I’m very thankful to the cat and it always makes me think of the time I was with him.
Five years ago, when my father was dying, I travelled a thousand miles from home to be with him in his last days. I felt very sad and it was one of the most difficult and painful times in my life.
After he died, I stayed alone in his flat. There were so many things to do. I was lonely and I hated the silence (寂静) of the flat.
But one evening something broke the silence: I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little cat on the steps. He was thin and poor. He looked the way I felt. I brought him inside and gave him a can of fish. He ate it and then almost fell asleep at once.
The next morning I checked with neighbors and learned that his owner left him. His owner had moved out, so the little cat was there all alone, just like I was. As I walked back to the flat, I tried to work out what to do with him. Having something else to take care of seemed like the very last thing I needed. But as soon as I opened the flat door, he ran to me and jumped into my arms. It was clear from that moment that he didn’t want to go anywhere. I started calling him Willis in order to remember my father’s best friend.
From then on, things grew easier. With Willis in my lap, time seemed to pass much faster. When the time finally came for me to return home, I had to decide what to do about Willis. There was absolutely no way I would leave without him.
It’s been five years since my father died. Over the years, several people have said how nice it was of me to rescue (营救) the cat. But I know that we rescued each other. I may have given him a home but he gave me something greater.

Is it possible to read a map on your coat in the near future? Yes, your coat!
Professor Peng Huisheng and his team at Fudan University have made a new kind of cloth. We can use it as a digital screen (电子屏幕). They spend 12 years trying to make “digital cloth”. The first is to find out the right thread (线). After checking many of them, they choose two special ones. One can light up (发光), and the other is conductive (导电).
The coat will be great. You can not only fold it, but also wash it. The researchers wash it 500 times and fold it 1,000 times. But the coat is almost unchanged. That’s because this coat is made of a kind of soft but strong fibers (纤维) and fits people well. You can wear it just like any other coat. The difference is that it can work like a smartphone. It is just like putting a phone screen into the coat. Wear it and then it can show you a lot of information you want.
Professor Peng believes that the new coat can be used in many ways. For example, a driver or bike rider can use it as a GPS map on his or her arm when travelling around. Those who can’t hear or speak can also use it to talk with others. In the hospital, the doctor can get the health data of a patient through his coat. That helps look after them better.
