B Many kids who grow up in big cities have lots of opportunities to experience science hands-on. There are zoos, museums and school field trips. But those conditions are sometimes out of reach for lower-income children. And in some rural areas, those opportunities simply don’t exist at all. Dan Sudran has taken it upon himself to help close the gap. Growing up a good, studious kid in Kansas, he followed the rules and went to college, then law school. But he was confused. “I couldn’t really figure out what I was or what I was supposed to be,” Sudran says. Sudran finally had his answer in his late 30s. He started taking apart electronics and collecting materials from the beach. In school, science had held no interest for him at all. But out in the real world, it turned out to be the thing he’d been missing all along. “My life becomes better since I got into science,” Sudran says. And that inspired him. What if he could give children the same experience he’d waited 30 years to discover? So Sudran got a college to donate some space and equipment. Pretty soon, a small nonprofit project called the Community Science Workshop Network was born. Today there are six workshops, almost all in low-income neighborhoods around California. One of the workshops is filled with stuff: microscopes, power tools, even a turtle and a snake. There’s no curriculum, nothing to memorize but tools to play and experiment with. Eighth-grader Jose Vega is working hard at building a robot while Esteban Espinoza, 6, is getting tadpoles (蝌蚪) out of a tank to examine them under a microscope. One group of kids are spreading out on the floor, trying to figure out how to build a hot air balloon. Sudran’s dream, he says, is to take this model of quick hands-on science all over the world. Next up, Sudran hopes, will be the small Southern California desert town of Coachella. 24. What can we know about Dan Sudran from the first two paragraphs? A. He makes a clear plan for his life. B. He had vast experience in field trips. C. He has a strong sense of responsibility. D. He showed an interest in science at school. 25. What gave Sudran the idea for the Community Science Workshop Network? A. His pursuit of better life. B. His practice of science. C His dream in childhood. D. His devotion to education. 26. Why does the author list examples in paragraph 4? A. To show the function of the project. B. To reveal the history of the project. C. To stress the importance of science. D. To record the growth of the students. 27. What does Sudran decide to do next? A. Become a science teacher. B. Build more science workshops. C. Move to desert town of Coachella. D. Find new models of learning science. C Though brown pelicans (鹈鹕) have bounced back from the endangered species list, they have been suffering from the second life-threatening event in recent years. Large numbers of the species are showing up sick and injured along California’s coastline, and experts are racing to find out why. A volunteer feeds sick brown pelicans recovering at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center of Orange County. The center is currently caring for over 100 brown pelicans which have been discovered starving or being sick in recent weeks. During the starvation event in 2022, nearly 800 brown pelicans were admitted to wildlife nursing centers and received considerate care, with only 394 eventually returned to the wild, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The cause of the current crisis remains largely unknown, but some interesting guesses are flying about. At one point, the birds were checked for the flu that has newly infected so many animals this year. Luckily, none of the sick pelicans tested positive for it. “We don’t have any indication that it’s directly human-caused, either,” says Henkel, a senior environmental scientist. “It’s not a human action of any kind that we’re aware of.” One theory is that powerful winds may be to blame, as low visibility could be preventing the pelicans from diving well enough to catch their meals, and hungry birds often get trapped in fishing lines. The evidence pointing to starvation as the cause may also better explain why the pelicans come in with injuries. Those involved in brown pelican recovery efforts note that while you should keep your distance from them, humans can be of assistance by immediately reporting an animal sighting to a local rescue center and keeping an eye on it until help arrives. Such an urgent response can often mean the difference between life and death for a pelican that needs life-saving care. If you are an expert, proper treatment for the affected pelicans may involve offering them lots of nutrition and water, or caring for wounds and giving them relevant medication in the center. 28. What can we learn about brown pelicans? A. They are newly listed as endangered. B. Their population has recovered a little. C. They have been starved for many years. D. Their numbers decline sharply due to injury. 29. Why does the author list data in paragraph 2? A. To prove the pelicans face severe problems. B. To highlight the mindful care for the pelicans. C. To reveal the pelicans mainly die of hunger. D. To stress volunteers’ role in saving the pelicans. 30. What may contribute to the current crisis for brown pelicans? A. Fishing lines. B. The flu. C. Human action. D. The weather. 31 How should an ordinary person deal with a sick brown pelican? A. Feed food and water to it. B. Rush it to a rescue center. C. Seek timely professional help. D. Give it an immediate exam. D You are more likely to think of the information that is repeated to be true than the information you hear only once. You assume that if people are going to put in effort to repeat a statement, this reflects the truth of the statement. Simply repeating some pieces of information does not actually make it true, but this tendency — also called the illusory (错觉的) truth effect — is a prejudice that can lead you to draw the wrong conclusions. An important step in decreasing the negative influence of prejudices in thinking is to be aware of them. To what degree are people aware of the illusory truth effect? This question was addressed in the journal Cognition by Simone Mattavelli. In the critical study, participants did two sessions. In one session, they read about a study in which people were exposed to trivia (琐事) statements and then were asked whether both statements they had heard before as well as new statements were true. They were asked to predict the percentage of each statement that would be judged as true. At another session a few days later, participants actually performed this study, reading a set of 20 trivia statements and then judging the truth of 40 statements, half of which were the ones they saw earlier and the other half of which were new. This study replicated the illusory truth effect. People were more likely to judge statements they had seen before as true than statements that were new. Two interesting findings emerged from the predictions. First, participants tended to underestimate the size of the illusory truth effect for everyone. Second, participants were more wrong when predicting their own performance compared to predicting the performance of another person. This work is particularly important in light of the amount of misinformation presented in social media. Many people are influencing public opinions about political and economic matters. Social media websites with misinformation will lead people to believe this information is true just because it is stated. 32. What is Simone’s study mainly about concerning the illusory truth effect? A. People’s awareness of it. B. People’s reaction to it. C. Its causes. D. Its process. 33. How did the participants engage in the first session of the study? A. Reading, repeating and judging. B. Reading, assessing and forecasting. C. Recording, judging and predicting. D. Predicting, observing and reflecting. 34. What does the underlined word “replicate” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Correspond with. B. Be contrary to. C. Put forward. D. Account for. 35. What is the author’s attitude toward Simone’s study? A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Knowing another language opens doors for kids and adults alike. But most educators agree that childhood is the ideal time for language learning. If you want your children to be bilingual (双语的), here is where to start. You should be flexible and use the method working best for your family. Some families favor “one parent, one language”. Some take on the task of learning a second language alongside their children. ____36____ Depending on your home situation, this can require a lot of planning, effort and persistence (坚持) on your part. You’d better use all of the resources at hand. While having back-and-forth conversations with native speakers is the most effective, there are lots of other ways. ____37____ Watching a favorite show or reading an interesting book in the non-dominant (非主导的) language can make learning enjoyable. That pre-test day came soon. The gym teacher blew the whistle (哨子) and four students dived into the swimming pool, racing to the other side, Then the next four were up, but only three stood on the diving board. “Where is Ren?” the gym teacher asked in concern. Ren’s face turned red, and he was unsteady. He looked at the pool and stepped back. “You cannot make me do this!” he said. Sadie, his teammate, patted him on the back gently. “You can do it! I will help you if you need it.” Ren stared into Sadie’s eyes and he calmed down. “You can do it. You need to pass this class.” The gym teacher said, Ren stepped on the diving board, putting his goggles (护目镜) over his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistle blew and Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran and pushed Ren into the water. Sadie glared at the boy, “Why would you do that?” A minute passed by and Ren still wasn’t coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him out of the water. She gave him CPR (心肺复苏), and it took a while until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water and sat up, feeling dizzy. Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank goodness! Why didn’t you use your arms or legs?” Ren stared away from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then looking up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes. “I can’t swim. My parents never taught me as a kid. We are afraid of water.” Sadie put her hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry, I will teach you how to swim. The water is my favorite place to be.” Ren thought for a while, and nodded gently. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: After gym class Sadie asked Ren gently why he was afraid of water. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The gym teacher blew the whistle and this time Ren dived bravely. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 长郡中学2025届高三期末适应性考试 英语 本试题卷共10页。 6. Today, I want to talk about self-management. It is not a buzzword but a lifestyle that many people strive for. In my perspective, self-management covers conscious control over our thoughts and behaviors, so as to make our days purposeful and fulfilling. Then how to manage ourselves properly? To begin with, make a to-do list and establish priorities. Only if we keep a sense of proportion can we be more efficient. Moreover, deadlines should be set to help us stay focused. Meanwhile, it’s recommended that we should set aside time for self-reflection to gain personal growth. It’s prime time to make self-management a new lifestyle, Together, let us embark on the journey of self-management and self-discipline! 第二节(满分25分) 【67题答案】 【答案】参考范文 After gym class Sadie asked Ren gently why he was afraid of water. Hesitating for a second, he shared an experience that he was once narrowly drowned in the river. “Let’s face and overcome it together.” Sadie said firmly. From then on, Sadie tried all means to help Ren. Gradually Ren overcame his fear and he swam freely in the pool. Sadie encouraged him to take part in the coming final examination. When that day came, Ren stepped on the diving board and he kept calm and attentive. The gym teacher blew the whistle and this time Ren dived bravely. He swam to the other side with incredible speed and technique. The gym teacher walked to the other side of the gym and knelt down “Incredible, Ren!”. The gym teacher helped him out of the water, shaking his hand excitedly and cheerfully. “Congratulations, you made it!” Ren hugged his teacher tightly and waved to Sadie gratefully with tears in eyes.
