Passage 8
When you finish some chores at home, will your parents give you a reward (奖励)? It is common for parents to do that. But some people do not think it is a good idea.
One of them is Susie Walton, an education expert. She believes if kids get rewards, they will think that housework is not worth (值得) doing unless they get something in return. Kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will if their parents reward them for it. Walton also said, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all should play our part in keeping our home clean.”
Other people don’t think so. They believe that rewards encourage kids to do more chores. Rewarding also teaches them real world lessons. They can learn that we need to work to make money.
Now, there are also mobile phone apps like ChoreMonster. With the app, kids get points after doing chores. After getting some points, they can do something they like. For example, parents will allow them to play video games for half an hour if they get 80 points.
So each side seems to have their own reasons. Whether you give children rewards depends on your own ideas. Maybe you have better ways to solve this problem.

Passage 11
I have three children and I make them do housework. However, my mother-in-law (婆婆) doesn’t agree with me. She thinks I’m too harsh. In her opinion, parents shouldn’t be too strict with children. It is adults’ job to do housework.
I think our family is made up of five family numbers. No one in the family is more important than others, so each member should help with chores. I don’t ask my children to do the same chores, because their ages are different.
At the end of the day, after they finish playing with their toys, I ask them to put the toys away. If they don’t, they will have to say goodbye to their toys. I expect my children to set the table at night and help fold their own clothes. I don’t think I’m asking too much.
I know they are tired after a long day’s study at school, but that’s life—harsh but real. I don’t want to pay them for doing some chores. They live in the house, so they should help out with some things in the house. No one is going to pay them for cleaning up their rooms later in life and I’m not about to start doing it now.
Some parents protect their children too much from anything unpleasant (使人不愉快的) and make their children’s lives too comfortable and safe, but I’m not interested in that way. I hope my children are able to look after themselves and can be independent early.

Instead, I have to hang all the laundry on a clothesline in the backyard. It seems like a lot of work. And it means I can’t sleep in on Saturday.
Dad gets the washing started early. That way all the clothes can dry by the end of the day. “Up,” says Dad as he starts pulling the sheets off the bed. I drop off the bed onto the floor. “Go hang these!” Dad drops a wet sheet on me. It’s so cold! What a way to wake up!
After I hang up the sheet, I come inside and find Dad in the kitchen. He’s made pancakes. Dad sits down across from me. “Why so sad?” “Stupid laundry,” I said. “It takes forever!” “Well, you know we have to do laundry, right?” “Yup.” “And you realize that I collect the laundry, wash it, take it off the line, fold it, and put it away?” I am starting to feel guilty. “And you have to help out around here, right?” “I know, Dad. I also know that by hanging the laundry instead of using the dryer, we can save more energy. And that means we spend less and pollute less.” Dad is glad that I remember all that.

Passage 15
Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there’s too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are very good.
Preview — if it’s long and hard. Previewing is very useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and science reports.
Here is how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn’t give you all the details. It tells you not to spend time on things you don’t really want or need to read.
Skim — if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading, like popular magazines or the sports of your daily paper.
Here’s how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but perhaps we’ll get the same idea of what it’s all about.
1.What does the underlined word “preview” mean in Chinese?
A.精读 B.默读 C.朗读 D.略读
2.What should we do when we read a science report?
A.Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
B.Spend a lot of time reading the details.
C.Read the first and the last sentences of each paragraph.
D.Pick up only a few key words in each line.
3.What should we NOT do when we read the news about sports events in a daily paper according to the passage?
A.Get our eyes to move fast.
B.Read the last two paragraphs carefully.
C.Sweep our eyes across each line.
D.Pick up only a few key words in each line.
4.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Why we should read B.What to read

B.Doing chores is a good way to make money.
C.They can only be allowed to watch TV by doing chores.

4. Where can we find the topic in the passage?
