Ten days after Taliah Braun was born, her parents were told that she had a special eye problem, which caused her left eye not to develop fully. It means that she’s completely blind in that eye. Since then, she has had to wear a prosthetic eye (义眼). The eye doesn’t help her see, but helps to balance her face.
Growing up, Taliah remembers she was a very confident kid, although she was blind in one eye. When she met new friends at the park near her house, she wasn’t shy about showing her prosthetic eye. She said “Look, I can pull out my eye!” A lot of people would be frightened and say “That’s so scary.” But she didn’t really let that influence her.
Despite her great confidence, Taliah felt lonely. She began looking for online spaces where she could connect with other kids with vision problems, but couldn’t find any. So Taliah decided to create a space for kids like her.
In January 2020, when she was 13, Taliah and her dad started thinking about Vision Village: an online space where kids could sign up and get connected with a pen friend who also shared a visual (视觉的) difference. “I wanted kids across the world to stop feeling as lonely as I did,” Taliah said.
In June 2021, Taliah finally set up a website called Vision Village, which connects kids aged 6 to 16 with vision problems with one another. Since then, the site has grown to 30 members who have been paired with one another. She has helped dozens of people from around the world feel less lonely because of their visual differences.
Taliah said the next step is to create a Vision Village app, which allows members to connect more easily.
4. What happened to Taliah?
A. She was born deaf.
B. She hurt her eyes while playing.
C. She had an underdeveloped eye.
D. She had an accident when she was young.
5. Why did Taliah set up the website “Vision Village”?
A. To turn to others for help.
B. To chat with her classmates.

C. Confident and positive. D. Stressed and annoyed.
7. What can be inferred from the text?

A program of Abu Dhabi’s environment agency is rescuing sea turtles and returning them to the Persian Gulf (波斯湾).
Members of the program have released (释放) a total of about 500 sea turtles that were rescued. The environment agency launched the program three years ago to help turtles struggling to survive. The latest release took place in early June. Members of the agency’s Wildlife Rescue Program brought about 80 turtles to the water and released them. Scientists placed satellite equipment (卫星设备) on the turtles to better understand where they go. The information will inform scientists about the success of rehabilitation (恢复)methods.
Turtles have historically been hunted for their meat and eggs. Their shells have been used in jewelry. But other causes have decreased the numbers of all seven species of sea turtles. Hind Al-Ameri is a scientist at the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi. She said that problems like plastic pollution, ship strikes, and fishing equipment are harming sea turtles. She added that coastal development reduces the amount of space the turtles have to lay eggs and warming oceans can harm coral reefs, which turtles need to survive. Besides, changing ocean currents(洋流) can bring turtles closer to animals that hunt them and rising sea levels might harm coastal areas where the turtles lay their eggs.
The sex of baby turtles is influenced by the temperature at which the eggs develop. Warmer temperatures produce higher numbers of female turtles. Al-Ameri said conditions in the United Arab Emirates have become so warm that male population numbers should be greatly reduced.
However, she said the turtle groups are healthy and reproducing. “It’s driving us to understand why our species are adapting to the changes” she said.
8 How did scientists track the turtles?
A. By locating them with special tools. B. By swimming after them in person.
C. By studying data collected before. D. By doing various experiments in labs.
9. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Ways to hunt sea turtles. B. Experiments led by a scientist.
C. Places where sea turtles lay eggs. D. Reasons for the decrease of sea turtles.
10. What determines the populations of male turtles?
A. The rising sea level. B. The number of female turtles.
C. The warmer temperatures. D. The changing ocean currents.
11. What’s Al-Ameri’s attitude towards the program of Abu Dhabi?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Uninterested D. Doubtful.

The Great Wall of China is the longest wall in the world. The total length of all the sections added together is more than 21,000 kilometers. Researchers have recently found that parts of the wall have been preserved over time by something called a biocrust (生物土壤结皮). This is a thin Layer of plant life.
The Great Wall of China was built in sections over a period of more than 2,000 years. The first parts were started around 220 BC. Its purpose was to prevent invaders (侵略者) from coming into China from the north. The most famous parts of the wall were built from stone, but in some areas, it was built using “rammed earth (夯土)”. Over time, wind and rain can easily wear down rammed earth. So, scientists have often questioned how these old sections of the Great Wall have managed to survive for such a long time.
A group of researchers from China Agricultural University in Beijing examined a 592-kilometer-long section of the wall and found that more than two thirds of it was covered in biocrust. The scientists took some samples of the biocrust back to their lab for testing and found that the natal material was actually stronger than the rammed earth. Some pieces of the plant-based layer were up to three times stronger. This means that the biocrust has actually strengthened the wall and protected it from being worn down by weather over the years.
These findings could be important for people who manage ancient structures all over the world. Although biocrust may not look attractive, its natural ability to preserve things makes it a very useful tool for experts looking for ways to protect valuable ancient buildings.
12. What’s the purpose of the Great Wall when it was built?
A. To show ancient people’s wisdom. B. To protect China from being attacked.
C. To promote the cultural communication. D. To attract more tourists at home and abroad.
13. Why have the old sections of the Great Wall survived for so long?
A. The weather has been especially good.
B. The officials have been preserving them.
C. They were built with stones and rammed earth.
D. They have been covered by a thin layer of plant life.
14. What does the underlined phrase “worn down” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Left alone. B. Cut out. C. Swept away. D. Thrown away.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. An Amazing Material: Stone B. Small Plant, Big Contributor
C. A Lucky Survivor: the Great Wall D. Effective Measures, Firm Walls

Recently, I volunteered with Interact, my school’s service group at Read 2 Me, an activity that focuses on giving an opportunity to volunteers to read to kids and interact with them.
I walked with other volunteers into a large room where there was a large variety of books. Some were picture books, such as Clifford or The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Others were chapter books with pictures in them, such as the Berenstain Bears and The Wimpy Kid series. For the extremely talented kids who like to be challenged, we provided chapter books that required imagination to understand. Just after I’d gathered some books together, someone announced that it was almost time for the activity to start.
Suddenly, a burst of voices was heard. The doors opened, and the children rushed in, beginning to look for a reading partner. There was a variety of children rushing all at once. Some had glasses while others had T-shirts of their favorite cartoons. They all looked so eager to read, just like mice eager to taste a piece of cheese. It was really nice to see children with this much energy to read books. I looked around and all the volunteers were reading books to children of all ages. People of different ages taking time from their own life to read to others. Almost every child looked happy because of getting the chance of being read to by others. I was sitting there waiting and glancing at the books that I had picked out for the lucky kid I would read them to.
Just then, a boy about six years old began to come my way, and I knew that I had found my reading partner. “Hi, I’m Max. Would you like to be my reading partner?” “Sure,” I responded.

【47题答案】
【答案】Later, I picked one book and read it to him. His eyes were fixed on the pages, wide with curiosity and wonder. Every now and then, he’d ask me questions, and I’d patiently explain. When I finished one story, he’d excitedly ask for another, his voice filled with anticipation. His enthusiasm made the reading session so enjoyable that time seemed to fly. It felt like we were in a world of our own, away from all the distractions and chaos.
As I waved goodbye to Max, he said I changed him a lot. I was surprised and deeply touched. I told him it was he who made my day special. Reading to him wasn’t just a volunteer task; it was a heartwarming interaction that filled my heart with joy and a sense of purpose. I realized that a simple act of sharing stories could have such a profound impact on a child’s mind and heart. I promised to come back and read to him again, hoping to inspire his love for reading even more.
