China has a long history of using incense (熏香). Chinese people love incense and know how to make it. Different kinds of Chinese herbal(药草的)medicines were chosen by ancient Chinese to make incense that could clean the air and keep the mind clear.
As early as the pre-Qin period, people burnt incense to wish for a better life. Later, it was found that incense could be used to keep away insects. Gradually, the ancient people began to use incense to eliminate (清除) foul gas (臭气) and avoid illness.
In ancient times, incense would also be used to tell time. For example, in the calculation (计算) of exam time people would light a stick of incense. When it burned out, the exam was over. This is what Chinese people call “the duration of a stick of incense”. What’s more, incense in the shape of balls would be put in a special bag. Different smells of incense can work differently. When it is heated, the cloth covering this bag also smells fantastic.
It’s said that incense can also be used to improve people’s health. When I feel stressed, the pleasant smell can make me relaxed. I feel that I can taste the classical culture from the incense. Ancient Chinese people believed that beautiful things that smell good could help people relax.
Chinese people still like incense now. It brings out the intelligence of the mind and silently harmonizes (协调) the mind and the body.
23.Why did people during the pre-Qin period burn incense?
A.To wish for a better life. B.To keep away insects. C.To keep mind clear.
24.Which of the following can best explain the meaning of the underlined sentence in the text?
A.The heat of a stick of incense to produce.
B.The time of a stick of incense to burn out.
C.The smoke of a stick of incense to spread.
25.How does the writer feel about the pleasant smell of incense?
A.Excited. B.Relaxed. C.Stressed.
26.In which unit of a textbook can the text be found?
A.Unit 1 World Travel. B.Unit 2 Body Language. C.Unit 3 Traditional Culture.
23.A 24.B 25.B 26.C
根据“As early as the pre-Qin period, people burnt incense to wish for a better life.” 故选A。
根据“In ancient times, incense would also be used to tell time. For example, in the calculation (计算) of exam time people would light a stick of incense. When it burned out, the exam was over. This is what Chinese people call ‘the duration of a stick of incense.’” 这应就是中国人所说的一根香燃尽的时间,the duration of a stick of incense“一根香燃尽的时间”。
根据“When I feel stressed, the pleasant smell can make me relaxed.”

Each year on Feb 21, UNESCO(联合国教科文组织)holds an International Mother Language Day (IMLD).The event is to help people to pay attention to the disappearance of the world’s languages; many of them are disappearing each year. UNESCO sees this as a terrible fact.
What happens when a language dies out? Something great is lost-not just sounds and marks but the way that people understand the world and communicate with each other. We keep different cultures and traditions through languages. Kill a language and all these are killed, too.
Through IMLD, more and more people come to realize he terrible situation and try to stop it. Google’s 2018 Endangered Languages Project is a good example. Many speakers and protectors of endangered languages upload (上传)texts, audios and videos to the project website. They want to introduce the way that people communicate and express themselves around the world.
The Myaamia Project is the same kind of effort to revive the language spoken by the Miami tribes (部落)of the United States. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which died out in the 1960s.
These activities give life to those endangered languages. People who work to keep Languages alive are not limited to the past. Many young people design apps and use social media to support their activities. They spread the word “to save the world”.
So, while the problem of disappearing languages remains a very serious one, there is hope. We all have a special feeling of our mother language. This is why we should remember the wise words of late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
27. UNESCO holds IMLD every year in order to help people to ________.
A. show their talents in learning languages
B. realize the situation of endangered languages
C. practice reading skills of mother languages
28. What did people do in Google’s 2018 Endangered Languages Project?
A. Discuss how to make good use of Google. B. Offer online courses on endangered languages.
C. Share materials about endangered languages online.
29. What does the underlined word “revive” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 复活. B. 学习. C. 创造.
30. The writer mentions Nelson Mandela’s words in order to ________.
A. tell the importance of one’s mother language
B. show his contributions to language protection
C. tell the trouble in learning endangered languages
B 28. C 29. A 30. A
根据第一段“The event is to help people to pay attention to the disappearance of the world’s languages; many of them are disappearing each year”每年的2月21日, 联合国教科文组织都会举办国际母语日大会。
根据第三段“Many speakers and protectors of endangered languages upload texts, audios and videos to the project website. They want to introduce the way that people communicate and express themselves around the world” 许多濒危语言的说话者和保护者将文本、音频和视频上传到项目网站。
根据第四段“Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which died out in the 1960s”项目成员的工作是鼓励人们用这种语言学习和交流, 这种语言在20世纪60年代就消失了。 故选A。
根据最后一段“This is why we should remember the wise words of late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela: ‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.’” 故选A。
Many parents like setting family rules for their kids. When kids break rules, parents will give them some punishments. 31 In fact, when you tell your kids about a new rule, you should talk with them about the price they should pay for breaking the rule-what the punishment will be.
Punishments you set should be reasonable, without violence(暴力)or threat(恐吓). 32 You should punish your kids only in ways you have discussed before the rule is broken.
A study shows that the most popular punishment is to limit kids’ TV time.
It is understandable that you’ll be angry when rules are broken. 33 Sharing your feelings of anger disappointment or sadness with your kids can have a better effect on them. Try to do that. When your kids know what they have done has made you sad, they will feel guilty. 34
35 If your rules or ways of punishment make them unhappy or under a lot of pressure, are they helpful?
A.For example, if you find your son smoking, you may limit his social activities for two weeks.
B.When they know their actions influence you greatly, they will obey rules better.
C.And the punishments aren’t included in rules.
D.Rules are made to help your kids behave better.
E.Punishment is a way to express your anger, but it’s not a very good one.
【答案】31.C 32.A 33.E 34.B 35.D
31.根据下文“In fact, when you tell your kids about a new rule, you should talk with them about the price they should pay for breaking the rule-what the punishment will be.”
故选A。
33.根据上文“It is understandable that you’ll be angry when rules are broken.”和下文“Sharing your feelings of anger disappointment or sadness with your kids can have a better effect on them.”
34.根据上文“When your kids know what they have done has made you sad, they will feel guilty.”
35.根据下文“If your rules or ways of punishment make them unhappy or under a lot of pressure, are they helpful?”
III.

He didn’t tell it in the way of complaint. In fact, every sentence started with a “thanks” to God for a blessing. He thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going through his disease.
Next morning just 43 he left, he said, “Could I please come back and stay here the next time I have a treatment? I won’t bother you too much. I can sleep fine in a chair.” I told him he was welcome to come again. The little old man grinned (咧嘴笑), “Your children made me feel at home. 44 are often troubled by my face, while children don’t seem to mind.”

According to recent reports, ancient cities were found in the Amazon. They were connected
by a large network(网络) of roads. The cities caught attention of many scientists, as they are much larger than others in the Amazon.
What's more, these cities are between 3,000 and1.500 years old. Why the people who built them disappeared isn't clear. It is often thought that the Amazon rainforest was largely not touched by humans before Columbus reached the Americas in the 15th century. In fact, the first Europeans reported seeing many farms and towns in the area.
Some scientists believe the Amazon may have thousands of ancient buildings that have not been discovered. And the population of the Amazon could be as high as 8 million before Columbus' arrival.
Rostain and his partners have been studying ancient sites(遗址) in Ecuador since the 1990s. Ancient cities of the Amazon rainforest were first found there in the 1970s.But only a few of them have been dug out.
Nine years ago, Rostain's team created a 3D map of the surface under most vegetation(植被) with radars(雷达).The map shows some things that cannot be seen by us normally. There were five large cities in the area that were surveyed. They could be described as garden cities, because of many trees there. The survey also showed a network of straight roads on the sides. The longest is at least 25 kilometers, and might continue beyond(超出)the area that was surveyed.
56.Why did the ancient cities catch many scientists' attention?
57.What did the first Europeans report seeing in the Amazon?
58. Where were ancient cities of Amazon rainforest discovered first?
59. How many large cities were surveyed in the Amazon?
60.What did the survey show about the ancient cities?
56.Because they are much larger than others in the Amazon. 57.Many farms and towns. 58.In Ecuador.. 59.Five. 60.Many trees and a network of straight roads.
56. Because they are much larger than others in the Amazon. 根据第一段最后一句“The cities caught attention...much larger than others in the Amazon.”
57. Many farms and towns. 根据第二段最后一句“In fact, the first Europeans reported seeing many farms and towns in the area."可知,第一批欧洲人在亚马孙地区看到了许多农场和城镇。
58. In Ecuador. 根据第四段前两句“Rostain and his partners...first found there in the1970s.”
59. Five. 根据最后一段中的“There were five large cities in the area that were surveyed."可知,亚马孙地区有五座大型城市被勘测。
60. Many trees and a network of straight roads.根据最后一段中的“They could be...also showed a network of straight roads on the sides.”
