Our old, artificial Christmas tree was in rough shape by the time we retired it. At least a decade had passed since my wife and I bought the tree, a medium-size fake tree with built-in lights, at a Target in Brooklyn and carried it on the subway to our tiny apartment. Over the years, we dragged that tree from apartment, jammed it onto a moving truck to Los Angeles and later packed the weathered box onto another moving truck, this time to Chicago and our current home. By the end, layers of duct tape (强力胶布) held the box together, the wear and tear of a decade of delivering holiday cheer.
Our little tree looked run down, but it was the only tree our family ever knew. It stands proud and glowing in the background of photos of me and my pregnant wife during our last Christmas in Brooklyn without children. Our oldest was born a month later during a January snowstorm. The tree shows up again in the next year’s photos, this time surrounded by holiday gifts for a boy about to turn 1. Then it appears in photos of our son and his 1-month-old brother, this time with California palm trees just outside the door. And in more recent photos, our tree lights up windows overlooking shining Chicago snow. This year, after much debate, we decided to retire our dear old tree, with its bent branches and the lights that had burned out years ago. Rather than feel depressed, we used the moment to launch a new family tradition: our first real Christmas tree.
So here’s a toast to all your family’s traditions—the old and the new. I hope you enjoy this issue, which we have filled with stories of seasonal joy and holiday cheer. Happy holidays!
4. Where is the author’s present home?
A. In Chicago. B. In Brooklyn. C. In California. D. In Los Angeles.
5. Why did the author keep the old tree for so long?
A. His budget was tight. B. He was attached to it.
C. It was in good condition. D. It was environmentally-friendly.
6. Who is probably the author?
A. An editor. B. A salesman. C. A delivery man. D. A home designer.
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. The finest diamond must be cut.
B. Out with the old, in with the new.
C. Old friends and old wine are best.
D. All things in their being are good for something.

If you’ve noticed you’re getting less while your bill almost stays the same, it’s not just you. “Shrinkflation” — reducing a product’s size or quantity while keeping its price stable — is showing up in shops around the world.
As the global economy struggles with inflation (通货膨胀), rising material costs and higher human cost, consumers are bearing the increasing production prices. “Consumers are more likely to notice how their purchases are affecting their wallets than the amount of product lost when sizes decrease,” says Mark Stiving, the chief pricing educator at Impact Pricing. As a result, companies use shrinkflation to make consumers “less painful”.
Yet even as shrinkflation comes with inflation, the problem doesn’t end after inflation does. Once the new sizes are on the shelf, they are likely to stay that way. “Shoppers don’t have a choice. They have to adapt themselves to the changes,” adds Stiving. There are rare exceptions, but companies generally take the opportunity to get more profits.
For many companies, shrinkflation seems to be unavoidable. In food industry, for example, where customers are highly sensitive to price, lifting prices might make customers jump ship to another brand. But facing the continuous inflation, the companies have to do something to maintain their profits. Introducing small reduction in the size of their goods should enable them to improve profits while keeping their prices competitive. But once customers notice the change, they might feel fooled, leading to a loss of trust and confidence.
Some grocers are using stickers to remind shoppers of shrinkflation, but still, it’s a tough hit to the bottom line — especially because the price of products generally doesn’t fall as inflation does. Consumers may need to examine both price and size sensibly as they shop, and make sure they don’t fall into the trap of that super size on the shelf.
8. Why does shrinkflation make consumers “less painful” according to Stiving?
A. Shrinkflation reduces human cost. B. Shrinkflation raises purchasing power.
C. Consumers become more aware of size. D. Consumers experience little increase in cost.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The concerns of shoppers. B. The interests of companies.
C. The impact of shrinkflation. D. The phenomenon of inflation.
10. What is the author’s attitude to the shrinkflation in paragraph 4?
A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Dismissive. D. Indifferent.
11. What should consumers do according to the last paragraph?
A. Draw a bottom line. B. Put warning stickers.
C. Choose smaller packs. D. Make a wise decision.
D
The hour of sleep lost in the change to Daylight Saving Time (DST), the practice of setting the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the summer months to make better use of natural daylight, appears to reduce people’s possibility to help others, the researchers found. Specifically, they showed that average donations to one U. S. — based nonprofit organization dropped by around 10 percent in the workweek after the time change compared with four weeks before and after the change.
To test the link between sleep loss and generosity, Ben Simon of the University of California, Berkeley and her team first brought 23 young adults into the lab for two nights and had the participants sleep through one night and stay awake for another night. In the mornings, participants completed an altruism questionnaire (利他主义问卷) rating their likelihood of helping others. For instance, participants rated on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 for being least likely to help and 5 for most likely, whether they would give up their seat on a bus to a stranger or offer a ride to a coworker in need. Roughly 80 percent of participants showed less likelihood of helping others when sleep-deprived (缺觉的) than when rested. The researchers then compared each participant’s brain activity in a rested state with that in a sleep-deprived state, which showed that sleep deprivation reduced activity in a network of brain regions linked to the ability to empathize (共情) with others.
In another experiment, the researchers found 136 participants online and had them keep a sleep record for four nights. The researchers found that the more time participants spent being awake in bed, a measure of poor sleep, the lower their altruism questionnaire scores. That drop in altruism held true both when comparing individuals to themselves and when averaging scores across the group. Focusing on DST, the researchers looked at charitable donations from 2001 to 2016 to a charity: in the workweek following the time change, total donations, which typically averaged roughly $82 per day, dropped to about $73 per day.
Scientists say the result tells a more complex story about how inefficient sleep affects decisions on helping others. But unlike many other social problems — think about climate change — this one has a ready solution if you think about promoting sleep.
12. What did the first experiment require participants to do?
A. Work extra hours.
B. Do good every day.
C. Have different hours of sleep.
D. Rate other participants’ behaviors.
13. What can be inferred about the second experiment in Paragraph 3?
A. Its result stands in every way.
B. DST does more harm than good.
C. Altruism can be developed during long sleep.
D. Its application goes beyond one’s expectation.
14. How did the scientists see the impact of sleep deprivation?
A. It has drawn wide attention.
B. It’s a serious social problem.
C. It’s a short- term phenomenon.
D. It can be solved by individuals themselves.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Sleep Shapes Social Experiences
B. Lack of Sleep Reduces One’s Kindness
C. Daylight Saving Time Affects Sleep
D. The US Finds Ways to Raise Donations

What color is a tennis ball? Ask your classmates, and they might give you some surprising answers.
US magazine The Atlantic recently asked 30,000 people this question. Among them, 52 percent said tennis balls are green, 42 percent said they are yellow, and 6 percent went with other colors. According to the International Tennis Federation, tennis balls are yellow. ___16___
Scientists call this color constancy (色彩恒常性). For example, we know that China's flag is red. When we see it during sunset or under purple light, we still know that it is red, even if it looks like a different color. ___17___ Even if the object is seen in different kinds of light later, our brain can still tell its true color.
___18___ It appears to be a combination of yellow, a ''warm'' color and green, a ''cool'' color.
According to The Atlantic, when our brains try to figure out what color the ball is, some people ignore ''cool'' colors, such as green, blue and purple. So they see the ball as being yellow.___19___ They see the ball as being green.
___20___ In 2015, a girl posted a picture of a dress online. Some people believed the dress was black and blue—but others thought it was gold and white. They had different opinions based on whether they ignored ''cold'' or ''warm'' colors.
A. It is not just tennis balls that have such a confusing color.
B. But others ignore ''warm'' colors, such as red, yellow and orange.
C. However, the color of a tennis ball is not as pure as the flag.
D. It is difficult for some people to distinguish yellow from green.
E. So why did so many people say that they're green?
F. Certain parts of our brain are in charge of recognizing colors.
G. When we first see an object in natural light, our brains recognize its true color.

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. D
根据文章第二段““Consumers are more likely to notice how their purchases are affecting their wallets than the amount of product lost when sizes decrease,” says Mark Stiving, the chief pricing educator at Impact Pricing. As a result, companies use shrinkflation to make consumers “less painful”.(“相较于产品尺寸变小导致的分量减少,消费者更容易察觉到购物对自己钱包的影响。”影响力定价公司的首席定价培训师Mark Stiving说道。因此,企业采用“缩水式通胀”的策略,让消费者“痛苦感减轻”)”可知,因为缩水式通胀是在保持价格稳定的同时减少产品尺寸或数量,所以消费者在成本上的增加不明显,这使得他们感觉 “痛苦感减轻”。故选D。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Yet even as shrinkflation comes with inflation, the problem doesn’t end after inflation does. Once the new sizes are on the shelf, they are likely to stay that way. “Shoppers don’t have a choice. They have to adapt themselves to the changes,” adds Stiving. There are rare exceptions, but companies generally take the opportunity to get more profits.(然而,即便 “缩水式通胀”与通货膨胀相伴而生,但通货膨胀结束后,这个问题并不会随之消失。一旦新的产品规格摆上货架,它们很可能会保持不变。“购物者别无选择,他们不得不适应这些变化。”Stiving补充道。虽然存在极少数例外情况,但企业总体上会抓住这个机会获取更多利润)”可知,第三段指出即使通货膨胀结束,缩水式通胀带来的产品新规格可能会保持不变,消费者只能适应,且企业通常借此获利,这些都是在阐述缩水式通胀带来的影响。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“For many companies, shrinkflation seems to be unavoidable.(对于许多企业而言,“缩水式通胀”似乎难以避免)”以及“But facing the continuous inflation, the companies have to do something to maintain their profits. Introducing small reduction in the size of their goods should enable them to improve profits while keeping their prices competitive. But once customers notice the change, they might feel fooled, leading to a loss of trust and confidence.(但面对持续的通货膨胀,企业必须采取措施来维持利润。对产品进行小幅减量,既能让企业提高利润,又能保持价格竞争力。但一旦消费者察觉到这种变化,他们可能会觉得自己受到了欺骗,进而对企业失去信任和信心)”可知,作者在该段中从企业和消费者两个角度分析了缩水式通胀,既阐述了企业采用这种策略的原因,也说明了对消费者造成的影响,没有偏向任何一方,是客观的态度。故选B。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Consumers may need to examine both price and size sensibly as they shop, and make sure they don’t fall into the trap of that super size on the shelf.(消费者在购物时,可能需要理智地审视价格和产品分量,确保自己不会掉入货架上那些“超大份”商品的陷阱)”可知,作者建议消费者购物时理智审视价格和产品分量,避免掉入陷阱,即做出明智的决策。故选D。

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B
