It may just be Southern California’s longest drive-through line. But when drivers pull up to the front, there’s no window, fast food or even cashiers. Instead, each car is met with a group of volunteers, efficiently placing fresh produce and groceries in the trunk, free of charge.
This is the Seva Collective food pantry (食品储藏室) in Santa Ana, California, a food desert, which is an area where affordable healthy food is difficult to get, particularly for those who have no cars. This organization began as a disorganized operation — only a few volunteers to work together, food and toys purchased just by the organizers themselves, and a dream to help a community deal with food insecurity.
Thousands of meals later, the Seva Collective continued to grow, employing new volunteers and partnering with food banks, companies and farms. “We line cars up as early as three or four in the morning. And our goal is to provide fresh food for every family,” said Bandana Singh, co-founder of the Seva Collective.
“I rely upon the food pantry month after month in order to feed my family,” said resident Jody Watts. “It takes away a sense of anxiety about not having enough food to supply my family.”
4. Why do drivers pull up to the front?
A. To pick up goods. B. To get free food.
C. To exchange groceries. D. To wait for service.
5. What can we infer about the beginning of the Seva Collective food pantry?
A. It lacked security. B. It had a good beginning.
C. It met some challenges. D. It got much help from communities.
6. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The Seva Collective worked hard.
B. The Seva Collective had its own farms.
C. The Seva Collective employed skillful workers.
D. The Seva Collective offered food to every family.
7. What does Jody Watts think of the Seva Collective food pantry?
A. Anxious. B. Helpful. C. Formal. D. Ordinary.
B 5. C 6. A 7. B
根据第一段的句子“But when drivers pull up to the front, there’s no window, fast food or even cashiers. Instead, each car is met with a group of volunteers, efficiently placing fresh produce and groceries in the trunk, free of charge.(但是当司机把车停在前面时,没有窗口,没有快餐,甚至没有收银员。相反,每辆车都有一群志愿者,有效地将新鲜农产品和杂货免费放在后备箱里)”可知,司机把车停在前面是为了得到免费的事物。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的句子“This organization began as a disorganized operation — only a few volunteers to work together, food and toys purchased just by the organizers themselves, and a dream to help a community deal with food insecurity.(这个组织最初是一个没有组织的运作——只有几个志愿者一起工作,食物和玩具都是由组织者自己购买的,他们的梦想是帮助一个社区解决粮食不安全问题)”可知,这个组织在开始启动阶段的管理较无序,自愿参与工作的人少,组织者必须自己购买所需的食物玩具等物品,从而可以推断该项目初期阶段遇到了一些困难和挑战。
根据第三段的句子“Thousands of meals later, the Seva Collective continued to grow, employing new volunteers and partnering with food banks, companies and farms. “We line cars up as early as three or four in the morning. And our goal is to provide fresh food for every family,” said Bandana Singh, co-founder of the Seva Collective.(在数千顿饭之后,Seva Collective继续壮大,雇佣了新的志愿者,并与食品银行、公司和农场合作。“我们早在凌晨三四点就把车排好队。我们的目标是为每个家庭提供新鲜的食物,” Seva Collective的联合创始人班达纳·辛格说)”可知,这个机构的工作强度大,工作对象广,工作时间长,可推断出该机构工作很努力。故选A项。
根据最后一段““I rely upon the food pantry month after month in order to feed my family,” said resident Jody Watts. “It takes away a sense of anxiety about not having enough food to supply my family.”(居民Jody Watts说:“我每月都要依靠食品储藏室来养活家人。”“它消除了没有足够食物养活家人的焦虑感。”)”可知,the Seva Collective food pantry给Jody Watts提供了免费食物,让他养活家人,所以他认为 the Seva Collective food pantry对他帮助很大。故选B项。
C
A stretch of more than 70 kilometers of shoreline in Dubai could become the site of the world’s largest coastal regeneration (再生) project, if a project called Dubai Mangroves (红树林) were to go ahead.
Over 100 million mangroves - a group of trees that live mainly in coastal waters, where they are able to support entire ecosystems - will be planted as part of the project. That’s enough to take in over 1.2 million metric tons of CO2 per year, according to URB, a global leader in developing sustainable cities.
“Mangroves help protect against coastal erosion and rising sea levels, which are important issues for coastal cities like Dubai,” says Baharash Bagherian, an urban planner and founder of URB. “We’re currently researching,” he adds. “We’ve found six locations for pilot studies and are focusing on the designs for those locations. We plan to finish the project by 2040.”
Technology will play a role in both the development and the operations of Dubai Mangroves, with artificial intelligence (AI) constantly checking over the plants. “We plan to use advanced tools such as drone (无人驾驶飞机) reforestation to plant mangroves efficiently and remote sensing technology to monitor the health and growth of the mangrove forests,” says Bagherian.
Drones will place the mangrove seeds in locations where they have the best chance of survival satellite pictures will then be used to gain a roundup of the mangrove coverage, making it easier to discover areas that require increased attention.
Bagherian believes that the project will not only fight climate change and develop the local economy, but also improve the quality of life for locals.
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A To present a concept. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To prove a theory. D. To argue for an idea.
9. What can we learn from Bagherian’s words?
A. Dubai suffers from pollution.
B. URB has finished the designs for studies.
C. The Dubai Mangroves project will be finished very soon.
D. Mangroves contribute to fighting against rising sea levels.
10. What can technology help to do in Dubai Mangrove project?
A. Watch mangroves carefully. B. Plant mangroves remotely.
C. Monitor the rising sea levels. D. Protect mangroves.
11. What does the underlined word “roundup” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Good memory. B. Great benefit. C. Whole view. D. Serious situation.
B 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第一段“A stretch of more than 70 kilometers of shoreline in Dubai could become the site of the world’s largest coastal regeneration (再生) project, if a project called Dubai Mangroves (红树林) were to go ahead. (如果一个名为“迪拜红树林”的项目得以实施,迪拜一段长达70多公里的海岸线可能成为世界上最大的沿海再生项目的所在地。)”和下文对该项目的介绍可知,第一段是为了引出“迪拜红树林”项目这一主题。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段Bagherian的话Mangroves help protect against coastal erosion and rising sea levels, which are important issues for coastal cities like Dubai
根据第四段“Technology will play a role in both the development and the operations of Dubai Mangroves, with artificial intelligence (AI) constantly checking over the plants. (科技将在迪拜红树林的开发和运营中发挥作用,人工智能(AI)将不断检查这些植物。)”可知,在红树林项目中,科技能帮助仔细观察、检查这些植物。故选A。
根据划线词所在句“Drones will place the mangrove seeds in locations where they have the best chance of survival satellite pictures will then be used to gain a roundup of the mangrove coverage, making it easier to discover areas that require increased attention. (无人机将把红树林种子放在它们最有可能存活的地方,然后卫星图片将被用来获得红树林覆盖范围的roundup,从而更容易发现需要更多关注的地区。)”可知,从卫星图片上应该可以看到红树林覆盖范围的整体景观,从而更容易发现需要更多关注的地区,故roundup表示“整体景观”。故选C。
D
When it comes to humor and its effects on our mental health and well-being, former studies found that people who use humor to spread a good mood in a friendly and kind way tend to experience less worry.
However, Alberto Dionigi, a member of the International Society of Humor Studies, and his partners discovered a dark side to humor. According to their research, those who use negative comedy tend to report higher levels of worry and lower levels of well-being.
In their research, the team was able to recognize which type of humor is connected with worry and which type is related to well-being. The finding also ties in with studies on character strengths and mental health, suggesting that mental illness could be the result of the absence or overuse of your character strengths.
Take humor for example. If this is one of your character strengths but you are acting in an opposite way in life, you could become ill-humored. With its absence (perhaps you are in an environment unsuitable for humor) then you are likely to become joyless, and your mood and well-being could suffer. Overusing humor, however, may lead to others not taking you seriously. You could feel misunderstood and become angry or low-spirited and, even painful sometimes.
“Humor is one of the most effective forms of communication used by humans, and it holds significance in mental and physical health. It may have plenty of positive effects on managing emotions and prevent mental disorders,” said Dionigi. “But this could depend not only on what we find funny but also on how our laughter is expressed.”
12. What did Dionigi’s team find about humor?
A. Not all humors benefit our well-being.
B. Humor’s effect is caused by its receiver.
C. Humor is welcome by most of the people.
D. Negative humors can produce positive results.
13. According to the findings of the research, what should people do?
A. Judge what humor is painful.
B. Learn to accept character weaknesses.
C. Never use character strengths too much.
D. Develop various characters to be humorous.
14. Why is character strength mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the importance of humor.
B. To offer various research methods.
C. To suggest useful ways to treat humors.
D. To show the study result through examples.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Humor the Best Medicine? B. Why Is Humor Necessary to Us?
C. How Can We Make Use of Humor? D. What Can You Do to Be Humorous?
A 13. C 14. D 15. A

On one extremely hot day in Faisalabad, a city in northeast Pakistan, the sun was shining with its full might. Everyone was in a hurry to go back home and sit in a cool airy place.
Sara’s day at school was very busy and she was very tired. She had to wait for her father who had worked overtime to pick her up. Waiting in the school ground, Sara didn’t want to talk to anybody.
When Sara reached home, the food was ready and her mum was waiting for her. After greeting her mum, Sara sat on the chair to eat as she was very hungry. But her hunger turned into anger when she saw that her mum had cooked daal chawal (扁豆饭). She wanted to eat pizza that day while her mum had cooked daal chawal.
“Mum, Why don’t you cook the food I like? There are always vegetables and daal chawal at our table. I don’t want to eat them. I am not hungry anymore. I am going to order a pizza for myself,” Sara said as she stormed off in anger to her room.
Her mother said nothing. Upstairs in her room, Sara called her best friend Aliya, wanting to have a little chat so that she could express her frustration and find some comfort.
“Sara, how are you?” It was Aliya’s mother on the phone.
“I am fine, Aunty. Can I talk to Aliya?” Sara replied respectfully.
“Aliya is having her dinner. Today, I’ve cooked her favorite dish,” Aliya’s mother replied excitedly.
Sara became curious. “Aunty, what’s Aliya’s favorite dish?” Sara asked.
“Daal chawal, She loves it!” Aliya’s mother answered and continued, “What has your mother cooked today?”
“Daal chawal,” Sara replied in a low voice. She recalled her conversation with Aliya about food in school, where Aliya had mentioned the foods she often enjoyed at home but never complained about any of them.
Then Sara seemed to realize something and went downstairs.

After the dinner, Sara decided to cook something for her mother at the coming weekends.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Sara reached the kitchen door, she saw her mother was preparing pizza for her. Surprised and guilty, she couldn’t utter a word. When she saw her mother bathed in sweat, tears welled up in her eyes. She dragged herself to approach her mum with mixed feelings and hugged her tightly. “Sorry, Mum. I am so sorry for my rude behavior. I love you.” Sara apologized with shame. Mum was shocked by Sara’s sudden change, but soon realized and sighed with relief, saying “It’s okay. I am glad that you can enjoy the food I cook.” After hearing what her mother said, Sara nodded her head heavily, smiling at her mother. Later they enjoyed the dinner together happily.
After the dinner, Sara decided to cook something for her mother at weekends. Full of excitement and anxiety, Sara looked forward to the weekends. Then came the important day. At the thought of her mother’s favourite, she decided to cook daal chawal. She rushed to the market and picked food materials carefully. After making full preparations, Sara immersed herself in the kitchen. The following hours witnessed her efforts to make daal chawal that she had thought was easy to cook. It was noon when the daal chawal was ready. When Sara’s mother came back from work and saw the food on the table, she felt surprised and was moved to tears. The moment Sara saw her mum enjoying the food, she knew that she should be thankful for what she had.

A. Anxious. B. Helpful. C. Formal. D. Ordinary.

A. To present a concept. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To prove a theory. D. To argue for an idea.
9. What can we learn from Bagherian’s words?
A. Dubai suffers from pollution.
B. URB has finished the designs for studies.
C. The Dubai Mangroves project will be finished very soon.
D. Mangroves contribute to fighting against rising sea levels.
10. What can technology help to do in Dubai Mangrove project?
A. Watch mangroves carefully. B. Plant mangroves remotely.
C. Monitor the rising sea levels. D. Protect mangroves.
11. What does the underlined word “roundup” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Good memory. B. Great benefit. C. Whole view. D. Serious situation.

D Develop various characters to be humorous.
