Three children in every classroom are reported to have mental health condition. Half of these are behavioral disorders, while one third are emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety, which often become obvious through self-harm.
There was a surprising 52 percent jump in hospital admissions for children and young people who had harmed themselves between 2009 and 2015. Schools and teachers have continuously reported the problem since 2009. Last year, over half the teachers reported that more of their students experienced mental health problems than in the past.
But teachers also continuously report how ill-equipped they feel to meet students’ mental health needs, and often mention lack of training and support from the National Health Service. Part of the reason for the increased pressure on schools is that there are now fewer ‘early intervention (干预)’ and low-level mental health services based in the community. Cuts to local authority budgets (预算) since 2010 have resulted in a dramatic reduction of these services, despite strong proof of their effectiveness in preventing problems happening again. The only way to break the pressures on both mental health services and schools is to put more money in early intervention services inside schools.
There are strong arguments for why schools are best places to provide mental health services. Schools see young people more than any other service, which gives them a unique ability to get to hard-to-reach children and to build meaningful relationships with them over time. Recent studies have shown that children and young people largely prefer to see an adviser in school rather than in an outside environment. Young people have reported that for low-level conditions such as stress and anxiety, a hospital setting can sometimes be frightening.
There are already examples of creative schools which connect mental health with school courses. This will, though, require a huge cultural change. Politicians and school leaders must be brave enough to change schools into providers of health as well as education services.
4. Why does the author list a series of figures in the first two paragraphs?
A. To require more school equipment.
B. To compare the rates of emotion disorders.
C. To show the tendency of behavioral disorders.
D. To stress the seriousness of school mental health.
5. What has contributed to a drop in community mental health services?
A. Ineffective prevention measures. B. Government’s Budget reduction.
C. Students’ better mental health. D. Increased pressure from teachers.
6. Why are schools ideal places for children’s mental health care?
A. Children receive the best service in school.
B. Schools are similar to hospitals in reducing anxiety.
C. Schools are perfect for children to build relationships.
D. Children are more comfortable seeking advice at school.
7. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Are Communities Responsible for Students’ Mental Health?
B. Do Communities Lack Money for Students’ Mental Health?
C. Are Schools Responsible for Students’ Mental Health?
D. Can Schools be Helpful in Students’ Mental Health?
C
Which is healthier: a pizza or a vegetable salad? That is an easy question. Now which is healthier: a pizza made by yourself or one made from the same basic ingredients (配料), pulled out of a box in the fridge?
Many people concerned with what they eat would immediately say the former perhaps mentioning an unclear concern with “processed food”. Such food can often be delicious. And there is much to cheer about: being cheap and plentiful calories, when for most of human history they were neither. But Chris van Tulleken’s new book, “Ultra-Processed People”, explains that cheapness and plentifulness come at a cost.
Mr van Tulleken, a doctor and television presenter, tells the difference between “ultra-processed food” (UPF) and “processed food”. Almost everything people eat is processed in some form: rice is harvested, animals are butchered (屠宰). He uses an idea proposed by Carlos Monteiro, a food scientist, describing UPF as “products of ingredients, mostly of only industrial use, made by a series of industrial processes, many requiring advanced equipment and technology”.
The additives in UPF harm people in a range of ways both known and unknown. Calorie-rich but usually nutrient-poor, UPF contributes to overweight in part because its delicious taste and soft mouthfeel lead to overeating.
Because this food is cheap to produce and buy, UPF replaces healthier choices, particularly for poor people. Extra weight was once a sign of wealth, but among British and American women today, overweight rates are higher at lower-income levels.
Environment matters, too. People living in places where “UPF is everywhere but real food is hard to reach” could spend large amounts of time and money seeking out fresh food, but that is not how most people live. There is nothing wrong with the strange fast-food trip, but anyone who can afford to eat less UPF probably should.
8. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By presenting facts. B. By listing figures.
C. By raising questions. D. By making comparisons.
9. Which of the following will Mr van Tulleken probably agree with?
A. UPF is delicious and healthy. B. Almost all food is processed.
C. Processed food is unhealthy. D. UPF is the same as processed food.
10. Which one is the cost of “ultra-processed food”?
A. Delicious taste and overeating. B. Soft mouthfeel and poor nutrition.
C. Poor nutrition and overweight. D. Industrial processes and overweight.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the “Ultra-processed food”?
A. Hopeful. B. Unclear. C. Negative. D. Positive.
D
It’s good to share, right? Growing up as kids we are told to share our toys and not to be selfish. We also live in an age when discussing our feelings is encouraged. But with new crazes becoming popular all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a pillow (枕头) as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media?
Oversharing has become connected with social media, but isn’t unique to it. Imagine you head to a party and meet someone. Within five minutes they have given away very detailed information about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage expert Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to get close to someone. A painful developmental story lies behind the behaviour. People share too much because they have been too lonely. But they fail to understand the risks resulting from it.
Dr Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology (网络心理学), says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy (同情) we express when things go wrong. This could be due to a belief that more negative experiences will be attracted if shared more. It seems that sadfishing, the idea of seeking sympathy by oversharing, is generally regarded as negative rather than the cry for help.
However, Dr Hand’s research also seems to suggest that the more we post online, the more socially attractive we become on condition that the posts we share are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD, said we should avoid complaining too much and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense— if your love lives are going ‘that well’, would you really have time to share a photo with text?
So, how can you know if you are oversharing? Well, why not ask your friends in real life? They would be happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are too much.
12. Which of the following is a kind of oversharing?
A. Disclosing personal details quickly at a party. B. Discussing our feelings online.
C. Sharing our toys with kids unselfishly. D. Recording our feelings in the diary.
13. Why do people share too much according to Carolyn Cole?
A. To satisfy their psychological needs. B. To overcome the sense of failure.
C. To show their feeling of sympathy. D. To develop a painful story.
14. What do you know about sadfishing?
A. It is an idea of sharing positive experiences. B. It is generally thought of as a cry for help.
C. It is seen as a positive way to seek help. D. It is intended to attract sympathy.
15. What does the underlined sentence imply in Paragraph 4?
A. People having good love lives are too busy to post online.
B. Sharing photos and texts about love lives makes sense.
C. People won’t have successful love if posting it online.
D. Good love lives shouldn’t be shared on social media.

6 Why are schools ideal places for children’s mental health care?
D 5. B 6. D 7. D

根据第一段“Three children in every classroom are reported to have mental health condition. Half of these are behavioral disorders, while one third are emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety, which often become obvious through self-harm. (据报告,每个班级有三名儿童有精神健康问题。其中一半是行为障碍,而三分之一是压力和焦虑等情绪障碍,这些障碍往往通过自残而变得明显)”、第二段中“There was a surprising 52 percent jump in hospital admissions for children and young people who had harmed themselves between 2009 and 2015. (2009年至2015年期间,因自残而入院的儿童和青少年人数惊人地增加了52%)”和“Last year, over half the teachers reported that more of their students experienced mental health problems than in the past. (去年,超过一半的教师报告说,与过去相比,他们的学生有更多的心理健康问题)”可知,这些数据表明遭遇精神健康问题的儿童比例很高,且有自残倾向,同时这一比例还在不断上升。由此可知,作者提到这些数据是为了突出学校心理健康问题的严重性。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Cuts to local authority budgets (预算) since 2010 have resulted in a dramatic reduction of these services, despite strong proof of their effectiveness in preventing problems happening again. (自2010年以来,地方政府预算的削减导致了这些服务的大幅减少,尽管有强有力的证据表明这些服务在防止问题再次发生方面是有效的)”可知,政府削减预算导致社区心理健康服务减少。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Recent studies have shown that children and young people largely prefer to see an adviser in school rather than in an outside environment. Young people have reported that for low-level conditions such as stress and anxiety, a hospital setting can sometimes be frightening. (最近的研究表明,儿童和年轻人在很大程度上更喜欢在学校而不是在外面的环境中看顾问。年轻人报告说,对于压力和焦虑等低水平症状,医院的环境有时会令人恐惧)”可知,学校是儿童心理健康护理的理想场所,是因为孩子们在学校里更愿意寻求建议。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第三段中“The only way to break the pressures on both mental health services and schools is to put more money in early intervention services inside schools.
C
Which is healthier: a pizza or a vegetable salad? That is an easy question. Now which is healthier: a pizza made by yourself or one made from the same basic ingredients (配料), pulled out of a box in the fridge?
Many people concerned with what they eat would immediately say the former, perhaps mentioning an unclear concern with “processed food”.
C Poor nutrition and overweight. D. Industrial processes and overweight.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the “Ultra-processed food”?
A. Hopeful. B. Unclear. C. Negative. D. Positive.
C 9. B 10. C 11. C

Now which is healthier: a pizza made by yourself or one made from the same basic ingredients, pulled out of a box in the fridge?
根据第三段中“Mr van Tulleken, a doctor and television presenter, tells the difference between “ultra-processed food” (UPF) and “processed food”. Almost everything people eat is processed in some form: rice is harvested, animals are butchered. (van Tulleken先生是一名医生和电视节目主持人,他告诉我们“超加工食品”(UPF)和“加工食品”之间的区别。人们吃的几乎所有东西都经过某种形式的加工:大米被收割,动物被屠宰)”可推知,他认为几乎所有食物都经过加工。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Calorie-rich but usually nutrient-poor, UPF contributes to overweight in part because its delicious taste and soft mouthfeel lead to overeating. (UPF富含卡路里,但通常缺乏营养,它会导致超重,部分原因是它美味的味道和柔软的口感会导致暴饮暴食)”可知,超加工食品的代价之一是营养不良和超重。故选C项。
11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“There is nothing wrong with the strange fast-food trip, but anyone who can afford to eat less UPF probably should. (这种奇怪的快餐之旅并没有什么错,但任何有能力少吃UPF的人可能都应该这样做)”可知,作者提到超加工食品虽然廉价且美味,但其添加剂对健康有害,且会导致超重等问题。此外,作者还指出超加工食品取代了更健康的选择,尤其是对贫困人群不利,呼吁大家尽量避免这类食品。因此,作者对超加工食品的态度是否定的。故选C项。
A 13. A 14. D 15. A
