We all know Patti LaBelle as an iconic singer and performer, but what you might not know is that she is nearly as passionate about cooking as she is about music.
“From the time I was a little girl, I knew there were two things in this world I was born to do: sing and cook. I’ve spent my life developing my voice and my recipes, and to tell you the truth, I’m hard pressed to say where I’m happiest — in concert or in the kitchen.” Patti shared her stories in her first cookbook, LaBelle Cuisine.
For Patti, cooking is about love. Taught by the great Southern cooks in her family — her mother, father, and aunts Hattie Mae and Joshia Mae, Patti has kept these family treasures close to her heart. But now, she invites you into her kitchen and serves up more than 100 of her favorite recipes, from down-home favorites — Fierce Fried Corn and Aunt Hattie’s Sweet Tater Bread — to good-enough-for-dinner-parties dishes, such as Roast Leg of Lamb and Aunt Joshia’s Philadelphia Buttercake.
Wherever Patti goes, so do her electric frying pans and bottles of hot sauce. After her raise-the-roof shows, she often goes back to her hotel room and cooks a meal for her band or celebrity visitors. When she’s at holiday time or at family gatherings, Patti likes nothing more than to head for her kitchen. She expects that pleasure brought by satisfying cuisine will fill your heart just as her recipes will fill your stomach.
LaBelle Cuisine has the recipes you’ll want to cook, eat, and share with friends. Filled with the legendary singer’s favorite dishes and step-by-step instructions on how to prepare them, the book makes you feel like Patti’s in the kitchen with you, demonstrating the recipes and techniques that can turn anybody into a wonderful cook.

In an important decision for environmental management, the United States has approved the Chumash Heritage National Marine Reserve along California’s central coast. Covering 4.543 square miles- nearly four times the size of Yosemite National Park - the Reserve will protect a biodiverse marine ecosystem from threats like oil drilling and deep-sea mining.
This achievement is the result of years of efforts by the Chumash people, who have long viewed themselves as guardians of both land and sea. “We brought communities together with overwhelming support to protect this area,” said Violet Sage Walker, chairwoman of the Northern Chumash Tribal Council, who first proposed the conservation area in 2015.
The new conservation area stretches over 116 miles of coastline, providing a heaven for at-risk species such as southern sea otters, abalone (鲍鱼), and blue whales. It also includes vital kelp (海藻) forests, which not only support marine life but also play a crucial role in carbon storage, absorbing up to 20 times more carbon than forests on the land.
While the final boundaries are smaller than initially proposed, the approval is still considered as a significant victory. Notably, the decision comes during debates over offshore wind energy projects in the region. While renewable energy is crucial, local people have expressed concerns about potential impacts on marine life from increased ocean noise and port development.
Federal agencies have promised to cooperate with local communities in managing the Reserve. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) plans to implement a co-management model to ensure meaningful involvement from local communities.
As she reflects on this monumental achievement, Walker expressed a sense of fulfillment. “I feel complete, like I’ve fulfilled a promise and an obligation to my family and to the earth,” she said. This historic approval represents the government’s commitment to supporting locally-led protections for cultural and natural sites across the country.
8. Why did Chumash people advocate establishing the conservation area?
A. To explore the ocean by drilling and mining.
B. To maintain the local biodiverse marine ecosystem.
C. To develop tourism along California’s central coast.
D. To strengthen the unity of Chumash people.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on about the Reserve?
A. Its practical functions. B. Its large size and location.
C. Its conservation measures. D. Its role in absorbing carbon.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. The final boundaries of the Reserve is very small.
B. All exploitation activities will be banned in this area.
C. The locals are violently opposed to renewable energy.
D. The locals give the marine conservation higher priority.
11. What’s the purpose of NOAA’s plan to perform a co-management model?
A. To emphasize the ecosystem-based management.
B. To popularize local people’s values and traditions.
C. To guarantee the community-based management.
D. To balance marine conservation efforts with other uses.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C

Parenting can feel like sailing in an endless sea of choices, styles and ideas, never knowing if you are making the right decision for your child or not. On the one hand, no two children are the same. On the other hand, there must be some similarities or at least some general methods that work for all children and that are worth following.
Whether you believe in rigorous boundaries or offering total freedom, it’s all about balance. And that is what lighthouse parenting, the new and modern parenting style that is becoming more and more popular, is all about.
Lighthouse parenting, founded by Dr. Ken Ginsburg, is a parenting style that is all about the most important aspects of parenting, such as open communication, according to Parents. Lighthouse parenting, he explained, is about maintaining the balance between providing your child with guidance, love and protection, while also allowing them to make their own mistakes and learn things on their own.
Some parenting styles such as helicopter parenting, are less about giving your child freedom and allowing them to experience things on their own. Lighthouse parenting, like the name suggests, believes in being there for your child like a lighthouse is there at night, available and present when needed, however not providing solutions all the time, therefore allowing the child to grow and learn to be independent.
According to the Children’s Book Council (CBC), this parenting style is becoming popular as parents are looking for a middle ground in parenting, something that does not add too much pressure on them. There is too much information out there for parents nowadays and it can get overwhelming. Lighthouse parenting seems to be a more reasonable choice.
Children that are raised in this style can become healthy, functional adults, as they are given the tools to understand the world and to be well-adjusted. They aren’t scared of making mistakes and also take responsibility for them. Their parents also are less burnt out, as they are able to take a step back and be there for their child more in the background.
12. What does the underlined word “rigorous” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Strict. B. Free. C. Consistent. D. General.
13. How does the author explain the parenting styles in paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples. B. By justifying assumptions.
C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing causes and effects.
14. Why do parents prefer lighthouse parenting according to the CBC?
A. It is a new and trendy concept. B. It stops putting additional stress on them.
C. It requires minimum effort from parents. D. It ensures kids’ perfect behavior.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Free-range Parenting: The New Parenting Style
B. Helicopter Parenting: Overprotective Parenting Style
C. Lighthouse Parenting: The Uninvolved Parenting Style
D. Lighthouse Parenting: The Balanced Parenting Style
【答案】12 A 13. C 14. B 15. D

【16题详解】
根据上文“When it comes to achieving success, having a positive mindset is truly crucial. A positive mindset doesn’t imply turning a blind eye to the difficulties and challenges that come our way.(当谈到取得成功时,拥有积极的心态是至关重要的。积极的心态并不意味着对我们遇到的困难和挑战视而不见)”可知,前文提到积极的心态并不意味着对困难和挑战视而不见,此处应表明积极心态对待困难的正确方式,故G选项“相反,要把它们看作是成长和学习的机会”符合语境,故选G。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Moreover, those with a positive mindset also direct their energy towards seeking solutions rather than problems.(此外,那些有积极心态的人也会把精力放在寻求解决方案而不是问题上)”以及后文“This active way of thinking allows them to take decisive actions and bring about positive changes in their lives.(这种积极的思维方式使他们能够采取果断的行动,给他们的生活带来积极的变化)”可知,前文说积极心态的人把精力用于寻找解决方案而非问题,故本句进一步阐述了这种积极行动,不消极抱怨的特点,故C选项“他们不会浪费时间抱怨现状”符合语境,故选C。

In the small, quiet town of Oakwood, there lived a lonely old man named Henry. Henry had lost his wife a few years ago and his children had moved to the big city, leaving him alone in the old, creaky house at the end of the lane (小巷). Every day, he would sit on his porch (门廊), watching the world go by with a sad look in his eyes.
One sunny morning, while Henry was tending to his small garden, he heard a strange noise coming from the bushes. He went to investigate and found a small, shivering puppy with a wounded paw (爪子). Its big, brown eyes looked up at Henry with a mixture of pain and fear. Henry’s heart melted, and he gently picked up the puppy and took it inside.
He cleaned the puppy’s wound and fed it some food from his kitchen. As the days passed, the puppy grew stronger and more playful. Henry named it Buddy, and soon, the two became inseparable. Buddy’s presence brought new life to Henry’s days, and he found himself smiling and laughing more often.
However, one afternoon, as Henry was taking Buddy for a walk in the park, a fancy car pulled up beside them. A well-dressed woman stepped out and her eyes widened when she saw Buddy. She claimed that the puppy was hers and had been missing for weeks. Henry was shocked and heartbroken. He didn’t want to let Buddy go, but the woman showed some pictures on her phone as proof.
Henry’s hands trembled as he held Buddy tighter. The woman noticed his grief and softened her tone. She explained that she had been searching everywhere for the puppy and had been very worried Henry told her how he had found Buddy and how much the little dog had come to mean to him.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Touched by Henry’s story, the woman hesitated. She looked at Buddy, who wagged his tail joyfully, clearly torn between two people he loved. Finally, the woman sighed and said, “How about this, we can share him?” Henry was stunned but nodded with tears in his eyes. They agreed that Henry would take care of Buddy during the week, and the woman would have him on weekends. It was an unusual arrangement, but one that satisfied both their hearts. As Buddy happily barked, Henry felt a weight lift from his chest - he would still have his companion for most of the days.
At weekends, the woman would visit Henry to drop off or pick up Buddy. These visits gradually turned into friendly chats and shared cups of tea. They talked about their lives, their joys, and their sorrows, and soon, a bond formed between them. Henry’s once-empty house was now filled with laughter and warmth, not just because of Buddy, but because of a newfound friendship. Together, Buddy had not only taught both of them about love but had also created a bridge between two lonely souls.

C. To develop tourism along California’s central coast.
D To strengthen the unity of Chumash people.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on about the Reserve?

A Strict. B. Free. C. Consistent. D. General.
13. How does the author explain the parenting styles in paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples. B. By justifying assumptions.
C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing causes and effects.
14. Why do parents prefer lighthouse parenting according to the CBC?
A. It is a new and trendy concept. B. It stops putting additional stress on them.
C. It requires minimum effort from parents. D. It ensures kids’ perfect behavior.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Free-range Parenting: The New Parenting Style
B. Helicopter Parenting: Overprotective Parenting Style
C. Lighthouse Parenting: The Uninvolved Parenting Style
D. Lighthouse Parenting: The Balanced Parenting Style
