Every year, Macy’s (梅西百货) holds its big Thanksgiving Day Parade (感恩节游行) in New York City. It is a popular event for Americans.
The first Macy’s parade took place in 1924. It wasn’t big, but a lot of people attended it. Around 10,000 people there cheered. After that, Macy’s window shows began. People ran to see the dancing puppets (木偶) behind the glass.
Since then, it has become an important part of the Thanksgiving celebration. The event was not America’s first Thanksgiving parade, but it set an example for other parades. And the parade itself has always been well loved.
Two things have helped keep the parade popular. The first is television. Since the 1940s people across America have been able to watch the parade at home. The second is the parade’s big balloons. They are often in the shapes of cartoon characters. In the early years, Macy’s let the balloons go up into the air after the parade. People could send them back for a big reward (奖励) if they found one. But the company stopped doing it in 1932 because of an accident.
Over time, the Macy’s parade has grown bigger. It now has many balloons, bands and great stars. Over 28 million people watched last year’s event at home. That was more than any year before. For many Americans, the parade is not just fun. It also makes them feel proud of their country. Are you interested in this event? Come and have a look!
26. When did the first Macy’s parade take place?
A. In 1924. B. In 1932. C. In 1940.
27. How was the Macy’s parade in America?
A. Popular. B. Private. C. Valuable.
28. What shape are the balloons in Macy’s parade?
A. Great stars. B. Cartoon characters. C. Special plants.
29. Why do Americans hold the parade?
A. Because they only want to have fun.
B. Because this makes them feel proud of their country.
C. Because more and more people will buy products in Macy’s.
30. Where can you probably read this passage?
A. In a clothes store. B. In a cooking book. C. In a guidebook.
C
Every country has its own table manners, which can reflect special cultures among countries. So what do people do when they eat in different countries? Let’s take a look!
In Japan, it is considered polite to say “Itadakimasu (那我开动了)” before starting to eat, which shows thanks for the food. They use chopsticks in a proper way. For example, it is impolite to stick chopsticks in a bowl of rice because it stands for a ritual (礼节) for the dead. But making some noise when having noodles is OK.
In China, the host usually shows hospitality by making delicious food and advising the guests to help themselves. Avoid using chopsticks to point at others directly because it is impolite. You’re not supposed to stick your chopsticks into the food, either. And it is polite to wait until the elders start eating before the younger ones. During a meal, the conversation is usually lively, but one should not talk with a full mouth.
Do you know any table manners in the US? In the US, people usually use forks, knives, and spoons. They cut their food with a knife in the right hand and a fork in the left, and they eat with their right hand. It is common to have a conversation during the meal, and table topics can be of all kinds. Saying “please” and “thank you” is also an important part of American table manners.
In Russia, the table is often filled with a lot of dishes. It is common to have a toast (祝酒) before starting to eat. People may hold their glasses with their right hand and touch the bottom (底部) of the glasses when toasting. When eating bread, it is proper to break it with your hands rather than cutting it with a knife.
Understanding these table manners in other countries can help us avoid misunderstandings and show respect (尊敬) when we are in different countries. It makes our cultural knowledge colorful. Knowing about these customs helps us get used to local life and have a good dining experience.
31. In which country, making noise when having noodles is OK?
A. In China. B. In Japan. C. In Russia.
32. The underlined word “hospitality” in Paragraph 3 means ________.
A. welcome and warmth B. confidence and happiness C. success and money
33. How does the writer develop his idea at the beginning of Paragraph 4?
A. By showing the numbers. B. By asking a question. C. By telling a story.
34. Which of the following is RIGHT according to the passage?
A. Sticking chopsticks in a bowl of rice is OK in Japan.
B. In the US, people always have meals with their left hand.
C. In Russia, people break the bread with their hands to eat.
35. What is the best title for the passage?

Lu Ban was born in a common family. His family had been practicing carpentry (木工手艺) for several years. When he was a child, Lu joined his family members in many building projects around the state and he was very quick in learning the family trade. He was crazy about inventing new tools so that people could finish their job quickly.
For example, carpenters (木工) at that time didn’t have saws (锯). So, they had to use axes (斧头) to cut the wood. Of course, that was difficult and the products often turned out to be terrible.
One day, Lu hurt his fingers on a special leaf in the mountain. He took a close look at the leaf, wondering how it could be so sharp and cut the skin easily. When he saw the leaf had a serrated edge (锯齿状边缘) , he thought that this kind of edge could make cutting easier and quicker. In the following days, Lu produced the first saw in history.
He also invented many other carpentry tools and weapons (武器). Around 450 BC, Lu moved to the State of Chu in today’s Yangtze River Delta area. To help the state fight against its enemies, he invented many useful weapons.
He also helped build many bridges and palaces around the state, as well as many famous ancient bridges in other parts of the country. Because of his wonderful skills and inventions, Lu was remembered as “the Father of Carpentry” in Chinese history.
Some of the master carpenter’s skills and projects are recorded in “The Treatise of Lu Ban”, a book of folk carpentry which is still read today. Besides, folk carpenters still celebrate Lu’s birthday on the 13th day of the sixth month of each lunar year.
