Matthew has retired. He used to be working in a sawmill (锯木厂). Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused his fingers to be injured and bleed all year round. Outside his job, he enjoyed watching baseball games and he was glad that he had more time for it after he retired. In Matthew’s eyes, baseball was a game including details, mental sharpness, and great patience, and he thought instructing young men needed the same abilities.
There were boys on the high school baseball team playing in the neighborhood and Matthew was their regular visitor. Whether on summer evenings under the lights or in the mid-afternoon sun, he was always the one to appear on time. In the beginning, he simply sat and watched them. After a good play, Matthew would give them a praising sign, and a mistake would earn his smile, which meant, “You’ll get another chance!” He communicated with the boys in such a way.
Gradually, the boys got used to Matthew’s presence and became familiar with him. They were curious about his tough hands. He talked about his adventures of working in the forest. They were long and inspiring stories, all about friendship, helping each other, and remaining hopeful even though experiencing hardship, and also about how a boy grew into a man.
Matthew would take time to show them some basic skills to some slow learners and took the trouble to repeat each detail until the players were skillful. What Matthew taught was deeply rooted in the boys’hearts and they could play wonderfully in the races.
Time flew. Matthew thought he was too old to teach them anything. It was time for him to leave. However, the boys told Matthew that his fighting spirit had long been part of their team. Nearly everyone on the team learned to expect a little more from themselves as long as Matthew was there.
24.What did Matthew think of the baseball game?
A.It took plenty of patience. B.It needed a lot of strength.
C.It must be based on interest. D.It called for sharp movements.
25.How did Matthew exchange with the boys at first?
A.By joining them in playing baseball.
B.By teaching them some special skills.
C.By sharing his past about playing baseball.
D.By encouraging them with body language.
26.What influence did Matthew have on the boys?
A.He developed the children’s love for the forests.
B.He taught them the skills of making good friends.
C.He helped them keep positive during their growth.
D.He made them learn to search for new adventures.
27.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.Matthew’s skills weren’t recognized by the boys.
B.Matthew’s quality would always inspire the boys.
C.The boys thought Matthew became less patient later.
D.The boys learned more baseball skills from Matthew.

There are times in life when we don’t have the energy to get through our problems or the strength to push ahead. That’s when our friends carry us. They remind us that we are not alone — they stand with and comfort us. Even when some friends don’t always know how best to help, they want to be there for us.
Author Parker J. Palmer in his book, Let Your Life Speak, shares about the time he was battling depression (抑郁). He recalls that some people who visited him tried to cheer him up. “It’s a beautiful day. Why don’t you go out and soak up some sunshine and look at the flowers?” Although he understood their purpose, it made him more depressed. Others reminded him that he was a teacher and writer who had helped so many people. “Try to remember all the good you’ve done and surely you’ll feel better.” That advice, too, left him depressed.
Then there were those who had the courage to stand with him in simple and healing ways. One was a guy named Bill who asked Parker’s permission to visit him in the afternoons. Bill would sit Parker in the chair, kneel in front of him, remove his shoes and socks and for half an hour, massage (按摩) his feet. Bill had found the only place in Parker’s body where he could still experience feelings and reconnect with the human race. Bill would simply do this and say very little. When he talked, he would not give advice but mirror Parker’s feelings. This simple act of care was what carried Parker through his dark time.
We are thankful for the friends who sit with us in easy and healing ways. And we are thankful for the opportunity to be that friend, to offer our presence to those who are hurting, sick, battling depression, suffering great pain and more. May the pathways of love, patience and kindness lead us to friends who are suffering. And once there, even if we are unsure of what to do, we can simply be present.
28.According to paragraph 2, how did Parker find his friends’ ways to cheer him up?
A.Nice but unhelpful. B.Warm but old-fashioned.
C.Simple but creative. D.Kind but unimaginative.
29.What effect did Bill’s massage have on Parker?
A.It reduced his physical pain. B.It encouraged him to take advice.
C.It helped him reconnect with the world. D.It gave him professional medical care.
30.What does the author suggest we do to help our friends?
A.Be thankful to them. B.Keep them company.
C.Be quick to respond. D.Offer practical advice.
31.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A.How to Win over People and Make Friends
B.The Benefit of Friendships in Battling Depression
C.The Great Power of Simply Being Present for a Friend
D.Why Friends can Carry You Through Your Darkest Times

Years ago, many Mexican gray wolves lived in the United States. In the 1800s, cattle farmers were worried that these wolves would hunt and eat their farm animals. During the 1800s and 1900s, farmers killed many of these wolves to try to protect their animals. These wolves almost went extinct.
In 1976, the U. S. government passed the Endangered Species Act. These wolves were finally protected! And with help, the species continues to survive today.
The White Mountain Apache Tribe (部落)has played an important role in keeping this species alive. They live on a large area of land in Arizona called the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. This area is also a wolf habitat.
Krista Beazley is a wolf biologist on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. She tracks the movements of Mexican gray wolves that live on the land. Scientists have put special radio collars on wolves. These collars send out beeping signals (蜂鸣信号)to a special hand-held antenna (手持天线). Biologists like Beazley use these antennas to track the wolves. She also follows their footprints and droppings. Wolf droppings tell biologists what the wolf ate, where it spends much of its time, and if it is sick. Beazley makes sure the wolves are alive and healthy.
The number of Mexican gray wolves living on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation is growing. Despite this remarkable progress, the species is still endangered. The White Mountain Apache Tribe continues to try to protect these wolves.
The White Mountain Apache Tribe also works to protect many other rare plant and animal species. For example, they saved the Apache trout from extinction by closing certain areas to fishing and by building trout habitats. They also protect habitats for animals like the Mexican spotted owl. The White Mountain Apache Tribe has a close connect ion with all of nature. Tribe members believe humans must honor the animals and nature around them.
32.Why did Mexican gray wolves almost die out during the 1800s and 1900s?
A.They were eaten by farm animals. B.They were killed by cattle farmers.
C.Government passed laws to hunt them. D.They hardly survived in the extreme climates.
33.What was the result of the Endangered Species Act being passed?
A.The Mexican gray wolf was protected.
B.The Mexican gray wolf disappeared completely.
C.The White Mountain Apache Tribe settled in Arizona.
D.The Fort Apache Indian Reservation became a wolf habitat.
34.What may best describe Krista Beazley?
A.Kind and courageous. B.Careful and confident.
C.Hardworking and caring. D.Responsible and humorous.
35.What do we know about the White Mountain Apache Tribe?
A.They care about animals and nature around them.
B.They work hard to build habitats for all animals.
C.Their unique task is to protect Mexican gray wolves.
D.They try to keep Mexican gray wolves from increasing.

A report by the World Health Organization concludes a majority of teenagers worldwide aren’t physically active enough. Many children don’t participate in any extracurricular (课外的)activities. 36 In fact, participating in high-quality PE classes provides numerous benefits for students. Now let’s take a look at some of them.
37
A PE class is the ideal setting for developing healthy habits and acquiring an understanding of one’s own body. Daily physical education encourages children to be physically active and develop abilities and skills which are beneficial for them both physically and emotionally throughout their lives.
Helping reduce stress and anxiety.
38 When kids are allowed to be active and move their bodies at school, it becomes a natural body and mind energizer that makes the rest of the day far more enjoyable. Physical activity can help to improve mood and emotional stability, and prevent anxiety disorders as well.
Boosting academic learning.
Numerous studies have shown that there is a strong link between physical activity and academic achievement. PE can improve concentration, attention, and memory, as well as reduce stress and fatigue(疲劳). It can also help to improve mood and energy levels in kids. 39
Strengthening relationships with others.
In PE lessons, students are frequently asked to work together to complete certain tasks. This allows them to strengthen relationships with their classmates. 40 PE can also teach students how to better manage conflict and help develop communication skills. These factors contribute to the development of strong, healthy relationships with others.
A.Encouraging physical activity for life.
B.Developing a strong sense of teamwork.
C.In some cases, these relationships can last a lifetime.
D.All of these factors can lead to improved grades and test scores.
E.PE can be the perfect means for students to take the pressure off.
F.Students can also learn how to handle winning and losing gracefully.
G.What would happen if teenagers were no longer given access to quality PE?

Most of you have probably felt this before — you wait a long time for something, but when it gets close, you’re afraid of what’s coming. That’s exactly how I felt before my first day of senior high school. I worked hard to pass the tests and had an interview with the headmaster to get into this famous school. When it was finally time to start, I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so nervous about how I would look in front of everyone.
It was Monday morning. I was too excited to sleep the night before, so I arrived at school half an hour early. I walked nervously through the hallway. After about 15 minutes, the hallway was packed with students. The teachers seemed too busy to notice me. I knew which room I needed to go to and had already checked that it was open, but I was hesitant (犹豫不决的) to go in and stood alone. The students moved around me as if I wasn’t there, and I felt disappointed and lonely.
Suddenly, a well-dressed boy got close to me. He introduced himself as Thompson and asked if I was lost and if he could help me with anything. I realized how kind he was, and he was exactly who I had wished for a minute before, but I was too nervous to be friendly. Instead of accepting his help and making friends with him, I told him to mind his own business and that I was old enough to find my class without anyone’s help.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

W: I don’t know. I prefer to have something salty, or even bitter, such as soda water. I’m not a big fan of chocolate, or cakes.
M: That’s a pity. I have a big bar of chocolate in my bag, and I was thinking of sharing it with you.
W: Oh, OK. I can take some. I haven’t eaten anything the whole day. I feel tired and sleepy …What chocolate is it?

M: Hello, everyone. My name is Sam Thomas. I’m from WSp, short for Worldwide Students, project. It is a service organization which was setup to improve international understanding. Now we’ve got volunteers from 30 different countries working around the world. If you’re interested in joining us, I’d like to tell you about some of the projects. There are3kinds of projects to choose from: short-term projects, lasting 2or 3weeks, medium-term projects lasting between1and 6 months and long-term projects, which can be up to a year. The first project I’d like to tell about is in Japan. It’s a village improvement project. You’d be working with local people. So, you need knowledge of Japanese for that. It is for 3weeks. The next one is a children’s holiday center in Poland. The work includes painting rooms, gardening and things like that. It’s a medium-term one lasting 6 weeks. The final project is for the medical students here. There is a placement in a center for disabled children in India. You’d be providing medical care there. You’ll work 6 months there. So you can get plenty of experience and do something for the disabled children.

Today I am honored to give a speech titled Changes Begin With You. As we all know, many animals are in danger because of human activities, such as environmental pollution, illegal hunting and habitat destruction.
As teenagers, we should take actions right now. We can make people around us aware of the importance of environmental protection. In addition, when the buying stops, the killings can stop, too. We need to persuade our parents not to buy any animals products, such as fur and ivory products.
Changes begin with you! Only when we live in harmony with animals can we have a bright future.
Thank you for listening.

67. Luckily, the boy smiled at me and went away without getting angry. I felt a wave of shame wash over me. I realized my response had been uncalled for, especially from someone who was trying to help. As I stood there, I wished I could take my words back. The bell rang, signaling the start of the first period, and I reluctantly walked into my classroom, still feeling embarrassed about my earlier reaction.
Unexpectedly, Thompson walked into the same classroom. My heart sank, and I hoped he wouldn’t recognize me as the rude boy from the hallway. But to my surprise, he walked over and sat down next to me, flashing a friendly smile. I took a deep breath and decided to change my approach. “Hey, I’m sorry about earlier. I was really nervous,” I said, trying to sound sincere. “No worries! It’s a big day for all of us. I was nervous too,” he replied. As the class progressed, I felt the weight of my earlier anxiety lift. Thompson ended up being a great friend, and that first day, which had started so painfully, turned into a memorable experience filled with laughter and new beginnings.
