Dear Michael,
I’m Li Hua. I’m writing to ask you a favour because I’m having trouble in remembering
English words.
At present, I find it extremely difficult to remember new words. I often forget them soon
after memorizing them. Besides, so confusing are they that I really don’t know how to tell
them apart, which troubles me a lot. I wonder if you could give me some useful advice on how
to improve the ability to memorize words. For example, are there any effective methods or
techniques?
I really hope that with your help, I can overcome the difficulty and make great progress in
my English study. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

I immediately took a bite myself, and my heart dropped. The moment the flavor hit my
tongue, I knew something had gone horribly wrong. It was so salty! Not the rich, sweet
chocolate cake I had imagined! I turned bright red, and the entire room went dead silent. Then,
as if planned, everyone burst out laughing. Emily, trying to keep it together, finally managed to

say, “Well, this is definitely a new flavor I wasn’t expecting! A salty chocolate cake... that’s an
interesting choice.” I felt my face get even hotter. “I-uh-I think I used salt instead of sugar!”
I stammered, hardly able to look anyone in the eye. “I’m so sorry, everyone. I totally messed
up!”
But instead of making me feel worse, Emily just laughed harder. “Honestly, it’s not the
worst cake I’ve ever had,” she said, still giggling. “And hey, at least it’s something we’ll never
forget!” At that point, everyone joined in, and the room was filled with laughter. We joked the
cake as “legendary birthday cake” and it became the highlight of Emily’s birthday, which
relieved my embarrassment to a large degree. I was soon involved in the cheerful atmosphere
and we all had a pleasant time at Emily’s birthday party. It may have been a baking disaster,
but it was surely the most unforgettable moment of the celebration!

My dad is a teacher as well as an athlete. He trains hard in his spare time, especially if
he’s got a race coming up. I join him whenever I can. (18)I now go to practice swimming
with him about three times a week. We swim before school. I don’t like the early mornings,
but once I’m there, it feels great. I’ve always been a good swimmer so it’s really fun.
(19)When Dad comes home from work in the evening, we’ll go out for a run.We do it four
times a week. I’m faster than him, but he can run for a longer distance. At the weekend we go
biking. (20)Dad bought me my first racing bike last year, and it’s amazing. It took some
time to get used to it, but I love it. We’re now preparing for a marathon which will be held at
the end of the summer. It is the perfect time as we have the summer holidays to do lots of
training. I’m quite excited.
