.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Reveal Jane Austen’s Family and Early Life.
B. Jane Austen’s Original Letters Are on Show.
C. Celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday with Exhibits.
D. Jane Austen’s Finished and Unfinished Novels Are Published.

“Jimmy, what — what are you saying?” Elma’s voice trembled as she spoke. The nervousness in her voice drew the attention of Mark, the driver who was driving the bus. The 78-year-old woman had boarded just as her phone rang. Mark was always nice to the passengers, which made them respond very warmly to him. It was not the first time he had picked Elma up from the bus stop, and they had exchanged pleasantries a couple of times, so when he heard the misery in her voice, he was naturally concerned.
“OK, Jimmy. I will withdraw all the money from the bank,” Mark continued to “eavesdrop (偷听)”. “What could be going on?” Mark thought within himself.
“Are you okay?” he asked as soon as Elma ended the call.
“It was just my grandson, Jimmy. He was arrested,” Elma replied.
“What? That’s terrible!” Mark said, trying his best to keep the conversation between him and Elma while making sure she could actually hear him. Then Elma sat directly behind him. Mark asked Elma to remain on the bus while he completed his circuit so they could figure things out afterward. Half an hour later, they came to a cafe.
“Jimmy was arrested for robbery and needs 35 thousand dollars to get bailed (保释) but he has no such amount,” Elma told Mark all the details.
“Hold on! Robbery? 35 thousand? For bail?” Mark asked. Knowing the bail for robbery shouldn’t cost that much, Mark felt something was off.
Elma added that Jimmy was a free-spirited young man with a love for travel. Recently he was far away in a mountainous area where there was no signal. “I’ve been his only guardian ever since his parents passed away. I’m all he’s got. My grandson wouldn’t hurt a fly,” Elma said.
This fueled Mark’s initial suspicion — he had been hearing stories of scams (诈财骗局) involving elderly people, especially grandparents, as victims.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Figuring something wasn’t right, Mark offered to help.

In the Paralympic Village Zhu sometimes found himself going beyond his official duties.
Wang Tiegang Zhu’s colleague during the Paris Paralympics, has also witnessed firsthand the advancements in equipment for people with disabilities.

The potential consequences of having microplastics in the human body are also mostly unknown though some studies suggest they could be harmful to human health.
A The size of the microplastics.

For the first time, all six first-edition novels will be on display together at Jane Austen’s House, which is now a museum.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Mark was thinking of other ways to help Elm a see through the trap when he caught sight of a policeman on the street.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Figuring something wasn’t right. Mark offered to help. He asked Elma to make a return call to the number her grandson used to reach her. Mark was shocked to find the voice on the line belonged to a man who claimed he didn’t know Elma personally. Mark became more suspicious that it was a scam. Elma couldn’t wait to get to the bank as quickly as possible to withdraw all the cash she’d got to bail her beloved grandson. Mark insisted Elma at least try to verify before making such a hasty decision. However, it seemed that nothing he said would change her mind. Mark decided to switch strategies to help her.
Mark was thinking of other ways to help Elma see through the trap when he caught sight of a policeman on the street. He turned to him and said. “Officer, I have an issue here that needs your informed judgment.” Mark told the policeman everything, who soon confirmed it was indeed a scam after failing to confirm the case on the police servers. Only then did Elma believe that she was being scammed, and she decided not to withdraw her money. The policeman praised Marks behavior of “eavesdropping”. In relief, Mark then took Elma back home. A week after the event, Mark received a gift from Elma with a note that read, “Thank you, Mark. I got a call from my grandson later that day.”
