Thanksgiving Day was approaching. The first-grade teacher assigned her class an interesting task — to draw a picture of something they were grateful for. Most of the students came from economically challenged families, yet many would still celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional treats of the season. The teacher assumed these would be the main themes of her students’ artworks, and indeed they were.
However, Douglas created a unique drawing. Douglas was an unusual boy. He was the teacher’s true child of misery, weak, and unhappy. While other kids were playing during break, Douglas tended to stand close to her side. One could only imagine the pain Douglas felt behind those gloomy eyes. His picture was indeed different. When asked to draw something he was thankful for, he drew a hand. Nothing more, just an empty hand.
His abstract image sparked the curiosity of his classmates. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was a farmer’s hand since farmers raise turkeys. Another proposed it was a police officer’s, as the police safeguard and care for people. The discussion continued until the teacher nearly forgot about the young artist himself. After the children moved on to other tasks, she stopped at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and whispered, “It’ s yours, teacher.”
She recalled the times when she had held his hand and accompanied him around, just like with the other students. How frequently had she said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me teach you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was extremely grateful for his teacher’s hand. Wiping away a tear, she went on with her work.
In fact, people may not always express “thanks”, but they’ll remember the hand that reaches out.
4. What were the main themes of most students’ artworks on Thanksgiving Day?
A. Their families. B. Turkey and other traditional treats.
C. Their holiday trips. D. Teachers’ hands.
5. Which is closest in meaning to “gloomy” in paragraph 2?
A. Sad. B. Bright. C. Indifferent. D. Cheerful.
6. Why did Douglas draw a hand?
A. He wanted to thank a farmer.
B. He thought a police officer once helped him.
C. He was grateful for his teacher’s company.
D. He had no idea what else he could draw.
7. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The teacher’s influence on students.
B. The importance of Thanksgiving Day.
C. The different ways to celebrate Thanksgiving.
D. A story about a special Thanksgiving drawing.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. D

【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“In fact, people may not always express “thanks”, but they’ll remember the hand that reaches out. (事实上,人们可能并不总是说“谢谢”,但他们会记住伸出的手)”及全文内容可知,文章围绕 Douglas在感恩节画的一幅特别的画(画了一只手)展开,讲述了这幅画背后的故事,即他画老师的手是为了表达对老师陪伴的感激之情,D选项“一个关于感恩节特别的画的故事”可以概括本文的主旨。故选D。

Recent studies clearly show that the shoes we put on every day, especially sneakers, have a big impact on our body posture and joint health. This is especially obvious in winter. The cold weather makes our joints more delicate and thus more likely to be affected.
A revolutionary kind of shoes, the Glacia Barefoot shoes, has been created. It first became a great hit in Europe and then quickly became popular in America.
These shoes are the result of the hard work of Canadian podiatrists. They had two main aims. One was to find ways to stop and reduce joint pain in patients. The other was to deal with many common foot problems. For example, bunions are painful swellings near the base of the big toe, calluses are thickened areas of skin, and plantar fasciitis is an inflammation on the bottom of the foot. After three years of development, they were introduced in the United States and got an immediate and warm response.
The Glacia Barefoot shoes feature a minimalist design. They are much lighter than ordinary shoes and can be put on as easily as socks. They are also thin and flexible. The material used is an excellent insulator against the cold. When combined with the inner fur lining (内衬), it can protect feet even in extremely cold weather, as low as — 13°F. Athletes really like them because they are less heavy and more pleasant to wear than traditional sneakers. Elderly people also give them high praise. They say that these shoes have made them walk without pain again.
Thanks to the unique design, these shoes can fit any foot shape perfectly. Unlike regular shoes and snow boots, they don’t compress or twist feet. This is very helpful in preventing joint pain in the feet, knees, hips and back. Often, this kind of joint pain is caused by bad body posture due to wearing the wrong shoes. Moreover, it can effectively prevent a variety of foot conditions, such as hallux valgus, calluses, corns, plantar fasciitis, flat feet and high arches. In general, these shoes offer a new option for people to take care of their foot health and maintain good body posture.
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To tell us the function of sneakers.
B. To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To stress the seriousness of joint pain.
D. To inform us how cold weather influences our health.
9. Where did the Glacia Barefoot shoes first gain remarkable success?
A. In America. B. In Canada.
C. In Europe. D. In Asia.
10. What were the main aims of the Canadian podiatrists in creating the Glacia Barefoot shoes?
A. To make a lot of money and become famous.
B. To increase the speed and strength of athletes.
C. To relieve joint pain and handle common foot problems.
D. To change the present fashion tendency of ordinary shoes.
11. Why are the Glacia Barefoot shoes popular among sportsmen?
A. Because they have inner fur linings.
B. Because they can improve their performance.
C. Because they are lighter and more comfortable.
D. Because they can reduce their foot pain.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. C

(缓解关节疼痛和处理常见的足部问题)”符合题意。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Athletes really like them because they are less heavy and more pleasant to wear than traditional sneakers. (运动员们真的很喜欢它们,因为它们比传统的运动鞋更轻,穿着更舒适。)”可知,Glacia Barefoot鞋在运动员中很受欢迎是因为它们更轻、更舒适。故选C。

If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the earlier people learn a second language, the greater the effect is. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London (UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals (通两种语言的人)”, who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the earlier they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
12. What is grey matter according to the passage?
A. Information. B. Material of the brain.
C. Muscles. D. Brain power.
13. Based on the passage, which of the following is TRUE about the groups in the UCL study?
A. The “early bilinguals” had the least grey matter density.
B. The Britons only speaking English had no grey matter density change.
C. The earlier one learns a second language, the more grey matter changes.
D. Learning a second language has nothing to do with grey matter.
14. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Learning a second language can widen people’ s views.
B. It is not a challenge for people to learn a second language.
C. The research on the Italians doesn’t agree with other findings.
D. Age has no influence on learning a second language.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards learning a second language?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. B
【解析】

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“The study also found the earlier people learn a second language, the greater the effect is. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London (UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. 【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,(掌握两种语言给了你两扇看世界的窗户,使大脑更加灵活,)”和最后一段“Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,(学习一门语言意味着你获得了进入另一个世界的入口,)”可推知,学习第二语言可以拓宽人们的视野。故选A项。
【15题详解】

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a sunny day when Aiden came to me excitedly and asked if I would go on a camping trip to the mountains with him. In my mind I immediately thought of a nice log cabin, a warm fireplace with burning flames, cups of hot cocoa giving out steam, and comfortable beds. Little did I know that my pleasant imagination was going to be broken.
When Aiden and his elder brother, Lebron, showed up in a truck full of all kinds of camping things - big tents, tightly rolled sleeping bags, strong canteens, flashlights and compasses (指南针), I was really surprised. Of course, I had packed a backpack as I was told, but this was obviously not the easy camping I had expected. It looked more like a tough survival trip!
Lebron, who was always efficient, was very serious and hurried us to get into the truck so that we could leave the noisy city. As we got closer to the mountains, I couldn’t help noticing that they looked much bigger and scarier than I imagined. The trees were very tall and the whole environment made me a little afraid.
At the beginning of the trail, Lebron skillfully tied a sleeping bag to my pack and gave Aiden and me a serious talk about how to behave when hiking to camp. The first part of the path was like a road in the woods, which made the climbing seem easy at first. But soon, it became narrower and steeper, forcing me to focus all my attention on it and stop talking. As we climbed higher, we got above the trees and I could see the path winding up the mountain.
Just as we were making good progress, disaster approached. Out of nowhere, a thick fog rolled in, quickly enveloping us. Visibility dropped to almost zero, and I could hardly see my own feet.

【答案】参考范文一
Panic started to wash over me in waves. My heart beat wildly and I cried loudly, “What on earth should we do? Will we be lost forever?” Aiden grasped my arm tightly, his eyes wide with fear too. But Lebron stayed calm, his voice steady as he said, “Don’t panic. Follow me closely.” He took out a compass and led the way slowly, feeling the ground with his feet. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down, following his steps and moving on.
When we finally reached the camping site on the mountain top, my legs were hurting badly. But the moment I saw the magnificent view, all the pain disappeared. As darkness fell, we set up the tents and lit a fire. The crackling flames warmed our bodies as we crowded together, sharing not only stories and laughter but also a newfound bond. This trip taught me that the journey might be tough, but with friends by our side, we can overcome any difficulty and find beauty in the most unexpected places. True friendship is the compass that guides us through life’ s foggy paths.
参考范文二
Panic started to wash over me in waves. My heart beat violently as I thought of the countless horror stories set in foggy mountains. “What if we can’t find our way back and are trapped here forever?” I asked anxiously, my voice trembling. Lebron patted my shoulder firmly, “Stay calm. The compass is our reliable guide. We’ll be okay.” His confident words steadied my nerves. We inched forward with care, the thick fog cold and wet against our faces, but a ray of hope kept us going on.
When we finally reached the camping site on the mountain top, my legs were hurting badly. Yet, as I looked out at the vast stretch of mountains and valleys below, all the pain seemed to fade away quickly. Aiden grinned, “We made it! It was all worth it!” As darkness set in, we set up our tents, lit a fire and shared stories happily. To be honest, I was longing for a hot shower and a soft bed, but as I gazed at the crackling flames and the starry sky above, I knew this was an adventure I would never forget.

C He was grateful for his teacher’s company.
D. He had no idea what else he could draw.
7. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The teacher’s influence on students.
B. The importance of Thanksgiving Day.
C. The different ways to celebrate Thanksgiving.
D. A story about a special Thanksgiving drawing.

B To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To stress the seriousness of joint pain.
D. To inform us how cold weather influences our health.
9. Where did the Glacia Barefoot shoes first gain remarkable success?
A. In America. B. In Canada.
C. In Europe. D. In Asia.

A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful.

It was a sunny day when Aiden came to me excitedly and asked if I would go on a camping trip to the mountains with him. In my mind, I immediately thought of a nice log cabin, a warm fireplace with burning flames, cups of hot cocoa giving out steam, and comfortable beds.
