A Change of Heart
It was one of those days, an ordinary October day. I woke up feeling tired of all of the housework. I wasn’t feeling any sense of thankfulness for my comfortable home or lovely family, I dropped my two older children at school with a sense of relief and unwillingly headed to the supermarket to buy groceries with my youngest.
I was feeling bad at having to go in the first place (why do they have to eat? ) and my son, just four years old at the time, responding to my feelings, was being difficult. I raced around with the trolley (手推车) , thoughtlessly throwing items in with no regard to cost, while trying to control my naughty (调皮的) boy whose behavior now was completely out of control. Yes, I was that mother, shouting, threatening, at a small child, the kind of behavior you see in others before you have children and think, I will never be one of those people.

续写原文
We eventually made it to the checkout, and stood in the queue waiting our turn. After a short time, I noticed that someone had joined the line behind us. I turned around and saw an old man. He was bent over and wore a dirty overcoat, tied around the middle with rope. His shoes were worn out and his trousers hung around sockless ankles on this cold, wet day. In his hands he carried a small bottle of long-life milk.

续写原文
As I had a trolley full of groceries, I asked him if he’d like to go ahead of me. It wasn’t an act of kindness on my part, but rather an automatic (无意识的) reaction, rooted in me since childhood from the time I went shopping with my mother. Perhaps I just did it out of a sense of responsibility or guilt. Perhaps I just wanted him gone. After all, his presence made me uncomfortable, in the same way I feel uncomfortable and look away when passing a homeless person. He looked shocked and uncertain. “No, I couldn’t possibly. Are you sure?” “How kind of you!” he said. Hesitantly, he went ahead, paid for his milk, and took his change.

Para 1: Then, to my amazement, he turned to my little boy and gently pressed the change into his hand.

Para 2: Waving back to him, with my young son by my side, I felt a change of heart.

Then, to my amazement, he turned to my little boy and gently pressed the change into his hand. With a kind smile on his face and affection in his eyes, he said softly, "Here, little fellow. Buy yourself a treat." My son was startled at first, and then his eyes sparkled with surprise. He exclaimed happily, "Thank you, sir!" At that moment, I was completely stunned. I had thought the old man would just leave after paying for his milk. However, he showed such generosity to my son. Looking at my son's innocent smile and the old man's shabby appearance, a strong sense of guilt welled up in me. I began to reflect on my previous dislike and prejudice towards the old man. It was really wrong of me to judge him just by his appearance.

Waving back to him, with my young son by my side, I felt a change of heart. As I watched the old man walking away, his hunched back gradually disappearing from my sight, I was filled with shame. I was ashamed of my previous shallow judgment. Meanwhile, I was deeply grateful to the old man. It was he who taught me a lesson with his silent act. I realized that we shouldn't judge people by their appearance. Everyone has their own dignity and kindness. From then on, I decided to change myself. I would cherish every bit in life and treat everyone around me with more kindness and tolerance, no longer letting prejudice blind my eyes.

hen, to my amazement, he turned to my little boy and gently pressed the change into his hand. His face adorned with a kind smile and eyes brimming with affection, he murmured softly, "Here, little chap. Go get yourself a sweet." My son, initially taken aback, had his eyes instantly light up. "Thank you, sir!" he cried out merrily. At that instant, I was rendered speechless, rooted to the spot. Having assumed the old man would depart after purchasing his milk, I was completely caught off - guard by his generosity towards my son. Gazing at my son's innocent smile and the old man's tattered appearance, a wave of guilt washed over me. How wrong I had been to judge him merely by his exterior!

Waving back to him, with my young son by my side, I felt a change of heart. As the old man's hunched figure faded into the distance, I was consumed by shame. Ashamed of my previous shallow judgment, I also felt a deep sense of gratitude towards him. It was he who, with his wordless act, imparted a valuable lesson to me. I came to realize that one should never judge a book by its cover; everyone harbors their own dignity and kindness. From that moment on, I resolved to transform myself, cherishing every aspect of life and treating others with greater kindness and tolerance, determined never again to let prejudice cloud my vision.
