B
A group of strangers turned up at the gym in the early morning of the last Sunday of April. A few athletes were already stretching (拉伸) their arms, but most of us could barely focus. As I was burning off last night’s wrong decision — a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym’s 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. I always wanted to train for a marathon, so I considered this as my warm-up. Besides, I needed to stop being lazy and this was my chance to make a change.
It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions (限制) wouldn’t be easy. I started to wake up earlier every day to fit in my exercise sessions. Each morning, it became a struggle to get out of bed and head to the gym. The first few days were tough, as my body ached and I felt exhausted. But the most unbearable thing was that I often found myself craving things I couldn’t have, and it was really challenging to resist the temptation of those delicious but unhealthy food. However, I still stuck it out.
Overcoming weaknesses with willpower was my goal for the next part of the journey. But the difficult part about making a challenge is realizing that “wanting” and “doing” are two very different things. Just like a career, you have to physically work for it rather than just wait for it to happen. But that’s hard. Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. However, finally I overcame that negative thought and kept working out.
At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them. I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter as I researched which foods were better for my body, and learned how to make healthier meals. I felt a sense of achievement too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn’t. I felt my waist got smaller and my arms got stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.
4. What was the author’s wrong decision?
A. Going to the gym early. B. Training for a marathon.
C. Stopping being lazy for a change. D. Eating a lot the previous night.
5. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Some of the author’s bad habits.
B. The difficulty of the author’s keeping on with the workout plan.
C. The importance of sticking to the workout plan.
D. Some ways of the author’s killing his spare time.
6. What does the underlined word “sabotage” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. stop B. hear C. improve D. recognize
7. What did the author learn from the workout challenge?
A. Eating healthy food is more important than exercising.
B. It’s more important to see what he likes than just feel it.
C. Overcoming a challenge could bring good feelings to him.
D. There was no need to feel guilty about things he disliked to do.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C
根据第一段中“As I was burning off last night’s wrong decision — a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym’s 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. (当我正在为昨晚的错误决定——一顿大餐——而精疲力竭时,我看到了一张关于健身房21天锻炼挑战的海报,我立即报名参加了)”可知,昨晚作者做了一个错误的决定:吃了一顿大餐,因此作者的错误决定是前一天晚上吃得很多。故选D项。
【5题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions (限制) wouldn’t be easy. (在纸上承诺很容易,但三周的推荐锻炼计划和饮食限制并不容易)”可知,将承诺写在纸上是很容易的,但是坚持三个星期的锻炼和饮食限制并不容易,因此该段的主要内容是作者坚持锻炼计划的困难。故选B项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them. I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter as I researched which foods were better for my body, and learned how to make healthier meals. I felt a sense of accomplishment , too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn’t. I felt my waist got smaller and my arms got stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.
C
As we know, search and rescue teams often play an important role in rescue work. Usually, the teams are accompanied by man’s best friend. A dog’s greater sense of smell can be important to finding survivors buried under fallen buildings. But now a new animal is being trained to assist search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits, and it’s the rat (老鼠).
These rescue rats are being trained by Dr. Donna Kean, a researcher from Glasgow, Scotland who has been working with rats for years. Kean explained why she and her colleagues at the nonprofit APOPO train rats instead of dogs. “The rats have a comparable sense of smell, and they’re just as trainable as dogs,” she said. “Their size is useful because they will be able to move through different environments that dogs just wouldn’t be able to.”
At the moment, the rats are wearing backpacks that contain microphones, video equipment and location trackers, and then scientists are sending these rats into mock debris Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get to victims buried in the ruins. “We have not been in a real situation yet; we have got a mock debris site. When we track the backpack, we will be able to hear from where the rat is inside the debris,” Kean said. “We may speak to victims through the rat.”
Researchers train them on a basic series of behaviour. Training starts off in a really basic environment: a small and empty room. Then they gradually increase the difficulty in order to make it like real life. They can start adding in debris and making the training area look more like a real ruined building site.
The training just started and researchers still have to run more training outside the research environment. They are working with a search and rescue group called GEA, who are based in Turkey, a country with frequent earthquakes and hoping that by next year they’ll be able to take the rats to Turkey for field experiments.
8. What advantage do rats have over dogs in the rescue work?
A. They are easier to train. B. They are more suitable with a smaller size.
C. They have a better sense of smell. D. They adapt to new environments more quickly.
9. What usage is expected of the backpacks?
A. To guide rats to find survivors. B. To protect rats from being injured.
C. To help rescuers communicate with victims. D. To provide some food for trapped people.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The process of training the rats.
B. The difficulty of conducting experiments.
C. The rats’ behaviour in real collapsed sites.
D. The importance of the research environment.
11. What do scientists plan to do next?
A. Train rats for rescue work in more countries.
B. Develop the technology to assist GEA.
C. Conduct further study on disaster warning.
D. Send rats to Turkey for tests in real situations.
B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第二段中“ “The rats have a comparable sense of smell, and they’ re just as trainable as dogs,” she said. “Their size is useful because they will be able to move through different environments that dogs just wouldn’t be able to.”(“老鼠有类似的嗅觉,而且它们和狗一样容易训练,”她说。“它们的体型很有用,因为它们能够在狗无法做到的不同环境中移动。”)”可知,在救援工作中,老鼠相比狗的优势是它们体型较小,更适合较小尺寸的环境。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中““We have not been in a real situation yet; we have got a mock debris site. When we track the backpack, we will be able to hear from where the rat is inside the debris,” Kean said. “We may speak to victims through the rat.”(“我们还没有处于真实的情境中;我们设有一个模拟的废墟现场。当我们追踪背包时,我们将能够听到老鼠在废墟中的位置,”基恩说。“我们可以通过老鼠与受害者交谈。”)”可知,背包的预期用途是帮助救援人员与受害者进行沟通。故选C。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Researchers train them on a basic series of behaviour. Training starts off in a really basic environment: a small and empty room. Then they gradually increase the difficulty in order to make it like real life. They can start adding in debris and making the training area look more like a real ruined building site.(研究人员对他们进行一系列基本行为的训练。培训从一个非常基本的环境开始:一个小而空的房间。然后他们逐渐增加难度,以使其像现实生活一样。他们可以开始添加碎片,使训练区域看起来更像一个真正的废墟建筑工地)”可知,第四段主要介绍了训练老鼠的过程。故选A。
根据最后一段中“They are working with a search and rescue group called GEA, who are based in Turkey, a country with frequent earthquakes and hoping that by next year they’ll be able to take the rats to Turkey for field experiments.(他们正在与一个名为GEA的搜救组织合作,该组织的总部位于地震频发的土耳其,希望明年他们能够将老鼠带到土耳其进行现场实验)”可推知,科学家下一步计划将老鼠送到土耳其进行真实情况测试。故选D。
D
If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something that does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. For example, a hobby that you haven’t done for a few years, like playing the piano. The next time you pick it up, maybe you’ve forgotten altogether! In order to prevent this, people take regular exercise to keep their skills sharp.
Well, what about the brain? As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline (衰退). In some cases, this can lead to certain mental conditions such as dementia (痴呆). However, all is not lost because these days it’s relatively easy to train your brain. Smartphones and apps have put programmes that can test, keep and even improve our memories and a number of other mental abilities. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains sharp, right?
Well, no, actually. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people think it is beneficial to play some online games that are designed to improve brain health, the evidence of the benefits is “weak to non-existent”. Playing a “brain game” may lead to improvements in game performance, but this has yet to show a convincing result in people’s daily cognitive abilities.
Don’t lose heart, though. There are other ways to develop the brain. It recommends trying new activities that challenge the way you think and are socially engaging, while leading to a healthy lifestyle. Among their suggestions are practising tai chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There’s more good news too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK, has said that brain decline is not unavoidable. As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something new. Maybe it’s time to try that hobby you’ve always wanted to do.
12. Why is playing the piano mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic of brain decline.
B. To illustrate the meaning of an old saying.
C. To explain how to keep physically healthy.
D. To show the importance of regular exercise.
13. What can we infer about the effectiveness of playing online brain games from paragraph 3?
A. Strong and continuous benefits have been proved.
B. The evidence of the benefits is weak to non-existent.
C. The benefits are not obvious in terms of daily cognitive abilities.
D. Both game performance and cognitive functions are greatly improved.
14. According to James Goodwin, which of the following does NOT help prevent brain decline?
A. Playing a familiar game that does not demand much thought.
B. Learning a new musical instrument that requires concentration.
C Participating in a photography course that challenges one’s creative skills.
D. Taking part in a new cooking class that teaches techniques unknown before.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Brain decline is natural and unavoidable as people age.
B. Online brain games can improve people’s cognitive abilities.
C. Engaging in new and challenging activities can benefit brain health.
D. Regular exercise and healthy lifestyle are key to keeping the brain healthy.
B 13. C 14. A 15. C
根据第一段“If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something that does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. For example, a hobby that you haven’t done for a few years, like playing the piano. The next time you pick it up, maybe you’ve forgotten altogether!(如果你不使用它,你就会失去它。至少,老话是这么说的。它指的是不经常使用的东西很快就会陷入衰退状态。例如,你有几年没有从事的爱好,比如弹钢琴。下次你拿起它的时候,也许你已经完全忘记了!)”可知,提到弹钢琴的目的是为了阐释这句老话的含义。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“ Playing a “brain game” may lead to improvements in game performance, but this has yet to show a convincing result in people’s daily cognitive abilities.(玩“脑力游戏”可能会提高游戏表现,但这在人们的日常认知能力方面尚未显示出令人信服的结果)”可知,玩在线脑力游戏在日常认知能力方面的效果并不明显。
根据最后一段“As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health.(只要这些活动“对你来说是新鲜的,需要你集中注意力”,它们就能对大脑健康有益。)” 故选A项。
通读全文,并结合第一段“If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something that does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. For example, a hobby that you haven’t done for a few years, like playing the piano. At thirteen years old, I wanted very much to have a mountain bike of my own. But Mom said that I had to earn the money myself to buy one. So I needed a job.
“Mom, what can kids do for a job around here?” I asked, leaning against the kitchen counter while Mom was cooking dinner.
“You really want a job?” Mom asked with a smile.
“I need more money for my bike.” I said seriously.
“Okay, let me ask around.” Mom finally agreed.
The next day, she had an answer. She told me my grandmother would pay me if I helped her deliver meals each day to the elderly. I couldn’t wait to start my job on Monday after school.
When grandmother picked me up, I asked what I should do.
“It’s simple. We pick up a large container full of hot meals in a nearby town and then we goon our delivery route.”
“That’s easy.” I responded cheerfully.
After our load was arranged in the backseat, my grandmother drove us to our first stop: a small house. I nearly jumped when I glanced over to see a tiny old woman in the corner looking at me. When I handed the meal to her, she smiled at me. The house smelled terrible and looked old and shabby. I held my breath until we went back out onto the porch. The next stop was much the same and the next. The same wrinkly people eagerly waited for their meals. Each person smiled at me and thanked again and again as I hurried to get out of there. I was sweaty and tired.

A. stop B. hear C. improve D. recognize
7. What did the author learn from the workout challenge?
A. Eating healthy food is more important than exercising.
B. It’s more important to see what he likes than just feel it.
C. Overcoming a challenge could bring good feelings to him.
D. There was no need to feel guilty about things he disliked to do.

There’s more good news, too.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为80左右;
On our way back home, I sat at the backseat silently with the idea of giving up.
