My husband Tyler and I made the decision to raise a guide dog puppy. After attending meetings with Anina Green, the club leader, I signed up eagerly. On April 27, we got our puppy, Escort. Holding him for the first time was amazing. He was soft, sleepy, and surprisingly large.
We attended puppy kindergarten weekly to learn how to train him. For the first six months, he was always on a leash. During the initial eight weeks, we stayed home, taught him commands and held his leash. We watched him grow and learn, his little tail wagging with excitement every time he finished a new task.
The guide dog club was like a family. We went on outings with other wonderful dogs. Escort’s first group outing was to the city museum. We also visited a shopping mall, a baseball game, a fire station, and the airport. With the club’s help, Escort became a dependable companion by eight months.
When he turned one, it was time to send him for formal training. We were in love with him but had to say goodbye. Seeing pictures of him with his new owner makes me happy. Knowing he’ ll improve her life fills me with pride. I’ll always cherish the memories we made with Escort.

Each different part of China has its own special forms of traditional art.
These usually try to show the things that are important in life, such as love, beauty and family. The most common things, from paper to clay to bamboo, are turned into objects of beauty.
According to Chinese history, sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. Today, sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. When the lanterns are lit, they slowly rise into the air like small hot-air balloons for all to see. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Paper cutting has been around for over 1,500 years. Paper cutting sounds very easy but it can be difficult to do. The paper, usually red, is folded before it is cut with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, animals, and things about Chinese history. During the Spring Festival, they are put on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
Chinese clay art is famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real. The pieces are usually cute children or lively characters from a Chinese fairy tale or historical story. The pieces are carefully shaped by band from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to air-dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. They are then polished and painted. It takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty.
1.Why is Chinese clay art famous?
______________________________________________________
2.What do people hope to get from paper cutting and sky lanterns? (At least two points)

When you come back to your home on a hot summer night, you find that the lights are already on, the air conditioner (空调) has been working for 30 minutes to cool the room, and the rice you prepared this morning has been cooked right before you arrive. This is the magic of a smart home.
A smart home is a special home where you can remotely control things with your phone. There are many kinds of smart home products, from making your home warm to making it bright, and even keeping you safe.
And they are really “smart”. Smart home apps even have self-learning skills. It means that they can learn when you usually do things and change to suit you. Some can also set lights to change based on sunrise or sunset times. And some systems can tell you if there is someone in your home when you are not there, or even call for help if there is danger.
Although smart homes are getting more popular in China and around the world, there are some problems from time to time. Paul Boag, a man from the UK who helps people with their technology, wrote that it is not always easy to set up these smart things. Even his wife, who used to be an engineer, found fitting the smart home light switches (开关) was a huge challenge for her. Besides, the smart home apps can be trouble. Many of them are not designed well, and each device (设备) has its own app. This means you have to deal with a lot of apps. But except for these problems, smart homes are still a great way to make life easier.
1.What is a smart home?

2.What are the disadvantages of smart homes?

Every time a new year rolls around, people set out to live a better life. They promise themselves that they will lose weight, find a new job or maybe even take that vacation they’ve always talked about. But why do we make these promises to ourselves and where did this tradition come from? It started with the ancient Babylonians (巴比伦人).
Around 4,000 years ago in Babylon (巴比伦), the earliest recorded celebration honoring the coming of a new year was held. The calendar was different back then. The Babylonians started the new year in late March during the first new moon after the spring equinox (春分). The events were known as the Akitu festival (阿基图庆典), which lasted 11 days. They celebrated the rebirth of the sun god. Babylonians made promises in order to make all of their gods happy. They felt this would help them start the new year with better luck. This is how the tradition started.
New Year’s resolutions (决心) continued on with the Romans. When the early Roman calendar no longer went well with Earth’s traveling around the sun, Caesar decided to make a change. He talked to the best astronomers (天文学家) and mathematicians (数学家) of his time and introduced the Julian calendar, which is similar to our Gregorian calendar. Caesar set January I as the first day of the year to honor Janus, the god of new beginnings. The Romans celebrated the New Year by offering animals to Janus in a special way.
To this day, the traditions of the ancient Babylonians and Romans are still widely spread all over the world. However, not many people keep the resolutions they make. Google launched a Resolution Map in 2013 to see how many people keep their resolutions. Only eight percent of people were successful in achieving them.
However, with 4,000 years worth of history telling us so, this tradition is certain to live on. That statistic(数字) is hard to argue with.
1.Where did the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions come from?

2.How did the Romans celebrate the New Year?

3.Would you like to make a New Year’s resolution? Why?

Recently, a new kind of tourism called special forces style tourism (特种兵式旅游) is becoming popular in China. This new kind of tourism means visiting tourist attractions in a short, intense period.
People who like taking photos and making recordings may choose this kind of tourism. With the popularity of social media, people prefer presenting their photos and get “likes” from their friends. At the same time, tourist attractions provide some special photo slots (打卡点) to attract visitors. Therefore, special forces style tourism has become a way for people to show their lives and experiences by sharing photos and recordings, which makes people get a sense of satisfaction.
Not all Chinese people enjoy special forces style tourism. Many people prefer to take a long vacation to go to a place for detailed tourism and experience the local way of life. They tend to enjoy slow-paced (慢速的) deep travel, by staying for a long time to gain a deeper understanding of local culture, customs, and experience local life. The low-paced travel focuses more on feelings and experiences.
However, special forces tours do not necessarily mean that you have not fully experienced the charm of tourism. People remember the details of their travels more deeply by taking photos and recording them. These photos have become an important way for them to recall their travels, so they are not just looking at them without feeling them.
The value of tourism lies in discovery, experience, and perception (感知). Therefore, whether it is special forces style tourism or slow-paced deep travel, it is worth respecting and understanding. We should all feel the scenery of the journey with out hearts, see with our eyes and walk with our feet.
1.Who may choose the special style tourism according to the passage?
______________________________________________________
2.What does the value of tourism lie in?
______________________________________________________
3.Would you like to choose special forces style tourism or slow-paced deep travel? Why?

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
1.Why did the writer check the phone more often than before when he was terribly tired out?
______________________________________________________
2.What changes did the writer have after three weeks without a mobile phone?

3.(开放性设问)Would you like to follow the writer’s example? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)

My name is Peter. I come from a small village, close to New York. I’ve been crazy about Chinese history and culture. So I learned Putonghua in the university and I am good at speaking it.
Three years ago, I came to China. I am an English teacher in a middle school in Suzhou, a city in East China. Now I get used to the life here except one thing—the language(方言).
When I talk with older people, they prefer to speak Suzhou dialect. It is famous for its soft words, and is known as the soft dialect(语调) which sounds very musical and pleasing. But it is quite different from Putonghua. Putonghua has only four tones while there are no less than seven in Suzhou dialect. Besides, the differences between Suzhou dialect and Putonghua go far beyond (超过) tones and pronunciations. There is rich information about the history and culture of Suzhou in its dialect. Apart from that, some pieces of slang (俗语) and expressions just don’t sound the same in Putonghua.
I made a lot of mistakes when communicating with Suzhou people here. However hard it is, I am already on the way to becoming a native (母语的) speaker, speaking like a local of Suzhou.
1.Which country does Peter come from?
______________________________________________________
2.What makes it difficult for Peter to understand Suzhou dialect?

3.Do you think it’s important for foreigners to learn the local dialect? Why or why not?

Also we’re to have better skin, better memories and longer lives. When you lose even one hour of sleep for any reason, it will influence your performance the next day.
In general, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, but a recent survey found that, on workdays, only 21% of them really get a full eight hours of sleep, and another 21% get less than six. For teenagers, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night. However, about 80% of high school students don’t get enough sleep because of their schoolwork or some bad habits.
27% of people throughout the world have sleep problems. Now there are over 80 kinds of sleep disorders, and most people know little about their danger. So, for our good life and work, it’s necessary for us to realize the importance of sleep and try to have a good sleep.
